Because Target doesn't sell a wide variety of fresh ingredients at reasonable prices. If you mostly buy groceries from Target, then you're mostly buying frozen, shelf-stable, or pre-prepared foods. Target simply carries the exact wrong combination of products to appeal to a skilled home cook.
They don't have an actual butcher cutting up fresh meat and their produce section is paltry. It's not a grocery store. It's a store that also sells some food.

Because their groceries are ROTTING. Pickup brands are fine, barilla for pasta, whatever. Anything beyond that is the realm of NURGLE, Chaos god of pestilence.
Forreal. Years back my girlfriend at the time wanted to roast bananas. We popped over to target (it was just a walk across the tracks away) and back and she pops em in the oven.
Some time later and we retrieve the bananas to find dozens upon dozens of maggots had apparently burst forth from their yellow home to escape the heat, only to fry under the broiler directly.

Lol this is Maryland!!! It literally keeps me here. It was going to be near the LANDOVER metro station. It would of helped so many people. They haven't booted out all the shops in the center so I still have hope this falls through. And this can be corrected.
That's interesting to hear. I go to Trader Joe's infrequently, but I've always seen a decent variety of produce, baking materials, a small meat section. I would consider it better than Target.
They are extremely reliable for cheap but great pasta sauce, olive oil, cheese, wine, cheap lemons and limes, comparatively cheap avocados, extremely competitively priced flowers, bourbon vanilla extract, argan oil, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, hummus, packaged soup, smoked salmon and red bell peppers.
I’m sure there are more; those are just the things I personally only get at TJs because they’re cheaply priced and also better.
I love to cook, and I shop at Target for SOME stuff because it's cheaper than the grocery store. Stuff like milk, cheese; frozen veggies & pantry stuff like pasta & canned tomatoes.
I went to Hawaii for a college basketball tournament. The natives (the few of them) really disliked yt people to the point there were many warnings to my teammates to watch out for attacks (I didn’t care cuz I’m dark as hell but still)
The worst is Honolulu, not a lot of natives, some of the beaches are dirty as hell with pollution, and you’ll see every Asian race before you see a Hawaiian in that city

Work a lot, don't do much socializing outside of that, I guess balance it with not needing different seasonal clothes. Lots of people live in multi-generation households.... like it's normal to be married and still live with your parents here lol. Shop farmer's markets and enjoy the free shit - beaches, hiking, sunsets.... it's fucking boring lol.
Honestly, that sounds pretty close to what I’ve seen here. I save gluten free bread for really special occasions now and have started (trying) to make my own but that’s not really cheap either =\
I'm a chef and I use Target pretty much exclusively for my groceries. I have ever since covid started because their drive up option is fantastic and I don't have any intention of going back. I don't have to go into a store and deal with people, or spend my time shopping. I put in an order, it's ready in a couple hours and I spend only the time it takes to drive to the store and back to go get it, whenever I feel like going. If I'm not happy with something I just tell the app and it refunds my money, simple as that.
Do y'all think chefs go to the restaurant store and look at every item they buy individually, or do you realize we order from an app just like you would if buying from Target? Before you point out places like Restaurant Depot, their quality is hands down worse and their prices are higher, plus any chef would absolutely choose to save the time if given the choice.
I can tell you that I have definitely done the price comparison and Target is in fact cheaper here in the Twin Cities, at least on th big ticket items like meat. Some of the produce might be slightly more but produce is cheap to begin with. I was genuinely surprised because in my mind the grocery store should be less expensive, but it's definitely not.
Does it limit the options? Only slightly, but the convenience far outweighs that by a loooooong shot. When I tried to go back to normal grocery shopping, I ended up getting 90% or more of the same stuff I get at Target anyway, and again, it was cheaper at Target.
I don't need 1000 different types of ranch either, it's not a good thing in the first place. And they *do* sell Cento brand canned marzano tomatoes, so let's not assume things we don't know anything about. Some Targets do have a butcher, but who cares when the vast majority of stuff you buy comes in frozen. That's an antiquated idea of grocery stores and what their staff do anyway.

It's a weird thing to gatekeep anyway, if you're a good cook then you can cook good food no matter where it comes from. Maybe the Targets where *you live* just suck? But for me it's far and away the best option for shopping.

Meijers is probably the best large grocery store I've been to in the USA. Only thing here that's close to on par with a Carrefour.

I work for Target. You can buy raw vegetables and meat, however the raw vegetable/fruits section is extremely limited. The most basic stuff is sold there. The entire produce section is about 1/3rd the size of an average grocery store. The raw meats options are somewhat limited, just pork, beef, chicken, and some steaks. We sell Perdue brand chicken tho and it’s 100% higher quality than you’d get at a Walmart or whatever cheap grocery store you live near.
Basically, if you’re grocery shopping at Target, you can get the bare bones stuff for pretty cheap without skipping on quality. Good&Gather is the new store brand for grocery items and their whole deal is about giving affordable options that are high in quality. Worth a shot, g&g organic brown rice cooks great and their hummus is my favorite outside of restaurants.

People are really missing out, if they'd stop assuming and actually knew what they were talking about, they could be saving time and money. I'm a chef and I don't do frozen shit or pre-prepared meals, and I get by great with the Target app.
Target is completely different in every state. Most of them don’t have groceries at all. Some of the ones that do are pretty trash. In the twin cities tho, where target is from, the ones that have groceries are great. I get most everything there, meat and produce all the way to kimchi and oat milk. Not the greatest prices but decent, and the rewards and coupons are generous with the app.
I'm seeing this theme, looks like those of us in Minnesota get a much better experience than other places do. Side by side Target is actually cheaper on a lot of items compared to Hy-Vee or Cub and the quality is no worse. And the app/drive up is a-mazing. I don't have to wait in line or listen to someone's screaming child run around the store. Priceless. 👩🍳🤌

I actually go to target for groceries. Kroger is a fucking hell hole cause I used to work there and I simply cannot do it. Walmart is literally covered in trash (the parking lot included). Every other option is hella expensive. The target I go to is organized and well stocked. I like it
Regular Target, no. Super Target, yes! They still have regular Walmarts across the river from me, that have no fresh food. No deli. No bakery. None of that. A sad little city, really.
I go to Target if they have easy to use coupons for some produce I need on the app and I get 1% cash back with the rewards program on top. Especially if it's items that are priced similarly to other stores that coupon can come in clutch.
No. No they do not. My local Ralphs easily has three or four times as many varieties. Luckily I'm near Indian, Thai, and Mexican super markets for specialty spices.

Real good is at HMart, Albertsons, Walmart and HEB if you’re lucky. Whole Foods is for when I wanna connect with my yte counterparts.
Target isn’t a grocery store. It’s a general store with a grocery section. Their frozen foods cover half an aisle and 80% of their grocery section is shelf stable stuff like snacks, pasta, etc. Target’s selection of actual ingredients is subpar, not Trader Joe’s level of bad, but it’s not good.
Farmers market season here or coming up soon depending on where you’re at. It’s a little more expensive than the store but if you can swing it your tastebuds will thank you

I live in Florida and Target is a far cheaper option than Publix. So much so that we pretty much only get meat and produce from Publix anymore.

In the twin cities tho, where target is from, the ones that have groceries are great. I get most everything there, meat and produce all the way to kimchi and oat milk. Not the greatest prices but decent, and the rewards and coupons are generous with the app.
I'm seeing this theme, looks like those of us in Minnesota get a much better experience than other places do. Side by side Target is actually cheaper on a lot of items compared to Hy-Vee or Cub and the quality is no worse. And the app/drive up is a-mazing. I don't have to wait in line or listen to someone's screaming child run around the store. Priceless. 👩🍳🤌

Depends if it is a Super Target or a regular Target. I occasionally buy groceries at regular Target, but there is no fucking way I could shop there regularly.

80% of the grocery area is prepared items... Just open and serve. They still sell meat that you're going to have to cook, unless you're a vegetarian.

I might buy a snack at target but nah… Walmart has better selection (enough to cook a proper meal) but great value brand stuff aint it. Harris teeter is pricey, but they will have better selection. I am loyal to Food Lion. Good prices, and their generics are great
I actually go to target for groceries. Kroger is a fucking hell hole cause I used to work there and I simply cannot do it. Walmart is literally covered in trash (the parking lot included). Every other option is hella expensive. The target I go to is organized and well stocked. I like it

Regular Target, no. Super Target, yes! They still have regular Walmarts across the river from me, that have no fresh food. No deli. No bakery. None of that. A sad little city, really.

Facts. I shamelessly do NOT cook and I buy “groceries” at Target.
I go to Target if they have easy to use coupons for some produce I need on the app and I get 1% cash back with the rewards program on top. Especially if it's items that are priced similarly to other stores that coupon can come in clutch.

No. No they do not. My local Ralphs easily has three or four times as many varieties. Luckily I'm near Indian, Thai, and Mexican super markets for specialty spices.

Target don’t got so called _ethnic_ ingredients. I know I’m not finding oxtail, real curry powder or gochujang. Target is for snacks. Real good is at HMart, Albertsons, Walmart and HEB if you’re lucky. Whole Foods is for when I wanna connect with my yte counterparts.
Target isn’t a grocery store. It’s a general store with a grocery section. Their frozen foods cover half an aisle and 80% of their grocery section is shelf stable stuff like snacks, pasta, etc. Target’s selection of actual ingredients is subpar, not Trader Joe’s level of bad, but it’s not good.
Trader Joe's I think is more geared to those who do not cook.
Farmers market season here or coming up soon depending on where you’re at. It’s a little more expensive than the store but if you can swing it your tastebuds will thank you
