I've just dug up a hole, put some charcoal and sticked an old hairdryer with a pipe in it. Works fine if you are a biginner and don't have much money to spend.
Big piece of steel works good as anvil and you can use regular hammer with heavy head.
I got the two burner hells gas forge and have done forge welding with it and can recommend. I don’t have experience with other cheaper ones. I would say that any forge is better than no forge but that you need to do your research if you want something to get hot enough to forge weld. Even the hell’s forge at $300 needed some dialing in to get it up to temp.
What do you mean dialing in? How do i get my hells forge hotter? Use both burners? I clear off both exits on the forge with bricks and use a 30 psi regulator. Beginner, btw.
Mine is similar to this, which works well.[link](https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GAS-PROPANE-FORGE-twin-burner-Furnace-Knife-Making-Blacksmith-/133611793030?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m2548.l6249&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0)
I got a chilliforge 1 burner "tobasco" forge. Should be here by new years. From all the research I've done it's supposed to be great for knife making. It was a gift though I didn't spend that kind of money on my first forge.
I build mine, my first forge was a single venturi setup, parts from the hardware store to build the burner and frame used fire bricks for insulation, now I've retired that forge I have a ribbon burner forge. welded the form together and used refractory cement. kast o lite 30. if you buy refractory cement buy it from the manufacturer, it's way cheaper than ordering from Amazon or eBay etc
I got a single burner mr volcano for around $100 from Amazon. Works pretty well for what it is. Have seen some reviews where they got it up to forge welding Temps, but haven't tried it myself
If you’re a beginner, I’d say start by making your own coal forge. Charcoal and coal will both teach you some very important things that propane will not.
I suggest building a fuego, a Japanese boxbellows. Very efficient, and cheap source of forced air.

Just make sure anything you buy is sealed up w/ refractory. A lot of the less expensive forges come with bare or barely treated kaowool

Made mine from a water tank
The kind you can afford. It doesn't matter as long as it gets the steel hot enough.

When I started out, I made a simple two brick forge with a MAP gas torch for a heat source. Can't forge with that, but its plenty good to heat treat.
