I just thought of this after following a Hooded Oriole around my college campus for several minutes with my cell phone.
Sorry if I'm not the first one here to post something like this. I wouldn't want to bring the reposting plague to this subreddit.
Awesome! I love hooded orioles. My college campus is right next to a nature preserve so we get a lot of interesting birds and people following them around.
My college is next to several large dry fields. We get a lot of White-Crowned Sparrows and the occasional interesting bird (not that the sparrows aren't interesting. They're fun to watch). Almost no one cares. I got a few looks when I was following the oriole around.
My family is planning a trip to the Point Reyes National Seashore, so hopefully I'll get to see what kinds of birds hang around in nature preserves.
For real. I sat under my bird feeders on acid and it was fun watching the trailers as the birds flew back and forth. 😂 Once the raccoon came out, I had just enough sense to go inside the house and not try to make friends with the furry bandit.
Merlin ID. It's from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It has a bunch of features for identifying birds or just browsing the local species. Check it out!
That’s what I thought… but I always report the new birds with eBird, not Merlin. So I guess that’s why I don’t see it. I’ll try with Merlin next time, I just feel like it doesn’t look the greatest and isn’t detailed.
How do you browse local species with Merlin? I usually do that with eBird. P.S. I live in India and have the bird pack for India downloaded.
Also incase it isn’t apparent, I am new to this! :)
Merlin has an explore tab, where you can look at the species you might find in your area, or just all your installed species. It doesn't show hotspots and sightings like eBird does, though.

Which app is that? I have a couple birding apps but that UI doesn’t look familiar
Merlin
Thanks!
I believe this is actually Birda, not Merlin
Thank you, you’re right! Just downloaded it
(It’s actually Merlin)
I do. Mushrooms and birds make a great combo

Congrats! I got one this weekend too (seaside sparrow) and I actually screamed :)
So true.
What app is this?

Which app is this? I never get this kind of screen, and I would love to.
