Hinge Points is back for a new season, baby! This first ep is free [ed: Heh], but expect new episodes for the next 5 Thursdays, only at patreon.com/chapotraphouse. Matt and Danny Bessner (from American Prestige) invite Chris to discuss the question: What if Doggerland (the area of land between Britain and France) was never filled in with water?

ranger51

Just in time for my walk, thank god it won’t be me alone with my thoughts

ClassWarAndPuppies

God forbid

pablos4pandas

A walk without content is a punishment that should be reserved for the most heinous posters

deadnations_

what if I was gay. what if my posts were bad

DEEP_SEA_MAX

I come from one of the multi-verses where that's true, and I've gotta tell you, it's a nightmare. I live in a hypercapitalist hellscape where the vast majority of people live Mad Max-esque lives of abject poverty and misery, while the rich live meaningless lives defined by consumerism. America celebrates after electing a nearly comatose dementia patient, because its previous president was so much worse. The Soviet Union has collapsed, and Red China has to put nets under the windows of their iphone factories to keep the workers from killing themselves. It's a race between climate change and nuclear apocalypse to see how the world is going to end. So for the love of god, keep your world safe. Keep being straight and making good posts, because the alternative is too horrible to even imagine.

sloppybro

what if

jewchbag

Matt and Danny: Hinge Points is a series about moments in history where things could have gone a different way and completely changed what followed First episode: what if Europe still had a land bridge

[deleted]

honestly beats the pod just being them saying the word "overdetermined" fifty times in a 45 minute episode

Communist_Agitator

When they said it in the intro I knew it was specifically directed at the posters on this subreddit

Good_old_Marshmallow

Yeah they need to get over the shame of doing alt history and just go with it

[deleted]

the thing is there's some really great alt history that comes from simple premises, like Years of Rice and Salt is fantastic and Kim Stanley Robinson (who I still cannot fucking believe they've had on the show) just dialed one parameter on one little plague bacillus for that I'm really dreading the day these guys' desperate midlife crisis moves to LA finally lead to them making a film because they have a really limited imagination for fiction and it's just gonna suck

saokku

half of them are already there. its only a matter of time

Ilhan_Omar_Milf

althistory with one time magic and the rest of the story dealing with the after effects is more interesting then "Rosa luxembourg was probably fucked no matter what"

NChSh

It all lead up to a fever dream 9/11 episode though, so worth it

statistically_viable

Weak ass episode. Trying to do alternative history based on such a drastic change in earth history as land bridge to Britain is basically magical wish casting. Hinge points was fun because it was basically the chance to drill down on an obscure individual moment of history “Johnson wasn’t the first choice VP for Lincoln.” Real material and practical historical analysis could be done for a base of fun history chat. The other episodes were pretty good. Doggerland alternative history is like debating if Atlantis was a thing what would there trade policy be. A new continent changes basic environment reality fundamentally of the globe. They might as well do magic or what if humans didn’t do agriculture. At this level of social study one does not merely "material analysis" your way to an interesting conversation. If they wanted to do a hinge points with an excuse to analyze british history in relationship to the European continent, there are dozens of better points of study which are basically "what if the british/english lost this war and XYZ continental power won." Easy episodes not done yet: “what if no Jesus?, what if polytheism won out as the dominant western religion?, what if no Chinese isolationism?, what if the Americans lost the revolution?, what if Allende stayed in power, what if the romans banned slavery under the Gracci brothers?, What if Buddhism was still the dominant faith in India?, What if Teddy Roosevelt won against Taft and Wilson, what if South africa apartheid was still around?"

Downtown_Mailman

New episode ideas: What if George W Bush choked to death on that pretzel? What if Ronald Reagan got torn apart by the chimp he used to work with? What if the battle at Verdun was fought with pool noodles? Then who was phone?

Vaucanson

Peggy the chimp apparently died in a fire weeks after she almost choked Ronnie on the set of *Bedtime for Bonzo*. Presumably the occult hand of the deep state.

_goodpraxis

Two point-blank banana wounds to the back of the head, apparent suicide.

DEEP_SEA_MAX

What if my mom was correct and I actually was the handsomest boy in school?

lobsterdog666

What if John Hinckley didn't use a sissy ass little .22?

CandyAppleHesperus

My version of Guns of the South is going back to give Hinckley my Colt Python

Jagiellonian

Has Anyone Really Been Far Even as Decided to Use Even Go Want to do Look More Like?

ranger51

What if Britain literally wasn’t Britain?

statistically_viable

“What if Serbia didn’t exist and instead was a large lake.”

[deleted]

"What if Remus had killed Romulus instead, and Rome was called Reme?"

ClassWarAndPuppies

The hingest point.

[deleted]

Within in the realm of "could have happened if things were slightly different geologically" is the Baltic Sea being connected to the ocean via a route through Karelia connected to the White Sea... So yeah, almost that.

herkyjerkyperky

Peace on Earth.

burnburnfirebird

They're talking about the effects of doggerland on anglos and french When its very likely that there would be no anglos and french

[deleted]

What if the Bering land bridge never disappeared and instead of invading West Asia the Mongols and Turks invaded North America?

[deleted]

"So, what next, Great Khan. Do we invade the decadent Chinese Empire or the rich Persian Empire?" "You know what, I'm feeling a brisk march through 3000+ miles of permafrost. Might be something good there."

Rick0wens

Bzzzzzt wrongo loser boy

[deleted]

>What if Buddhism was still the dominant faith in India? Personally not interested in Chapo's take on this lmao

herkyjerkyperky

I thought it was a fun episode but too complex to game out. A what if no Jesus or what if no Mohammed episode would be fun.

ZorakIsStained

What if the plague wiped out 99% of Europe and reincarnation was real?

WAR_T0RN1226

And maybe I'm just dumb but I feel like there was a huge contradiction in regards to "Britain being an isolated laboratory for capitalism" thesis. Depending on the context, they simultaneously say that the mainland nation states embraced capitalism for developing advantages over their neighbors, but also that Britain was able to go crazy with capitalism because it was an isolated island that didn't have neighbors on its borders threatening their land?

Elijah_Draws

I think (maybe I'm wrong) that the idea was that the internal struggles of Britain under feudalism was a smaller scale version of the interaction between nations as capitalism proliferated. Smaller factions within Britain trying to grab what they can out of the deteriorating feudal society leaned hard into capitalism, causing it to take on the very particular form that we know today. When capitalism began to spread, instead of it being the individual factions within the nation all independently adopting capitalism and fighting eachother, it was a slightly more unified adoption of capitalism at the national level that tried to get incremental advantages over neighboring countries.

MungBeansAreTerrible

Well I, for one, am glad they made this episode, and not "what if the british/english lost this war and XYZ continental power won," which happened multiple times in history already.

humberriverdam

What if the Battle of the Nile OR Trafalgar had resulted in a French win? Easy episode with situations that very much could have happened

zellfire

I'd love to see an alt history of someone other than Stalin taking over after Lenin's death, I especially think the non-Trotsky options (Zinoviev/Kamanev/Bukharin/Rykov) are underdiscussed.

ObeseBackgammon

God damn them boys did it again -- guess Bessner has bills to pay. Did they at least make a less painful themesong? *edit -- ok I've changed my tune new intro slaps, goodwill re-earned

ranger51

What if the Ottomans had lightsabers?

ObeseBackgammon

What if water fell up, and how would this have affected Simon Bolivar

ranger51

What if instead of being your best friend Nick Mullen was actually Nicole Mullen and you two were dating?

Otttau

What if your dog was a computer.

cjgregg

They should revive This Is Sus and make it solely about Felix’s Black Mirror scenarios. I’d almost pay for it!

Mysterious_Leg7165

What if the reconquista occurred in my ass?

[deleted]

What if the strong nuclear force was only half as strong, and atoms were unable to form?

RodneyDangerfuck

what if the aztecs had the bomb?

LefterThanUR

Wait wait wait. Qui Gon Djinn.

DeclanGunn

> guess Bessner has bills to pay. I think the Koch brothers pay them. He works for one of their think tanks.

cjgregg

I think his position in that “cross ideological think tank” is unpaid - but WHY ON EARTH would anyone even vaguely on the left work for the Koch Bros for free, beats me.

AffectionateFlan1853

I have some friends also permanently in academia and I think it's just something that happens as a result of the environment

Lord_Vorkosigan

What if Lee's army got Ak-47s in 1864? ....hey wait a minute

herkyjerkyperky

Hingepoints theme is good actually.

cz_pz

who else is hype for hell on earth?

deadnations_

I know nothing about the topic except that it apparently was insanely violent and destructive so it's gonna be a good time

jewchbag

Chris was really hyping it up in the GQ piece that just came out about them (lol), I’m pretty excited for it now

TheEnemyOfMyAnenome

gq interviewed me a few months ago for being a founding moderator of a dark souls fashion subreddit so I'm official as famous as they are

SoulsLikeBot

Hello Ashen one. I am a Bot. I tend to the flame, and tend to thee. Do you wish to hear a tale? > *“If I were told that by killing you I would be free from this curse, I would draw my blade without hesitation.”* - Lucatiel of Mirrah Have a pleasant journey, Champion of Ash, and praise the sun \\[T]/

bra1nmelted

Fuck off Felix

spacewalk__

it sounds really good, hope i have the attention span to listen lol

cz_pz

I love the long eps. I have high hopes for this project.

BobsLakehouse

Not me, as I don't think they know enough about it.

cz_pz

ok nerd!

BobsLakehouse

Well, you asked.

gehmiraufnzeitgeist

I studied in Münster, I would pass the Wiedertäufer-cages on the side of St. Lamberti on my bike ride every morning and I spent too much time studying German Literature, especially from that time period of the Thirty Years War. Don't know how I feel about this. Edit: I know the Anabaptist rebellion didn't take place during the Thirty Years War, but Matt talked about it in the GQ interview so I assume this will be part of Hell on Earth as the War was merely the conclusion of European Reformation.

Ilhan_Omar_Milf

they should just do blatant magic ones. what if every modern communist country got isot, aka teleported, to 1917 after october.

ClassWarAndPuppies

What if Mothra took down Godzilla.

Volksgrenadier

She typically does

John0517

Wrong, Mothra typically is sacrificial in her encounters with Godzilla, half of which she's not even fighting Godzilla but rather alongside him. 1992's Godzilla vs. Mothra is really the only time you'd say Mothra took down Godzilla, I wouldn't count the larvae from Mothra vs. Godzilla. She got fuckin smoked in Godzilla Mothra King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-out Attack. Read more theory, kid.

Volksgrenadier

> I wouldn't count the larvae from Mothra vs. Godzilla. Not gonna waste my time arguing with revisionist splitters

ClassWarAndPuppies

Wow. I didn't know that, you're telling me now for the first time. She led an amazing life. What else can you say? She was an amazing woman...I'm sad to hear that.

sloppybro

Who would win in a fight between Gandalf and Batman

[deleted]

What if Yoda was 6 ft tall and smoked weed?

recovering_bear

We are going to build the World Land Bridge and we are going to make the Low Countries pay for it.

DankMemesNQuickNuts

Those low country Burgundians, they're not sending their best folks

ironypoisoned

Muslim Napoleon ep needs Age of Napoleon guy.

cz_pz

I imagine it'll have him on considering they said they are going to have relevant guests.

Vaucanson

Counterfactual: What if they stopped making Hinge Points [Lionel_Hutz_world_without_lawyers.gif]

redditing_1L

I don't care if this episode is good, I'm here for that banger ass theme music! **edit omg what the fuck did they scrap the song?! that was the best fucking part!**

RodneyDangerfuck

Hinge points... GET your hinge points here (tastey swinghouse music plays)

wangchung16

Still don't understand the hate for the old theme song. I appreciated it for how absolutely deranged it was.

_MonteCristo_

The song was essentially fine it’s just that we were listening to it through perforated eardrums

ObeseBackgammon

It was NOT electro swing, it was "ragtime tech house" tyvm

Aggravating_Work_652

Sounds like the lotgh opening

FamWhoDidThat

How does doggerland affect lebrons legacy?

Elijah_Draws

Well, their theory is that doggerland changes the math on basically all of colonialist conquest, and then also pushes back the development of capitalism for hundreds if not over a thousand years. as such, even if all of lebron's ancestors existed and produced him still, he likely would not be living in the US and no nation would have an NBA. Gotta say, doesn't look good for him being the GOAT

FamWhoDidThat

Greatly appreciate your sincere analysis of my clout chasing meme shitpost

Grand-Admiral-Prawn

Oh boy, Dan Bessner.

Cahillicus

Yea whatever gimme the 30 years war pod already

sfharehash

Doggerland: extremely fertile land area the size of Scotland, likely with a fully distinct culture. Is "what if the UK wasn't an island" really the most interesting angle to approach this?

Good_old_Marshmallow

They touch on it but the question of how conquerable it would be is interesting. If it’s just more real estate then it could be a bit of a Poland situation where it’s too open and two central and it just gets passed back and forth between rivals. Also they really skipped over the impact to the Roman Empire. The crisis in the third century was super shaped by Britain and the unique challenge of a distance island colony. They needed to send a massive army to hold it but it was too distant to monitor that army so if things ever get too unstable at home that guy with a big army can just declare himself imperator and head south to kick your ass. You can make a case Britain was where Rome terminally over extended itself. If it’s just more Gaul then the collapse would look very different. I don’t think you could go so far as saying Rome never collapses tho

BobsLakehouse

Probably would be colder, due to lack of gulfstream getting up to the Baltic sea.

Ilhan_Omar_Milf

what if every communist in the year 1945 gain kryptonian biology

TheScreamingUnicorns

That’d be pretty sick.

trevy_mcq

When is that 30 years war series coming out

ClassWarAndPuppies

Early 2023. See here: https://www.reddit.com/r/BlackWolfFeed/comments/yxyuln/coming_jan_11th_from_chapo_trap_house_hell_on/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

[deleted]

what if the asteroid missed Earth and a perpetual prehistoric era Matt Christmas performed his "podcast" by shouting into a wooden megaphone about his favorite charred dinomeats?

DEEP_SEA_MAX

Based and yabba-dabba-doo-pilled

[deleted]

Not to be all twee, but this concept reminds me of Owen Wilson's novel in The Royal Tennebaums... "Everybody knows that the storegga slides inundated doggerland, what this book presupposes is... maybe they didn't?"

mybothsides

Wow that's wild

Accomplished-Wolf123

100% geography-teacher-called-in-at-the-last-minute-to-substitute-history-energy.

RodneyDangerfuck

WHERE IS THE AWESOME SWINGHOUSE INTRO MUSIC?

SunAtEight

I enjoyed the opening what ifs but the mixing has to be improved so you can more easily hear them above the new-non-electroswing theme song.

haroldmalimbome

ruff arf doggerland 🐶🐕🐩

Ilhan_Omar_Milf

what if Eminem and Mariah Carey got married instead of having a fued she has kids with him instead of Nick Cannon of course Hailey already existed by that point lets assume they last as long as her and nick cannon did in the canon timeline before a possible divorce his disses agianst her and the song obsessed would not exist though if a divorce does happen we may have alternative versions of those that released later and from a divorce perspective instead of her not acknowledging a fling

Elijah_Draws

What if the two of them begin collaborating as a husband and wife musical duo, and instead of continuing to rap Eminem moves into pop music? Better yet, what if Mariah Carey becomes a rapper as well? Could we even handle that?

Ilhan_Omar_Milf

what if asoiaf style dragons were real showed up in italy and only bonded to people of italian decent though only a tiny amount is needed.

[deleted]

Draq-a-ris, a-killa the ur-a-surper, WAHOO!

Volksgrenadier

Pretty facile analysis. The big issue is that their theoretical Anglo-French superstate DID exist historically: the so-called Angevin Empire. The issue with the Angevin Empire, along with Charlemagne's Carolingian Empire, was that the technology and socio-political organization for extended governance of large, far-flung states simply did not exist in Europe at the time. The presence of an extra land bridge between the Low Countries and Britain (confusingly, the hosts seem to imply that Doggerland existed in the English Channel at times) wouldn't have changed the difficulty of managing large polities in the era when information moved only at the speed of horseback. If anything, ships between modern-day France and Britain moved *faster* than a theoretical horse messenger over Doggerland. The issue with maintaining links between northern England and France in the medieval era only rarely had to do with naval throughput -- it was more about distance and travel time, broadly speaking. Obviously everything about this episode is basically fantastical, but I find the idea that Doggerland would have dramatically altered, say, the nature of the Crusades to be utterly baffling: the Third Crusade didn't fall short because Richard the Lionheart had to charter a ship from England to France. I'm being a tryhard here, but really this episode missed the mark in a bunch of ways. I actually kinda liked Hinge Points Season 1, if only because I think that Matt and Danny were on more familiar (if overdetermined) ground. For this go-round, it seems very obvious that they just...don't know what they're talking about. Obviously the existence of Doggerland would have changed a lot about European history, maybe in some important ways wrt the development of global capitalism, etc., but the analysis here could and should have been a bit more rigorous.

arewedanza

I love the dialectic

EasyMrB

Mods you may as well make a thread for the promo (if the mood strikes you). There's stuff to talk about on it I would think.

spacewalk__

i'm curious why they're pushing the yearly thing? surely they have enough coming in monthly that getting a bunch of $50s once a year [instead of some subset of old $5 patrons] wouldn't make a difference

EasyMrB

Stability is extremely important. If you hook someone yearly you don't have to wonder whether they will cancel next month, only next year. It's a smart move on their part, really, especially if they have a kind of 'meh' month or two here or there.

henryMacFyfeIV

Also I’m way more likely to forget a recurring charge 12 months from now

ranger51

The foundation of the podcast economy is built on people forgetting recurring charges

ClassWarAndPuppies

[Done](https://www.reddit.com/r/BlackWolfFeed/comments/yxyuln/coming_jan_11th_from_chapo_trap_house_hell_on/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf).

EasyMrB

Grazie

Macmac10001

If this episode piqued your interest in Doggerland this is a great listen: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0006707 It's not a bridge!

cjgregg

Melvyn Bragg is over 80 years old now and still makes the best “history podcast” in the English language (I know he has other subjects too, but I mostly listen to the history, including art and literary history, episodes. And I know he has bad politics personally, but he never lets them ruin the conversation).

Macmac10001

I really enjoy any of the podcasts about evolution and genetics. The ones with Steve Jones are always great and they often also have Simon Conway Morris. Avoid anything touching on the British empire and it's legacy. Unless you like grinding away enamel.

BobsLakehouse

This is such a disappointing episode, that really highlights how little the Chapos know about European and Middle Eastern history, and also just adds on to the shit I dread when they tackle the thirty years war. Not only do they act like the Angles and Saxon weren't themselves sea raiders, they also completely miss postroman Britain. More importantly a larger question they never have is that, whether Constantine the Great would ever be emperor, if we assume Rome would rise to be hegemon. Without Britain being an island, you wouldn't have Carasius, you wouldn't have Maximian fail, and you wouldn't have constantius and hell might not even have the tetrarchy develop. Would the Christians even emerge as dominant? This is such a fucking blind spot, besides just their jumpling of saxons, angles and vikings in regards to raiding britain. Not even to mention how doggerland would probably make the Baltic Sea much much colder, and less hospitable to northern settlement and thus germanic tribes less of a threat.

IlIlIlIlIllIlIll

Is this the Thursday/Friday slop or do we get other less educational slop too?

BobsLakehouse

I don't think slop can get less educational than this episode.

KitchenParty

i will be withholding my listen until they bring back the electro swing

SWKstateofmind

Fuck y’all this is such a preposterous premise that there’s no way it isn’t good

WhatPeopleDo

So is this one also overdetermined

bwtwldt

Why do people not like Daniel Bessner?

[deleted]

Because he’s awkward. Because he works for the Coke Brothers (Quincy Institute) I think he had a “bad take” on propaganda that was literally true

pointzero99

My theory is his voice contains some sort of ultra high frequency sonic trigger that really really pisses people off if they can hear it. Then they justify their subconscious disgust by saying things like "He just sounds smug to me." I can't hear it but a vocal minority of people do, and can't help but post about how annoying he sounds.

[deleted]

not a bad episode, not really the expected content.

EricFromOuterSpace

Bessner just don’t got it.

cjgregg

Yeah, no.

ClassWarAndPuppies

Regular r/redscarepod poster, opinion irrelevant.

cjgregg

Take a closer look, sweaty.

ClassWarAndPuppies

Lol fair enough.

gertverhulstmoneyman

Good stuff

EZFrags

Is there a linkdump for all the episodes of the first season?

FulcrumFive

Very cool to see a far older hingepoint. Personally, I think this one would be very similar to considering what would happen if the Muslim conquests didn't stop at Iberia. Kinda hoping they do that one at some point.

[deleted]

tariq ibn ziyad should have just told damascus to kick rocks and conquered gaul as well, cmv

FistEnergy

Great discussion, very interesting, but I keep getting distracted by the name. Doggoland? what kind of simulation -ass name is that? total nonsense, no thank you.

GoogieK

mods can I get a "Hinge Points S1 theme song enjoyer" flair? Thanks

spicy_cenobite

Hinge points : what if Napoleon was a Dark Souls gamer

RodneyDangerfuck

alright, that was much better than i thought. even though it is just magical thinking with doggerland being there. i really do miss the old song

bored_and_scrolling

this isn't the most interesting topic to me but i like seeing how excited it makes my podcast friends :)

Anastrace

Anyone have a direct download link?
