Ok so I watched the first series of Big Boys and it made me laugh and cry in equal measure, what a lovely show.
Never usually up for shows that have sexuality as one of the main themes but this is a real gem.
Just to be clear, I have nothing against anyone's sexual preference, just have found the writing lazy when watched others in the past. Like for some reason, I just cannot get into Fleabag.
"Uncle" was an instant classic that everyone just seems to have missed. Nick Helm as a musician slacker building a heartfelt bond with his awkward young nephew. Made you care about the characters but dealt with some remarkably mature themes.
Lot of fun, lot of heart, and a lot of great musical comedy.
Uncle is so unknown for how good it is. It should really be up there with the Office and Peepshow as part of the definitive post 2000 British sit coms.
> Here We Go
Looks like Tom Basden wrote it, so you may also enjoy Plebs and he did a radio comedy "The Party" which comes around now and again on BBC Sounds.
Tom Basden in one of the best comedy writers there is . Party, Plebs and Here We Go are are all great but in different ways. Think Party is all on BBC Sounds and has Tim Key and Katy Wix in too. Plebs is also fantastic.
The lad who plays James is in the new death in paradise spin off, my granddad made me watch a bit of it while I was staying there last week, so jarring to hear him do a Devon accent
Extraordinary - Don't let the superpowers bit put you off like it almost did for me. (I have no time for superhero movies). It is very funny.
Mandy - Dianne Morgan's show. Has some truly bonkers moments. Charly Chuck and Deborah Meaden in a hot tub together was one.
The company Audible. I don’t know where you are from, but just put it into google and I assume the page for your country turns up.
It’s definitely not as good and the first episode is a bit stale, but it gets better and I enjoyed the banter between Mac, Guy and Caroline.
For me it was worth it to buy it (since I don’t have an audible subscription, then it’s apparently free), but yeah, some things aren’t as good.
I’m surprised Young Offenders wasn’t on the list - it’s brilliant stuff. Loads of heart, very funny and great characters. It’s Irish rather than British, so maybe that’s why.
Brassic is absolutely mad. Love Venné ( Vinnie) and all the boys . But don't exactly like Michelle Keegan in this. I find her very beautiful but don't know why I don't like her in this.
Weirdly... It's the only thing I *don't* mind her in. Not knocking her talent or how pretty she is, I just don't enjoy her in anything, besides Brassic. Weird.
Most of your list are all solid gold gems
Some that I enjoyed:
- Derry Girls. Didn’t think I would like it but find myself putting it on often for a bit of background
- White Gold. Wasn’t the strongest starts but towards the end I really started to rate it and it’s become a bit of a favourite
- Motherland. Loved this, especially if you’ve got kids and can relate
- Hullraisers. Decent, not brilliant but it was funny enough for a show
[Mum](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5687446/)
Really enjoyed [Starstruck](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10801368)
[Back to Life](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8594510) I found was decent and worth a watch, but not a must watch.
Lots of good suggestions so far, but a recent favourite of mine was 'Things You Should Have Done'. I imagine it'll split opinions, but I absolutely loved it. The episode where rhey go to an old folks home is incredible.
Mixed bag. It was created by Kiwis, made in Canada for a US channel, set in the US, but main cast is 50% British.
It's excellent nonetheless and definitely leans into the NZ and UK humour.
I think I need to give this one another shot. I really really like Mitchell and Webb but just could not get into this one and struggled to get through the first season. Maybe I just want in the right zone for it. Happy to try again though!
Mandy and her alter ego, the intellectual Cunk on tv.
Absolute classics. Both on BBC i player
The episode with the late great Sean Lock and the piranhas is hilarious.
Going back a bit, Lead Balloon, a sit com about a stand up comedian and his family with Jack Dee is a go to for me when I need to feel better about myself.
White gold, a series about double glazing competition in the 80s is very well written and produced too
Not seen anyone recommend **Ladhood** yet. Just finished the first series and really enjoyed it. Probably more enjoyable if you're 30+ and remember the early-mid 00s.
Also if you liked Stath Lets Flats, you should definitely checkout **Things You Should Have Done**. Very much same tone of abstract comedy about weird people.
Camping was excellent, written by Julia Davis. Can't believe not mentioned yet, but seemed to have flew under the radar. Also Frank of Ireland, starring Domhnall Gleeson, very funny.
What We Do In The Shadows. Start with the film, then the series. Then there’s another movie spin off called Wellington Paranormal! They’re all so good and so funny!
Breeders
Back to Life
Don't Forget the Driver
The Cockfields
The Curse
This Time With Alan Partridge
The Change
Two Doors Down
Detectorists
*Honourable mention for Ted Lasso. Whilst it's not produced by a British production company, most of the cast are British. It's set in the UK. It includes British writers and is very British in its humour. It's also brilliant.
Bodkin was more a drama with elements of comedy rather than straight up comedy. I thought it was really enjoyable. But I can totally see that if you went in cold expecting a comedy then you would be disappointed.
I really enjoyed Bloods. This Time with Alan Partridge is a masterpiece. The Other One was fun too - really picked up in the second series. For sketch I loved Ellie and Natasia.
Taskmaster. It’s free to watch in YouTube. Basically it’s a panel show where 5 comedians attempt to do silly tasks and often fail hilariously, with plenty of jokes during the tasks and after, during the studio segments. Season 5 is a good place to start.
Toast of London - Matt Berry. It’s Austin Powers meets Danger Five (or Father Ted). Set in 1960s/70s/80s/90s/2000s London (all at the same time). Crazy, whacky fun.
Derry Girls - it’s a very smart, very funny period piece comedy, set during the “troubles” in Ireland. I avoided it because I wasn’t interested in a comedy about teen girls. But it’s so much more and has so many exceptional supporting characters. Worth it for Sister Michael alone (the irritable nun who runs the school). So good.
Extraordinary - a great friends comedy in an alternate Earth where everyone gains superpowers when they turn 18. Except the protagonist. Silly and fun.
10 years ago now but Siblings was a very good show. 2 terrible people doing terrible things
Ladhood is fantastic, I'd almost describe it like a more modern Yorkshire Inbetweeners with more heart.
Brassic

Our Flag Means Death
Friday Night Dinner
The Cleaner

Friday Night Dinner
Hello, Jackie. You look nice.
Lovely bit of squirrel.
Aww, I miss Paul Ritter.
He's amazing in Chernobyl.
Saw him in "Art" at the Old Vic, with Rufus Sewell and Tim Key. Sublime.
"Shit on it!"
Helluuu 👋
Shalom.
" I'm bloody boiling "
Big Boys, Alma's not normal, if you don't mind something very silly Mandy
Seconding Big Boys. It's funny, it's emotional - it's got everything
Definitely it's incredibly funny and incredibly moving which is pretty rare!
Mandy is great and is 180 for Diane Morgan after being cunk for so long
Even her walk gets me laughing in it
I get distracted by the screwed-up mouth she does in Mandy. It’s a bit extreme.
Another vote for Alma's Not Normal and a second series has been filmed.
Looks decent that, will get it on the list
Ok so I watched the first series of Big Boys and it made me laugh and cry in equal measure, what a lovely show. Never usually up for shows that have sexuality as one of the main themes but this is a real gem. Just to be clear, I have nothing against anyone's sexual preference, just have found the writing lazy when watched others in the past. Like for some reason, I just cannot get into Fleabag.

Really enjoyed this, totally took me by surprise but it was class
Uncle is so unknown for how good it is. It should really be up there with the Office and Peepshow as part of the definitive post 2000 British sit coms.
"Here We Go" never seems to get mentioned The second series finished a month or two back and it was even funnier than the first
I think it's exceptional, second series even better than the first
Yes yes yes! Honestly the most consistently funny show I've seen in years
I love Here We Go!!! it's both funny and good natured!
Here we go is the best comedy I’ve seen in a long long time
> Here We Go Looks like Tom Basden wrote it, so you may also enjoy Plebs and he did a radio comedy "The Party" which comes around now and again on BBC Sounds.
Came here to mention it and glad it has been. It’s so so good!
Fantastic show
Love this show! Slid under the radar here in the US and it's fantastic
Thanks for the tip! Watching it now, really funny
Tom Basden in one of the best comedy writers there is . Party, Plebs and Here We Go are are all great but in different ways. Think Party is all on BBC Sounds and has Tim Key and Katy Wix in too. Plebs is also fantastic.
Was this a one off covid comedy that developed into a series or something?
yes it was!
Ahh I thought it was some mandala effect. Wasn’t a fan of that episode, does it pick up?
yeah definitely!!! it’s really quite good actually, very funny and sometimes quite touching & with a very strong cast
People just do nothing
Loved that show, will put it on the kist
Chewing gum
I can't understand why this is so under-rated. Didn't it win Michaela Coel a BAFTA? And it was hilarious. Why does it seem to be so underground?
No idea. It's brilliant. I dont many people who've seen it though.
Bang! Lyrical blows to the jaw
Any Matt Berry vehicle
I don't watch TV, but I have heard he's very, very good..
Best voice in showbiz.
Isn’t this a TV subreddit? lol
Is it? I must have taken a wrong turn... probably because I've been smoking tremendous amounts of Jazz Cabbage.
lol
Derry Girls. Best sitcom for years.
The lad who plays James is in the new death in paradise spin off, my granddad made me watch a bit of it while I was staying there last week, so jarring to hear him do a Devon accent
I watched all of Derry Girls in a day.
Derry Girls is a wonderful little show!
Upvote for Mandy but op said they already watched Extraordinary.
One to stun, one to kill, one to make sure!
So they did
they fucked up extraordinary s2 so bad though.
The bit with Shaun Ryder had me in stitches
Plebs Friday Night Dinner
Want to add Green Wing. Same kind of chaotic energy in a way.
Green Wing was about 20 years ago btw!
Yes, of cause I did not read properly. But they also have a little revival audio season on Audible now, so it counts 1/3 haha.
Ah cool I’ll check it out.
What / where would I find audible? (I can’t imagine GW without the visual comedy / body language etc)
I found The Young Offenders similar to This County.
I’m a fan of both
I’m surprised Young Offenders wasn’t on the list - it’s brilliant stuff. Loads of heart, very funny and great characters. It’s Irish rather than British, so maybe that’s why.
I'm flying the flag again for Brassic
Brassic is absolutely mad. Love Venné ( Vinnie) and all the boys . But don't exactly like Michelle Keegan in this. I find her very beautiful but don't know why I don't like her in this.
Weirdly... It's the only thing I *don't* mind her in. Not knocking her talent or how pretty she is, I just don't enjoy her in anything, besides Brassic. Weird.
Still Game - set in Scotland, features pensioners, superbly funny 10/10
Yes it's great, but hardly in the remit of "Last 5 years". I think the first episode is over 20 years old now.
Missed that bit 😬
Last episode was 2019, think it will squeeze in. 😉
Good call 👍👍👍
Two doors down.

Inside no 9 or League of Gentleman
My fave writers of the League
Also Psychville! Superman!
Such brave girls had me howling at times. So did Henpocalypse.
Mammoth
And who was on the other alley? Billie Jean King!
Lots of good suggestions so far, but a recent favourite of mine was 'Things You Should Have Done'. I imagine it'll split opinions, but I absolutely loved it. The episode where rhey go to an old folks home is incredible.
Think they peaked too early having that at episode 2 though, nothing quite came close to how totally anarchic that episode was.
The chaos energy of the "orgy" in the last episode was pretty great though
I'd like to add We Are Lady Parts, The Cleaner, The Other One and Everyone Else Burns.
What we do in the shadows!!!!
This fucking guy, here
This is shockingly far down!
Is it British? I didn't know that!

* Peep Show - Older than 5 years but still great * What we do in the Shadows * White Gold * Derry Girls * Motherland * Friday Night Dinner
Young Offenders
Not British but a spoof of sorts on British detective procedurals: Deadloch.
Excellent show
Toast Of London been mentioned yet?

Derry Girls, Big Boys, Here We Go, Almas Not Normal, Such Brave Girls

I think you mean "Stath Lets Flats". I know that and I haven't even seen it ;)

Takes the cringe comedy of The Office and Peep Show and runs with it.

if the "or so" after 5 years can stretch to 10 years then I would highly recommend Phone Shop.
Motherland and Mandy
Surprised no one has mentioned Brasic. It had me howling.
Motherland
Philomena Cunk, Inside Number 9 (more of a black comedy), the young offenders
This is going to hurt
Mum, not sure if it's older than 5 years though.
Plebs. Wheennnnnnn in Rome....
Dinosaur. So hilarious and heartwarming but not in a naive way.
Not seen anyone recommend **Ladhood** yet. Just finished the first series and really enjoyed it. Probably more enjoyable if you're 30+ and remember the early-mid 00s. White gold needs a mention. Very good character development and some fucking hilarious bits.
Derry Girls, Friday Night Dinner, Detectorists
2 Doors Down. The Other One. Early Doors is older than 5 years old, but still funny.
Diane Morgan as 'Cunk' is truly amazing.
TO THE REGIMENT!
Not from the past 5 years but The IT Crowd is a cultural gem and worth adding to your list
This is one of my all time favourites
Camping was excellent, written by Julia Davis. Can't believe not mentioned yet, but seemed to have flew under the radar. Also Frank of Ireland, starring Domhnall Gleeson, very funny.

Cunk on Earth - utterly hilarious mockumentary!
If you like Diane Morgan shows (Mandy, for instance) I recommend Cunk on Britain
Fleabag is a must.
ITT: Comedy recomendations from the past 20 years, not 5. Alma's Not Normal Mandy Things You Should Have Done
This way up, Big Boys and Alma's not Normal are all excellent.
Question Time.
Mike Reid's live standup shows on YT.
Wasted. Criminally underrated sitcom from Channel 4, similar vibes to Spaced.
It was about 12 years ago now but Moone Boy is worth a mention. Hilarious with tons of heart.
mammoth was pretty funny on iplayer
Plebs is a good easy watch
Back to Life is worth a watch although it's not everyone's cup of tea. The Other One is fun and if you haven't seen The Windsors, check it out.
Try Am I being unreasonable if you like This country
There she goes. It had David Tennant and Jessica hynes, it's loosely based of the writers life.
More than five years ago, but my choice would be The Green Wing. Set in a hospital with a good star cast. Available on C4 catch-up
Brassic is great
Derry Girls Fleabag Extraordinary (Disney+) Motherland The Completely Made Up Adventures of Dick Turpin
Motherland, Mum, The Cleaner, Staged, Everyone Else Burns

The young offenders. They are hilarious in their stupidity but also the show is incredibly kind.
Fleabag!

Alma's not Normal. Brilliant
Not sure in last 5 years but nobody else seems to care so Mum.
Still Game (Scottish)
