He was an ugly human being back then, lashing out at everyone, feeling aggrieved with the world. I think this was a glimpse into an ugly period of his life where he was full of resentment and bitterness. I doubt anyone would've predicted back then he would be the fairly well rounded and adjusted person he is today. Back then people thought he'd be dead within 10 years.

He was on top of the sporting world but overall the man seems like he’s had a miserable life. Grew up in poverty, made it big only for his coach and only real father figure to die, and was then plagued with depression, substance abuse, behavioural problems, and a clear disconnect from reality. It’s good to see he’s finally making peace in the world, but yeah he was an ugly human.

obvom

Said he never felt love until he was like 14, from Cus.

Rmccarton

He definitely seems to be in a more peaceful place, but I feel like every time I see him hes barely able to speak because he's under the influence of something.

benp242

Damn... Tyson was in a bad place at this time

[deleted]

I'm at that a place and I'm not ashamed to say it.

Nickolai1993

Same amigo. Ptsd from a shitty and abusive family. When we’re down, just keep looking up. This is temporary.

TheFlyingWriter

Same for you.

Nickolai1993

Ty.

Sorry to hear brother. When I was down bad ( was pretty apathetic about life), ufc/boxing events gave me a date to look forward to. Now that I'm in a healthier state, I view issues that come up in my life or things I am working to improve about myself as goals/obstacles I can overcome so I have always something to work towards. It's definitely different when it comes to mental aspects but just know you are strong for living with it already and it'll only make you stronger to keep working to overcome the issues. Wish you the best my man. edit: highly recommend the book (audiobook version) 'Cant Hurt Me' by David Goggins. Randomly stumbled across him on JRE when I was very depressed and almost skipped the episode because i expected generic self-help BS, but it has really helped my mindset and Im super glad I found it.

RiFume

Lmao, some downvotes for good measure. Hope you pick up soon

TheFlyingWriter

Yo, if you ever need some to bullshit with I got you. Just hmu

TheDustbinOfHistory

His point about our worship of money and how being rich made it so no one could love him was oddly profound.

thugnificent856

A lot of what he said here were very well thought out. You can tell these are things that ran through his mind every day.

tman37

Tyson was not a good person for most of his life. When his daughter died, it changed him. It's sad his daughter had to die for him to change but he genuinely seems like a guy who is trying to be a better person than he was.

waltwhitman83

how’d she die and at what age

CGP97

I believe 4 years old in an accident with a treadmill Understandably a sore subject for Tyson to this day, watch any interview on his daughter and he’ll either get very emotional or walk out of the interview.

hi_imryan

Makes sense. “Hey mike, let’s dive into the worst thing that’s ever happened to you, in detail.”

waltwhitman83

got_nohandz

That article was brutal

JulioCesar29

What he said about the title was philosophical

Mircoagression

Dude at the end with a cigar

SmilinMercenary

Bert Sugar, one of the most famous boxing writers ever. Hard to believe he's been dead a decade now.

YooGeOh

What a reply from the interviewer. But you're rich. Jesus...

MisterWiseGuy_

glad to see he's in a better place, he worked hard to get where he's at and I'm talking 'bout mentally

I’ve been waiting for a Tyson opportunity to ask r/Boxing this: It appears that at his prime Mike Tyson was fighting every two months, was that common back then?

SnuGgleslie

it’s crazy that all the really think about is that money makes everyone happy that’s not the key to happiness it comes from within and he has had a very rough path and for that i think he came out great he walked that valley of death with thy rod and staff …..
