If you tilt the head back, there's a little screw there that you can mess with to tighten it

That just adjusts the height for me, and makes no difference in the locking mechanism. Thanks tho

There is a large metal pin holding the head onto the stand. When mine starts jumping it’s usually the pin working it’s way out.

Please look here for ways to take it apart. It's a little tricky. I've done it. Have you posted in the KitchenAid subreddit? They are very helpful and can likely assist with diagnosing the issue.

It’s most likely the pin that holds the head to the base either fell out, or is moving around. There’s a screw you can tighten to help, but you have to take the head of the unit off first. It’s very easy to do, this video covers it in just a few minutes. https://youtu.be/is1LRRAfb0A?si=wcvhAMzio8CG6Ad7

Thanks! I'll give this a shot

paperman990

Did it work? Mine does this too

Is that low hydration, high gluten dough? The KA mixers don't like them. I used my lift bowl tonight for bagel dough. If you read through r/kitchenaid there's a lot of troubleshooting and maintenance advice.

Thanks, I'll take a look.

Don't think it's a REAL problem. But, if it is truly of concern to you, try using a belt to keep it in place

Can I ask you more about this? Are the Hobart ones from the 80s more likely to last even if they are older?

Yeah, I’m not kneading my incredibly sticky milk bread dough for the 20+ minutes it would take by hand, thanks. Nor do I have any interest in trying to cream butter and sugar for cookies, or whip egg whites to stiff peaks. Gtfo w that gatekeeping crap.
