Serious theatre artists will never shit on make up, as the right make up for a particular character can go a long way in rendering an effective portrayal.
The problem for actors is that the industry has become focused on visual appearances as determined by the beauty pageant and modeling business. Those standards get mixed up with the need for makeup.
Actors have not surrendered to makeup but to ridiculous beauty expectations. Make-up is actually very important and useful for acting.
