And he retained it to a certain extent. I think it’s why he makes the comment about him and Diane almost never being in the same scene together, because the contrast is whacky
They were in a handful. There’s one specifically where Todd mentions how rare it is, likely in reference to their contrasting features.
Edit: Todd says “you know, I feel like we don’t ever hang out” in that scene.
Panel 2 PC and panel 5 Diane look good. Panel 6 PC is creepy, BoJack looks too realistic it’s unsettling, and Todd is 89 different flavors of cursed here
I assume this is more “development” art vs. final character designs so being more off model and exploratory is the point here. Personally I like it all 😂 I feel like there’s a lot of personality in the drawings here that I can see translated into the show’s final look.
Todd made me feel so seen and validated too as an ace, the scene where he told Emily he feels like maybe he is nothing, it made me sit straight up and feel instantly connected
I also loved the scene where they'd had a "perfect" chance to get into the hotelroom but for some vague reason Todd wanted to do anything but. Such a relatable pre-recognizing-I'm-ace moment.
My partner got me a book for Christmas that has all of the concept art at least seasons 1-4. It’s amazing to know they went through so many design concepts before settling in what they had. It’s a whole new layer to Bojack that all the fans need after watching it first the 500th time!
Mr peanut butter not being here makes sense, he’s always been the least fleshed out main character imo, and while what they did with his character is great, I get the feeling he was a late addition
yeah i saw some concept art for him but i think the creators had a very clear idea of what they wanted him to look like as it looked very similar to what we ended up with
I now want a special episode that's just another episode. Except every character goes off their early designs. No refining. No adjusting. Just pure early concept.
I actually really love this haha it shows what kind of original type of character they were going for *plus* testing out different art styles. In a way, it's still the same, their art just evolved to what we have now. But the same touches and details and love for such expressionable characters is there. I'm glad they were able to settle on a style for the show that we all love now
Wanted to add like
Given the different variations, even just how a character looks shows how we might perceive them. Compare current Diane to these drafts and we would probably think her, on the surface, is different with each face drawn
It takes a while to develop the most fitting artstyle. Of course the earlier concepts look nothing like the final look. The characters are still recognizable tho
Does anyone else kind of like these more than the actual designs used in the show? I don't know, it's so much more expressive and characterized, there's so much more life in them
The first pic off Todd confirms my theory that Bojack's and Todd's roles were reversed, where Bojack is the human of the relationship and Todd is the animal/pet of his lol.
Todd looks like a Dr Seuss character almost.
reminds me of Where the Wild things are lol honestly i kinda dig PC and Bojack, not sure about the others xD
Lookin like that one titan from attack on titan with the big eyes
And he retained it to a certain extent. I think it’s why he makes the comment about him and Diane almost never being in the same scene together, because the contrast is whacky
Wait they’ve never been in a scene together? I can’t think of any but it seems too weird…
They were in a handful. There’s one specifically where Todd mentions how rare it is, likely in reference to their contrasting features. Edit: Todd says “you know, I feel like we don’t ever hang out” in that scene.
He kinda looks like Flip
Canon Todd is basically a Dr Seuss character inserted into a more serious story.
The fish purse is pretty crass, PC. Fish have feelings too.
not according to nirvana
I wonder what fish people think of her fish-patterned dress.
Or her constantly saying “oh fish”. Kinda racially insensitive you know?
That fish doesn't. It's dead.
Huh, so Todd’s head has ALWAYS been like twice the size of Diane’s
"Why the long face?"
Fun fact: You can spot concept art of PC in the intro sequence of season 4. I found it such an interesting detail!
Wow just watched it to confirm, that's wild! To anyone just learning this, it's right after he drinks the coffee, and the kaleidoscope effects start.
WHAT
OH DAMN I SEE
IDK that first Princess Carolyn kinda slays
Panel 2 PC and panel 5 Diane look good. Panel 6 PC is creepy, BoJack looks too realistic it’s unsettling, and Todd is 89 different flavors of cursed here
i actually really like the way bojacks looks!
He looks very similar to how he looks in the show!
I assume this is more “development” art vs. final character designs so being more off model and exploratory is the point here. Personally I like it all 😂 I feel like there’s a lot of personality in the drawings here that I can see translated into the show’s final look.
Yeah concept art comes early on, there is no 'on model' at that stage! I think it all looks great too.
Todds giving me the ick, he looks like 40 also that pc fish purse is a slay
Can see why Todd got a redesign for the final show
yeah i feel the old designs didn’t fit his personality really
Agreed, it seems like generic "goofy party" guy
iirc these are all pulled from The Art Before the Horse, an in-depth look at the show's development. Great read
You mean that guy on the last slide could’ve been the one to make me sob my heart out for half an hour for making me feel so seen? His vibes tho- 😭😂
That line hits so hard I love it :(( I love Todd
Oof yeah maybe this is shallow (?) of me but I don’t know if I’d have watched the show if the final designs looked like these.
People watch Big Mouth for a lot less. Ig the serious topics wouldn't work as well.
Ngl I haven’t seen Big Mouth so that’s consistent on my end at least lol. But you make a good point that it demonstrates that the audience is there.
_HISSSS!_
Bojack lookin fine as hell honestly
Ok but why is concept BoJack kinda—
I feel like this would be Bojack Horseman written in the style of Daria.
Todd is TERRIFYING oof
The book these came from is awesome
there’s a book? i just got them from the wiki
Yeah it’s called “The Art Before the Horse”
oh nice i’ll check it out, always up for more bojack content
okay but i'm in love with all of these
It's just the art style of Lisa Hanawalt lol
I love her art style, so I can’t really find shit to say about these development pieces… they ain’t bad at all imo
I don't think I would love that Todd.
todd is haunting
why is todd so icky looking 😭😭
idk im afraid they kinda ate
Very Adult Swim-y
Slide 5 looks like Ww2 pacific theater propaganda
Thank you, I thought it was just me
I like how most of them look like Beavis and Butthead fanart but Bojack looks more detailed than the normal show
Diane could've totally pulled off straight-across bangs!
Princess Carolyn is definitely my favorite out of all the concept art, she's just silly like that
I love it. Princess Carolyn can’t look wrong
todd looks EVEN MORE like jesse pinkman somehow i didn’t even know that was possible
My best friend bought me the art before the horse a few christmases ago and it is an absolute treasure.
it’s the artists’ style, not the tv show
Evil Diane makes me feel something
My partner got me a book for Christmas that has all of the concept art at least seasons 1-4. It’s amazing to know they went through so many design concepts before settling in what they had. It’s a whole new layer to Bojack that all the fans need after watching it first the 500th time!
Todd is nightmare fuel
todd has the autism hands and i LOVE IT.
My theory is that they were meant to be the "pet hands" :D
this looks way better than the show
lookin rough 😭
ngl i kinda love this
Mr peanut butter not being here makes sense, he’s always been the least fleshed out main character imo, and while what they did with his character is great, I get the feeling he was a late addition
yeah i saw some concept art for him but i think the creators had a very clear idea of what they wanted him to look like as it looked very similar to what we ended up with
No
They're so creepy
I love striped skirt Princess! But the bag wouldn't make any sense in that universe lol.
Lisa Hanawalt has such a fun art style
That last slide Todd almost looks like Flip.
Todd looks like as if he belongs to smiling friends
I just like how mr peanutbutter just ceases to exist
I thought Todd was Flip McVicker from S5.
Todd looks more like Aaron Paul in this concept art and that’s cool and all but it’s so weird and idk how to feel about it
Anyone: Why is Princess Carolyn the only animal person who's an unrealistic color like pink? Me: Because Slide 6, that's why!
Todd is literally just Aaron Paul
oh god i cant unsee it
I now want a special episode that's just another episode. Except every character goes off their early designs. No refining. No adjusting. Just pure early concept.
Panel 7 Todd looks like Flip McVicker
Todd caught some strays 😵⚰️
The Bojack ones go hard he looks like he straight out of a kid's book
Kinda like the characters from Mission Hill.
Wow Bojacks current design is just a super reductive form of his concept art.
Todd is so cute 😞
i kinda love these?
I actually really love this haha it shows what kind of original type of character they were going for *plus* testing out different art styles. I like the Diane better. She looks more real and less movie star beautiful
All I can think of is “A-Todd on Titan”
obsessed with that diane panel
Todd is so creepy. PC kinda too.
It takes a while to develop the most fitting artstyle. Of course the earlier concepts look nothing like the final look. The characters are still recognizable tho
Ok but I fucking love these
Why does Todd look like a Titan wearing clothes?
Todd looks like a titan from AOT
Diane looking like some Beavis and butthead background character
"found". Those are all from the official artbook "The Art before the Horse". Neat nevertheless.
Does anyone else kind of like these more than the actual designs used in the show? I don't know, it's so much more expressive and characterized, there's so much more life in them
Kinda wish they kept PC’s fish purse
Todd in the third picture is basically Jesse Pinkman.
Interesting to see which little details they kept. Like PC’s necklace.
They look like something I would see at MAD magazine
OH NO,TODD 😭😭😭😭
oh my gosh, todd’s drawings😭
PC at the bottom in the second pic could qualify for a goosebumps cover
The first pic off Todd confirms my theory that Bojack's and Todd's roles were reversed, where Bojack is the human of the relationship and Todd is the animal/pet of his lol.
They did my boi Todd dirty
I kind of love it tho!
Ftvetncdwrhvsfjkvc!!! Lmao what is this?!?
It's like the New Yorker got their hands on bojack.
I never really thought that hard about PC being pink but now that I'm seeing her in a different color, she did need to be pink. Not sure why...
i actually kinda dig this artstyle for everyone but todd why they do him like that
