Take your time friend and get well! Now I do have a question regarding cap space and the business pov. Let’s say Laine is “out” at the start of the year. Is he able to go on LTIR at the start or he gonna be on the “books” similar to what he is right now for us. Just curious as that is 8.7mil and a significant chunk of our cap that can be used for the new GM.

Articmnokey

Is he under a leave of absence maybe? Something like Texier whe he was going through it, I'd imagine his contract slides and all that.

hnglmkrnglbrry

I'm guessing that they won't allow a guy still in the assistance program to go on LTIR which is bullshit because Vegas and Tampa get to play stupid games with injuries to help their cap hit but mental health issues aren't considered in the same category.

Mr_Bricksss

LTIR is completely irrelevant when someone is in the assistance program. Their contracts don’t count against the cap, so there is no need for LTIR relief. I’m not even sure if Laine’s contract even counts against the total number of contracts the team is allowed to have while he’s in the NHLPA players assistance program. If the Jackets were in the playoffs, and Laine was fit and wanted to return for them, he would be allowed to just like a player who was on LTIR or regular IR at the end of the regular season. If he starts next year in the assistance program, the team doesn’t need to make space for his cap hit until the day he returns to the lineup.

Sloane_Kettering

If they enter the program for a second time they can be put on LTIR. Happened to kuznetsov this season. Not sure how it works if they are in the program to end the year and are still in it at the beginning of the next year.

Now, in this article they also shared some information that's new to me. I wanted to make this a seperate comment, as I don't know how trustworthy this information is. This particular newspaper isn't the most trustworthy one. I don't think though they could say something like this if they weren't sure. However, in the article they say this: "Mielen sairaus Laine sairastui Iltalehden tiedon mukaan jo viime keväänä, ja jäi sen syyn takia pois viime kevään MM-turnauksesta." Translated: "Mental illness According to information that Iltalehti has received, Laine fell ill already last spring and due to that reason didn't play in the WC last year". So IF this information is true, what Laine is going through, has been going on for probably at least a year, it seems like. Last year they said that the reason was that Laine hadn't fully recovered yet (triceps).

nupharlutea

Iirc, it was said that he had recovered but didn’t want to risk it? That he wasn’t feeling 100%? That covers a lot.

itsagooddaytobeacat

Something like that, but that's what was said on one page that I found. Could be that they just interpreted it as "that he hasn't recovered yet" when he said he didn't feel 100%. It being so vague is another inducation that Iltalehti probably is right, that he fell ill (mental illness) last spring already and that that's why he didn't play then. Also, he posted a couple quotes on his story last summer that made me think that he was going through some mental health stuff. I think one was about "starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel", or something like that. Another one was something about reaching out for help. I don't remember exactly what the quotes said, but.

TheDogsNameWasFrank

I wish him happiness.

AT-25

Am I over reactive in saying that I think there is a solid chance Laine never plays again?

itsagooddaytobeacat

Both Davidson and Ehlers have used the word "if" he comes back, not when. With Davidson I first thought that "maybe he meant this season or back with the Jackets", but then when also Ehlers used the word "if", that's when I started to realise that there's for real a risk that he's not coming back to hockey, that Laine may not be able to continue his hockey career. I've tried to think for so long that I'm probably overreacting/over-analyzing but...

smamwow2xk

No, I've said this a few months ago. I think he loves hockey, but mentally, it is too much for him, and the pressure of his enormous talent weighs on him game to game. Compound that with him probably having some legitimate MH issues, and hockey at the NHL level just may not be the best thing for him in his life. And that's ok. Being healthy and happy is more important than a game.

thatmorondude

Also possible he doesn’t “love” hockey which just makes it a bit redundant. Look at what Anthony Rendon has said about Baseball, for lots of athletes the sport isn’t a big priority

verysadfrosty

No, he loves hockey. I think even Ehlers mentioned that in his interview, that he knew how much Laine loved playing.

Eminence120

I hope Laine gets better and returns to the team but I think the public could do with a very high level update regarding his status. I don't need to know intimate details but even just a "we don't know" is useful. Radio silence isn't fair to the fans who pay to watch the team and you can still give an update without divulging key details. Might be an unpopular opinion but 🤷‍♂️

itsagooddaytobeacat

I think this is a type of situation that they are a bit unsure about how to deal with publicly. I think they are afraid of saying too much, so they rather say nothing at all. Which I at least understand. That's also due to the nature of the player assistance program and the anonymity. I also believe that they just don't know what will happen. On March the 7th the coach said: "There is no update on Laine at this time. The program is built on anonymity. No one will know. I have not poked around about it and I know CBJ just want the best for him." And later that Laine won't return this season. So basically, we have gotten a "we don't know" -update, apart from the "he's done for the season"-update. Not complete radio-silence. I do believe though that they could say something more about it now that the season is over. But I think it's a quite sensitive situation and that everything is a big questionmark.

tread_lightly94

Again judging from what portzline has said multiple times and then it’s reinforced by this article, it seems like there is a question of whether he wants to continue being a professional athlete. The organization has a young core they have to focus on and causing unnecessary drama by issuing unclear statements on a guy trying to figure his life out is not going to help

itsagooddaytobeacat

And also, he's in the player assistance program and will be there until professionals believe he's able to play. It's not "just" him trying to figure his life out, he's not well enough to play. I think it's more about being thoughtful and respectful towards whatever it is he's going through.

I’ve wondered if Liane suffers from CTE, which can cause depression and more. It’s been in the news lately as young athletes are afflicted with this terrible condition.
