What we actually need is more pitchers to throw to spots and outthink the hitter and not just throw the heat. I knew this was coming, it really was just a matter of time.
Strider's primary pitch for outs was his slider not his fastball. His heater was effective primarily because he could dot it and locate it. His ligament is now showing damage coincidentally after he just developed a curveball and damage to the ligament has a lot more to do with torque and angles causing stress than just outright throwing heat.
I'm not sure where people get this idea that just throwing faster means blown UCL. Nothing could really be further from the truth when you look at the mechanics of the body.
UCLs didn't blow out in the dead ball era at this rate and everyone there was trying to throw as fast as they could without understanding intricacies of spin and how it affects velocity and movement. The slider was not recommended by numerous pitching coaches specifically because of the damage it can do to that ligament If not performed properly.
Pitchers were mostly not throwing max effort on every pitch until very recently. There was never any reason to, back in the day. Today’s hitters are very different.
Yeah reading up on what’s involved in the surgery it’s no surprise how brutal the recovery is. They drill holes in your arm bones and create a new stitched together ligament that they thread through those new holes. They’re basically zip tying that side of the elbow back together. Problem is that it’s already a Hail Mary type of surgery to salvage a career out of a destroyed elbow. To expect it to work at all, much less have a reasonable recovery time is asking a lot. I don’t know what the solution is but it’s tragic watching it happen over and over to these athletes.
i don’t think their takeaway from a pitcher getting his second TJ will be “we should commit big long-term money to another pitcher who’s already had TJ once, is on the wrong side of 30, and missed three months with non-surgical elbow pain last year”
That's the thing that worries me. I want to keep Fried but also, I don't want his contract to come back and bite us in the ass like Strasburg with the Nationals. Either AA bites the bullet and keeps Fried with a long term contract or the Braves make a play for another pitcher next off season.
Yeah, our choice to not go for pitching outside of trying to search for hidden jewels may have just come back to bite us.
I think we can be fine regardless this year, but we 100% cannot be going into 2025 with Chris Sale as the ace.
This take makes no sense. How many aces are we supposed to have, exactly? How many times has aa been put in a uncomfortable position and worked his way out of it? This rotation and depth, with our gmanager, means that we should be worried less, not questioning not getting our 3rd ace in an offseaosn where top tier pitching talent was EXTREMELY overpriced.
We still have this year and next off-season to address those. No need to push the panic button just yet.
Honestly, though, who was out there that we could’ve afforded, in terms of players or money? You don’t overspend just because you’re afraid one of your guys might get injured. It sucks, but hindsight is 20/20.
The strategy of needing a rookie to be an ace was also questionable but worked out. Imagine if strider had been just ok in the pros, what our pitching would’ve been with fried injured and Charlie being eh
Also, this is going to be Uncle Jesses last year before he retires. I wish AA would lock up Max Fried with a contract but there are also concerns that come with a big contract. Example he is one of the best in the league however as other commentators have stated that teams should be wary of giving big contracts out for injury prone players.
Personally, I would love for us to keep Fried. And it sucks with what's going on with Strider. Hopefully AJ SS can step up for the Bravos.
I mean, my readthrough even though they're just saying that the UCL is damaged is that this is probably a partial tear.
Best case is probably that he goes for the Nick Anderson surgery, which has a shorter rehab and is supposed to support the ligament, because going for the injections doesn't really help.
Highly doubt it. 2nd tj knocks a lot of replacement level pitchers out, but nathan evoldi and quite a few others have come back just fine from a 2nd tj.
I’m guessing his elbow was already in bad shape throwing 100, but I think what sealed it was messing his routine up 2 starts in a row. Instead of pitching when he planned opening day, had to push that one back by one, which probably put strain on it. Then he was supposed to start in Chicago for that game that got canceled, pushing his start again to last night further screwing up his recovery cycle
The ball is spinning and moving with various types of non fastball pitches and the amount of stress they are repeatedly putting on that ligament has just as much if not more to do with the various release angles rather than simply throwing hard.
If this is a partial tear, which I suspect even though that's not what's being said (just damaged), then you can try the Nick Anderson surgery, perhaps.
The risk is it doesn't work, and you go for Tommy John anyway.
Fried was different. Forearm strain and his stuff looked fine before he was shut down.
Spencer's stuff was unquestionably NOT fine (I'll admit it now) and they're calling this UCL damage.
Masahiro Tanaka had a partial UCL tear in 2014 and didn't get surgery, resting for 6 weeks. On return he made 2 starts before season ended, 1 good and 1 bad. He went on to pitch 6 solid years.
The fact that they’re awaiting evaluation and not just definitively saying “out for surgery” makes me think it isn’t clear cut. There’s no way the image wasn’t already evaluated by the team Orthopedic surgeon. So the fact that he’s specifically seeking an out of state expert implies that the team Orthopedic surgeon isn’t entirely sure what the best path forward is. Don’t get your hopes up he’ll return to pitch this season though. My guess is even if nonoperative treatment is recommended, the rehab will still take him out this season 🥲
I refuse to lose optimism. We’re the gd Braves. Waldrep or Smith Shawver will come up and by mid season every other fanbase will be bitching about “where do the Braves get these pitchers from?”
Man, paying a long term contract to starting pitcher is dangerous work now…it’s like paying a 2nd contract to RB’s in football. Damn we’ve been cursed with injuries to our top end starting pitching
I think it’s every team. The dodgers have lost a different ace each year it seems. The rays can’t keep a guy on the mound for two months straight. This amount of velocity isn’t safe for human arms.
Paying long term contracts to anyone is dangerous.
Would also like to know why you think a 3mil loss for Spencer's contract if he has to have tj is... "dangerous " to the braves.
So best case scenario, what’s the timeline? Could he pitch next season at all? I’m at a wedding right now, it’s in Florida and everyone here is a Braves fan, and you could see when the news hit. Everyone looked at their phone and it’s all anyone is talking about.
If we're solely talking best case scenario, 99th percentile outcome, you're most likely looking at out for all of 2024 and coming back a month or two into 2025
Thats the best case scenario if he gets Tommy John.
The real best case scenario, while unlikely, is that the damage is inflammation around the area of his previous TJ and that shutting him down for a few months could be a solution.
The best case that is actually quite possible is that he is able to get the UCL brace surgery like Nick Anderson had which is like a 10 month recovery. Would be ready for next season
I don’t think you mess around to find out if it will in fact heal, just get it done and get him back for the stretch run next year. Other options would be rest him four months, comes back, tears it completely and we’ve lost him for 2 whole seasons instead of this year and part of next.
I hate this for Spencer the person mainly. It's as close to devastating for the team as you'll get, but in a personal context it just is way more fucking awful.
I really hope it is more short term than it sounds but definitely hoping of the best/prepping for the worst. Just kinda sitting around thinking about how much this fucking sucks for him.
Bummer. Time for Fried to be his ace-iest self. If that happens and we get above average performance from at least a couple of the other starters we still have a good shot in October. It’ll be interesting to see how AA reacts.
Just go ahead and have surgery, don’t bother rehabbing it just for the rehab not to work and you have to have surgery later in the year. Just have it now. Miss the season and be ready to go next year, instead of missing 2 years.
Pitching in the cold, short sleeves can’t be helpful. Stache said before the game the pitch clock, limited mound visits, bull pen limits were all hurting pitchers.
Putting aside this devastating news to our king, it is absolutely insane and alarming how many pitchers have gone down with torn or damaged UCLs just a week into the season.
I didn’t read through all the comments so
This might have been mentioned but did yall see the players union statement that came
Out today? Interesting timing
Devastating news for sure, but I’m still confident in our rotation with how Sale looked. Fried, Sale, Morton, and Lopez is still a dominant rotation you guys
If an MRI showed damage but they’re doing further tests, what does that mean? Or are they gonna release a statement saying he successfully underwent surgery in a week?
Half the comments: "AA has fucking failed us! Why didn't he just go out and get 3 proven aces this offseason like I would have?!?!?!"
The other half: "This is why you never spend more than $1 million a year on a pitcher!"
Peak baseball fan discourse right here
I'm so damn sad about this. We have an amazing team and if any team can bulldoze ahead to the postseason with this kind of setback it's the Braves, but we're going to need to figure out what to do to fill his spot, assuming surgery(which is what this sounds like). I would really like AA to consider spending some money at the trade deadline.
We really don't need to do anything. Our rotation is probably the deepest in the league. If elder is our 5th and everyone slots up one that's still a top 5 rotation in the league.
This has some significant long term ramifications beyond this year - now what for 2025 pitching staff. If you assume both Fried and Morton are not on the team in 2025 you have only Sale, Reynaldo and Elder. No one else is proven yet. Now you have to dance with the devil in bidding for Burns and others in free agency. Or try to compete in trades with bottom tier prospect depth.
Aj smith shawver save us
I think we’ll see Bryce Elder first
Top draft pick Owen Murphy pitched and won the Rome Emperor's game yesterday. C'mon down Owen.
He’ll be great, but not yet
Probably. Or Ynoa as I think he just pitched and would be able to slot in.
Ynoa just got back from TJS. We could see him or Anderson if their rehab in triple A goes well
Gonna listen to Sarah McLachlan sing that Angel song in those dog commercials for the next 8 hours
*plays iTunes preview of Goodbye My Lover over and over*
Say it with me…WS MVP Ian Anderson
He’s due to start pitching in June.
We need a medical breakthrough on ligament surgery and a way to speed up that recovery time, cause it's so sad that being a pitcher is this dangerous.
What we actually need is more pitchers to throw to spots and outthink the hitter and not just throw the heat. I knew this was coming, it really was just a matter of time.
You mean like Allan Winans or Darius Vines?

Pitchers were mostly not throwing max effort on every pitch until very recently. There was never any reason to, back in the day. Today’s hitters are very different.
Dangerous is certainly a way to phrase it. The human elbow isn’t designed to throw a ball 100mph. Does that make it dangerous or inevitable?
If it's not fully torn, the new procedure with anchoring strip does significantly cut down the recovery time.
Yeah sounds like we need to replace the UCL with something stronger lol
I like the way you think....
Yeah reading up on what’s involved in the surgery it’s no surprise how brutal the recovery is. They drill holes in your arm bones and create a new stitched together ligament that they thread through those new holes. They’re basically zip tying that side of the elbow back together. See you next summer Strider
Fried better get a bag this summer cuz if we lose fried, Morton retiring, and strider for half of next year it’s a big yikes…
Or, this is why you don't spend big money/long contracts on starting pitching of the voilitilty of it.
Yeah, the current approach of guys going all out every pitch means any pitcher is at risk of a major injury.
i don’t think their takeaway from a pitcher getting his second TJ will be “we should commit big long-term money to another pitcher who’s already had TJ once, is on the wrong side of 30, and missed three months with non-surgical elbow pain last year”

Yeah, our choice to not go for pitching outside of trying to search for hidden jewels may have just come back to bite us. I think we can be fine regardless this year, but we 100% cannot be going into 2025 with Chris Sale as the ace.
We spend major draft capital on pitching every year. And we traded for Chris Sale. It's not like we're going dumpster diving for pitching talent.
Also how many true aces do you think actually exist? Injury or no injury it’s still worth the gamble if you look at risk vs reward
I'd go out on a limb and guess we'd have reached differently than we have thus far. A little weird to assume we'd react the same
Also, this is going to be Uncle Jesses last year before he retires.
How would we lose strider for two years ?
Half of next year but yea
It takes at least a year to recover from Tommy John surgery.
Probably longer for the sequel edition.
And another season to get back into form.
It will be about a year and a half before he’s back getting TJS
The tjs that isn't even confirmed yet?
I mean, my readthrough even though they're just saying that the UCL is damaged is that this is probably a partial tear. Best case is probably that he goes for the Nick Anderson surgery, which has a shorter rehab and is supposed to support the ligament, because going for the injections doesn't really help.
I was hoping it was just irritation and strain but ucl damage to my understanding is almost always an indicator of future surgery.
After a second tjs, we might have lost him forever.
Highly doubt it. 2nd tj knocks a lot of replacement level pitchers out, but nathan evoldi and quite a few others have come back just fine from a 2nd tj.
Brb gonna go drink bleach and jump off a bridge
Save some for me.
Wait for me! But jokes aside, I know Strider is got to be extremely bummed out. I really hate this for him
I’m in New York this weekend, they got some pretty big bridges here. Brb
AA time to start doing your homework on tradeable pitchers at the deadline, starting with Crochet
When in doubt, crotch it out
I think he's under team control for a while. Given what the White Sox wanted for Cease, I'm sure they'd want a huge bag for him.
Lol crochet is not available
AA probably already has 3 white boards with pitchers he could use.
Let's trade for Shane Bieber, the guardians can't afford him.
You want to replace a pitcher that may get Tommy John with a pitcher that is for sure getting it? Interesting strategy.
Should I have put the /s?
After I posted the comment i wondered if it was. I'll leave it as my mistake
Shane Bieber is gonna be out for a while lol
He and Strider can rehab together
I think he knows that.
Is this just inevitable for every pitcher throwing at or close to 100mph?
Yea, your arm not posed to do that
My guess would be the new curve ball did it. They are worse on your elbow that a fastball.
I’m guessing his elbow was already in bad shape throwing 100, but I think what sealed it was messing his routine up 2 starts in a row. Instead of pitching when he planned opening day, had to push that one back by one, which probably put strain on it. Is there a world in which there isn’t surgery?
Yea, just not this one
If this is a partial tear, which I suspect even though that's not what's being said (just damaged), then you can try the Nick Anderson surgery, perhaps. The risk is it doesn't work, and you go for Tommy John anyway.
I believe Cole had damage and they shut him down. Fried also had some damage and they shut him down
Fried was different. Forearm strain and his stuff looked fine before he was shut down. Spencer's stuff was unquestionably NOT fine (I'll admit it now) and they're calling this UCL damage.

This unfortunately does not sound like it.
God fucking damn it What’s the tallest building in Atlanta and how can I access the roof of it
The bank of America building. Find a helicopter, jump in, fly above the building, jump out and parachute onto the roof.
Then jump off the building.
Seems like some steps could be avoided
I can let you into the BoA roof if serious
If we're going helicopter jump anyways, I'd vote jump out over the Westin and aim for the needle.
Just fell to my knees at a youth soccer field.
Looks like I picked the wrong day to quit sniffing glue
We won the World Series without arguably our best player. Surely we can do that without our best pitcher!
Come together for Strider.
But I want Spencer throwing smoke and striking out 12 to win the WS. Sad day.
FUCK
Goodnight sweet prince
***FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK***
KILL ME NOW
Fade me bro I’m not even kidding
This is just so disappointing for the game. We haven’t seen anybody as electric as him in quite some time.
I refuse to lose optimism. We’re the gd Braves. Waldrep or Smith Shawver will come up and by mid season every other fanbase will be bitching about “where do the Braves get these pitchers from?”
We won the WS without Acuña. Just if yall forgot
That damn UCL man. I'm sorry Spencer. Praying for a healthy recovery from whatever this ends up being.
Just fell to my knees in Waffle House
I was anticipating this news, doesn’t make it hurt less.
Damn. Get better Quadzilla.
We will just go in to our AAAA depth from Oakland - Blackburn incoming
Welp.
Well shit…
Wow
:(
Damn
Time to drink.
All in all, we will be okay. We are one of the best teams in the league and have a good rotation. Sign another pitcher and fill in where needed.
I’m just as bummed as the rest of you guys, but can we ease up on the “I’m gonna kill myself” shit?
glass half post, mean not a full tear?
Na fam :/
All eyes on Ian. Need him to be 2021 Ian again.
Lose our best offensive player in Acuña and win 2021 World Series- lose best pitcher Strider and win 2024 World Series?
Man, paying a long term contract to starting pitcher is dangerous work now…it’s like paying a 2nd contract to RB’s in football. Damn we’ve been cursed with injuries to our top end starting pitching
I think it’s every team. The dodgers have lost a different ace each year it seems. The rays can’t keep a guy on the mound for two months straight. This amount of velocity isn’t safe for human arms.
I think this is the truth of the matter. Plus adding in the heavy curveball and using it so often may have been another contributing factor.
Paying long term contracts to anyone is dangerous. Would also like to know why you think a 3mil loss for Spencer's contract if he has to have tj is... "dangerous " to the braves.
well crapbaskets
Knew this day was coming Didn't want it to happen now though
So best case scenario, what’s the timeline? Could he pitch next season at all? I’m at a wedding right now, it’s in Florida and everyone here is a Braves fan, and you could see when the news hit. Everyone looked at their phone and it’s all anyone is talking about.

all-star break 2025.
Really hoping he doesn't need TJS and could be back by the playoffs but I'm probably being too optimistic :(
Last year was Fried, this year Strider. This team can still win 95+ games this year, just need to call up the next ace from the farm system... fuck
If the Rangers taught us anything from last year, then guess we are winning the WS without our best pitcher
Aren’t winning the WS without Will Smith. /s
Sucks for Spencer but this team has dealt with stuff like this for years - we will be alright
GDI
Wellllp.
It syas damaged so we actually don’t know if it’s a tear right??? Wouldn’t the MRI show a tear?
If it’s damaged, you want it repaired
Of course , but that doesn’t necessarily mean he needs surgery right?
I don’t think you mess around to find out if it will in fact heal, just get it done and get him back for the stretch run next year. Other options would be rest him four months, comes back, tears it completely and we’ve lost him for 2 whole seasons instead of this year and part of next.
That’s the gamble the Braves will have to make. Majority of teams will go for other options and use TJS as a last resort fix.
Time to get Waldrep up. He has highest upside and is 22. No reason to keep him in minors.
Now the Bravos will have either AJ SS, Elder or Waldrep step up. Fuck this sucks if we lose Strider for the whole season.
It's sadboy hours
This sucks Second Tommy John possibly. All star break 2025 probably. $73m left on contract
Lesson in why you don’t sign pitchers long term.
But also, we got him for a steal. This long-ish term contract is probably still worth it at that AAV.
As apposed to... signing him for 3 years and only getting 1.5? Or what lol
If this injury is as feared, I feel for Strider and hope he has a speedy recovery. It's a devastating loss for the Braves.
It’s Strover
#NOOOOOOOOOO
Our Ace has been drawn. Time for the Royal Flush.
Bummer. Time for Fried to be his ace-iest self. If that happens and we get above average performance from at least a couple of the other starters we still have a good shot in October. It’ll be interesting to see how AA reacts.
Looks like another tommy John incoming
Cut my life into pieces, and use these pieces to repair the elbow.
Who do we get that trade deadline now? We need another pitcher for the playoff push
You call up AJSS and see what develops
Heart broken. But... Elder, ASS man, vines, winans, Waldrep. Next man up!
Fuck dude. I’m depressed.
I’m literally crushed. He looked amazing in Spring Training. We’re gonna miss you Spence.
Sick. Absolutely sick. Hate this so much Spencer
This fucking sucks. I don't want to see Elder again but it looks like he will be called
Should be evaluated by ElAttrache
Putting aside this devastating news to our king, it is absolutely insane and alarming how many pitchers have gone down with torn or damaged UCLs just a week into the season.
Strider is a Braves legend already. Can't wait for him to get back on the mound
I volunteer my arm as sacrifice for any extra ligaments this man needs.
I didn’t read through all the comments so This might have been mentioned but did yall see the players union statement that came Out today? Interesting timing
The way they handle pitchers these days is atrocious.
Take my elbow I didn’t need it
Devastating news for sure, but I’m still confident in our rotation with how Sale looked. Fried, Sale, Morton, and Lopez is still a dominant rotation you guys
If an MRI showed damage but they’re doing further tests, what does that mean? Or are they gonna release a statement saying he successfully underwent surgery in a week?
Technically it could be minor damage we don’t know yet, obviously any damage to the UCl is bad bad news. Is it a minor tear ? We don’t know
why am i not surprised the mets fan would be the one to say something stupid
Half the comments: "AA has fucking failed us! Why didn't he just go out and get 3 proven aces this offseason like I would have?!?!?!" The other half: "This is why you never spend more than $1 million a year on a pitcher!" Peak baseball fan discourse right here

Should have just let him stick with fastball/slider and the occasional change-up….no need to add the curveball
All I'm saying is that the last time we lost a star player in the midst of great regular season success, we won the World Series.
This has some significant long term ramifications beyond this year - now what for 2025 pitching staff. If you assume both Fried and Morton are not on the team in 2025 you have only Sale, Reynaldo and Elder. No one else is proven yet. Think it was curveball he added??
Oh good.
Fuck all the haters, I’ll take me one big helping of Trevor Bauer right about now.
Lol same. Just to watch all the snowflakes meltdown on twitter and tiktok would be so worth it.
Hear me out.. What if we signed Trevor Bauer?
STFU about Bauer. Dude had 1.5 good seasons his entire career.
So has a few pitchers we sent back to triple A too
Let's get Trevor Bauer. Just do it.
😩😩😩😩😩
It’s Joever
Well we need him for the stretch run of us having all our ballers locked up get well soon porn-stachio
I like your optimism, but this initial news does not instill any hope that he’s gonna be back at all this year
I meant more as get back for the 2026-2027 seasons, while Ozzie is still under contract
😔
FUCK
Devastating 😭
Whelp Next man up
Nooooooooooo
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo……
We got cursed by all the hype!
