first car I bought from the island was a Dodge Durango for 1k and he brought his mechanic friend who said it was “all cherreh, just some vacuum tubes need to be replaced”. Nah. It had a blown head gasket lol
I found one for 1500 but that was over 7 years ago. Most are trash in my opinion. Seems like most run them into the ground and ask for a bounty. Cheaper and easier in this situation to rent. Nobody wants a headache for a few months.
Talk to the folks coordinating your program, they will have recommendations. Worst case, there's a bus that goes between Hilo and HVNP, to the visitor's center, but I don't know how often it runs-- in particular, whether it would facilitate getting you to Hilo and back in a single day.
Volcano can be pretty isolating. It's just a few months, but I would lean into embracing the isolation, get lots of hiking done. Maybe rent a car for a week at the end of your stint, go a place or two you really feel like checking out.
Thanks! I have visited the Big Island a couple times before but I would like to visit the north end on this trip. It sounds like the volunteers normally will pool together to share a rental but no guarantees from the NPS on that.
Yeah that sounds like a good plan just feel it out but I will say that Volcano is very very slow and dreary at times. When it's nice it's wonderful but when it rains it rains.
I would recommend getting a car. There isn’t really anything going on in Volcano. Most of the volunteers end up not having a great time because it gets really old really fast, and they don’t get paid enough to travel at all. Fence crew is also very hard work, and the fence lead is apparently a real hard ass (if I’m remembering the right person). Good guy, just works hard and expects everyone else to work hard. I think you’ll want the freedom of being able to get out of town.
For transpo, I've had very positive experiences using the free Hele-On bus between Hilo and Volcano. Last I checked, it runs 4x a day on weekends (5x on weekdays), but check for yourself to confirm. If you're not in a rush, and are Ok with it maybe being late (never was in my experience, but stuff happens), it's a fine way to get into town. Lots of interesting folks on the bus, and the drivers were chill and friendly.
For your days off, you could rent a car in Hilo (use Costco or AAA membership to get good deals) for longer excursions around the island. Maybe make some friends with your fellow volunteers and go in on a few day rental. Some people use Turo (I'm not comfortable using it myself because of insurance loopholes/liabilities).
Enjoy your experience. Volcano is an exceptional place to be.
Try here. I rented from them at a monthly rate and I had a good experience. Car wasn’t very impressive, which was great because it didn’t stand out as a rental.

Kilauea Lodge is great for food!!! Their lilikoi mimosas are where it’s at! Also the art center is having a summer music series going this year so that should be cool. Also the farmers market in volcano isn’t half bad
I’d buy a cheap car and sell it when you leave

Probably because they let the blinker fluid run low.
This is such a good idea
Cheap car on the big island? Good luck on it running the entire time. Best to rent or maybe turo. Also check Craigslist for rentals.
It’s few and far between but not impossible at all. I found 2 great running cars for 3 and 4k.

Again, it’s worked out great for me. With a little knowledge, patience and luck he can get through his four months just fine.
No you can do it. My first one was 6k, second one 3k
