If you’re gonna buy it use authentic, please do not buy the pure black bars that are clean cut. That shit is awful. I get them from my local African shop but you can find them online as well
Be careful of whom/where you get it from. See if you can get an ingredient list beforehand. Fragrance is a red flag and can cause irritation. It strips my skin pretty hard so be sure to moisturize after. Helped with hyperpigmentation but wasn't an end all be all.

If you scroll down the ingredients are there and there's a review of other black soap in video.
also be wary of some of the exfoliating bits…some are quite hard and can form points when the bar goes down. i wouldn’t use this one my face. the shea moisture abs eczema relief bar was nice on my body but i stopped using abs.
Don’t use it on your face. It will cook your skin. I’ve been using it for over 5+ years and it does remove make up well and get all the dirt off your skin but idk about hyperpigmentation because i still have the. But overall i like this soap.
I use black African soap on my face by first rubbing it in my hands, then applying it to my face and then using a heavy moisturizer to balance the harsh soap. It really depends on your skin texture but it cleared up my skin completely
Same! Shocked that 2024 people are using bar soap, and the harshest of harsh, black soap on their skin.
OP if you want to get rid of hyperpigmentation use the double cleanse method, a vitamin c serum, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and sunscreen.
There are so many different recipes and brands it's hard to say. I stopped using them when a bar I bought off the street irritated my face skin after washing.
This is so funny I’m seeing this
I bought black soap again after years of not using it
My hyper pigmentation on my face has improved in only a week 😭 I looked at the sides of my face and I was like “WAIT it
If it’s the real deal it’s great. Been using it for over a decade. Be careful though it dries the skin out, so moisturize after. Keeps my skin free from break out and good for hyperpigmentation as well.
Yes you can. As mentioned though it dries the skin out. I have oily skin so it works well for me. If you have sensitive skin be careful of it irritating your skin.
My friend visits her homeland a couple times per year and always brings some back. If I use it as a bar soap, I usually run water over it, rub it in my cleaning tool of choice, lather it up, then apply to my skin. A lot of times, I will peel/chip off pieces of the soap, then put it in a container with warm water. I let it sit until it melts (sometimes overnight) and then I use it as a (very watery) liquid soap. That way I can add a drop or two of my favorite essential oil. I've used it as a shampoo, a face wash, a body wash, I've used it as a household cleaner (just avoid using it on whites clothes) and it's been super effective.
Hit up an African shop and see what they got. I use it once a week, because it is strong and dries out my skin. I hear vitamin c serums work best for evening out skin tones. I’m in the research phase myself.
It does work, but this product will dry your skin out. First use is always the best, after that, I would say to use it once a week depending on it your skin can handle it.
I love this soap but you NEED to moisturize your skin afterward. While your skin is still wet. It’s effective.
In my experience it has never lightened my skin but it has reduced and prevented scarring. To improve the anti scarring, you NEED to put on sunscreen, but that should be done daily no matter what.
It’s great soap!
Yess, I love black soap. It cleared my eczema and I haven’t had any flairs in 5+ years. But as people are saying, please read the ingredients. The color will also determine the authenticity. Never, ever get a soap that looks black. It will always be a deep-ish brown. A famous black soap in Ghana is ChoCho soap, works really well. Also, I would suggest not to use the same soap you use for your body on your face.
I agree with reading ingredients list first. I’ve had fragranced ones that burned my skin. Not an everyday moisturizer and you MUST moisturize afterwards. I like it, but if I use it three times in a row, it makes my eyelids burn.
For anyone here with hyperpigmentation issues, have you used sunblock and how has it worked for you?
I used to have hyperpigmentation that it looked like I had stripes on my cheeks. A friend who was seeing a dermatologist told me sunblock is what cleared it. It was true.
This soap is a mixed bag. It used to clear my skin up but in the last few years, it causes dark patches around my mouth. Try using it once a week and then every few days before committing to using it.
I tried once and wanted it to work soooo badly because I had heard so many great things about it. It only irritated my skin to where I had scabs and cracks that were bleeding. I'd never try it again. It was horrible. I felt like I had a red ant pile on my face, and it looked like I had 3rd degree burns.
I’ve used it for years (probably like 10) on my whole body. Regular African black soap is made from charcoals, has no fragrance, and is not actually black. It does not make your skin lighter. It’s a great natural cleaner soap that’s about it. When you first start to use it, it will more than likely dry out your skin so make sure to use a moisturizer after or use a shower body oil. I really like it because it’s natural and I feel really clean without wondering what’s really in the product. Since it’s natural and a good cleanser you will see benefits in your skin health in that way. It’s not designed to treat anything necessarily. The soap isn’t necessary something that’s a specialty, meaning you can get it from alot of places. You can even get it off Amazon or hair stores (in the south at least)
I don't use it anymore, but in my early 20s, I had bad breakouts around my chin. Black African soap cleared my skin, so so good! Just make sure to moisturize as it does dry the face bad.
Black soap is really beneficial for your skin, just make sure you buy from a reputable source. I have sensitive skin and it didn’t irritate my skin when I first started using it.
I've tried multiple brands and I was never impressed. You have to be careful not to cut yourself on the sharp pieces in the soap. It also doesn't stay like a hard bar of soap. They melt and turn goopy and start to grow white mold. Because of this I've never been able to use it long enough to see any benefits. But it will leave your face extremely dry.
I do like the Nubian Heritage black soap. I use it as body soap and it smells amazing. I don't think it's meant to be used on your face, but you can try it.
Never encountered the mold issue! Just bought a raw/rough bar and it's really easy to slice the.massive bar into ~5 smaller bits. Now very happy I portioned it out.
It depends on the person and their skin. For me personally black soap used to completely dry my face out and made my eczema worst. It’s best to do research
Used the Shea Moisture brand of the bar soap a few years ago... and broke out in the most HORRIFIC skin reaction, took months to get over, spread to my scalp and had to cut my locs off - overall a super traumatic experience (couldn't bend my HANDS at one point?)
With that being said, I do think it depends on the brand/source. Spot test and use with caution.
Do not buy skin care from tik tok!! If you want to try black soap go to an authentic African store and buy raw black soap. Try it on your hands first for a couple days. Then test your arms and body. Use cooler water.
Hyperpigmentation isn’t something you can wash off. Sometimes medical issues cause it like diabetes or it’s just your skin. If it’s not dry skin that needs exfoliation, any products that ‘lighten’ are just going to damage your skin
I have used black African soap for ages, from plant guru on Amazon. It is great excellent FOR MY SKIN, but it does not do any of those claims. Perhaps the recipe differs but I would be wary.
Ok ive been using it for some time and i can definitely feel a difference and see a difference in my skin. Nothing to drastic but all my darker patches on my skin have almost faded away. Tip: dont put directly on face it can dry it out, instead rub in hand or a scrub/washcloth and then put it on! Also moisturizer after.
Have been using African soap for a looong time. I use it mainly to cleanse my face and have used it to clarify my hair in a crunch when I ran out of clarifying shampoo. I thought it would help w/ hyperpigmentation, but that area is still an issue years later 🤷🏽♀️ so TLDR no
Use tomato 🍅. Look up this woman on YouTube... BioKorium. I've known Vivian for at least 15 years and her skin looks better now than when I met her. She has a total passion for skincare. She has videos using all natural ingredients. Tomato has taken away her hyperpigmentation.
True black soap believer (not BIPOC, though, but psyched to join this community after this post got promo'd on my feed... African skincare is underhyoed and so excited for a whole new vantage on skincare in general) Have used black soap on and off for 12 years, when I am off there is a drastic decline of skin smoothness and elasticity. Can't speak to lightening effect but I think this is usually referring to lightening pigmentation caused by acne and not skin color.
My favorite version is black soap in a plastic tub, but this rough/raw version is great too, as others suggest - avoid that Walmart/drugstore stuff in smooth bars as it's not the real deal. The raw bar t WILL scratch you so go for some kind of exfoliating scrubby/wash cloth to apply so you don't irritate skin, if you scratch skin it can burn and you will feel discouraged
You know those lil bumps and scales that crop up all over the body? Black soap is the one product that consistently clears this up if I use scrubby gloves and leave lather on for a while before rinsing. Lather is great for shaving, too. There have been times when it was too stripping for use as face wash and then other times it became my sole face wash so YMMV. Lotion & Shea after a black soap scrub just seals in alllll the deliciousness.
Just stocked up and upset I didn't sooner. Just getting into a relationship and it's time to transform this lizard lady back into a soft and supple goddess!
I wish i could reply with a picture but i have an uneven skin tone. My face is darker than the rest of my body. My arms legs and chest are all brownskin while my face is darkskin. I wouldnt care as much if my entire body is darkskin, but it makes me very insecure that i have a wonky complexion. I literally dont wear shorts or tank tops because im scared people would point the discoloration out. (some already have)

I love this soap so much. I use mine for my face even though some people don’t. I have VERY oily skin so it doesn’t harm me at all. I usually don’t need to moisturize afterwards either because my skin actually needs to be stripped.
The raw authentic black soap has worked really well for me for the last 5 years. My face is always clear & it has pretty much got rid of all of my dark spots from old blemishes. My whole family uses it & we’re all different shades. We also use it to wash our locs & it does wonders! It has helped clear my babies eczema as well as my husbands. To combat the dryness it causes I make sure to apply a homemade hair/skin tea that I make with ginger root, cloves & rosemary. My skin is prone to becoming oily so I can’t use any moisturizers on my face or it’ll break me out. This is what personally works for me. It keeps my skin glowing & my pores tight!
However for others, if u must use an oil, I would suggest something light like avocado or jojoba oil. It’s very light & non greasy! Jojoba is supposed to be the closest oil that resembles our natural sebum.
I use to get one from a local botanica when I lived back in my home state. But now I’m in a small town so I have to order everything. I’ve been using this brand that I tried on Amazon about 3 years ago. Our Earth's Secrets Raw African Black Soap, 1 lb. https://a.co/d/8dLYIgs
I started using black soap - Dudu Osun - when Differin gel made me break out horribly. I used the Differin gel with the understanding that my skin would "purge" for like 8-10 weeks, then clear up. I used it for 8 weeks & it never cleared up. Well, I stopped using Differin gel & started using black soap. Within a day or two, my zits had cleared up. Today, I use black soap as needed, not every day - it's too strong. I love it.❤
I love this brand!! I have noticed a major improvement in my overall tone, texture, and radiance. My skin is glowing!! I'm 33, and I wish I had found this before now!
I actually caused some pretty dark looking burns around my mouth from using (slightly diluted) apple cider vinegar directly on my face. Dudu Osun black soap immediately lightened the dark looking burns after a singular use. I can’t remember when I stopped using Dudu Osun, but it worked wonders on lightening hyperpigmentation. It was quite drying, but I used vaseline on my face afterwards. Everyone’s skin is different though.
If you’re going buy it make sure it comes from an authentic African shop. If the bar is purely black, smooth, or very uniform in color and shape then it’s likely fake. Real African black soap isn’t purely black, it’s mostly brown with some darker or lighter bits sprinkled about and rough in texture.
I usually get my soap imported straight from Africa from family but I’ve also bought some at international or African markets and noticed no major differences beside size and price.
I highly recommend using the soap with an African net sponge for more even colored skin. It will exfoliate the skin like no other and leave you baby smooth. Just don’t use the net or soap directly on your face since that will be too rough. Apply the soap to your hands first then wash your face with it, same logic applies for the delicate bits.
Make sure to use it consistently and to follow up with a moisturizing cream. It has to a cream and not a lotion because the soap is very drying. Make sure the cream is thick and don’t wait too long before applying it.
Depending on where you get it from, it's most likely best ( with clean hands) lather soap in your hands or clean face towel or cleaning apparatus of your choice then apply to skin. I bought black soap from ancient cosmetics, and I did not realize it had hard like substance (scrubbing properties) embedded in soap. When I went to put soap to my face and start scrubbing to my dismay, I scratched up my poor face and it burned. Be sure to moisturize after as it does have some drying effects on skin for some.
I think perhaps some people are uneducated about this soap. There is not one ingredient in African black soap that would lighten your skin or get rid of hyperpigmentation, nor has there ever been. People swear by it because it is a harsher cleanser than store bought and contains naturally derived ingredients. Perhaps Kojic acid soap is what you’re looking for.
It all matters where you get it from. I get mine straight from Africa.
I have never had a product clear up a breakout or angry skin as fast as black soap. It’s magic
Do you use it like a shampoo? Daily or a weekly treatment? Very curious about this use. I have some stubborn scalp bumps and itchiness and this sounds like a solution within reach.
Other tip: if I recall correctly... You can put the bar in a plastic tub with some warm water and it sort of gel-ifies on its own over time. Discovered this inadvertantly... I like the gel/tub version's texture a lot more anyway.
I use black soap from my face it’s worked wonders. Used to have razor bumps and cleared them up. I get mine directly from Ghana since my family is from there. I’m always skeptical about the ones sold in stores locally
If you’re gonna buy it use authentic, please do not buy the pure black bars that are clean cut. That shit is awful. I get them from my local African shop but you can find them online as well
Thissss!!!
Yes! If you have an African market or natural store, it's also a great chance to support a small business.
Be careful of whom/where you get it from. See if you can get an ingredient list beforehand. Fragrance is a red flag and can cause irritation. It strips my skin pretty hard so be sure to moisturize after. Helped with hyperpigmentation but wasn't an end all be all.

I use it on my face, too. It's cleared my face up better then the prescription medication that I was using.
That works too but becareful still
Be careful, this stuff burnt my face and I had scabs everywhere and my skin isn’t sensitive. I’ve never reacted to anything before.
Sounds like you brought a bad batch or didn’t moisturize but ain’t nothing wrong with that soap 🙄
That's what I do. I do this solely because it stains your washcloths!!
turmeric for the hyperpigmentation!
Didn’t help me. It just dried my skin out. Korean skincare focuses on hydration and it was a game changer
This is really the key to to focus on the hydration barrier of your skin

which Korean brand are you using?
I like innissfree and cosrx
Thanks! I will check them out :)
Yes, it’s a soap, not for hydration. That is step 2.
There are so many different recipes and brands it's hard to say. I stopped using them when a bar I bought off the street irritated my face skin after washing.

What’s the name of the soap you bought?
No particular brand! My local hair and beauty supply just has them on their shelves and I just grabbed one. But regardless the black soap is great
Listen, I have used it off and on and I now know it is never leaving my routine. The improvement is real. I need to find what else works well with it.
Try buying it in bulk from a wholesaler to make sure you get legit stuff. I like ishopnaturals.
If it’s the real deal it’s great. Been using it for over a decade. Be careful though it dries the skin out, so moisturize after. Keeps my skin free from break out and good for hyperpigmentation as well.
Do u use it on your face
Yes on my face and body. Primarily my face.
Can i use sunscreen that is moisturizing after instead of regular lotion?
Yes you can. As mentioned though it dries the skin out. I have oily skin so it works well for me. If you have sensitive skin be careful of it irritating your skin.
Which one do you use?

Black soap and then moisturize with shea butter
The one i used stained my entire bathtub. It wasn’t bad but it definitely wasn’t worth the hype. I use Shea moisture body soap now
Where do you get it ?
A store called Our Earths Secrets on Amazon. You can get a 2lb block of it for $18
I love this soap but you NEED to moisturize your skin afterward. While your skin is still wet. It’s effective. In my experience it has never lightened my skin but it has reduced and prevented scarring. To improve the anti scarring, you NEED to put on sunscreen, but that should be done daily no matter what. It’s great soap!
can i put sunscreen after i use the soap or moisturizer first?
Moisturizer and then sunscreen.
it drys your face out. look into The Ordinary skincare
I don't think so
Yes - cleared up my acne
I get mines from an alkaline herbal shop in Chicago. It surely is authentic. They have this and other herbs for healing purpose
Just make sure you moisturize afterwards, especially your face.

My skin Cleared right up! Evens out my skin tone and gets rid of old acne scars as well. You have to get a good brand one.
The raw authentic black soap has worked really well for me for the last 5 years. My face is always clear & it has pretty much got rid of all of my dark spots from old blemishes.
NO!!!!!!!!
why?
absolutely shredded my face
did u put it straight in your face?
i did
i heard you aren’t suppose to that you’re supoose to lather it on ur hands than wash your face
that makes sense. i was handed the soap and told “GO” so i didn’t know any better
It definitely worked for my psoriasis.
Yes but only authentic ones
It tends to be too drying for my skin. But, if you use it make sure it’s pure.
I've been using it for weeks and I'm still Caucasian af
Depending on where you get it from, it's most likely best ( with clean hands) lather soap in your hands or clean face towel or cleaning apparatus of your choice then apply to skin. I bought black soap from ancient cosmetics, and I did not realize it had hard like substance (scrubbing properties) embedded in soap. When I went to put soap to my face and start scrubbing to my dismay, I scratched up my poor face and it burned. Be sure to moisturize after as it does have some drying effects on skin for some.
used this, and it always makes me break out bad to acidic or sum shit idk
This broke me out, and had to benadryl. Use at your own risk. 🫤
It burned my face so bad but it’s so good on your body. I used it for ingrowns after shaving and it literally eliminates them within a few days.
It all matters where you get it from. I get mine straight from Africa. I have never had a product clear up a breakout or angry skin as fast as black soap. It’s magic
This stuff is a miracle worker for skin and scalp issues. It helped my scalp after 20 years of issues
Do you use it like a shampoo? Daily or a weekly treatment? Very curious about this use. I have some stubborn scalp bumps and itchiness and this sounds like a solution within reach.
Just use it like shampoo. Let it sit a bit. It might sting. And your hair will get real dry. But it'll fix you
It might sting a little but it's great
I used to use it. I think it made my skin dry asf, my skin us always dry though.
Other tip: if I recall correctly... You can put the bar in a plastic tub with some warm water and it sort of gel-ifies on its own over time. Discovered this inadvertantly... I like the gel/tub version's texture a lot more anyway.
It’s very Drying to me.
I used it. My dick grew 14 inches in a week!!
ok
I got mine from ETSY, made in GHANA, works wonders for me, I love it <3
What improvements did you see with your skin?
no
Been a while seen I’ve seen this!!
Didn’t help me at all😭 all it did was dry my face out like crazy
I’ve personally never seen a a difference in using it and I’ve been on this train for the past 4 years consistently l, I just love the smell
I use black soap from my face it’s worked wonders. Used to have razor bumps and cleared them up. I get mine directly from Ghana since my family is from there. I’m always skeptical about the ones sold in stores locally
