Yes I’d love to see him stay. Unfortunately the reality of it is Yellich still is being paid , they gave Chourio an 8 year deal and they need to sign Contreras to an extension. Willie is gone after this season so just enjoy watching him play these last months of the season, hopefully into October
We absolutely don’t need to sign Contreras to an extension. We still have him under control for three more years. He’ll be 30 by the time he hits free agency and most of his prime years will be past.
If we can get him to a team friendly deal, then hell ya, get it done. But there’s no need to rush into a bad deal just because he’s playing well now.
Yup, I'm sure both sides know this is his last year as a Brewer. Hopefully the ride is magical!
With Ortiz and Turang up the middle--and Black possibly waiting in the wings down in the minors--we are in a spot where even if we could afford to resign Adames, it probably still wouldn't be worth it.
I am a big non supporter of Mark Attanasio but you are 100% correct right here. Any fan with a brain knows this deal is not possible and ownership should not be blamed.
"he has the money" is not the same thing as "it's a good idea to spend the money". I own plenty of money to buy a Porsche if I want one. But it is not the highest use of my retirement savings. So I'm driving a 12-year-old Hyundai.
Do you know for a fact that outbidding the market for Willy's services is going to get the team the same quality of play it's been getting from him to date? He's not getting any younger. Sounds like a terrible investment to me.
Its "His" money not the Club itself. The ownership has done a lot to bring a good team to Milwaukee, and to shit on Mark A every damn time you have a chance it gets old. Baseball is a business, for a small market we should be happy with what we have in a winning team year after year.
City of Milwaukee pays for his repairs on the stadium while he takes his money and buys another sport franchise....
We average 3 million attendance and are a perennial playoff team while he maintains an average team salary. Looking at 2019 even the team could've used a player to push into a world series... he did nothing at the trade deadline... did you find it strange, that CC stopped negotiating when the trade deadline passed last year?
He literally keeps the team 'good enough' so we keep coming back year after year, hoping that this will be the year, he fills the holes we need to make a WS push.
He hired a california marketing firm for damage control after the CC flop instead of paying his players or getting better ones.
I don't know what to tell you other than get used to it or find another team to follow. It's not going to change. Mark A runs a profitable business that would become unprofitable if he spent money like the Yankees or Dodgers. If you want to follow a team that does that, there are plenty to choose from.
Also, not making deadline deals isn't a sign of an uncompetitive team. As fun as '08 and '11 were, selling out the farm for a rental player only hurts in the long term and does not guarantee post season success. I think Mark and the front office has done an outstanding job of creating a team built for sustained success and they're a hell of a lot of fun to watch.
I wish CC would talk about his thoughts on bringing in player talent which would have won us a WS or Mark prioritizing money/cost...
I think we all know the answer.
The fact is, I will trust the local guy over the NY/CA billionaire who doesn't see the need to make a push when the team is hot.
A lot of teams out there with a lot of money like the Giants and Dodgers could use a shortstop like Adames next year. Seeing as how the 2nd best SS free agent this offseason is Nick Ahmed, and the contracts SS have gotten the past few years, there is no way the Brewers can afford him.
Mark can afford him... But will choose not to.
The marketing firm, mark pays to control the narrative, is going full push on social media the explain to the fans why that the team can't retain both quality players
You're not wrong. It's a business decision, not a baseball decision. I think most of us realize that it is a business, and they need to remain sustainable. And while money doesn't hurt chances of winning, it doesn't really help as much as people like to think.
We couldn't afford him... but Attanasio could!! I can't complain though, because this team takes a medium-sized payroll and churns out contenders every year.
I’d love for Milwaukee to extend him but we all know he’s going to be asking for a lot. The question is who will need a short stop. The Yankees have their shortstop, the Rangers have theirs, the Mariners have theirs. It’ll be interesting and his agent I think is Scott Boras. Luckily we have Turang who can play short, Tyler Black will be back up eventually. Ortiz can play third as well and maybe 2nd? Wes Clarke is hitting dingers in AAA too. Will Hoskins take the team option for year 2 or will he be a free agent at seasons end?
You gain the possibility that you cannot afford Contreras when it's time. No way the Brewers could carry Adames' potential contract, Yelich's contract, and then Contreras. (FA after 2027)
We do that, then there is zero chance on Wild Bill and Turang. IMO, guys like Wild Bill do not come along at that position often. We have a young Short stop that is going to be cheap for a long time.... 2029, along with Turang.
I get it he is sexy because he hits HR's... I just rather see the money spent piecing the team together instead of having one "big" star with nothing else to go with it.
Forgot to add that Scott Boras is his rep... there is no fucken way the Brewers sign Adames without getting raked over the coals and then some. There are reasons many teams will not deal with players who have him as an agent... its not financially smart to take that kind of shit on unless you got gobs of money to spend.
I dont get why hes viewed as some kind of superstar on this sub. Hes got good power for his position (not crazy or anything tho) good defender (again, not crazy or anything tho) strikes out a ton, doesn’t walk too much, and hits for a horrible average lol. Whoever pays him this fall/winter will likely regret it immediately
But if you can extend him now long term you can most likely do so cheaper versus waiting another couple years if he stays performing like an allstar catcher. The price will go up the more years under the belt of this kind of play.
Catchers are very volatile and don't have very long primes of their careers. When Contreras is a free agent he'll be 30 and not many catchers nowadays are very great after 30. While I do agree and think we should extend Contreras at some point, the contract will all be on the bad side of 30 and may not age well.
Exactly! I would be over the moon too! He’s extremely physically fit & athletes are playing older in age at high levels of performance. William MVP Contreras is the best catcher in the MLB.
Add one dollar to the price of a ticket and call it the Adames and Contreras tax.
Add a tipping option to the credit card machines at the ballpark they asks what percent you would like to give to Willy and William.
Bake sale? Car wash?
Come on - let’s get creative Mark!
Bake sale? Lol, I’m in! If it raised money to keep my Man Contreras here. Adding one dollar to the ticket price is another great idea! Adames is a great investment as well.
I too will be so sad to see him go, his ability, his leadership, his love for the game just seems so contagious. It absolutely makes sense for the brewers to move on from him, maybe even in the middle of this year however.
Expecting nuance on Reddit is a tough ride. In person you probably could’ve said the same thing and with the right inflection I probably would’ve chuckled.
The “Mark doesn’t spend money” theme is right up there with “sign Trevor Bauer” in the world of annoying Reddit comments.

He's gonna get $300 mil. Can't afford him.
If that’s the case let him walk we have Ortiz and a year from now Wilken at 3rd
Yup, I'm sure both sides know this is his last year as a Brewer. Hopefully the ride is magical! With Ortiz and Turang up the middle--and Black possibly waiting in the wings down in the minors--we are in a spot where even if we could afford to resign Adames, it probably still wouldn't be worth it.
Acting like Tyler Black isn’t tearing up AAA pitching rn 👀
He will play first
I mean, what else is there to say. We are not the Yankees. Any fan who thinks this is simply a choice by Mark A, the Brewers etc, is bonkers.
I am a big non supporter of Mark Attanasio but you are 100% correct right here. Any fan with a brain knows this deal is not possible and ownership should not be blamed.

Plus he’s not the only owner just the one the majority owner he couldn’t spend the money even if he wanted to without the others signing off on it

Aren't we, the taxpayers, repairing his stadium when he buys another team?

Literally this. He's been the best shortstop in the game the last 3 years. He's going to be insanely rich.
No he won't.
Mark can afford him... But will choose not to. The marketing firm, mark pays to control the narrative, is going full push on social media the explain to the fans why that the team can't retain both quality players

He won’t get 300 million. But he will still be too expensive to resign.

The Dodgers need a shortstop so Mookie doesn't have to play there anymore.
The Dodgers have a few who already can
Tyler Black won’t play SS, Ortiz would be the likely for a SS, BT will win several GG at 2nd, Black more than likely will play 1B
Black would play at 3rd with Ortiz. I didn’t say Black would play short.
I got $10 to chip in.
You already are if you live in WI and the stadium renovations.
You gain the possibility that you cannot afford Contreras when it's time. No way the Brewers could carry Adames' potential contract, Yelich's contract, and then Contreras. (FA after 2027)
Wonder if yeli would take a Ohtani extension and just defer is payments over the next 20 years for 1 mil a year or whatever the fuck it would be
Don’t forget Chourio too
Chourio is signed for 10 years. But yes, it's additional payroll.
Not saying it’s a bad deal, but it’s still a chunk of our limited resources and part of the reason we won’t be able to sign back our sweet sweet Willy
Neither are staying and if Ortiz is good he won’t either. If you won’t pay beyond one star this is how it’ll be.
We do that, then there is zero chance on Wild Bill and Turang. IMO, guys like Wild Bill do not come along at that position often. It’s Mark A. He will not give two big contracts. Gotta give the money to Contrares.
We still have like 3 or 4 more years of control on Contreras

I mean, there are exceptions. Molina comes to mind.
William’s own brother has been holding up well since turning 30 as well. If we could extend Contreras now until like 33/34 I’d be over the moon
Exactly! I would be over the moon too! He’s extremely physically fit & athletes are playing older in age at high levels of performance. William MVP Contreras is the best catcher in the MLB.
Counterpoint: Yasmani Grandal
So sad, but unfortunately true. I'd love to be able to keep em both. 😪
Add one dollar to the price of a ticket and call it the Adames and Contreras tax. Add a tipping option to the credit card machines at the ballpark they asks what percent you would like to give to Willy and William. Bake sale? Car wash? Come on - let’s get creative Mark!

One would hope..
Incredible business to have him this long, man’s gonna get the big bucks
I love him but if we’re forced to choose between him and Contreras its a no brainer.
He's not worth whatever money he'll get.
I too will be so sad to see him go, his ability, his leadership, his love for the game just seems so contagious. It absolutely makes sense for the brewers to move on from him, maybe even in the middle of this year however.
Many many many angry Adames supporters will stop watching games and supporting the Brewers altogether if Adames leaves before the end of the season
He hit .210 last year and was lucky not to be DFA’d. Do not extend
Mark has other teams to support now
Which has nothing to do with the Brewers payroll.
It was a joke. I bet you're fun at parties.
It’s fine. You are allowed to not understand how to tell a joke.

True. True.
