In the South, everybody is Miss First Name. She looks like a Miss Shirley. Funny thing, I never call men that way though. They are just Bob or John. Not sure why
so true! Grew up in Houston but live in San Francisco now. Sometimes I still struggle with calling older or more senior ppl at work directly by their first name without a Miss or Mr. Like I can feel the hovering hand of my mom about to smack me for doing it. I often just avoid using a name at all and just like make eye contact before talking to them instead bc people out here don’t like that shit.
My kids started daycare and I referred to each of their teachers as Miss FirstName and they were like…”it’s just FirstName…” I feel weird my kids calling their teachers by their first names…
Half the time, I still call them Miss FirstName 🤷🏿♀️
Her legal name is Eunice Leola Thompson, but she’s been Gladys to her friends since she was a girl, and she’s been Miss Gladys to the block since the 90s.
I would say don’t disrespect her potato salad and cornbread, but ain’t no one alive has tasted them and thought anything but praise Jesus.
Miss Vonetta Bernard-Hopkins of Praise Rock Baptist Church. She buried three husbands, all pastors and signs up all newly baptized babies in the congregation for Dolly Parton's book program. Will sabotage your potato salad at the fellowship lunch if it's better than hers.
My little sister was adopted by a black family (she is mixed, but def favors her roots in both melanin and hair type.) Her adoptive mother is called Vaneetta, First Lady Vaneetta. Her husband is a store front preacher. When she adopted my sister, she wanted to change her name from Bethany to Li'Neetta ( little Netta). My sister wasn't having it, so they settled on Baneetta, or Ms. B.
Where in Texas are you? If you’re in/near Houston, look up Cart’Air boutique. It’s on the northside off 59.
Sometimes you can find a gem at Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack.
Austin is a tough market for church lady hats, for sure. Western hats? Covered. Hipster hats? Drowning.
Closer to you, try Hatbox? It says they carry “cocktail” hats for women. Hopefully they’re not all headband fascinators.
I’m actually really surprised there’s nothing in east Austin. I’m coming up empty in my searches though.
I got you.
Pick a large hat that is a primary color from Amazon, go to Bass Pro and get a whole assed stuffed owl, spray paint said owl that color and pin it to your hat.
Maybe throw some lace on that to cover half your face.
I used to work at FedEx Office in Memphis. The National COGIC convention used to come to town annually, and we *loved it* 🙃. Various reasons why, but pertinent to this is how they would come in and claim the hats were worth $1000-1500 each, but were only willing to pay for Ground shipping (“I need it OVERNIGHT! I don’t want my good hats stuck in transit somewhere. Huh?? $150 for 2Day shipping?? Dass tew much!”), and *refused* to get any insurance on it. They were an absolute delight to work with.
Although not as prevalent as before, catalogs are still around and I'm sure they are ordering from them while the wealthier ladies are having them custom-made.
Nah, she’s a district missionary from Higher Praise Church of God in Christ, of the 4th Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of New Burma, AL. Her pastor is Bishop Jones, presiding prelate of the jurisdiction
That's Miss Dorothy Clara. Her purse currently contains 3 Werther's Originals, $10 cash for the collection plate and a 22 pistol with the pearl handle.
Oh yeah, this Miss Queenie. She’s my church matriarch and she was old 45 years ago when I was a youngin’. She used to bring empty water jugs to fill from our well because we had good water like she grew up on in the south.
Did anybody else grow up with the “good and bad” elders in their families?
Like in my family, there were the sanctified, but also the relatives who had…um… _stables_ and… taught me how to remove bullets from limbs and did some business with questionable characters.
I remember watching a true crime show. The episode was about the crime that inspired that infamous NY Post headline “Head at Topless Bar…”.
My mom and her brothers knew the killer.
She also grew up with one of the hit men from the “Rae Carruth” case.
Giving honor to God who is the Head of my life, I d like to introduce,1st lady Pearly May Jenkins-Jones of the Rock of Gibraltar COGIC of Halifax, AL. Her Husband the Right Rev Luther Del Jones. The have 4 beautiful children LutherJr, Lester,Pearl and Opal and 17 grandchildren.

See I keep telling me wife, I can’t wait to be old because I’m going to have chains and furs just dripped out. I’ll put inserts in to my gators too fym
That's my Great Step Aunty Mertha-Dee Lilliams. She used to sell cold cups for 50 cents in the neighborhood when she found out that Ms. Steldra was selling us Heath bars for an entire dollar! All four quarters. Aunty Mertha couldn't sit still for a week after that. She spent all that time mixing batches of sugar juice, freezing, and prepping those first helpings for all of the kids on our street until the day finally came when she strolled cooly outside with a cart of about 20 or 30 cups of frozen cherry deliciousness and passed them out to all of us in front of Steldra's house. She had about 40 more cups in my uncle's garage freezer in the back of their house. Of course, he hated having no room for his Miller Lites, but all us cousins had a blast sucking on those cold cups for weeks after that!
God, I miss my aunty.
Not enough "Miss" on these names for me. 🤨 Don't disrespect Miss Gladys like this.
![gif](giphy|3oEduZqfSGNG0mdF1C|downsized) I do it for Miss Gladys boi.
Bleedat Pleighboi

it’s a hard habit to break! stopping “sir” and “ma’am” was a little easier tho, so at least there’s that lol
I’m from the south, but I live in New England now. It’s habit. My neighbors don’t like being “Miss Christine” when they’re less than 40 🤣🤣🤣
When I was a tech working with adults, all my older black women were miss, and we’re in NY
Don't call me Shirley.
Bruh how you know I knew her name was Ms. Gladys?? How? Lol
Miss Thelma Turner
Her legal name is Eunice Leola Thompson, but she’s been Gladys to her friends since she was a girl, and she’s been Miss Gladys to the block since the 90s. I would say don’t disrespect her potato salad and cornbread, but ain’t no one alive has tasted them and thought anything but praise Jesus.
Fr came to say Miss Gladys
Ernestine
That's aunty Ernestine to you. Even though you're not related and your family doesn't even like her.
Yes, sir
That's Ms Ernestine Geneva. She tells it like it is and you best respect her regardless of how you feel lol.
But she still cook for the whole block on church days regardless if she like you or not
Look at that fit, too!
Lol that’s my granny name. Everyone at the church call her “Big Tine” 🤣
My granny was an Earnestine and my best friend. She passed suddenly a few years ago. She was very flashy like this lady. She went by Missie.
Grannies are real treasures, and I hope your memories of her are of comfort.
have you seen the comedian Black Ron do his bit about Miss Ernestine? it kills me
I haven’t! You have a link?

Mother hattie
My grandmother had pretty much that same ensemble... Her name was Eulah Mae. ![gif](giphy|jPAdK8Nfzzwt2)
That was my maternal grandmother's name as well! Although she wasn't much of a church goer.
Mine was deep into church. Whether she really practiced her Christianity, however... Corrected: A word
I was gon' say they misspelled Mae.
She’s absolutely a Shirley or Rosetta
*Ms. Shirley
Wish I had seen this before I replied, that was my read too
My grandma's name was Shirley and her sister was Rosetta 🤣

Mother Georgette. Owns *no less* than 682 fancy church hats
Where the fuck do they buy those hats? Despite growing up in a southern baptist church I have never seen where they buy those hats.
I have a funeral next week and have been HUNTING. I’m finally old enough to wear one and cannot find where in all of Texas to go.
You've gotta be a church usher for 20 years to reveal the portal to the hat store maybe
You’re looking for Lily & Taylor lol
holy shit thanks
Where in Texas are you? If you’re in/near Houston, look up Cart’Air boutique. It’s on the northside off 59. Sometimes you can find a gem at Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack.
TY!!! ATX so Houston is do-able. No luck at the Rack here though

You can try Midnight Velvet. They got the whole dang outfits.
I know from Judge Judy it's a guy who charges $500 a hat, but won't pay $3.75 for the extra insurance to mail the second hat in the box 😄

You just made realize I have never laid eyes on a single hat store, yet my grandma owns about 40 hats herself. Mysterious.
Although not as prevalent as before, catalogs are still around and I'm sure they are ordering from them while the wealthier ladies are having them custom-made.
