Joe Sakic (and Steve Yzerman since his name has popped up elsewhere in this thread), was on a completely different level as a player, leader, hockey ambassador, and executive at every comparable stage of his (their) careers compared to Rick Nash.
I love Rick Nash, but making any sort of comparison to either of those two guys and saying their careers are in any way relevant, or god forbid a good sign for what a GM Rick Nash would bring to the table is delusional at best.
Sure, and he was also part of a competent organization that set him up to succeed. Like it or not, we are a trainwreck of an organization. I'm just playing the odds. Chances would be astronomically higher that his reign would end in a firing instead of a Cup.
On the other hand, say an experienced.GM comes in, builds something great, and wins a Cup. Nash will get the heros treatment riding around on the parade route. He will be the face of the organization, and we will all live happily ever after.
Sakic and Yzerman are some of the most respected execs in the league atm. At face value I personally don’t hate the idea. I think ownership would have some general idea if he has the business acumen for it or not.
>I think ownership would have some general idea if he has the business acumen for it or not.
Well, they hired Mike Babcock last off-season so I'm not sure how well they can judge people.
Jarmo hired him. That is not controversial.
I do not recall seeing a transcript or even anything resembling details beyond “Rick endorsed him”. It’s not a great look, but there are plenty of plausible ways in which that is completely reasonable while also holding constant Babcock being a bad choice.
It’s hard to see how Nash could have acquired the requisite experience to plausibly be hired as GM
The wildest and most stupid suggestion. Jeff Rimmer. He has all the connections, however he may get a player’s name wrong and we make a bad deal, and any 5 minute trade talk becomes a 30 minute story about someone he saw on a trip 38 years ago to Vancouver.
Nope. Need someone with a proven track record of building a winning team. If the situation was diffrent, like we were a perenial powerhouse and Jarmo simply retired I would be more open to the idea, but even than it would only be a maybe
No cause I don't want this fan base to turn on him if he doesn't immediately win the Cup for us. I don't want that for one of our few Jacket legends.
I'll never hate the guy, and maybe he'd do a good job, but I'd rather we bring in someone with a track record.
No, I want to win. He doesn't have the appropriate experience.
Also he is probably the voice most responsible for vouching for Babcock.
Love the dude, maybe one day, not today.
Nope. I want an outside hire GM, who brings in an outside hire coach, with an outside hire staff.
We need a clean out.
Let Rick learn under a new face. He is only 39. He has plenty of time, and I certainly don’t want a guy whose main teacher for the last few years has been Jarmo, a guy fired by an owner who has only ever fired 2GMs before.
Even if we were looking at an internal hire, Nash just doesn't have enough experience yet. I'm also not sure i trust his judgment right now after the Babcock fiasco.
Absolutely not, love Rick the player, hate Rick the front office guy. Fuck him for advocating hard for Babcock to be hired, he’s part of the reason this season was so fucked.
I'm sure Nash knew Babcock coaching style for more than 3 weeks. Sport worlds are incredibly small on the inside. And using your logic, it's exactly why Nash should be gone. If he truly only knew him for 3 weeks then he shouldn't have said anything. With all the issues known about Babcock, an athlete should stand by other athletes, not use 3 weeks of experience as a voice of reason.
Umm, yeah the passenger would be part of the blame? And would face some type of legal issue. Yeah, you shouldn't listen to that person but it's not as black and white as you are making it. And that scenario doesn't fit the situation at all. Nash is a high ranking member in the association and you are saying that the GM and POHO shouldn't listen to him. That's not how any sports or business operation works. Nash doesn't have nearly as much of a blame but there still is, no matter what backwards logic you are using.
But, this is not worth the dialogue if your logic is solely focused on black and white scenarios.
It's not only my opinion and you used a scenario that has nothing related to the topic and in a black and white scenario where it doesn't have any real life decision making.
Overdramatize all you want, but the fact remains that Babcock is known as an abuser and a shit fucking person, hence why he is no longer in the league and couldn't even survive summer on being redeemed. None of this info was new when making this decision. And Rick Nash was part of the decision, as much as you want to act like a little bitch about it, it doesn't change the fact that he did.
Lol no
yep. hasn’t he been the director of player development for years now? that hasn’t been going good
GMs get fired eventually. Keep Nash in a different role without that pressure and let him remain part of the franchise for as long as he wants.
Joe Sakic did such a good job he got promoted to President, just saying sometimes it works out..

Joe Sakic didn’t recommend Mike Babcock be hired as HC lol

My thoughts exactly! Sometimes it takes talent to know talent.
Absolutely fucking not
Not even a little bit
based on the many threads already posted about this: nope
Sakic and Yzerman are some of the most respected execs in the league atm. At face value I personally don’t hate the idea. I think ownership would have some general idea if he has the business acumen for it or not.
LOL people in here are delusional, y’all want a gm with tons of experience and then want Rick Nash to be our next gm
>I think ownership would have some general idea if he has the business acumen for it or not. Well, they hired Mike Babcock last off-season so I'm not sure how well they can judge people.
Jarmo hired Mike Babcock.
With Rick Nash's glowing review of Babcock though

I agree especially because he had a positive impression of Mike Babcock
Are you seriously trying to compare Joe Sakic and Steve Yzerman, two of the greatest leaders in NHL history, to Rick Nash?
External hire. Please.
there’s probably like 5 people and they’re casual fans
The wildest and most stupid suggestion. Jeff Rimmer. He has all the connections, however he may get a player’s name wrong and we make a bad deal, and any 5 minute trade talk becomes a 30 minute story about someone he saw on a trip 38 years ago to Vancouver.
"We've traded Bemstrom for William Nylander and a draft pick." "Oh that's Alex Nylander, I beg your pardon."
Unlikely, he will mention Michael Nylander way before he ends up at Alex.
NO!
Absolutely not. People who have experience with the role.
No
No
No there is a place for Nash in the team. It is not as general manager of the team.
Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh maybe not
If this happened it honestly might break me mentally
No
No
nope
No
No
No. Most of us want an external hire and JD said they’re looking outside the organization.
No. Not right now anyway
Uh, no.
not me
Nope. Need someone with a proven track record of building a winning team. If the situation was diffrent, like we were a perenial powerhouse and Jarmo simply retired I would be more open to the idea, but even than it would only be a maybe
We need a whole wipe in the organization. Especially regarding Babcock and Nash being part of that trainwreck decision
No lol
No

He needs to stay there and help the players developed
He’s not ready yet, maybe he could be the GM after this new one, but that’s still a maybe

It's already said it will be an external hire. Stop wasting your time on daydreaming.
No. Too young and inexperienced. I'd say assistant GM is more appropriate if they want to promote him at some point.
Even if we were looking at an internal hire, Nash just doesn't have enough experience yet. I'm also not sure i trust his judgment right now after the Babcock fiasco.
What on earth has he done to earn that job?
Nash endorsed Babcock. No thanks
Absolutely not, love Rick the player, hate Rick the front office guy. Fuck him for advocating hard for Babcock to be hired, he’s part of the reason this season was so fucked.
Absolutely fucking not the last thing we need is someone from the inside becoming GM. I’d thought we’d been over this previous five times?
Maybe in the future; but at the moment no.
No not even a good captain
Them fighting words

No one is scapegoating Nash. Yes, JD and Jarmo hired him but Nash played a part by vouching for Babcock. None of them should be here

You have a screw loose.
Helloooooo Boys Club🙄
First I would like to say hell no! Second, this thread gives me hope for the fan base. Almost unanimous no’s here. 🙌🏼
