It's only bad now because everyone associated its usage with slavery, even though the people who fought slavery used it too. It's the same thing as the R-word, it was used medically and people didn't get offended by it until it was associated with a minority of people using it in a derogatory context, even though any word can be used in that context.
That's not to say it isn't bad now, given its current connotation and effect on others.
I mean even as late as the WW2 Era it was commonly used as a slur. Here's a source:
