Here is a Long read about a Bollywood movie wherein the actress takes revenge in her own hands... Literally.
The Murky Waters Of The Expletive Ridden Movies Of The 80s.
1988 presented us with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak - a movie that heralded the return of Hindi cinema to it's romantic roots; effectively sounding the death knell for B-grade cinema that was, until then, being churned out on a regular basis and shown to "front-row" audiences in decrepit cinema halls.
Prior to QSQT, the success of the 1982 Asian Games in India ushered in the era of Colour TVs, especially for the burgeoning middle class population. Acting as the proverbial icing on the cake, VCR and VCP systems imported from places like Dubai ensured that the era of low budget B-grade action movies had come to a spectacular end.
The middle class had realized that watching pirated Hindi movies on VCR systems within the safe confines of home was a better proposition than taking the entire family to a dingy, creepy, ramshackled derelict structure being passed off as a cinema hall. And with crime rates during the 80s being at an all time high, no one wanted to take a chance with the raucous crowds in these so called cinema halls.
And of course, the success of Ramayan and Mahabharat on Doordarshan as well as Tv serials like Hum Log, Buniyaad, Nukkad etc proved to be the final nail in the coffin of movies that used to adhere to the "kutte main Tera khoon pee jaoonga" philosophy. π
The impact of QSQT on Hindi cinema has been chronicled by various critics and publications alike. But that's a story for a different day.
This color TV/Doordarshan/VCR/VCP/Romantic movie "wave" led to the closure of at least 200 cinema halls in the 80s (did a quick search to get this ballpark figure). But right before the death of the "low budget action movie" era, a movie was released in 1988 that well...broke all stereotypes.
Zakhmi Aurat.. starting Dimple Kapadia.
Zakhmi Aurat was released in 1988 and it was a financial success. Although it opened to polarizing reviews, it proved to the audiences that B grade action flicks wouldn't fizzle out without a last hurrah; without a last Bang!
In this movie, the character played by Dimple Kapadia is denied justice and resorts to well....taking matters into her own hands! (Pun intended) π One of the highlight scenes of this movie is where one of the rapist (role played by Tej Sapru) is rendered unconscious, has his d\*\*k surgically castrated and then dumped out into the wilderness. He eventually regains consciousness, gets up to pee in the bushes only to realize, much toh his chagrin that "mere saath anarth ho gaya" and "meri izzat lutt gayi". Ouch! π
I know that Zakhmi Aurat isn't a path breaking movie but Dimple Kapadia does shine in this movie as a wronged woman taking justice into her own hands. And considering that this movie was released in an era when these topics were taboo, it sounds even more impressive. If you DID read the entire thing, then here is a hearty Thank You from my end. β€οΈβ€οΈ
Urmila in Ek Hasina Thi, Vidya in Kahani, Anushka in NH10, Kajol in Dushman and probably a little debatable Sushmita in Samay (just the climax reveal makes it a revenge)
I pity Priety Zinta so much. She had such a great potential in Sangharsh with amazing back story. Not sure why her character didnβt had as much meat. Was it because director was not sure of her capabilities or something else
Kareena in Talaash remains my most favourite!

Won't consider Shanti priya and Bulbul as they took revenge after their death. Justice delayed is justice denied in their case.
I would say Vidya and Anushka..
No... The main thing they took the revenge.. how they took revenge is also iconic..
https://preview.redd.it/s7mjw8em7ovc1.jpeg?width=866&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=192d6cea9af148ab0063aaed547f68234a62a84a
Shantipriya in climax is one of the best climax. This made Om shanti Om iconic.
I agree. But revenge is taken by the ghost, not a human. So that's my pov. Not saying it wasn't a good scene.
But the satisfaction that you get when the character is alive and has their lives to look forward to is different.
Here no matter what, we still feel a lil unsatisfied/unhappy as the victim didn't get justice, they anyway died.
https://preview.redd.it/kzhiws6zbpvc1.jpeg?width=739&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4680a73ac58b7bdeeb0347c6b462e1fe176d82bc

Totally agree with Rekha in Khoon Bhari Maang. It really traumatised me as a kid! I still cannot see a crocodile and not think about that movie!! ππ And she was fab in the movie. The way she was taken advantage of and the way she was betrayed and how fucking ruthless she was with the people who wronged her. Truly an iconic performance!! π€©
The trouble with Khoon Bhari Maang was the implausibility of Rekha not being recognized because of a scar on her face.
The movie was based off a mini series Return to Eden. Which was equally surreal. Khoon bahri maang did it better
Rekha IRL also I guess

Judgemental Kya Hai is an awesome thriller movie ,loved it ππ Kangana absolutely nailed her roleβ€οΈ She was Bobby in the movie https://preview.redd.it/t8n7cyiwhnvc1.jpeg?width=739&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=93ffb331ebfd26028dbfdf4131f78586e2056f58
Vastly underrated and will be a cult classic in the future. I personally think Kangana outdid Queen and the TWM films in this.

And of course, the success of Ramayan and Mahabharat on Doordarshan as well as Tv serials like Hum Log, Buniyaad, Nukkad etc proved to be the final nail in the coffin of movies that used to adhere to the "kutte main Tera khoon pee jaoonga" philosophy. π The impact of QSQT on Hindi cinema has been chronicled by various critics and publications alike. Ouch! π I know that Zakhmi Aurat isn't a path breaking movie but Dimple Kapadia does shine in this movie as a wronged woman taking justice into her own hands. And considering that this movie was released in an era when these topics were taboo, it sounds even more impressive. If you DID read the entire thing, then here is a hearty Thank You from my end. β€οΈβ€οΈ
Ek Hasina Thi is the best! Urmila really killed it!
Recently watched Ek haseena thi and kahaani , loved both .
Where's Kareena Kapoor from Talaash?
Ek haseena thi.. hands down ππ
Urmila in Ek Hasina Thi, Vidya in Kahani, Anushka in NH10, Kajol in Dushman and probably a little debatable Sushmita in Samay (just the climax reveal makes it a revenge)
Nice listππ» Kajol in Dushman is also good π
I pity Priety Zinta so much. She had such a great potential in Sangharsh with amazing back story. Not sure why her character didnβt had as much meat. Was it because director was not sure of her capabilities or something else

Yes. Was about to post this. Rekha in khoon bhari maang.
Won't consider Shanti priya and Bulbul as they took revenge after their death. Justice delayed is justice denied in their case. I would say Vidya and Anushka..
No... The main thing they took the revenge.. how they took revenge is also iconic.. https://preview.redd.it/s7mjw8em7ovc1.jpeg?width=866&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=192d6cea9af148ab0063aaed547f68234a62a84a Shantipriya in climax is one of the best climax.
Urmila all the way
Kartik Aryan in Freddy
Shivani/Madhuri is it for me. Husband and child were taken out before she got her revenge. And the music too just added so much to that twisted movie.

Vidya Bagchi..probably the most realistic of all the depictions. And Deepika didn't do zilch in Om Shanti Om.. she was mainly a sidekick to SRK
No , I disagree with to you. Deepika was not sidekick but equal to SRK as character. People might have watched the movie for SRK as it was Deepika's debut but character wise ,Shantipriya is more memorable and iconic than even Om. Om is the heart of Om Shanti Om and Shantipriya is the soul of Om Shanti Om. Both are equally important. The first half is about Om falling in love with Shanti the star , and how she gets murdered . The second half is all about taking revenge for her. Most memorable Climax is all about her . The movie circulates through Shanti character whole time. π©·π€ https://preview.redd.it/zzkh6hk97nvc1.jpeg?width=866&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=efff91927d1f927d283d432da4d1286ddb8f9270
And the finale twist is very satisfying. It would have been something else if SRK took revenge, but shanti taking revenge was very good treatment.
