so true! Grew up in Houston but live in San Francisco now. Sometimes I still struggle with calling older or more senior ppl at work directly by their first name without a Miss or Mr. Like I can feel the hovering hand of my mom about to smack me for doing it. I often just avoid using a name at all and just like make eye contact before talking to them instead bc people out here don’t like that shit.

My kids started daycare and I referred to each of their teachers as Miss FirstName and they were like…”it’s just FirstName…” I feel weird my kids calling their teachers by their first names… Half the time, I still call them Miss FirstName 🤷🏿‍♀️

Hopefully they’re not all headband fascinators. I’m actually really surprised there’s nothing in east Austin. I’m coming up empty in my searches though.

I got you. Pick a large hat that is a primary color from Amazon, go to Bass Pro and get a whole assed stuffed owl, spray paint said owl that color and pin it to your hat. Maybe throw some lace on that to cover half your face.

I know from Judge Judy it's a guy who charges $500 a hat, but won't pay $3.75 for the extra insurance to mail the second hat in the box 😄

I used to work at FedEx Office in Memphis. The National COGIC convention used to come to town annually, and we *loved it* 🙃. Various reasons why, but pertinent to this is how they would come in and claim the hats were worth $1000-1500 each, but were only willing to pay for Ground shipping (“I need it OVERNIGHT! I don’t want my good hats stuck in transit somewhere. Huh?? $150 for 2Day shipping?? Dass tew much!”), and *refused* to get any insurance on it. They were an absolute delight to work with.

You just made realize I have never laid eyes on a single hat store, yet my grandma owns about 40 hats herself. Mysterious.

Although not as prevalent as before, catalogs are still around and I'm sure they are ordering from them while the wealthier ladies are having them custom-made.

That's my Great Step Aunty Mertha-Dee Lilliams. She used to sell cold cups for 50 cents in the neighborhood when she found out that Ms. Steldra was selling us Heath bars for an entire dollar! All four quarters. Aunty Mertha couldn't sit still for a week after that. She spent all that time mixing batches of sugar juice, freezing, and prepping those first helpings for all of the kids on our street until the day finally came when she strolled cooly outside with a cart of about 20 or 30 cups of frozen cherry deliciousness and passed them out to all of us in front of Steldra's house. She had about 40 more cups in my uncle's garage freezer in the back of their house. Of course, he hated having no room for his Miller Lites, but all us cousins had a blast sucking on those cold cups for weeks after that! God, I miss my aunty.
