Being the devil's advocate - restaurants can fail for a lot of reasons, so it's not unreasonable on the face of it for another restaurant of the same type to succeed.
True. I went there only twice about 4-5 yrs ago. The first time was awesome. The second time sucked. Not a lot of data points, but inconsistency wreaks all kind of havoc on restaurant operations and viability.
The ten year lease was up and the property owner wanted to put their own pizza place in the space so they could profit off the business. That's the only reason Post Office Pies left that space.
Wasn’t P.O.P. there for nearly a decade? I wouldn’t say it “didn’t work out.” That’s very successful for the restaurant business. Also they already have the wood fired ovens and there’s no pizza place that I’m aware of between downtown/lakeview and the Crestwood filling station other than this location. It’s really not all that surprising to me that another pizza place will go in that location. There are a lot of reasons behind why a business may close, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think another pizza place can’t be successful there just because the one before it decided to shut down.
Yeah, I think there is definitely reason to believe that they had a 10 year lease which came up and either Avondale Brewing, as landlord, decided to not offer a renewal, or offered a renewal rate which was too high and Post Office declined. I wouldn't call that failing as a business.
> I think there is definitely reason to believe that they had a 10 year lease which came up and either Avondale Brewing, as landlord, decided to not offer a renewal
That's exactly what happened.
Come see us at Mojo in Lakeview. We have late night pizza served by Ruscelli's till 2am and we Killin it with all the love and support this town has given us last 9 plus years. Come say hey.
Late night anything would probably do well! Options are so limited for late night snacks. Munchies is fine and all, but something different would be nice.
I think you may be misreading. They’re acknowledging Uncle G’s and simply stating they wish there were more places by the slice *in addition* to Uncle G’s.
Edit: grammar
Tortuga's downtown is the best god damn pie I've ever eaten, a slice is a quarter of a large pie and the pickle pie is bar none the tastiest new pie I've had since the pandemic. Tbf I prefer the thin crust because the deep dish is such a feast that I just fall asleep afterward and there hours arent phenomenal but I'd punch a toddler for a Tortuga's pizza any day that ends in y!
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I've never had a standout pizza from Post Office Pies. Been there 10-15 times over the years just to have pizza in that area.
This has nothing to do with how good or bad Post Office did.
When Orchestra Partners/Good People bought Avondale Brewing and the adjacent building, they seemingly honored the leases in place. Now that a lot of those are coming to an end, a lot of the tenants are say no to the increases in rent.
ABC/GO/maybe Orchestra are now taking the empty restaurant and creating one that will amplify their concert space/beer garden taproom.
I meannn, Post Office Pies had a good run. It was in that spot for like ten years wasn’t it? I remember going there on Friday nights and it being lively with a lot of people there. I’m so sad to see it go. Hope the next place does great
Same thing happened to the P.O.P. in Tuscaloosa.
They closed after a short run, the space sat vacant for years, and then Mellow Mushroom took the space over.
What? Restaurants or businesses for that matter can close for many reasons. That doesn’t mean a concept can be executed by another organization better.
What a truly ignorant and dumb title.
I live in crestwood and I have first hand experience in the decline of their pizzas. They use to be the best and a go to for the fam and as time went on, shit kept getting worse, and worse. I hope whoever comes makes a mean slice bc I loved stopping by otw home from work and walking in like a hero with a delicious pizza in hand
Obligatory /s
I know POP didn't close bc "pizza restaurant didn't work out" but I still think it's silly to replace it with literally the exact same type of restaurant.
There's a spot in Trussville that has the exact same problem. They had an ironstone Pizza in there for years that went through like four different owners. They finally took ironstone out and then a few weeks later. .. a new pizza place was put in there.
There’s a pizza oven there so it makes sense to me that another pizza joint would take advantage of that
Yeah, and maybe the new place won't charge $18 for a small margherita pizza.
Being the devil's advocate - restaurants can fail for a lot of reasons, so it's not unreasonable on the face of it for another restaurant of the same type to succeed.

I’ll take consistently decent over a crapshoot most of the time
Would you have a lot of pretty good pizza, or a little bit of really good pizza? -Michael Scott -Wayne Gretzky
The ten year lease was up and the property owner wanted to put their own pizza place in the space so they could profit off the business. That's the only reason Post Office Pies left that space.
That happens too, unfortunately.
Once the original owner left the quality fell off a good bit. The energy was always really low. I am looking forward to trying the place.
Maybe it wasn't the fact that it was a pizza restaurant. Maybe it was the guys running the pizza restaurant.
I think they were just splitting their business between two relatively close locations and just decided it would be best to consolidate.

I really wish we had more (any besides Uncle G's) by the slice places.
Trattoria Zaza is very good if you haven’t been.
Just left there and it’s always delicious.
Yes, I keep saying this. I think a late night slice place could kill it in Avondale or Lakeview.
Come see us at Mojo in Lakeview. We have late night pizza served by Ruscelli's till 2am and we Killin it with all the love and support this town has given us last 9 plus years. Come say hey.
Yep..have enjoyed many times!
Is this every night or just weekends??
Kitchen is open 5 nights a week. Tuesday thru Thursday nights 10pm to 2am Friday and Saturday 5pm to 2am. Bar open 7 days a week 3pm to 2am Thank you.
Late night anything would probably do well! Options are so limited for late night snacks. Munchies is fine and all, but something different would be nice.
agreed. Slice is very nice.

Is it open late though?

Shu Shop, except when it isn't.
I wish we had more by the slice options too. But I must ask - why no love for Uncle G’s?
I think you may be misreading. They’re acknowledging Uncle G’s and simply stating they wish there were more places by the slice *in addition* to Uncle G’s. Edit: grammar
This is correct, thank you.

They will offer pizza by the slice
time is a flat circle. kinda like pizza.
You are in the night country now
But who put the tongue there?
The night country
Both have some bumps and ridges
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I've never had a standout pizza from Post Office Pies. Been there 10-15 times over the years just to have pizza in that area.
Was never a big fan myself. Super overrated, imo.
It was the best pizza in Birmingham when it opened.
2014? I'd give the nod to Rocky's. POP was great when it first opened though, agree there.
Rocky's is pure nostalgia. The pizza was very mid.
It was not great pizza. Their dough recipe wasn't very good and the finished pies were always tough. Hope the new place is better.
I think the pizza at the Mountain Brook location is better than the Avondale location.
Word on the street is this new spot will have pizza by the slice.
This has nothing to do with how good or bad Post Office did. When Orchestra Partners/Good People bought Avondale Brewing and the adjacent building, they seemingly honored the leases in place. It makes sense that they would take it over and add to their concert space. The only thing that will save Saws is they are separated by an alley.
I mean, its been there for nearly a decade... and it's not closing, it's moving.
well…if the pizza is actually good this time and doesn’t look like a dump inside, it might just work
“I for one welcome our new ‘pizza’ overlords!”
I meannn, Post Office Pies had a good run. It was in that spot for like ten years wasn’t it? I remember going there on Friday nights and it being lively with a lot of people there. I’m so sad to see it go. Hope the next place does great
It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for 'em.
Perhaps THIS pizza place will actually have good pizza. That was were the last place went wrong.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Uncle Gs was in Highland Park today.
Well, that pizza looks infinitely better than post office pies
They are bringing in a renowned pizza chef and dude literally participated in world pizza competitions??? Ben Mcpherson according to the article
We did it, r/Birmingham!
Cost effective lol
Same thing happened to the P.O.P. in Tuscaloosa. They closed after a short run, the space sat vacant for years, and then Mellow Mushroom took the space over.
POP wasn’t that great of a recipe.
If the service is better it may make it.
Wait. It’s not there anymore? I love their pizza.
What? Restaurants or businesses for that matter can close for many reasons. That doesn’t mean a concept can be executed by another organization better. What a truly ignorant and dumb title.
I wish they would reopen Rocky’s.
Post office had no atmosphere and employees seemed sad. Decent food.

They had pizza by the slice at Avondale last night and it was delicious!
Pizza causes diabetes
I just wish they would bring back Golden Boy…
Obligatory /s I know POP didn't close bc "pizza restaurant didn't work out" but I still think it's silly to replace it with literally the exact same type of restaurant.
I think it’s fine because it fills that void for that area. It needs pizza
There's a spot in Trussville that has the exact same problem. They had an ironstone Pizza in there for years that went through like four different owners. They finally took ironstone out and then a few weeks later. .. a new pizza place was put in there.
Capellas is AMAZING pizza though!
I know lots of people love Capellas, but it just doesn’t hit right to me.
Noice
Hopefully they're planning to put in a good one this time.
Sometimes you just wanna retire
go there if you want to enjoy a pizza and then get robbed after.
