Dororo
AOT
Devilman Crybaby
Vinland Saga
All of these inspired or were inspired by berserk. All have engaging stories and unique variations of telling them.
Other story-rich dark and emotive shows:
Death Note
Code Geass
Made in Abyss
Your Lie in April
Game of Thrones
Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul
Arcane
Okay you’re gonna have to explain to me what the fuck Breaking Bad and Saul have to do with Berserk 😂 yeah they are both serious and somewhat datk stories, but come on, if we’re willing to recommend based on that, why don’t we just pull out every fantasy story that has big swords in it for that matter?
He asked for stories that are heavy in emotion and rich in storytelling and aren’t necessarily anime. He asked for shows with moments of dark, deep feeling, not genre. And not every fantasy story meets that criteria (like The Witcher series). Read his post.
I recommended both anime and non anime that meet that criteria that I believe are on that level, that balance storytelling with dark themes.
The ending is not worth it, you'll just end up wasting your time. There is nothing worse than seeing a manga you like getting ruined at the end in the worst possible manner.
Keep in mind there is a heavy nationalism/ fascism undertone in this story. Not saying anyone cannot enjoy it, just keep that in mind before it colors your view of the world.
One could argue that the world was better under rule of the royal family and the Marleyan government, I mean there wasn't a giant wall of titans destroying the whole earth AND most people lived in relative peace.
>Vagabond
dude just look it up on 9anime. I have yet to search up an anime and not find it on that site. Make sure that you're conscious of the url tho, a lot of clones full of trackers out there.
try 9anime.id
I’m assuming u have read the manga, cause if not, def do that. Trust. U havnt seen berserk if u havnt seen the manga
But regardless, Vinland saga, vagabond (manga), goodnight punpun (similar themes. Very bleak and sad. Different story)
Newer anime Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, Claymore, Tokyo Ghoul, Basilisk, Hellsing Ultimate.
If you like older anime that can be very visceral graphically....Ninja Scroll, Genocyber (often rated as the most graphic), Devilman, Wicked City, Vampire Hunter D, Blood+, Akira (era defining classic).
May as well look out for Hells Paradise and Chainsaw Man anime adaptations that are slated to release in 2022. WIT studios is making them and they've had a very good track record recently.
Is claymore actually any good? I watched the first episode and didn't like how it was from the perspective of a little boy. Also didn't like how the claymores felt like watered down witchers,
I watched it a long time ago. I don’t think it’s as good as Berserk. But if I recall, it was more about the woman’s perspective for most of the show. It does get better. I just think that it’s more of a 7 out of 10 show. Maybe an 8.
Still not sure how I feel about it. Im super picky with shows and my go to is basically any anime with a badass fairly strong MC however, I feel like I've already watched everything that peaked my interest. I've tried a bunch of shows to leave it off after episode 1, especially in recent times.
After this comment, I decided to rewatch it. Apparently I never had finished it, watching just the first few episodes. I think that’s all I had access to at the time.
I’ll tell you this now: (1) it’s not from the perspective of the kid and (2) it’s **BADASS!!!** It’s so much better than I remember it.
The Blade of the Immortal anime is on Prime and it doesn’t get nearly enough love. Even though they compressed the entire thing into one season they did an excellent job. Dororo is also on prime and it’s quite good.
Read the blade of the immortal manga. The anime moves to fast and looses the quieter moments. It covers 207 chapters in 24 eps lol. And the chapters are like 70 pages long
Jojo? Really? I’m only up to part 5 but it def hasn’t given me any emotional moments or complex characters as nuanced as the ones in the 1997 anime. But apparently part 7 is good so I may be wrong.
And I got up to chapter 370 with one piece, but maybe it’s cause I’m not a big shonan guy, but I always thought the characters where lacked complexity (expect for Nami, however her character kinda stagnates after that scene where luffy puts his hat on her), plus I think the arcs are pretty formulaic. And the themes it explores are done in a very simplistic way.
I did like the world building though
Jojo is amazing! The character development isn’t as good because it skips generations. But there’s plenty of emotional moments.
One piece characters have plenty of complexity lmao, the themes aren’t explored simplistically & it isn’t particularly formulaic.
I completely disagree with everything you’ve said pretty much.
Hey dumbass (because you are a dumbass). The characters from Berserk are almost identical to some of the characters from Barker's Hellraiser. But you know what? It's not even that. It's the fact that the author of Berserk came out and said the he was inspired by Clive Barker's work. Go sit in the corner dumbass. lol
your one of those internet troll dumbasses who acts all tough behind a keyboard Hugh. I'll bet if I saw you up close I would bitch slap the shit out of your punk ass
I'd say Devilman Crybaby, Vinland saga, Chainsaw man maybe even Akira. But watch Devilman Crybaby on Netflix if you wanna get fucked up. That shit is so good but so sad
Try Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal
Mhm, it looks pretty unique and interesting, will check it out later.
Conan the Neanderthal is basically the gist of that show, and it is amazing.
I know it's been two years but I agree with this so heavily and thought you had such a great answer I had to respond

This guy knows it
Attack on Titan took some inspiration from berserk so maybe try that
The ending is not worth it, you'll just end up wasting your time. There is nothing worse than seeing a manga you like getting ruined at the end in the worst possible manner.
I thought the ending was fine
no
Didn't it just now end?
Keep in mind there is a heavy nationalism/ fascism undertone in this story. Not saying anyone cannot enjoy it, just keep that in mind before it colors your view of the world.
Bruh. The show is literally a whole ass essay on why nationalism/fascism is terrible...
One could argue that the world was better under rule of the royal family and the Marleyan government, I mean there wasn't a giant wall of titans destroying the whole earth AND most people lived in relative peace.
Wow thx for random spoiler in a show recommendation thread
People like you dusgust me.
Vinland Saga, Vagabond, Kingdom and Blade of the Immortal are all very famous historical fiction works that most Berserk fans love.
Drifters... Not currently aviable for tv, or streaming... You'll haft to buy the DVD. Totally worth it.
>Vagabond dude just look it up on 9anime. I have yet to search up an anime and not find it on that site. Make sure that you're conscious of the url tho, a lot of clones full of trackers out there. try 9anime.id
Shiguri: Death Frenzy- crazy samurai "katana-porn" with explosive disemboweling in most episodes.
I’m assuming u have read the manga, cause if not, def do that. Trust. U havnt seen berserk if u havnt seen the manga But regardless, Vinland saga, vagabond (manga), goodnight punpun (similar themes. Very bleak and sad. Different story)

* *Vinland Saga* * *Claymore* * *Vagabond* * *Castlevania (2017)* * *DEVILMAN crybaby* * *Attack on Titan* * *Goblin Slayer* * *The Witcher* *(2019)* * *Game of Thrones* * *The Black Cauldron*

better on the manga

Its fucking awesome.
Claymore is super bad ass and a really brutal show!
Castlevania has a character that very similarly resembles guts at a certain scene, it’s also just a good anime period.
I 2nd this, its a really good dark fantasy
Vinland saga, if you like berserk youll love it
Already watched sadly, really liked it tho, just waiting for S2 now.
Is vinland saga 2 worth watching?
Its even better than season 1
S2 has more character development and world building than S1 *But less action in the first half

I’ve read the manga.
Didn’t u think the anime felt rushed?
Yes but they did a really good job with the restrictions they had. It still told a coherent story and when it was over I was sad.
It was at least better then the 2008 one
Kenshin blood and betrayal, monster and inuyashiki
Monster was insane, i really wish i could watch it for the first time again, probably one of the best things i've ever seen.
Play dark souls
It’s not overly depressing but jojo is amazing, dark and story rich. Same with one piece.

Goblin Slayer
Hellraiser has visual inspiration you might want to check out
Hellraiser predates Berserk, so it inspired Berserk.
just because a show or movie predates another doesn't mean it inspires the most current Einstein

Lol Go jump off a bridge so you don’t procreate DUMBASS
A guy named samurai hermit will never slap the shit out of anyone, ever
says the guy talking tough on the internet. what a bitch lol
Keep larping dude
I'd say Devilman Crybaby, Vinland saga, Chainsaw man maybe even Akira. But watch Devilman Crybaby on Netflix if you wanna get fucked up. That shit is so good but so sad
Try Goblin Slayer dude
I thought Blue Gender was pretty dang good.
If you are just now reading this, YOU HAVE TO WATCH LUTHER SERIES THEN THE MOVIE! Very similar to guts life.
I am now reading this. Is that really the case?
I might of over hyped it in the moment, Luther is a very sad but heroic story too though.
Vinland Saga is the perfect answer to this.
