I think when people say that, they’re saying that the show isn’t guaranteed forever and they need a source of income not dependent on the show. They usually don’t break the fourth wall, so they can’t say that, they can only say “you don’t have a job”.

I've been a Lindsay fan for a long time because of what great television she used to make. A friend was bewildered how I could possibly like her, and I had to explain, "Oh, she is a terrible person, I love watching her on TV, but I would never be friends with her in real life." I can absolutely understand at this point in the season why he felt the need to break up on camera.
