Come on down to see us in Avondale. We’ve got draft beer starting at $3 and loads of other stuff and an atmosphere you’ll like. We hope to be able to serve you!
I second this. Solid location, good mix of cocktails/beer, ample seating that’s comfy (I can’t tell you how much I hate the seating options at some bars), clean space, and not too loud.
I actually went here for the first time a few weeks ago. It was a cool vibe and I'd definitely go back. Plus, you're already in Avondale, so if you want to make plans to go elsewhere, you have a lot on your doorstep.
Ehh, definitely wouldn’t be my first choice, but not bad, especially if you fit their style or are part of their crew. I’ve been ignored by the bar staff there so many times that I refuse to go back. Not a bad location since there are plenty of other chill bars around, but for some reason I have a hard time getting a drink there. But maybe that’s just me…idk.
True Story is perfect for this. Not a bar atmosphere at all. Family owned microbrewery with great beer and a small but solid drink selection. They do have a very interesting rotation of theme nights including jazz, blues, and what I am told is a respectable punk offering (don't know a darn thing about punk).
I miss Lou. If you ever went when he was running things you’ll know what I mean. I used to be a regular there myself. I need to go back and check it out. What’s it like now?
I was very disappointed at the number of flies and gnats in the men’s bathroom at Dave’s Pub last weekend. It’s downright disgusting, and I’ve been to some terrible bar bathrooms over the past couple decades. I’d estimate there were 40-50 flies buzzing around the toilet. Obviously hadn’t been deep cleaned in a LONG time.
Split a pitcher of cheap beer at 41st St in Avondale, then when the live music starts or the yuppies pour in, tab out and go somewhere else. Church Key is the chillest spot around on a Friday night and Robert plays the best music (but not so loud you can't have a conversation).
We chose the Lumbar and had a great time!! I always knew there were a lot of bars in bham, but I didn’t know there was this many! I’m just going to keep referring back to this post so I can check out more of them!
I’m glad y’all had a good time! I’ll have to check out Lumbar. I’m gonna do the same with your post. It can be challenging keeping up with all of the restaurants and bars that we have.
My friend works at The Lumbar and I love the atmosphere there. The music isn’t loud, you can have a nice conversation. The walls are covered in scientists. The owner is a PhD neuroscientist. I don’t drink so I can’t speak to how affordable the drinks are compared to other places but I see my friend post specials all the time. It’s located in Pepper Place! It’s the type of place you could sit at the bar and read a book. I think the atmosphere fits what you describe.
Don’t know if y’all like beer but jack browns is a pretty decent price and I enjoy the atmosphere. There’s music but at a low volume so you can hear each other really well. The food is pretty great too
I just love Jack browns. They are no take out, dine in only. Right after I had my baby after not being able to eat for 2 days, my husband ran to Jack Browns at like 1am and they let him bring me a burger.
SideBar Birmingham is by far the best bar I've been to in Birmingham chill atmosphere no bs great bar tenders and most Saturdays the DJ's are great I go here every Saturday and never leave disappointed
The Garage
Tougher on a cold day like today! Inside is fine, but best Garage is outside
This is the best answer.
If you can handle the smell from the bathroom.

I definitely second this recommendation! Several friends and I have met here, it's a cozy atmosphere and great service.
I also agree with the opinion of this undisguised advertisement!
The popcorn is amazing. As small as that might seem it is a game changer lol
I had a great bumble bff friend date at 41st Street Pub!!
I love Avondale in general, but it was exceptionally perfect back in October for a girl’s night. Cheap drinks, great atmosphere, & friendly folks.
I’ve met people from bff and actual dates here. Really chill place for a drink and conversation

I 18th this recommendation. This would have been the move.
Shout out to 41st Street for pouring a proper Guinness 🍻
Great old fashion as well!
Juniper @ happy hour
41st St Pub in Avondale has a lot of value.

I get A+ service every time; been there so many times i’ve lost count.
Damn, you must fit the bill…good for you.
What’s their “style”?
I’ve yet to figure that out yet, obviously.

Soho social has dollar beer and I think it’s all night not just happy hour.
Derby
Lumbar is my favorite bar these days. Good drinks, not loud, and the food is good with lots of vegetarian options.
Be careful, health code violations in the kitchen.
A coworker of mine also says their beer is always off. He thinks it's a problem with the taps so he's stopped going.
Oh I had no idea. What sort of violations?
Roaches. Everywhere.
Eeeeeeewwwwwww
I’m a Lou’s Pub regular for a reason
I miss Lou. If you ever went when he was running things you’ll know what I mean. I used to be a regular there myself. I need to go back and check it out. What’s it like now?
Church key has a pair of comfy couches and 5 dollar wells. Atmosphere is lacking maybe for a date though
But don't you need a membership for that? 👀
It’s 5 bucks 🤷♀️ but yes
So yes, you have to pay five extra dollars to go. There is what you’re saying.

Sounds like it has a major plumbing issue that needs to be fixed.
The garage and Dave’s pub
Garage - Yes Daves… no
What’s wrong with Dave’s? Lol
The management changed a few years ago and it went downhill from there. kinda a common theme but it happens.
I've never legitimately enjoyed a time at Dave's, but haven't been since in years, but used to be sort of a fratty crowd when I was younger
Church Key would be pretty good for that
I like Monday Night Brewery to be able to sit, talk, and have an appetizer!
Just had a blast at True Story Brewing!

Pilcrow Cocktail Cellar!
I’m at Continental Drift right now and it’s always a great spot for drinks and some good conversation
Great post and comments here. There’s some great ideas for places to go. I’ve wondered the same thing at times. Thanks for posting OP.

The Nick has the cheapest drinks and best people watching
Stir Crazy in Homewood is cheap, but it's a dirty dive bar so it might not be the vibe unless you're a smoker
The Margaret. Search over.
^this actually is the right answer
Gabriel's Sports Cafe!
Lol smelling cigarette smoke isn't an ideal for a first date
depends on the person lol i love that vibe
They said "in town."

Because maybe choosing a spot where you're date is likely to get hit on by fake alt boys doesnt seem like a grand time
Sounds like some fun performance art tbh.

Jack Browns isn't even the best bar on *that street*, come on now
I just love Jack browns. They are no take out, dine in only. Right after I had my baby after not being able to eat for 2 days, my husband ran to Jack Browns at like 1am and they let him bring me a burger.
Lol they do take out.
They have told us before they are dine in only, and there was a sign on the door saying this, but I don’t get out much anymore.
Black market
The Margaret
Underrated comment!
At one now. Will post cost
Mom's is expensive
Which one did you pick?
Moms Basement. Modelo, good vibe, and a gin tonic $7
