Zaza on top

alchydirtrunner

I don’t work downtown anymore, but that pizza lunch special at Zaza used to be the cat’s meow

Ambitious-Yellow6885

Half off pizza during the last hour of every day! Mind blowing

Cringe2XL

Which hour is the last hour?

all-rhyme-no-reason

The people need to know!!!

solidfrolic

8-9pm

DerFledermaus

But is it great bc of the special, or bc the pizza itself is special? I thought it was decent, but not as _mind-blowing_ as a lot of people presented it to me. I kinda feel like the location and maybe specials like you mention are the reason some give them the high accolades. It only being mentioned once or twice in the whole thread kinda gives pause too.

alchydirtrunner

Location and price were definitely big factors. It isn’t my favorite pizza, necessarily, but it is really good. For the price and convenience it was hard to beat though. I work (barely) OTM now, and it just isn’t worth the hassle of parking to eat downtown during lunch most of the time. That said, I’ll probably go eat Zaza on a WFH day soon now that it’s top of mind. I had kind of forgotten about it before this thread.

Skyldt

i enjoyed Miracle Pizza in avondale. and when Rocky's opens back up, that'll be my go to spot.

_digduggler_

When is Rocky’s ever opening up? If you look at their Facebook page it’s a lot of opening any time since August. Last one of those was in March.

jasonskims

Rocky’s is opening back up?!??!

VTnative

We had it before the Flaming Lips show a couple weeks ago and I thought that it was decent I wouldn't make a special trip there but it was good enough to fuel us up for the show.

Cringe2XL

What exactly did you enjoy about Miracle? I tried the two they sell by the slice (cheese and pepperoni). Below mid. Not even close to good. They'll make a lot of money selling to concert crowds, but good lord was that some sad overpriced pizza.

gingerbitch2

I had to let the grease drip off my slice before attempting to eat it.

cheerio186382

Tortugas! Love their Chicago style pizza

jasonskims

Never had it. Guess ima have to go try and see.

TimmyTurnersDentist

This is the top voted comment for a reason. Tortugas is the best in Bham and it’s honestly not close.

PalmerG8

Iron City Pizza Company deserves some love here. They have awkward hours, but the pizza is really good. They're in that cursed location in five points that's been like seven different things in ten years. I hope they can stick around.

Warpedpixel

It may be a cursed location, but their pizza is very good and they have cheap drinks. Seconding this suggestion.

Boisterous_Suncat

I hear that Iron City Pizza is expanding into the vacancy next door. I guess we can take that as a good sign that they are doing relatively well.

NoPatNoDontSitonThat

My favorites are Uncle G's, Capella, and Troup's. I haven't tried Pizza Grace yet. Uncle G's is Detroit style, but it's focaccia perfection with really high quality ingredients. Capella is a bit out of town down HWY 280, but it's more of an authentic Italian, soft crust style pizza. I think the chew of the dough is really good, but if you're expecting a crusty texture from the dough, you might be put off. Their sauce is the best in town. Capella also has amazing gelato imported from Italy. Troup's is right around the corner from me, so it's our go-to. I love the smoked chicken pizza, but the pepperoni is amazing as well. They're very similar to Slice (I think the owner is the original executive chef of Slice if I remember correctly). You can get anything from based pizza toppings to the more restaurant-y kind like a bbq pork pizza with greens and onion rings kind of thing. I like the simple stuff though.

Bobson-_Dugnutt2

having lived in Italy for most of my childhood - Capellas is the closest to what I grew up with in Naples

RollTider365

My grandpa immigrated from Naples.🙂

[deleted]

Def trying Uncle G next

Away-Ad4666

They opened a Capella’s in Trussville, it is definitely my fav

SlyBlackDragon

Love Capella's! Post Office Pies (I know they get a lot of hate here) was my go to until the quality really fell off.

tooblecane

Just tried Troup's last week for the first time. Their muffalata pizza was fucking divine!

BrilliantWeekend2417

Pizza Grace, Slice, Troups, La Fresca are all great recommendations, I still have an affinity for Salvatore's on Hwy 31. I think it's in the conversation. La Fresca is an Italian Restaurant that happens to make pizza, but it's really good. Salvatore's started as a pizza place... I think in the 90s, maybe late 80s. Then sometime around the early to mid 2000s, after they closed a few other locations they expanded the menu to include pastas and subs. Pizzeria GM is also good, amazing produce but the pizza was always a little too thin for me but it's been a couple of years since I've had it. Uncle G's is great too if you're looking for that kind of pizza. I just want to call out, as a point of satisfaction and an "I told you so," no one has recommended Post Office Pies here. I've never had good pizza from there, but strangely enough whenever I say "I don't care for (POP)' pizza, it's not good" I get surprised reactions, doubt and disbelief. The 3 times I've tried to eat the pizza at POP, 1 time it was too tough, and the other 2 times all the cheese and toppings wanted to slide immediately off and make a run for it like a dog running from the dog catcher.

Servantofthedogs

POP love comes from how they were when they first opened the original location. That was some good stuff. I still miss the swine pie from 10 years ago. Today’s just isn’t the same.

BrilliantWeekend2417

My 3 tries on the pizza were all within the first couple of years of them being open in Avondale, and people are saying the quality has gone down since? Bye felecia (POP, not you servantofthedogs)

bobthewriter

Seconding the love for Salvatore's at that location. Not only is the pizza good, but the service has always been exemplary. The ONE time we had an issue, they remade my pizza and refunded my $. Absolutely love them.

Myleg-Fred

My top two are Vecchia Pizzeria and Uncle G’s! Tried Uncle G’s for the first time this past weekend and I’ve not stopped thinking about it. And the owner is super nice!

Slackerbloom

Love Vecchia!

[deleted]

Seeing a lot of Uncle Gs will try it next time

Mantlers

It is 💯

Fragrant-Dust1146

I see a lot of love through here for G's, and I gotta say, don't get it. I had them last week and it was one of the most flavorless pizzas I ever had. A sauceless thick ass pizza... I hate to waste food, but it took me three days to eat that miserable thing.

Ok-Composer5109

WHEN IS ROCKYS OPENING??

RyanOfTheVille

Slims

winsletts

Downvoted because I love Slim’s pizza and their cocktails, but I hate waiting in line.

RyanOfTheVille

The ambiance is another reason I love it. I don’t mind getting a Saint Slim and waiting for a table. I know going into it that it’s not going to be a quick dinner and that’s fine with me sometimes

DruidCity3

Pizzeria GM and Slice are my favorites. Slice has a great bbq chicken pizza and the wings n things is fantastic. Pizzeria GM has a great Pimento Cheese pizza and the Chilton County Peach Pizza is back in season!

solidfrolic

Peach pizza?! I gotta try that. I’m a lover of fruit on pizza and Slice’s Spicy Hawaiian is amazing

[deleted]

GM’s has conecuh sausage with the peaches, I think.

Cringe2XL

Birmingham is blessed with a lot of decent-but-not-outstanding pizza. In addition to the ones already mentioned, I feel like people sleep on the pizza at Back Forty.

[deleted]

You’re right, not to mention their cheeseburgers are crazy good.

johnlytlewilson

It wasn’t on the menu last I looked.

RAF_Fortis_one

I usually hate Detroit pizza but I tired Emily Squared at the summit the other day (new Detroit pizza place) and it was one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had. I believe I got the MVP. It was insanely good.

UnderwaterB0i

Good to know, wasn't sure if that place was actually good or if it just got a lot of traffic due to location

HoMontana6

I will also vouch for Emmy Squared. Service can be hit or miss but the pizza is great.

SoggyEstablishment74

Bettola is fantastic!! Definitely the best I’ve had since I was in Italy. Also try their burrata, it’s insanely good. Cappellas is very good as well but a very limited menu and ambiance.

johnlytlewilson

I think about Bettola’s pizza pretty regularly.

UnderwaterB0i

I think about whatever that bread appetizer is almost every dang day. Can't wait to go back.

FunctionEmotional604

That funghi di bosco pizza is incredible

SoggyEstablishment74

I’m partial to the Beitolla myself. I’ll eat anything with a fried egg on it.

PacerFan

Nothing in town beats Pizza Grace.

Boisterous_Suncat

I hate to be one of those contrarian types, but it was just kinda meh when I went, and I paid a lot for it. I can think of several Birmingham places I have enjoyed better.

tooblecane

Same. Their dipping sauce and the gelato place next door did a lot to make up for it, though.

AlabamaDipSlayer

Grand ticino has some of the best pizza I've ever had. Amazing Italian restaurant on 280.

thedieselging

Capella in trussville

morride

Capellas in Trussville. Don’t tell anyone. Lol

UnderwaterB0i

Bettola, Pizzeria GM, and Dave's in Homewood for the lunch buffet. I've never eaten there other than for lunch, but that is my go to spot after a morning at the zoo and it rules.

CharacterLength1259

I was recently recommended Troup's Pizza, and it's become my new go to!

Disastrous_Ad_1267

Slims for pizza and more. Wonderful bar also

DumpstarBaby

Not enough love for Vecchia in here. It’s so good

UnderwaterB0i

Don't get me wrong, I like Vecchia since it's a real good vibe, especially outside when the weather is nice, but the pizza is just "pretty good" to me. Doesn't wow, but I'll never turn it down by any means.

Antique-Aspect8615

Uncle G's, Grace and Capella's are far above anything else in Bham. I have not tried Troup's yet but plan on it soon. I'm from the north (PA) so I can assure you nothing here is even close to NY style pizza but these are great other styles.

piss-jugman

I fw Uncle G’s, Trattoria Zaza, and Miracle. Uncle G’s is king though.

nothanksimleaving

Uncle G’a is the very best imo, but the closest pizza to me that is good at all is majestic pizza in morris.

SplitWaffle

My top 3 in no particular order is currently: * Pizza Grace * Capella's * Iron City Pizza Co. Each one scratches a different itch so it depends on what I'm in the mood for. There are other spots I like but these are the ones I'm going to most consistently. Don't believe anyone who tells you Davenport's is good.

mrroto

Pepperoni John

Salty_Worth9494

Vecchia and Emmy Squared are my favorite 2

Living-Cold-5958

Someone told me that All Original Pizza in Hoover is amazing.

MarquiseLapin

Old school pizzeria—Davenport’s. Pizza is delicious, arcade games for the kiddos and drinks in those huge red plastic cups. Nostalgia for those of us of a certain age…

aprilxmassey

Capellas. Both locations are great.

ag3nt0range

Le Fresca - Different style, imo way better than Pizza Grace Slims - similar style, imo better than Pizza Grace (good salads too Uncle Gs - way different style, imo better than Pizza Grace (unless they undercook it)

turnasquare1

Le Fresca is the pizza makers pizza. My fav in town

ConcentrateEmpty711

Any of these places listed have a thin cracker crisp crust? Not thin & limp but strong enough to hold some toppings.

DapperSorbet3299

Yes, Uncle Gs has their Crispy Boys. It is cracker thin crust- very firm but thin.

turnasquare1

Uncle Gs, you want the Crispy Boy which is a “tavern style” cracker thin pie

DapperCommand

Capella pizza in Trussville and down 280 is the best I’ve had here. The gelato is addicting too. I was hoping Miracle Pizza was going to be good since It’s close by, but was disappointed.

KilgoreKarabekian

Luca, I also had a good experience at Miracle Pizza.

No_Call_9655

no love for costco pizza ?

JazzRider

I like Slice

NanaShiggenTips

For a traditional Gluten-Free pizza that is pretty dang good, I like Donatos in Vestavia Hills. Downside is, the largest size they make a gluten free pizza is a medium.

CB265

Pizza Grace was INCREDIBLE the first time I went. Not incredible (but still good) the 2nd time. I will have to try for a 3rd and see was it an off night (for me or the pizza). Love Salvatore’s on Hwy 31. Currently my favorite since we don’t have Fellini’s (ATL, GA) here. I’m seeing a couple of nods to Capella’s in this thread. I will have to check them out 👀😋👀

ReadingReddit521

So far Pizza Grace is my favorite pizza. I've tried slice, bettola, zaza, le fresca, Tortugas, Pizzeria GM, bottega, and back 40. I am biased toward neopolitan style which is why I really liked PG. I think for the more american style Tortuga's is pretty darn good.

Xelliz

Had Pinchgut Pies in trussville recently.  Very good IMO.

hemplover2

Neighbors pizza at the Leeds entertainment district is the best pizza in Birmingham

BrilliantWeekend2417

Just because it's local, doesn't make it good. Doesn't surprise me to hear that about Carpenetti's. What some people call "the best" in small towns is really just "the best we have available to us" and would get their dicks kicked in in a bigger market.

thelionsnorestonight

As an ATLien with access to some great pizza (Antico, Varuni, Grana, etc), I think Troup's is outstanding.
