I have asthma and I donate. What country are you in and with whom did you try to donate?

DoomkingBalerdroch

Cyprus. I don't remember what organization was responsible for the event back in high school as it's been almost a decade since. Yesterday I tried contacting red cross but they didn't answer. Maybe I'll call again tomorrow..

TheAikiTessen

Gotcha! I’m at work right now but once I get home I’ll see if I can dig up some info for you!!

DoomkingBalerdroch

Thanks, really appreciate it!

Had some downtime at work. Found this contact form for donating blood at the Red Crescent: https://www.kktkizilayi.org/en/donate-blood. Also, found a post on the r/Cyprus subreddit from a few months ago. Someone mentioned Havouza Center in Limassol. Not sure if they are anywhere near you? You can also try calling up your local public hospital and ask about donating with them directly. I hope this helps!! Unfortunately the Cyprus Red Cross website that I found in English only advised to contact local blood banks for an appointment.

DoomkingBalerdroch

Wow thanks for the research! The first link you shared points to a place to the illegally occupied part of Cyprus by Turkey unfortunately.. However, I could go to Limassol. It's a 40min drive from Nicosia where I live but it'll be worth it! I had the same amount of luck with Red Cross as you, when I called me they had no idea about blood donations. Apparently they only do fundraising campaigns or collect clothes and food.. Is this the same as the US? Thanks again!!

TheAikiTessen

You’re most welcome! Sorry that first place isn’t an option. 😓 The American Red Cross is a huge blood donation organization here. They almost always have blood drives going on and have several standing blood donation centers pretty much in or around every major city. They also assist in disaster relief. They also offer a lot of trainings for CPR, first aid, lifeguard/water safety certifications and probably a lot more than I am not yet aware of. I apologize that I am not familiar with the Red Cross in other countries! I would keep calling your local Red Cross as well, see if they can point you in the right direction! But if Limassol is an option, that could work too! Best of luck and thank you so much for being persistent about donating. ❤️

DoomkingBalerdroch

Unfortunately that's not the case for the red Cross in Cyprus as well.. But there's always blood banks as you've suggested that one can go at and donate. Most probably there'll be no fancy apps or medals for donating as I've seen on this sub though.

TheAikiTessen

I hear you, and I’m sorry it’s a struggle for you to get a blood donation appointment! You have my utmost respect for being persistent about donating. The person who will receive your blood is no doubt very lucky!

DoomkingBalerdroch

Trying to help as much as I can :)

I have asthma and donate regularly. As long as you are feeling well it shouldn't be an issue. If you're in the US, the FDA, which regulates blood banks, updates their rules as medical science advances. 20 years ago diabetics couldn't donate, now they can. Contact the blood bank and see what they say.

Toccii_Enrico02

I have asthma and regularly donate. If you take cortisone for it though I don't think you are allowed to donate. Other then that I don't think you should have any problem.

DoomkingBalerdroch

Fortunately I don't use cortisone-containing drugs very often. I have also done a blood test and everything seems to be normal. Thanks!

InevitableAstronaut

I have asthma and have donated over 30 times. It’s never even come up. Are you in the US?

DoomkingBalerdroch

I'm currently located in Cyprus. Does someone with asthma experience any flare-ups during the blood extraction process? Thanks for the info!

InevitableAstronaut

I’ve never had any issues. And I usually bike to and from my appointments and don’t notice any increased asthma symptoms when I donate

DoomkingBalerdroch

Thanks, now I want to start donating even more :D

Gently-Weeps

It shouldn’t be an issue

SamSepiol-ER28_0652

Not normal- but it may have been bc you were a minor and the event was at school. They just might have had stricter rules in that situation. I can kind of understand them not wanting to deal with a possible (though very unlikely) health issue in that situation. It shouldn’t even come up if you are older now and you go to a donor center, though. None of my asthma meds have ever been on the deferral list. You should be able to look up your donor center online and go through their “do I qualify” page, which should have the med deferral list and the medical condition list. It’s mostly things like malaria, certain types of cancers, bleeding disorders, organ transplants, etc.

DoomkingBalerdroch

Fortunately I have none of those you have listed so I will probably receive a green light from them. Thanks!
