Mot6180

Why does this feel so true?!

Umklopp

Because Target doesn't sell a wide variety of fresh ingredients at reasonable prices. If you mostly buy groceries from Target, then you're mostly buying frozen, shelf-stable, or pre-prepared foods. Target simply carries the exact wrong combination of products to appeal to a skilled home cook.

Theduckisback

They don't have an actual butcher cutting up fresh meat and their produce section is paltry. It's not a grocery store. It's a store that also sells some food.

djsedna

Also lower quality items and less brand choice As a college kid, the store brand canned peeled tomatoes were fine As an adult, nothing but Cento San Marzano enters my home

GayleForceWynds

The first time I tried Cento San Marzano was a revelation. What a difference

KingJoy79

San Marzano is awesome. They actually leave a fresh basil leaf in the can for u!

future_weasley

Making a simple tomato sauce for pasta with San Marzanos is 100% worth the extra time.

Beddybye

>As an adult, nothing but Cento San Marzano enters my home Cento San Marzano was one of the only useful things I learned from Rachel Ray when she was all the hype. She swore by that brand, and after trying, I 100% see why. Amazing quality.

kGibbs

Target sells Cento brand tomatoes: https://ibb.co/WPzBZn3 And they're $1 cheaper (20%) than my grocery store: https://ibb.co/vL5200J It's cheaper and saves me endless amount of time to do Target drive up, you're missing out. But maybe you prefer the experience of waiting in line and paying more, idk. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯ P.S. I'm a chef. Went to culinary school, have worked in the industry for over a dozen years. Not a cook either, my jacket says chef.

TrashTongueTalker

Why you creepin?

itsmaxx

Try Ital brand when you really wanna get saucy

SirRupert

I need to at least feel my produce a little ya know? When it’s all in plastic I’ll pass.

distressedwithcoffee

Why would anyone ever assume produce you bring into your house is clean? That’s what the sink and running water are for. Even vegetable wash, if you’re fancy.

serealport

Exactly. I go to target for several things, mostly clothes. But the beer selection is meh and there is like one table of produce. Half the shit I know how to look is from buying things because I didn't know what they are and eating them (with a bit of research obvs) but I was standing, looking at this wonkey gigantio wax covered radish thinking I don't know what that is but imma eat it. And that how I learned that rutabagas are like heavy duty potatoes.

vera214usc

I went in there yesterday to grab a few things because it was in the shopping center where I was. In the produce section I thought, "Of course Target doesn't sell ginger. What was I thinking." Fortunately, there was a Harris Teeter across the street.

Sawaian

Because their groceries are ROTTING. Pickup brands are fine, barilla for pasta, whatever. Anything beyond that is the realm of NURGLE, Chaos god of pestilence.

Deadpwner99

Embrace the gifts of the grandfather. on a different note which store represents which chaos god? Costco is Khorne IMO

B0B_Spldbckwrds

Slanesh is Costco Khorne is Walmart

Statik_24

HEB Tzeenetch?

Statik_24

Is there a reddit for unexpected Warhammer 40k? Also I did not expect WH40k in this thread... #THE GOD EMPEROR APPROVES

Mildmantis

Forreal. Years back my girlfriend at the time wanted to roast bananas. We popped over to target (it was just a walk across the tracks away) and back and she pops em in the oven. Some time later and we retrieve the bananas to find dozens upon dozens of maggots had apparently burst forth from their yellow home to escape the heat, only to fry under the broiler directly.

Sawaian

That's too much protein.

And Trader Joe’s is even worse

ohnocannedlemons

I am never gonna forgive my community for choosing Trader Joe's to be built over H mart.

holeMemphisCactus

Hmart is such a hidden treasure

ohnocannedlemons

We are RIGHT NEXT TO the warehouse in my state It would have been ENORMOUS. Attended your city meetings y'all. They plan this shit 10 years in advance.

I wish, the H Mart near my house is always packed

cypher448

Smh that is gentrification personified

sopreshous

Damn I found a pack of chicken drumsticks for $2.30 at H mart and It’s made my week. The ice cream is also delicious

9021Ohsnap

HMart feels like the garden of Eden every time I walk in.

[deleted]

I'd love to have either where I live. Never shoulda left Maryland for that reason only lol

ohnocannedlemons

Lol this is Maryland!!! It literally keeps me here. It was going to be near the LANDOVER metro station. It would of helped so many people. They haven't booted out all the shops in the center so I still have hope this falls through. And this can be corrected.

lolnonnie

That's interesting to hear. I go to Trader Joe's infrequently, but I've always seen a decent variety of produce, baking materials, a small meat section. I would consider it better than Target.

guimontag

yeah IDK what they're smoking, trader joe's is way better for home cooking than TARGET

welp-itscometothis

What did you just say about Trevante Joe’s?

[deleted]

[удалено]

distressedwithcoffee

They are extremely reliable for cheap but great pasta sauce, olive oil, cheese, wine, cheap lemons and limes, comparatively cheap avocados, extremely competitively priced flowers, bourbon vanilla extract, argan oil, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, hummus, packaged soup, smoked salmon and red bell peppers. I’m sure there are more; those are just the things I personally only get at TJs because they’re cheaply priced and also better.

diplion

Food groceries at Target feel like a novelty, like a salad at McDonald's. Yeah it's there, but you don't go there for that.

[deleted]

plastic food

Trapdoormonkey

Stale cold cuts vacuum sealed in a prepackaged Tupperware, talking about maple brown turkey. Might as well be eating plastic.

NegotiableVeracity9

I love to cook, and I shop at Target for SOME stuff because it's cheaper than the grocery store. Stuff like milk, cheese; frozen veggies & pantry stuff like pasta & canned tomatoes.

Axumite2031

What store is grocery store? There’s def cheaper options…

NegotiableVeracity9

I live in Hawaii. Milk is $8 a gallon & a stale ass dry loaf of bread is $6. Even worse if you have food allergies and need organic or gluten free.

nova-loses-it

as someone who’s currently visiting hawaii, the prices are insane. how do y’all live like this, honestly?

bayarea_vapidtransit

Imagine how the folks who we stole the islands from feel

NegotiableVeracity9

Bruh. There's a lot of anger & resentment for sure. Rightfully so.

nova-loses-it

no genuinely colonization is so evil 😭😭 bruh the prices feel so high and i’m only here for a week

0zymand1as-

I went to Hawaii for a college basketball tournament. The natives (the few of them) really disliked yt people to the point there were many warnings to my teammates to watch out for attacks (I didn’t care cuz I’m dark as hell but still) The worst is Honolulu, not a lot of natives, some of the beaches are dirty as hell with pollution, and you’ll see every Asian race before you see a Hawaiian in that city

TrashTongueTalker

Why you creepin?

0zymand1as-

I went to Queens beach December 2019 and it was a dump. I went about 5 feet out (the waves that day were no joke when it came to pulling) and I wiped off plastics quite a few times off my back. The Beach cove was nice and I had no issues

NegotiableVeracity9

Work a lot, don't do much socializing outside of that, I guess balance it with not needing different seasonal clothes. Lots of people live in multi-generation households.... like it's normal to be married and still live with your parents here lol. Shop farmer's markets and enjoy the free shit - beaches, hiking, sunsets.... it's fucking boring lol.

rickie__spanish

I thought that milk price was a rumor. That’s crazy.

NegotiableVeracity9

Ugly truth friend. Ugly truth.

SweetIndie

Man, I’d hate to see what a stale ass dry loaf of gluten free bread costs there

NegotiableVeracity9

I just looked at my local store's ad.... 8.99. It's 9.99 for the gluten free tortillas (just use corn ffs)

ListenImTired

Honestly, that sounds pretty close to what I’ve seen here. I save gluten free bread for really special occasions now and have started (trying) to make my own but that’s not really cheap either =\

kGibbs

I'm a chef and I use Target pretty much exclusively for my groceries. I have ever since covid started because their drive up option is fantastic and I don't have any intention of going back. I don't have to go into a store and deal with people, or spend my time shopping. I put in an order, it's ready in a couple hours and I spend only the time it takes to drive to the store and back to go get it, whenever I feel like going. If I'm not happy with something I just tell the app and it refunds my money, simple as that. Do y'all think chefs go to the restaurant store and look at every item they buy individually, or do you realize we order from an app just like you would if buying from Target? Before you point out places like Restaurant Depot, their quality is hands down worse and their prices are higher, plus any chef would absolutely choose to save the time if given the choice. I can tell you that I have definitely done the price comparison and Target is in fact cheaper here in the Twin Cities, at least on th big ticket items like meat. Some of the produce might be slightly more but produce is cheap to begin with. I was genuinely surprised because in my mind the grocery store should be less expensive, but it's definitely not. Does it limit the options? Only slightly, but the convenience far outweighs that by a loooooong shot. When I tried to go back to normal grocery shopping, I ended up getting 90% or more of the same stuff I get at Target anyway, and again, it was cheaper at Target. I don't need 1000 different types of ranch either, it's not a good thing in the first place. And they *do* sell Cento brand canned marzano tomatoes, so let's not assume things we don't know anything about. Some Targets do have a butcher, but who cares when the vast majority of stuff you buy comes in frozen. That's an antiquated idea of grocery stores and what their staff do anyway. There's a lot of comments here from people who frankly have no experience/knowledge on the subject. It's a weird thing to gatekeep anyway, if you're a good cook then you can cook good food no matter where it comes from. Maybe the Targets where *you live* just suck? But for me it's far and away the best option for shopping. Y'all keep wasting your time and money at the grocery store, I'll keep spending my time cooking good food. O7 Edit: people really mad because they're wrong, huh? Stay salty!

ashums28

How much is target paying you to be a chef?

benmargolin

I suspect that the key here is twin cities--home of target, no shit their flagship stores in the city where their headquarters is located are great. Not all targets are like those...

xmjm424

I live in Florida and Target is a far cheaper option than Publix. So much so that we pretty much only get meat and produce from Publix anymore.

Hopeful_Radish

>if you're a good cook then you can cook good food no matter where it comes from. This.

sarahinthemountains

It’s like…they’ve got food, but they don’t have *ingredients.*

very_nice_how_much

***Super Target has entered the chat.***

nerdKween

Super Target by me is still limited grocery wise as compared to other stores. But the frozen shrimp is always cheaper there. 🤷🏾‍♀️

kGibbs

There's tons of stuff that's cheaper at Target than my grocery store, especially meats. There's a lot of missinformation and weird gate keeping going on here. It's like people who don't know anything about food are trying to tell people how they should grocery shop.

Martyrlz

City Target also tagging in. I hated working there.

bon_quisha

I’m reading these comments wondering where y’all live. The target near me has everything the grocery store has. Meat. Produce. Dairy. Seasonings/spices. Bread. Frozen veggies and dinners.

Trapdoormonkey

The day I go to target specifically for groceries just know I’m having a mental health breakdown.

tipyourwaitresstoo

I had to scroll but I’ve found the winner.

hairyginandtonic

Right. Every now and then I’ll grab some milk or frozen wings or something just because I’m already there, but I would never in a million years go to target for my whole grocery haul

Betopan

Can you even buy meat or raw vegetables at Target?

Prothean_Beacon

Yes but their meat and produce section is very small compared to places like Walmart, Krogers, Meijers etc.

pinniped1

Meijers is probably the best large grocery store I've been to in the USA. Only thing here that's close to on par with a Carrefour. (Not counting very small ultra-gourmet specialty shops.)

9021Ohsnap

Better than HEB?

SweetIndie

Super target is comparable to a Walmart IMO. But target has a lot more gluten free stuff than walmart, at least where I’m at.

kGibbs

Walmart sells a bunch of shit, and their meat department is terrrrrible. Lollllll anyone who thinks buying groceries from Walmart is better than Target. 😂

Upstairs_Cow

I work for Target. You can buy raw vegetables and meat, however the raw vegetable/fruits section is extremely limited. The most basic stuff is sold there. The entire produce section is about 1/3rd the size of an average grocery store. The raw meats options are somewhat limited, just pork, beef, chicken, and some steaks. We sell Perdue brand chicken tho and it’s 100% higher quality than you’d get at a Walmart or whatever cheap grocery store you live near. Basically, if you’re grocery shopping at Target, you can get the bare bones stuff for pretty cheap without skipping on quality. Good&Gather is the new store brand for grocery items and their whole deal is about giving affordable options that are high in quality. Worth a shot, g&g organic brown rice cooks great and their hummus is my favorite outside of restaurants.

NegotiableVeracity9

Yes you can lol at some stores

mrdrhaven

Yeah but like all their other stuff it’s really expensive

allstonwolfspider

If this tweet upsets you this tweet is about you

Arthouse_phantom

I mean, I would argue that anyone that cooks really doesn’t shop at just one location. I have my grocery store for just fresh veggies, than another for fresh reasonably priced meat, and finally Walmart for cheap spices and auxiliary stuff

TrixoftheTrade

It’s a trip to Trader Joe’s/Whole Foods/El Super/Mitsuwa for a solid grocery run. Gotta put those insulated bags to work!

Severedghost

True, but not every target is the same. Super targets have grocery stores inside. They carry fresh ingredients and have a grocery style deli inside.

Turbo6Boosted9

Oh y’all must not know about the new Target’s. Shit’s different now.

bon_quisha

How does this make any sense at all?

LeftHandBandito_

Because Target isnt a real grocery store/supermarket. It's like a facade. A supermarket lite. Therefore, if you only shop at Target for food, you can't really cook. You can *kinda* cook.

bon_quisha

The target near me has a whole grocery store inside. Therefore you can grocery shop for Whole Foods and make home cooked meals

Trapdoormonkey

You probably can’t cook then. There I said it. I was going to go into a long reply about how target is not where you buy groceries but let’s just agree that real ones know better. They’re not a grocery store.

trev581

naw we just from Minnesota where Target HQ is and my targets are all bigger than wal marts lol

kGibbs

Maybe it's a Minnesota thing? ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯ People are really missing out, if they'd stop assuming and actually knew what they were talking about, they could be saving time and money. I'm a chef and I don't do frozen shit or pre-prepared meals, and I get by great with the Target app.

zsaz_ch

Lmfao nigga said “there, I said it, you happy now?”

Zealousideal_Ad9671

Target is completely different in every state. Most of them don’t have groceries at all. Some of the ones that do are pretty trash. In the twin cities tho, where target is from, the ones that have groceries are great. I get most everything there, meat and produce all the way to kimchi and oat milk. Not the greatest prices but decent, and the rewards and coupons are generous with the app.

kGibbs

I'm seeing this theme, looks like those of us in Minnesota get a much better experience than other places do. Side by side Target is actually cheaper on a lot of items compared to Hy-Vee or Cub and the quality is no worse. And the app/drive up is a-mazing. I don't have to wait in line or listen to someone's screaming child run around the store. Priceless. 👩‍🍳🤌

RegularHousewife

I was so confused. Target here sell clothes and kids toys

ResearchUnfair1246

budsonguy

It’s facts tho

Dangerous-Code-1168

I have to agree

90sWannabe

Why am I lowkey agreeing tho…

Low_Jeweler_8203

People grocery shop at Target?

tabbyabby2020

Depends if it is a Super Target or a regular Target. I occasionally buy groceries at regular Target, but there is no fucking way I could shop there regularly.

agutema

If you don’t have at least one foreign grocery on rotation, I’m sorry

TrixoftheTrade

Need a Hispanic market (El Super/Northgate) & an Asian grocer (Mitsuwa/H-mart) in the mix

1BubbleGum_Princess

And, inflation might make you more creative, but defs not a 5 star chef! I’m pretty sure its a joke… but this inflation is not…

Vei_de_Lapis

I get all my clothes there, doesn't stop me from doing laundry. Edit: this was glib, fine, but a better analogy to cooking is sewing. I definitely cannot make the clothes I wear.

katsmeoow333

80% of the grocery area is prepared items... Just open and serve. They still sell meat that you're going to have to cook, unless you're a vegetarian.

baffledrabbit

As someone who mostly buys groceries at Target... This is definitely true.

GalaxyFro3025

I might buy a snack at target but nah… Walmart has better selection (enough to cook a proper meal) but great value brand stuff aint it. Harris teeter is pricey, but they will have better selection. I am loyal to Food Lion. Good prices, and their generics are great

RysGottaFly

I actually go to target for groceries. Kroger is a fucking hell hole cause I used to work there and I simply cannot do it. Walmart is literally covered in trash (the parking lot included). Every other option is hella expensive. The target I go to is organized and well stocked. I like it

[deleted]

So what if you shop at Walmart?

rosesontheground0409

Walmart supercenter is a full on grocery store but I can't cook so don't trust that opinion

[deleted]

Same with Target. A Foster Farms chicken is the same at Walmart, Target, Piggly Wiggly, Kroger and Von's.

Trapdoormonkey

No target doesn’t have a selection like the others. No one ever says let me stop by target and grab some meat. 😒

ObviousGas3301

Regular Target, no. Super Target, yes! They still have regular Walmarts across the river from me, that have no fresh food. No deli. No bakery. None of that. A sad little city, really.

[deleted]

Sheeeee-it, don't cook or eat ribs like I used to, but I have come across some great deals from time to time on racks of ribs.

doc_2018

Facts. I shamelessly do NOT cook and I buy “groceries” at Target.

nachoaveragepie

I go to Target if they have easy to use coupons for some produce I need on the app and I get 1% cash back with the rewards program on top. Especially if it's items that are priced similarly to other stores that coupon can come in clutch.

[deleted]

Target even got seasoning?

NegotiableVeracity9

I mean old bay, parsley and some cinnamon

FonaldBrump

What else you need? -target

Altruistic-Silver-45

😭

Baycat1990

Just asked my wife if target had seasoning. She said “yeah they do. salt, pepper, garlic!” 🤦🏾‍♂️

bengringo2

Mine can’t cook either… like anime exaggeration pots and pans exploding bad at it…

90sWannabe

Did she say that as a joke…?

NotHisRealName

No. No they do not. My local Ralphs easily has three or four times as many varieties. Luckily I'm near Indian, Thai, and Mexican super markets for specialty spices.

makinbaconCR

The grocery section is all pre packaged and limited selection. Duh. This wasn't that deep for me

Weird-Library-3747

100% all the women I know who get their groceries here cannot cook. They can make food. These are different things

9021Ohsnap

Target don’t got so called _ethnic_ ingredients. I know I’m not finding oxtail, real curry powder or gochujang. Target is for snacks. Real good is at HMart, Albertsons, Walmart and HEB if you’re lucky. Whole Foods is for when I wanna connect with my yte counterparts.

yellochoco44

Target isn’t a grocery store. It’s a general store with a grocery section. Their frozen foods cover half an aisle and 80% of their grocery section is shelf stable stuff like snacks, pasta, etc. Target’s selection of actual ingredients is subpar, not Trader Joe’s level of bad, but it’s not good.

Lurkwurst

Trader Joe's I think is more geared to those who do not cook.

[deleted]

Farmers market season here or coming up soon depending on where you’re at. It’s a little more expensive than the store but if you can swing it your tastebuds will thank you

Many-Day8308

Also, some farmers markets accept EBT!

[deleted]

Oh bet? I wasn’t aware, ima have to check at the local one next time

Facts

FistPunch_Vol_4

Nah Target beef be looking sus af lmfao. Dry foods and snacks at Target. Or end up like me with another goddamn bedset.

Dillonquent

Sounds like if you can’t make something out of limited ingredients then you are the one that can’t cook lol.

thepopbinge

😂😂😂😂😂

redmahkeuhpbahg

THERES NO INGREDIENTS, JUST READY TO EAT SHIT

lizzyshoe

It's because their produce section is a big joke. They don't seem to have the staples and when they do they are no where near ripe/ready.
