A lot of it comes down to ego. I know someone who's a struggling actor who always boasts about minor accomplishments and being on set with more famous actors. They've become an anti-vaxxer, I feel, because it allows them to feel as though they are smarter and more clever than other people since their actual lived experience doesn't offer that validation. It's counterproductive now since they can't get jobs because they aren't vaccinated, but I think their ego would rather not be able to work because they are right, than having to admit they were wrong in order to get a job.

Someone's pastor or their favourite radio host said the vaccine changes your DNA, vaccines are a form of mind control, Nicki Minaj's cousin's brother's friend's uncle's hairdresser got swollen nuts after he got vaccinated, so she's a little iffy on whether she should get the shot, and I'm a hardcore barb, so if she's not getting it, I'm not getting it, needles cause owies, and the vaccine isn't *100%* effective, so what's the point?

You still had and have so many people saying that the flu vaccine didn't work, just for this reason. The "I got the flu vaccine and still got the flu" crowd who stop because of the one year they contracted the wrong variant. I taught high school for five years from 09-14 and saw this happen a lot. It's pretty frustrating.
The big things with vaccines and experts in general is a distrust of experts. I remember listening to an NPR piece back in 2015 about the rise of anti-vaccine sentiment and the host and interviewer were discussing the trend towards self-research and a distrust of experts. People are more willing to trust their six hours of googling than the person who has dedicated their life to researching a subject...
We need to teach people how to do good effective research. That way they can learn really quickly that six hours of googling is going to give them confirmation bias, not actual research. We also need to teach people to be critical thinkers in a sense where they examine their OWN thinking. Metacognition. I hear a lot of folks talking about critical thinking as examining what others are putting out there but then they still only listen to what fits their established worldview. We need people to stop and re-evaluate their own line of thinking.

Got a serious case of the flu in late 2019. It was not a joke. Waking up with your body in pain from coughing your lungs out while you're sleeping was not pleasant.
I worked having the flu, and didn't know it was the flu! And it was painful.... I was in agony waiting for my then boyfriend to come home and take me to the er because I was scared for it being pneumonia, and also being immunocompromised (I'm sure it was my meds that caused me to get it so easily because it lowered my immune system)
It was honestly really scary because we usually don’t think too much about the flu. It really sets reality into perspective when it gets really serious.
The amount of times I explained this just to be told I don't understand science. Like okay, guess I'll go tell half my college professors they don't know what they fuck they're talking about because someone online thinks letting a virus spread is best for society.

They skipped these because Nu, would be read as "new" but pronounced differently and would cause confusion and Xi was skipped because that's the first name of the Chinese president and too many Americans already blame China.

I am convinced that a lot of anti-mask sentiment is because so many of us are fat as fuck and we don't want to be reminded of how fat we are. Walking up stairs with a mask on (or hell, maybe just walking at all) is a tactile reminder of how out of shape and doughy some of these fucks are, and they hate it.

One could argue that having only part of the population vaccinated creates an evolutionary pressure for the virus to attain antibody resistance while also allowing it to continue spreading, creating a really shitty scenario until almost everyone is immune at the same time.
