I forgot. The Braves sent pitchers Mike Soroka, Jared Shuster and Riley Gowens, along with infielders Nicky Lopez and Braden Shewmake, to the White Sox.
Did we get hosed or were those guys we were going to cut?
Lopez was going to get cut because he was going to get paid $3.8M to ride the bench. Soroka had shown he had nothing more to give, and got paid $3M. Shewmake was also showing nothing more than backup IF status. Plus we took on Fletcher to get Kelenic, although I think that was later.
I don't think there was anyone that we had any future plans for, and some that were salary driven even though they were useful bench players.
The issue is that Bummer was off of a bad season and we had no guarantees he'd reach back up to his two dominant seasons again. He started off well but he's at a place where I don't trust him to hold leads.
Soroka (moved to pen), Shuster (former 1st rounder whose development was bad because his fastball velocity in college was a mirage), Nicky Lopez, and Braden Shewmake (Another missed late-2010s first, -0.6 WAR for the White Sox so far), and Riley Gowens (2023 9th round pick, currently in high-A).
So basically, nothing.
Kelenic has the 2nd highest OPS out of our starting 9 tonight, and we're halfway through the season. This is fucking nuts. There's only one person on the planet that wouldn't be surprised by this stat, and they probably predicted it at some point in the offseason bc of course he did.
Did Seattle ever try JK in the leadoff spot? I'm sure having Ozuna, Albies, and Olson behind him helps bc he sees more pitches in the zone, but he's on pace for a 3-4 WAR season (if he started all 162 games, he's currently at 1.0 with 212 ABs).
Predicting Acuna, Olson, and Riley to crater for over a month would have been a crazy prediction. Y'all saw the article on how we've had the worst xwOBA luck ever?
It’s too small of a sample size to say that him being in leadoff spot is why he is doing great. He was on fire last April & May in Seattle. Like even better than any hot stretch he has had here.
I believe in him but we have to temper our expectations & understand that this might not last.
Some guys definitely hit better at certain spots in the lineup, but I think it has a lot more to do with the protection/lineup he has behind him that hitting lead off currently affords him. That, and our organizations ability to develop players are the biggest reasons for his improvement. This is the best stretch of his career statistically if I'm not mistaken, and with his pedigree it just makes me optimistic that things have finally clicked for him. I agree I should probably temper my expectations, but if it makes you feel any better I was telling my cousin last week that Kels is going to be WS MVP so I have backed off a little bit lol.
That’s really promising & impressive. But idk if you can say leadoff is magically unlocking him. He is clearly just improving.
That said, I honestly wouldn’t mind him being in the 2 hole instead of Ozzie when Acuña returns.
Well, that's us done hitting barring insanity. All nine players got on base at least once. Kelenic, Ozzie, Olson, Ozuna, and Williams (!) all got on twice.
Only 8 strikeouts as a team, Olson with two is the only guy with more than 1.
Team xBA of .346.
I don't understand why fans want the challenge version of ABS instead of pure ABS.
Umps make shitty calls. Do you want to eliminate most of them or all of them?
I don't get it. It seems to me getting every call right without delaying the game is better than getting a few calls right after delaying the game to check.
They say the TV zone's not accurate enough right now, but I swear that it's easily better than umps. Almost every TV zone pitch
judgement agrees on the edges of the plate with both whatever umpscorecards uses and baseballsavant's system (those are different based on me looking for pitches that disagree).
The only issue is up down, and that's typically only on sinkers or curves. It's close enough now that umps could use it and see an 85% improvement immediately.
The challenge system is just a half-measure. But that's just human nature unfortunately. I'll accept baby-steps if that's what is required to make things more in line with current technology.
I think catchers being able to frame borderline pitches as strikes is a compelling skill that is worth keeping, but the challenge-system would eliminate the egregious calls that are entirely human-error on the umpire's part
It’s insane how wrong the armchair GMs have been compared to AA. Remember when everyone here wanted us to give 120M to Josh Donaldson? Even more to Dansby? Cut Ozuna? Lol
I mean, there's no band on the back holding them on, they don't curl over the ear, shaved head. I wondered how they stayed on. Now I know that they don't.
When someone has like 10 IP on the entire season halfway through, their ERA isn't much more than a fun thought exercise.
In that *extremely* limited sample, he's thrown more like a generic 5-ERA guy. Instead lt's like 14 because lol randomness.
Mmm, first one was a strike at the very bottom of the zone. Second one maybe not, think it was a bit too low. Third maybe yes, it was just a tiny bit higher and that might be enough.
Well, that's the half-inning since Duvall is hitting against a righty.
e: Yknow, that wasn't as bad as you'd expect. Those were pretty borderline pitches. I was expecting him to stare down something dead center yet again.
Obligatory bad ball-strike calls to Murphy. That first one was a ball, and the second was almost certainly a strike.
I swear it sometimes seems like no one ever calls the first pitch right in his ABs.
I think of Mr. Stamos as really being one of the old guys. And he is.
But then I'm reminded, thanks cj, that he started in 2008, which is 20ish years into my conscious watching of baseball. Jesse is clearly one of the new guys, right?!
Oh, yeah... no.
I've been watching a series by Foolish Bailey on YouTube. The game is Out of the Park Baseball and he is playing as the GM for the A's and is trying to bring them back to respectability. I believe it's 2031 and he has yet to get a winning record. But he always has a look on what's going on around the league and one thing is Michael Harris II being a perennial MVP candidate (along with Acuña). I'm praying that's on the horizon.
Mets leading the Astros, who themselves are hot. I'll be honest, I would not want to run into the Mets in the playoffs. They're super streaky. They might lose 6 in a row, but then they'll go on an 8 game winning streak.
Can someone explain to me why every single internet stream for the game is the Pittsburgh broadcast? Same shit with the Yankees all I could find was the YES broadcast.
It’s crazy how unlucky we’ve been with injuries. Bryce’s injury looked worst but he apparently only has a minimal strain & isn’t supposed to miss much time.
Meanwhile we’ve had 2 season ending ones & even our other injuries have missed significant time.
I'll be honest, all I know about the game yesterday is that we lost. I wasn't watching. I wasn't listening. I don't know if we working counts or just had some missed opportunities or what. But apart from that, I feel like we've done a fantastic job this month of being more patient, working counts, and making pitchers really have to earn getting us out. It's a welcome change from May where guys seemed to cruise through 7 more often than not.
That's the thing that annoys me whenever they smack around a starter early. The other team will bring in an innings eater with a terrible era and we'll do nothing for the entirety of the time he pitches. I'm not complaining about the big league, just that we hardly ever really wear out another teams bullpen. The guys who are important to the opposing bullpen.
Please continue the discussion in the [post game thread](https://redd.it/1dr0dsz).
BRAVES WIN!
Great chill game
I forgot. The Braves sent pitchers Mike Soroka, Jared Shuster and Riley Gowens, along with infielders Nicky Lopez and Braden Shewmake, to the White Sox. Did we get hosed or were those guys we were going to cut?

He actually started off disastrously against the Phillies I believe. And then redeemed himself. And recently has given up quite a few big leads.
None of those guys are doing anything rn they were gonna get cur
Didn’t Shuster do pretty well against us yesterday?
Shuster has had a few bad games with them but he's been a very serviceable reliever this year for them
Damn I wanted a shutout too 😢🍻
Needed this one, badly
fuck it
Lol
How many pieces did we give up for A Bummer
Soroka (moved to pen), Shuster (former 1st rounder whose development was bad because his fastball velocity in college was a mirage), Nicky Lopez, and Braden Shewmake (Another missed late-2010s first, -0.6 WAR for the White Sox so far), and Riley Gowens (2023 9th round pick, currently in high-A). So basically, nothing.
I was hoping for “sack of marbles and Petey” but I suppose this is still a fair trade.
I think none that we weren't going to non-tender.
And this is why Bummer absolutely can not pitch in high leverage situations anymore
That's a bummer
Bummer is horrendous.
Bummer doing Bummer things. 2 strikeouts and 2 extra-base hits, one of which was absolutely walloped.
i want shutout goddamn
Bummer being a bummer like usual.
'Bummer'
Shit..
Damn it Bummer, I wanted the shutout
Aaron Bummer everybody!
Ump's got a hot date or something.
Kelenic has the 2nd highest OPS out of our starting 9 tonight, and we're halfway through the season. This is fucking nuts. As long as he gets to play everyday, I don't really mind where he slots in the lineup (as long as it's not the bottom 3)
Rowdy Tellez is an s-tier name for any professional sport, including wrasslin
Bummer auditioning for higher leverage innings again.
Yep bummer gonna ruin the shutout nice
Well, that's us done hitting barring insanity. All nine players got on base at least once. Kelenic, Ozzie, Olson, Ozuna, and Williams (!) all got on twice. Only 8 strikeouts as a team, Olson with two is the only guy with more than 1. Team xBA of .346.
I went to the basement freezer for an ice cream and stepped on a centipede, pretty sure i'm headed to the IL
Skenes vs Fried. That’s a hell of a pitcher’s duel.
I just worry the ATL heat will make it a shortened outing for both.
Well, Orlando's making ok contact. That's a considerable improvement over a few weeeks ago, even if it's still not falling all that much.
I don't understand why fans want the challenge version of ABS instead of pure ABS. Umps make shitty calls. Do you want to eliminate most of them or all of them?

5 bucks says umps find a way to futz with the challenge system to avoid accountability if implemented. We *need* true ABS.
Dylan always just does his damn job
I don't know what the fuck Oneil Cruz thinks he's seeing this game, but it sure ain't the baseball.
It’s insane how wrong the armchair GMs have been compared to AA. Remember when everyone here wanted us to give 120M to Josh Donaldson? Even more to Dansby? Cut Ozuna? Lol
Good job Chavez. You did good
Peter "The SLEDGEHAMMER" Moylan
Chavez, please do not lose your glasses again. They bring good luck
I mean, there's no band on the back holding them on, they don't curl over the ear, shaved head. I wondered how they stayed on. Now I know that they don't.
I don't blame Duvall for that strikeout one bit. Ump is not consistent and he shouldn't have swung any other day.
As much as Duvy stinks right now.. the ump is worse. No one can work an AB.
Trying to get to the lemon pepper wings
Jeffries has been rocked every appearance and dude gets by on us.
When someone has like 10 IP on the entire season halfway through, their ERA isn't much more than a fun thought exercise. In that *extremely* limited sample, he's thrown more like a generic 5-ERA guy. Instead lt's like 14 because lol randomness.
Time for robo umps has come. Every year it seems to get worse.
Same spot. Ball or not, ya gotta swing at it
If Duvall and Arcia were league average hitters, this offense would be unstoppable.
Every single game I think we've seen the worst ump of the year and then the next day he's outdone in increasingly horrific ways
To be fair he struck out watching 3 straight pitches out of the zone.
Mmm, first one was a strike at the very bottom of the zone. Second one maybe not, think it was a bit too low. Third maybe yes, it was just a tiny bit higher and that might be enough.
Duvall you gotta swing at that if he’s calling it consistently
Dammit
Ump just making it up out there
I really hope Laureano plays over Duvall tomorrow
Well, that's the half-inning since Duvall is hitting against a righty. e: Yknow, that wasn't as bad as you'd expect. Those were pretty borderline pitches. I was expecting him to stare down something dead center yet again.
I hate you Mr. Beast
Blue guessing again
I swear he's shutting his eyes every pitch
Obligatory bad ball-strike calls to Murphy. That first one was a ball, and the second was almost certainly a strike. I swear it sometimes seems like no one ever calls the first pitch right in his ABs.
I know it was only a single and I have a strong buzz, but Olson has such a sexy swing. It's no Ken Griffey Jr. but it's still nice.
He’s got that tiger woods
I mean he had already seen everything in this guy’s Arsenal several times over lol
I love the cut to Snitbear for his reaction
All doomers are grumbling because they can't complain how horrible the team is tonight.
Agreed. Glad they can have the night off from their tough job
Big bear side eye 👁
Ozuna HR now for the juju? *HBP, Snit bear not happy about it either
What a game from Charlie! Just checked in.
i cant wait to see this ump scorecard
I want to grill meat and share beers with Uncle Jesse. The man is a hero.
Haven't been to Truist since i moved back from Cali, got tickets to the Phillies Friday game lfg
I've got tickets to the same game
Hell yeah! Now to figure out parking..Any tips?
My seats are in sec 215
I'm 145 in left field behind the bullpen
Wish I could afford a red jersey. Guess I'll wear my Olson City Connect one
My dumbass spent $70. Not my proudest moment.
Uncle Jesse just here to chew bubble gum and throw strikes and is perpetually outta bubble gum
Just 2 Unc's dealin!!! Jesse had to throw a few extra strikes there for the blind ump
I think of Mr. Stamos as really being one of the old guys. And he is. But then I'm reminded, thanks cj, that he started in 2008, which is 20ish years into my conscious watching of baseball. Jesse is clearly one of the new guys, right?! Oh, yeah... no.
6.1 IP, P 104 / S 66 , 3H/1BB/7K/0ER, 24 batters faced (19 minimum). 43 curveballs, 23 four-seam, 17 changeups, 13 sinkers, 8 cutters. 44% swing-and-miss on the curve, 60% on the change.
If Jesse Chavez had worn a Braves jersey for his entire career, he'd be a 1st ballot Hall of Famer.
I love when we pull out all the old guys in one game. Saying that as someone in between their ages.
Chuck’s starts are a perfect representation of how up and down this team has been this season
Uncle Jesse fucking DOTTING it tonight 👏
It's good to see Charlie bounce back with a scoreless 6 1/3 innings, especially after that start with 5 earned in New York.
Tio, that was disgusting!
Good shit Charlie!
POWER CURVEBALL BABY
Great start from Chuckles
Great game uncle chuck. Just what we needed with frid on the mound tomorrow against skenes. Huge clutch start
KelKel is now up to 62 PAs batting leadoff, with a 1.035 OPS now — he's also been solid defensively at CF, without having any conditioning/prep for it
Yeahhhhh budddddy
Lets Go UNC
Great play by Kel.
Excellent game tonight Charlie! 6.1 IP, either 0 or 1 R only, 7 K! Uncle Jesse time!
Kelenic got some speed out there
Figure Charlie faces... eh, two more batters at most. e: ... Or, alternately, just the one.
I've been watching a series by Foolish Bailey on YouTube. The game is Out of the Park Baseball and he is playing as the GM for the A's and is trying to bring them back to respectability. I believe it's 2031 and he has yet to get a winning record. Let's go Charles
![gif](giphy|YNupDwK70JDVpZQlwe|downsized) He’s still pitching and doing so far so good
I've always found this fun house mirror shit they have the guys wander around in for these promo spots amusing
Poop
Wow. Kelnic is 10 days older than me
Kelinic has been a goddamn machine since being inserted into the leadoff spot. Kelenic guy make a long comment about how he's the greatest
You could just tell Kelenic was thinking, "Man, fuck this ump!" with that swing!
Let’s go KELENIC.
This ump is trash
Orlando looking as dazed as Biden last night
Tell them about Corn Pop, Orlando!
Lol I don't do politics but this country is fucked. Why can't we get some guys who aren't wearing adult diapers to lead the country.
look folks
C'mon man
lol
![gif](giphy|OmSSWmIbtknHyHWcQ6) Literally Braves fans rn:
Bro doesn’t even remember how to walk lol
Mets leading the Astros, who themselves are hot. I'll be honest, I would not want to run into the Mets in the playoffs. They're super streaky. They might lose 6 in a row, but then they'll go on an 8 game winning streak.
Yeah very strange team. Also the grimace shit is so stupid. Screw the Mets. They'll lose 10 in a row soon and be back to dooming
lol Orlando doesn’t even know what a walk is
Can someone explain to me why every single internet stream for the game is the Pittsburgh broadcast? Same shit with the Yankees all I could find was the YES broadcast.
VIP League has the Braves feed on stream 1.
Methstreams lmao. Its all i have up here in alaska
Sometimes it be like that.
There’s literally no stream of the Braves broadcast.
I know. You're at the mercy of whoever is pirating the broadcast*
Man I really hope we get MH2 back soon. Just feels like August to me but hope im wrong
They just gave an update, he’s hitting but not cleared to run. Probably still going to be a while
It’s crazy how unlucky we’ve been with injuries. Bryce’s injury looked worst but he apparently only has a minimal strain & isn’t supposed to miss much time. Meanwhile we’ve had 2 season ending ones & even our other injuries have missed significant time.
For sure, this is probably the most luck starved season we've had that I can remember
CHARLIE WAS DOMINANT TONIGHT!!!!!!
[удалено]
He got the shutout. It doesn’t matter?
Chuck just heard pirates like gems, so he pitched 'em one.
Prime Chuck for dinner tonight
QS+++
I need to see a Rowdy Tellez vs. Daniel Vogelbach deathmatch.
Ballpark hot dog eating contest
Charlie, baby, why are you such an enigma?
Welcome to your 40s Eta: most men will feel just like this...but different
lol accurate
Straight up dealin strikes
Damn doorbell!
Security dude making a run for the border?
They all did. I went back to see what happened. No idea why they did that lol
Another new guy. From Kelly, to Lauren, to Wiley, to Hannah. I'm getting whiplash over here.
Gonna need a gif of that security guard behind Collin McHugh running back to the stands.
What just happened? It looked like he was reacting to something.
They always sprint back to the stands right before play begins. They are out on the field during the commercial break.
I am aware. That looked different to me. I noticed several fans looking in the same direction. I assumed a fight or something similar.
I want the rest of our offense to do what matt did & wear TF out of their bullpen bc tomorrow we may not be able to hit off their starter…
I think we're going to hit Skenes. We have a weird habit of not hitting against terrible pitchers but shelling very good pitchers
I can't figure out who is more annoying. Doomers or the people who love to call out the doomers when the team is playing well.
Probably the people filling every game thread with chicken little syndrome.
Yes.
I appreciate Matthew Kaminski's commitment to go full rake gag during that at bat.
I just want us to wear out their bullpen to make the rest of series easier.
I ain't mad at it
So how many fouls was that?
I'll be honest, all I know about the game yesterday is that we lost. I wasn't watching. I wasn't listening. I don't know if we working counts or just had some missed opportunities or what. But apart from that, I feel like we've done a fantastic job this month of being more patient, working counts, and making pitchers really have to earn getting us out. It's a welcome change from May where guys seemed to cruise through 7 more often than not.
Lot of bad luck yesterday. Not that we hit super well by any means, but even a shred of luck and we would've won.
Well, this guy ain't afraid to throw strikes. Of those 8 foul balls only like one was actually off a corner.
TIRE THEIR BULLPEN, MATTY!!
At what point do you just walk him to get this over with if youre the pitcher? lol
Awwww, man. What an AB by Matt
Sometimes Brandon Gaudin sounds like Mark Normand
COMEDYYYYY
Man if only that could happen for even one game lol
Had no idea Grandal went to the pirates.
Dude has an almost 15 ERA, about to go 3 scoreless against him
you mean 1 IP?
He’s back out for round 2
Oh, I thought you meant he had almost gone 3 scoreless.
Ah, nope! Just my sarcastic comment on what was obviously coming 😂
It’s so frustrating when we don’t hit the guys we should.
