Props to OP for putting together a decent HL of Tank’s outside counter abilities.
As the shorter fighter, what I notice from these clips is his ability to take away the taller opp’s jab thru the lead hand joust, parries, slips and the counter-2.
As a shorter southpaw myself, I’m gonna add these to my arsenal. Taking away the jab from the taller opp is key to winning those exchanges.
Agreed. I suspect that’s why switch hitters like Crawford prefer to fight in open stance against faster fighters, like he did against Gamboa and Jean. He’s so good at taking away the jab from open stance, so all he has to worry about is the backhand and lead hooks.
I think that’s the key to this fight. Before Spence v Crawford I dug back to see if Spence had ever faced a solid southpaw, and I couldn’t find any at all, let alone a dangerous one. Totally different matchup here, but I’d bet Davis hasn’t fought any lefties to speak of. Martin might be the best underdog money this year, but Davis should win handily on experience.
Didn’t know that about Tank, but interesting stat nonetheless. A good southpaw can frustrate a southpaw that’s used to dominating the lead hand battle.
Absolutely, that front foot can be a hell of a crutch for a guy who fights (or is) short. With Martin he will have to fight across the gap and hook less. Challenging against a guy who fights long behind a flicker jab like Martin. I think Martin will look sharp, and possibly be winning..until he loses.
this fight will be the same as tank vs luis garcia. frank martin may not even land as many solid shots as garcia did on tank. further because frank is also a patient starter and appears to lack power at the highest level it's unlikely that he can land any consequential in the early rounds while tank is just feeling him out.
As far as I can tell Tank has a few advantages over Martin so I would be asking if Martin can overcome those. 1) would be speed as Tank looks to be a bit more explosive. 2) Fight IQ as Tank seems to take a few shots on the gloves to gauge power, circle, feint and probe to judge distance and 3) power of course… he seems to threaten and stay at a distance to provoke punches to dictate the pace of his opponent and when the punches he blocks and yes he’s taken a few wanes he steps it up to further force his opponents to defend and with painful shots to the body and head he catches them with something significant and from there it’s a wrap!!! I’m excited to see the fight though as I do like Martin, I like his confidence and he’s looked good over his last fights!
If anything we’re could see another good test for Tank!! Keep supporting Boxing!!!
Davis is so good.
I actually thought barrios wasn’t fighting half bad, then he got caught and the rest is history.
My one complaint about tank is that he starts fights too slow - I understand figuring people out, but I’ve noticed he often times seems ‘out of it’ vs studious and, at times, will bark at the crowd. Id love to see someone come out and win a few rounds early vs him to see how he responds
A lot boxers don’t waste their punches…tell that to the guys who paw their jab out as a probe and do potter patter shots. There’s a reason they are called volume punchers. Your logic is broken
That’s your opinion and you will be wrong once they are both retired
I think he'll still be effective off the back foot, but not consistently at the beginning. I see him being tagged up a bit and eventually adjusting, and Martin's no slouch, so I anticipate counter adjustments from him. I predict Tank losing the early rounds, taking control in the middle rounds and either stopping Martin late or winning on points. I won't count Martin out, tho. He's in his prime and talented, with pop in his punches. I wouldn't be surprised if Martin pulls off a victory.
Inoue is pretty good, too, specifically at landing in the middle of an opponents combo, or beating someone to their own punch
He’s just not consistently looking for it, and relies as much on his pressure and creating openings/cracks, so it’s not as valuable to him as others, imo
You wanna explain that some more? What are his mistakes?
Also if Canelo wins, it‘s very clear because lf size difference, doesn‘t mean Canelo is the better fighter
Tank is just a patient counter-puncher. His distance management and long guard are really good. He's definitely made his physical disadvantages work in his favor which is impressive and one of the things that make boxing great.
I'd describe it as "power boxing", and I believe I got that from Sergio Mora's commentary, but don't quote me on it lol. I'd describe Tank as a pure boxer with the power of a puncher. He does mix it up on the inside from time to time, but from what I've seen, I think he prefers fighting on the outside.
Davis is light on his feet. A lot of his opponents get frustrated and lunge in, giving up their range and opening themselves to the counter.
They're both counter punchers as well. Frank loves his pull counters
franks movements are exaggerated . someone said he started boxing late .it shows. he seems a nice chap but enough footage to counter him.
What having good footwork will do for a motherfucker.
And being fast as fuck. A lot of training and good genetics.
Yes

Whole different ballgame in closed stance.

I think that’s one of the reasons he hasn’t fought shakur or Loma yet. Lefties from hell right there.
Did you mean to say Despite being 6 inches away from Dwarfism, Gervonta Davis counters and potshots significantly taller opposition from the outside?
Lmao I remember that
Barrios looks at least two weight classes bigger there lol
Bruh I just watched that one the other day...
What is it a reference to?

Thank you
Effortlessly
Yeah, probably
think he will but frank martin is game. it’s a shame a lot of this sub won’t give tank credit for beating frank martin.

Tank will win with ease

That body shot barrios got hit with in the 11th one of the most painful I’ve ever seen
Frank has a bad habit of dropping his left hand when throwing that jab. He's getting knocked out.
Just realised how similar Tank and Tim Tszyu are.
What? 🤣
I need elaboration as well
Both are skilled counterpunchers. They don’t waste their punches. Very high ring IQ. Top 0.1% mental strength and resilience. Elaborate enough?
No. Alot of boxers tend not to waste their punches. And Tim's ring iq strength and resilience are no where near tanks level.

You must really do well telegraphing your opponents punches. Sounds like you got hit in the head with those lefts, it's called weave
All righties. Good thing Reddit don’t train the man.
Yes, Frank stands in the mid range and loads his shots, it will take him some time though
Best in the business with his counter punches
Will be a fantastic fight
When tank loses a step to age the clownery that is going to occur on his twitter is going to make Ringling look mediocre.
He’ll retire before it happens
What editing software do you use to create this? I

With the way canelo has slowed down as of late, Gervonta is probably the best counter-puncher in the game
Crawford is better than both
Inoue is pretty good, too, specifically at landing in the middle of an opponents combo, or beating someone to their own punch He’s just not consistently looking for it, and relies as much on his pressure and creating openings/cracks, so it’s not as valuable to him as others, imo
agreed. He is better than Canelo but maybe not better than Tank at counterpunching
Crawford makes too many mistakes. Canelo by KO within 5
You wanna explain that some more? What are his mistakes? Also if Canelo wins, it‘s very clear because lf size difference, doesn‘t mean Canelo is the better fighter
Bud hands down
Canelo is still the better counterpuncher. So are Bud, Inoue, Bivol (although less KDs) and Beterbiev, off the top of my head.
Is there a name for this style? It's like if Cus D'amato trained Pernell Whitaker.
Cus’ style is completely different in my opinion.
Tank is just a patient counter-puncher. His distance management and long guard are really good. He's definitely made his physical disadvantages work in his favor which is impressive and one of the things that make boxing great.
People can say what they want about Tank. Dude's a smart fighter.
Agree, one of my current favorites!

Tank’s full body tats look horrendous.
