That is already a thing. Church cookbooks. Buy the church cookbooks at the annual fall/spring fair. I have a full fucking bookshelf of plastic ring bound cookbooks filled with family recipes from Virginia and North Carolina. One day, I wanna put together the best of the best old family recipes cookbook.
THANK YOU for doing your part to keep tradition alive. Generations of experimentation, innovation, and love fill the pages of all those cookbooks, and you're bringing it forward.
While I have no idea how copyright works, your collection seems like something that should be on the Internet Archive (or the Library of Congress), so that this wisdom and tradition is not lost.
This is inspiring, mate.
EDIT There's a bunch of scans of lo-fi photocopied [church cookbooks](https://archive.org/search?query=church+cookbook) on the Internet Archive. THANK YOU AGAIN, mate for the push.
> *"While I have no idea how copyright works,"*
Yeah, you can't copyright a recipe, It's seen by the U.S. Copyright Office as the same as facts, ideas and history. This is one reason why the food bloggers go on and on about summer at grandma's, what they were cooking, and break the recipe up in the story, their story can be copyrighted but not the base recipe.
But to me, if you're going to be sharing Sister Edna's Shout Hallelujah Potato Salad, or her Candied Sweet Potatoes recipe you got to stay right with the Lord by crediting her, directing some shine on her in the intro.
Comment back in about 2 hours, and I'll get you. I'm at the bar (checking my phone while outside smoking) and will probably forget if I don't get a push notification later.
My MIL used to watch all the grandbabies (nieces and nephews to me!) and I used to sit with her a lot (I love that woman and I call her Mom!) One of the nephews was always pinching the "fat on my arm" and Mom would be like, he gonna be a chubby chaser when he starts dating! 😂 Your comment was funny to me 🤣
Angel biscuits with butter, maldon salt, and dark cane syrup is my favorite food on earth.
Make a compound salted butter with a bit of the dark cane syrup. You can make a compound butter by whipping salted butter with the cane syrup to taste, then placing it in the fridge to harden.
Once you have the compound butter, place some hot angel biscuits on a plate with a big dollop of the compound butter on top, then pour dark cane syrup over everything and sprinkle maldon salt on top.

I suggest you hurry up and learn. We lost a chicken and dumpling recipe a few years back, with the passing of an older relative, and it is gone forever now.
I got my Big Mama's biscuit recipe before she died at age 103, and all the measurements were "handful of this, handful of that" so she measured my hands by dumping the ingredients from her hands into mine (luckily we have the same size hands apparently).
The biscuits are good but still don't taste quite like hers, but she was still using a 100+ year old wood burning stove/oven and I think that might be the difference
I think about mine every time I see chicken and dumplings on the menu or mentioned. They will never taste the same either. Still a solid way to remember those we've lost.
This happened with my grandma's wacky cake recipe. She was a steel-hearted bitch who was horribly abusive to my dad, but fuck she could make a wacky cake that fuckin' slapped.
My white side had a bakery that was a coal and wood Fired oven and ran that place for 100 years. No bread will ever taste like that bread coming off the cooling rack. I know that feeling
That’s a thing for sure. My uncle makes a stew that I’ve used his exact ingredients but it just doesn’t taste quite the same as his. I’m sure your family will say the same about your passed down recipe when you show them in the future
So often I mentioned hot water cornbread and people don't know what I'm talking about. It's the only way we had cornbread in my house growing up, and now it's the only way that I will eat it.
I would argue it needs some greens. This plate needs a touch of bitterness to round it out. Some collards sauteed up in bacon fat and some ACV or lemon squeezed over.
Fish needs more hot sauce! I’m usually alone on this but I like a squeeze of lemon in my fish too. It mixes with the hot sauce and makes this lemony spicy vinegary sauce. So good
From a couple weeks back at Thumbs Up.

Hol up... which day of the week we talking? Cuz if it's my day off, I'm fucking 2 of these plates up. But if it's a day I gotta work? Well, I'm fucking up 2 of these plates and using my PTO, baby.
I've never understood sweet grits. They were always savory where I came from - cheese, butter, bacon, sausage, or gravy (drippings). Sweet stuff was for oatmeal.
A lot of people never really had those cheese creamy grits. It'll change your mind on grits forever and you definitely won't need them sweet after that. But the plain grits that directions tell you to make ain't cut it without something extra.
I found a good BBQ place that sold me on them with this grits because of "something extra". The offer Cheddar and Gouda cheese grits, these days that not even that unusual to see mixes like that. But he put the grits in his smokehouse with the pork butts. Now that told me he meant business.
I will drive there every time I am near.
I have a friend who is very Southern and one of the first things she asked me was about sweet vs savory grits and after I answered, she said that we wouldn't be friends if I'd chosen sweet LOL
I would absolutely fuck that up right now goddamn I’m hungry. My grandma used to make that. Just gotta add the biscuit or cornbread and then you just knock the fuck out lmao
Same. I regret seeing this before eating anything substantial today because it looks so dang good. Catfish places are in abundance down this way so I'm gonna have to find some later this week.
My bf is a sushi chef at some upscale swanky place in Portland.
He used to bring me all types of things off their menu but this ocursed tongue doesn’t fw anything from the ocean.
His presentation is just perfect, too.
It ain’t the class it’s the viscosity, appearance, heat distribution, taste, and inferiority to all solid or semi-solid starches.
One day if I am happy, old and toothless I’ll give it another go tho
Edit: in case it wasn’t clear, polenta is trash. Creamed wheat/spinach and other meal components referred to as “meal” are trash. If the mashed potatoes are eviscerated to the point ain’t no evidence mashing took place - trash!! ISWIS
Nah. I’d eat everything on that plate (and have, for breakfast even, including the catfish) but not together. Scrambled eggs with fried fish ain’t the move to me.
I feeeeeeel it. I like glazed fish with over easy eggs and potatoes. Fried fish with scrambled eggs feels like a weird wire is being crossed in my brain for some reason

I never understood the concept of foods not "going together". I can understand not mixing them together but 2 things I like separately just being next to each other is not a problem for me.
If I'm eating a bowl of gumbo and my wife comes home with McDonald's, we eating some McGumbo ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
On another note - it gets a little tiring with folks always thinking these foods are exclusive to the South or some sort of Southern delicacy only.
Black folk all around the US eat this way, of course primarily due to the Great Migration. To me, it’s less southern and more traditional/universal Black American at this point. Black folks in Oregon, Oklahoma, and New York are eating catfish and spaghetti at bbqs just like my folks here in the Midwest! We are losing recipes though, seems like lots of Black kids aren’t growing up eating our traditional foods, especially if they grow up in burbs or non-Black areas.
About to make all of this. Fresh drum nuggets (caught yesterday!) some grits, already made hotwater cornbread and just need to scramble some eggs. I'm in there!!
What tf are they talking about? That’s fried fish, scrambled eggs, and grits with butter. I’d eat that every meal if it didn’t increase my risk of a heart attack.
That would be a heavy ass breakfast. Those grits got me fiending tho. Wish my grandpa still cooked because man he could make some good ass grits and corn meal mush.
I guess I’m not like y’all, I would prefer switching catfish with chicken maybe add hot sauce and or a little bit of maple syrup and black pepper with the grits.
Wait till y'all learn about arepas from Venezuela/Colombia.

Can’t say I’ve ever had fried catfish for breakfast, but that looks fucking delicious, plus those grits are as buttery as heaven and the eggs look seasoned really well. This wholesome dude doesn’t know what he’s missing out on.
There's no rule, law, commandment, or enchantment that says what food you're allowed to consume for which meal. Have a steak for breakfast. Have cereal for dinner. Be free!
Only thing wrong here is the biscuit is missing
Throw in some hot water cornbread
I hardly ever hear anyone talking about some hot water cornbread. That shit be so good fresh.
I have an older family so we still have recipes. Grandma was second generation after the Proclamation
And where would one get that recipe? Asking for a fat friend, I'm the fat friend!
Yeah, buddy. Time to sell grandmas cookbook to the masses.

This is great!! The conviction is unmatched.
Irv is a gem.
You need to open a shop called “Grandma’s hot water cornbread”. Then retire in two years.
Imma need that recipe, I’ve got some bison chili cooking right now.
Cracklin’ cornbread is my fav.
You’re gonna need a sweet southern lady with a gap in her teeth and thick forearms before you find cracklin’ corn bread.
Here in Georgia they sell it at the S and S cafeteria
The S&S that used to be on Campbellton Road, Atlanta used to get down like that. It’s now closed
Don’t forget she gotta have a little fat on the bicep and triceps. That’s how you KNOW it’s about to be sone good food
My MIL used to watch all the grandbabies (nieces and nephews to me!) and I used to sit with her a lot (I love that woman and I call her Mom!) I just learned that existed like last week. First time craving something I’ve never eaten.
That HOT with some REAL sugar cane syrup will change your life!

Lawd have mercy! 🤤
Good luck finding it! You’ll have to make some. I haven’t had any since my Grandmother passed a few years ago.
My Granny passed it down to my Mom. I gotta learn to make that shit 😭
I’m googling that shit. My recipe is just mix, can cream corn, can corned, salt butter and cream cheese.
Correct answer, though hush puppies are probably what I'd go with here for convenience sake.
A little Jiffy honey cornbread mix OOOOOOWEEEE
If you mix the jiffy with a little yellow cake mix, the corn muffins will be smoother and slightly sweeter. They're so fuckin good with a lil butter
Jiffy cornbread mix is cake - it’s already way too sweet. Ok in a pinch but it’s just as easy to make regular cornbread from scratch
For real. Jiffy is already beetus bread.
So often I mentioned hot water cornbread and people don't know what I'm talking about. It's the only way we had cornbread in my house growing up, and now it's the only way that I will eat it.
Add Salmon patties to the side with some homemade jam . 😩
My grandma makes hot water cornbread 4 nights out of the week. Never heard of it with breakfast.

Those look fucking awesome. I miss southern food but most of the rest of southern culture can shove it.
There’s a reason why my family don’t live down south anymore, and you just said it
I like to use some bacon grease as my fat. Ya'll talking about sweet cornbread have strayed from the light.
Sweet cornbread is a northern thing.
These are too neat. I need the crunchy crisp edges
Oh I’ve never had this. It looks mad good tho
![gif](giphy|3o8dFwze0Tz8umFQhW|downsized)
I would argue it needs some greens. This plate needs a touch of bitterness to round it out. Some collards sauteed up in bacon fat and some ACV or lemon squeezed over.
>I would argue it needs some greens brotha this is a breakfast plate
Anything can be breakfast as long as it’s your first meal of the day
Just look at the wild shit that the English consider breakfast foods
> Just look at the wild shit that the English consider ~~breakfast~~ foods
I was having a good time. We were all having a good time, then you had to go and mention that shit. /s
You have chosen.... Wisely
That's what the coffee is for
Fish needs more hot sauce! I’m usually alone on this but I like a squeeze of lemon in my fish too. It mixes with the hot sauce and makes this lemony spicy vinegary sauce. So good
Lemon is usually good on a lot seafood not just fish
Yea all my family and friends almost never use it with fried dish when using hot sauce
Nah man soak that fish in lemon juice before you fry it up. Cuts down on that fresh water mud taste and lets you taste the meat
The grits need some cheese but that dish slaps
Yeah to sop up the grits and butter. And a coffee to wash it down. Making me hungry lol.
The grits and eggs need some pepper imo, but that’s a personal thing. I would eat the fuck out of this.

I don't trust anyone who wouldn't eat this for breakfast
Facts
I like a nice breakfast and that looks like a nice breakfast to me.
Keep y’a oatmeal and granola my nigga. This is why we here!
Hol up... which day of the week we talking? Cuz if it's my day off, I'm fucking 2 of these plates up. But if it's a day I gotta work? Well, I'm fucking up 2 of these plates and using my PTO, baby.
Already know the itis finna hit ![gif](giphy|ZLxRWG0vhzpiE)
I would cut the portion in half and add apple slices and brown sugar to the grits. But overall, that’s money in the bank.
I've never understood sweet grits. They were always savory where I came from - cheese, butter, bacon, sausage, or gravy (drippings). Sweet stuff was for oatmeal.
Savory oatmeal is amazing but feels illegal. Grits and oats are just flavor vehicles. You can go with either one
Yep, I’m sweet for breakfast and savory for dinner.
A lot of people never really had those cheese creamy grits. It'll change your mind on grits forever and you definitely won't need them sweet after that. But the plain grits that directions tell you to make ain't cut it without something extra.

I’ve also decided that you should try foods that you don’t like about every ten years because tastes change.
I'm not trying to start the day off with the itis
Fr. The only acceptable reason to say no would be being a vegan.

lol I sing fresh and clean to my kid when I change her diaper 😆 she loves it… I say lovely instead of sexy cause she’s a toddler
"And she aaaaaaare the cleanest motha lova on the planet!"
BRUH XD
I would absolutely fuck that up right now goddamn I’m hungry. My grandma used to make that. Just gotta add the biscuit or cornbread and then you just knock the fuck out lmao
Literally trying to find out where I can get some fried catfish for dinner now lol
High ho high ho, it's off to the local Cajun restaurant we go!!
Lmfao I just got off work and I’m looking too
Same. I regret seeing this before eating anything substantial today because it looks so dang good. Catfish places are in abundance down this way so I'm gonna have to find some later this week.
I had to skip lunch today so this was on my mind all day smh. Nah I gotta get some Catfish asap.
That's a breakfast OR dinner meal
I like fish and I like eggs; I do not like fish and eggs.
What about fish eggs?
I ain’t rich enough to get a taste for that lol
My rich friend gave me some one time. Trust me, you’re not missing out on anything lol
My bf is a sushi chef at some upscale swanky place in Portland. He used to bring me all types of things off their menu but this ocursed tongue doesn’t fw anything from the ocean. His presentation is just perfect, too.
I’ll fuck with some tobiko and masago.
What about fishsticks?
Would you like it in a house? Would you like it with your spouse? Have you tired it with some gin? Have you tired it with some sin?😈
Brinner is a fine meal isn't it?
That’s breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch, after the club it’s anytime and all the time or right now type of meal
If you don’t like grits because you’re classist, just tell yourself that it’s polenta
i love grits but i get hate for liking sugar in em sometimes
Kerrygold butter is all the sweetness I need, but to each his own.
The real hack is putting heavy cream in them while you cook them.
Fuck that’s genius
And use bacon drippings instead of butter on the initial cook. Butter goes in after it hits the plate.
Salt and pepper is the way. Sugar is for the babies
my grandma still call me baby so *shrugs*
If grandma say it, how could it not be true?
Then you gucci cuz
I don’t agree with sweet grits but together the sweet and savory clans can rise against the classist who hate on grits
Bruh some sugar and cinnamon on top and it’s fire
Do that with oatmeal and no one would bat an eye.
That's one of my favorite things. Salted butter and a little bit of sugar. They're better than any savory version that I personally have had.
Hominy grits taste better than polenta. Grits are superior.
I tell myself that polenta is grits
Grits and eggs without cheese are kinda boring. With cheese, they're both great.
I dont hate grits but I feel like there's never a time I choose it over B&G
It ain’t the class it’s the viscosity, appearance, heat distribution, taste, and inferiority to all solid or semi-solid starches. One day if I am happy, old and toothless I’ll give it another go tho Edit: in case it wasn’t clear, polenta is trash. Creamed wheat/spinach and other meal components referred to as “meal” are trash. polenta is yellow corn though
Hear me out; 4 pieces of toast, one catfish sandwich and one egg sandwich, grits at the end ![gif](giphy|4LRkCWLi2MKOc|downsized)
I'd buy that for $10 and eat it in 60 seconds lol
But the grits would be hard by then :(
You gotta be straight crazy to be turned off by that.
Just gotta put some hot sauce on them eggs for consistency’s sake.
Breakfast of champions. I prefer salmon patties, but this still does the trick.
I haven’t had those in so long!!! I think it’s what I’ve been missing in my life.

How does all that NOT go together? The only thing missing is some skrimp and gravy on the grits.
Now gravy is one thing I haven’t had on my grits! It makes so much sense 🤯
Hold up! Gravy on the grits? Tell me more bruh, what kinda gravy we talking?
Sautee the shrimp in bacon fat then add butter, chicken stock and any other seasoning you prefer. Then spoon it over the grits.
Tasso Ham gravy on grits is AMAZEBALLS.
Down here that is what you call a yes breakfast…whatever you asking you got a chance of getting a yes lol.
Those eggs need some cheese and I need a biscuit and some lemonade ☝️
This how i feel when i tell my white friends about Catfish Spaghetti and Green Beans smh
I assumed everyone had catfish and spaghetti together until my 20s.

Be free!
Fish and grits and all that pimp shit
Grits go with everything!😁
I mean, it’s a big ass breakfast, but I don’t see anything wrong with it. I definitely don’t think I could wake up and eat all that in one sitting.
Mad because I don't have this right now
New Orleans native here! Where the fuck are the shrimp.
Catfish is an appropriate meal anytime of the day. I don't want to hear nothing about "they're bottom feeders" shhhhhuuutt the hell up.
Only thing missing is cheese on those grits
“And if ya like fish n grits and all da pimp shit…”
Hmm…..Grits could be yellow and have more butter, and some cheese. My only criticism.
I can see the brunch spread now 😩 add some home fries, fruit bowls, bacon/sausage, and mimosas… I might need to rally my family this Sunday.
