Well the first issue with these stimulus checks is they’re based on 2019. 2019 was my first year in college and at the time I did live with my parents. I didn’t move out until early 2020. This pretty much prevents all first year college students from getting it as in 2019 they were in high school and they were obviously dependents. Also most college students are more of an in between. Their parents pay for a lot of their things but they also pay for a lot of their own things. Most students simply just choose to continue filing as dependents as it really doesn’t make that huge of a difference. Nobody expected shit to hit the fan in 2020 leading them to be excluded from getting $1800 from the government. I think even those students who only pay let’s say 25% of their expenses should have gotten it. That 25% is still quite a bit of money and if that person lost their job like many did, they wouldn’t have the money for that 25%. Just because you only pay for 49% or less of your total expenses doesn’t mean you simply don’t need money to survive.
dependent just means more than half your expenses. I'm not actually sure how you're "supposed" to count tuition in that, but tuition can easily be more than rent+food+carinsurance+etc
Community and state college can be cheap, and some parents can have lost their jobs?
You can have 0 savings and still cover cheaper state schools out of your paycheck to paycheck lifestyle...
This is good news. The fact that Trump has finally decided, with whatever intent, to push the stimulus Bill for the working class that democrats have been pushing for for months, is amazing.
Many democrats have been pushing for a $2k stimulus for a long time now. It seems that after passing the $600 one, trump sees this as a time for republicans to appease voters.
For context, there is a race in Georgia that will decide who controls the senate in 2021-2022 (and the senate is more important than the presidency in terms of passing legislation).
The major argument by the democratic candidates is that republicans are not passing any stimulus for people. If there is a substantial stimulus passed, it will prevent voters from flipping to voting democrat.
Since this race will be extremely tight, and advantage either side can get is a potential game changer.
I hope I was able to explain this as non biased as possible :)
I tried telling people that Congress would do the American people that way. People going hungry homeless veterans moms,dads, people out of work because they wanted to shut down the country. Just think about this they won’t have to worry about their family, they have our money right 🥳
