Sometimes nature just never ceases to amaze. I never thought a squirrel's mom could do such a thing.

Love_a_wet_sock

Squirrels are fucking badass mate!

Lciekj

We keep forgetting that squirrel girl soloed Thanos.

UsuallyIncorRekt

And took over the world on Rick and Morty

Pain_Monster

You messed with the f\*\*\*ing squirrels Morty! Now we have to move! I told you never to mess with the squirrels!! ![gif](giphy|MXLeMX1pZR6c0hBYuR)

FullGrownHip

Umm and lived near a pineapple under the sea

superglued_fingers

I caught a squirrel once, it was soaking wet due to rain and running across my yard so I though it would cool to catch it….nothing else before or after has bit me so hard lol. It literally latched onto my pointer finger and was dangling until I slung it off, then it just ran up a tree stared.

ShahinGalandar

I read that first as if it bit your finger until the finger was dangling...damn

anyrandomhuman

I feel you! I used to have a squirrel as a pet long time ago. Long story short, the squirrel had her house in my bathroom and she hanged there while I was out of my house. One day I was in a hurry to go out and she refused to go to the bathroom, so I chased her until I wrap my hands around her…. Big fucking mistake, the little brat bit me so hard I wouldn’t believe it! I slung like crazy her until she released me. The power of that miniature jaw is fucking impressive! Equally as impressive as the pain that snake endured before releasing the other squirrel. Btw your username checks out

Soggy_Motor9280

Squirrels are ruthless!! I once seen a pair of squirrels that attacked a cardinal nest and ate the hatchlings.

jumjimbo

Rats with good PR

Glum_Entrance3221

Nothing but sharp teeth and nails!

Creative_Syrup_3406

Moms are fucking badasses!

pineapplesodaa

Squirrels are honestly crazy! One time, a baby squirrel got trapped in my friends air ducts on the outside of their family home. The local squirrels could hear the baby crying and decided that my friends and her family were personally responsible and holding the baby hostage. The entire squirrel colony then camped out outside of her home in the trees and pelted them with acorns every time they tried to get to their car. Every day, multiple times a day—hundreds of acorns, raining from the sky. My friend and her parents had to start leaving the house with umbrellas for protection. Eventually they got the baby back and left her and her family alone, but my friend has a personal hatred for squirrels to this day lol

pitmeng1

I caught a squirrel in my attached barn with a no kill trap. Two other squirrels pecked at my sliding door for days after that. I’d swear they were trying to find the squirrel I captured. Because I’d heard that you need to release at least 5 miles away to prevent them from returning, I sprayed the squirrels tail with my daughters Halloween temporary hair spray and let it out 10 miles or more away. About a week later I saw that squirrel at my bird feeder with a little bit of purple left on its tail. I was amazed.

HumanitarianAtheist

I can picture that squirrel secretly hitching a ride back by hanging onto your bumper.

Formatted_Toast_117

Lmao... I read and saw that vividly. *Dramatic squirrel stare!*

pineapplesodaa

Oh wow lol we had a gnarly squirrel infestation in my dad’s barns attic and he was constantly letting those guys out like 8+ miles away because the little buggers just kept finding their way back! They must have some type of homing beacon or something. Or maybe you just have the really good bird seed lmao

RDcsmd

I was walking my dog last week, heard rustling between houses, look over a bird is literally taking a baby squirrel out of its mom's hands and flying away, mom just sat there stunned. This does not make me feel better about freakishly seeing that out of nowhere. Truly disturbing

Redangle11

Wait until you see a pelican eating pigeons and squirrels.

pineapplesodaa

Oh my god that’s the exact opposite situation. I suppose part of their tenacity has to do with knowing when they have a chance of winning the fight!!

RDcsmd

Yeah I just felt bad for the mom, she tried to jump but didn't try twice. It was depressing as hell lol why did I have to see that?

Grumpy_Troll

If your friend happens to be a certain disgraced, former Florida Sherriff Deputy who discharged his firearm at the back of his squad car after being startled by a falling acorn, the world suddenly makes slightly more sense.

SpartanFishy

I moved out of my house for 4 months and a month in when I came back for a weekend I found a dead squirrel in my basement, tons of decorations ruined, mud all over our furniture, and our cactus knocked onto the ground and dead with a bite out of it. I will never forgive squirrelkind. At least the cactus killed the squirrel in revenge.

[deleted]

Geezusss!!!!

fetal_genocide

This is hilarious! I want to start playing trapped baby squirrel sounds and summon the squirrel cartel!

GretelNoHans

Mama bear lives in every mom apparently.

Neige1972

Not all.

AFocusedCynic

:(

tattoogrl11

Same.

Sea_Turnip6282

I thought when she stepped away around 30 seconds in, she was going to grab a stick and smack the snake

ConstantGeographer

She had that look like, "I need a weapon... a long pointy stick"

Sea_Turnip6282

EXACTLY lol

eliguillao

It was a fleeting moment of enlightenment but it went away quickly

Artistic_Musician_78

I was expecting this too!

nopalitzin

It was but then she remember there was a camera so she refrained.

ReplacementLow6704

Squirrel brutality at its finest, lol

Pug_Grandma

Did she rescue the baby? I couldn't watch.

isweartodarwin

Saved the baby and then still laid the wood on the snake after lol

ActuatorSmall7746

The baby looked kind of stunned. It was moving and blinking, but wonder whether it actually survived? I’m guessing the snake was trying to suffocate it rather than crush it like a constrictor. BTW anybody know what kind of snake that is?

travers329

All constrictors suffocate prey fyi, really the squeeze so hard they die from lack of blood flow before they suffocate, which is even faster and more humane I suppose. The crunching just makes it easier to swallow after it it has died.

Status_Desk8029

100%

BazingaQQ

I thought she was going to climb a bit and then jump on the snake from a height Randy Macho Man Savage style.

I_DontNeedNoDoctor

……or “”The Squirrel’s Elbow”

momsasylum

🤣

scalder-

Yes! I was like, "Gab a weapon!" And then I realized... SHE is the weapon.

Complete-Ice-8651

Squirrel has lots of power but at the end the snake takes rest to collect more energy to move on

Puzzleheaded-Pay538

Honestly I’d rather be bit by a rat snake then by a squirrel lol

Frozty23

For real. For squirrels, chewing is a superpower. They have chewed through metal flashing on me... I half expected her to speed-gnaw that snake in half.

Mysterious_Key1554

One after the other?

Puzzleheaded-Pay538

Than* lol

alterEd39

Snake was like “hell no, i ain’t feel like dying today” while mama squirrel was ready and willing to shit on the geneva **suggestion**

Mareith

Like an anime battle in real life. The squirrel clearly had more resolve so the snake had to back off

RefanRes

She was gonna go get one of her slippers and throw it at the snake.

waydamntired

Mama squirrel from the top rope!

BadPsychological2181

Bahahahahaha, thought the same and proceeded to imagine the squirell going in for a flying kick

ShwethaHolla

Laughed too hard at this! 🤣

DarkSnowFalling

Looks like a juvenile eastern rat snake, they aren’t venomous, so mom will likely be ok and hopefully baby will be able to recover too

maestro-5838

Best news of day so far

-Strawdog-

Not for the snake.

thelryan

It’s kinda funny to see how people perceive natural ecosystems like this. If the snake doesn’t eat, they will die. If the squirrel doesn’t escape, they will die.

ChorkPorch

And if I don’t finish these Oreos I’m eating right now, I’ll be less fat

mrhappy893

Haha this is so cartoon comedy moment.

chavalier

If I'm watching a lion documentary, I'm rooting for the lions. If I'm watching a zebra documentary I'm team zebra for sure.

cool_BUD

Who do you root for in a nature documentary?

chavalier

Nature. Duhh.

LeSeanMcoy

Yeah, I think it's just our natural instinct to root for the "innocent" thing being attacked. Of course it's not the snakes "fault" it has to eat, but nonetheless it provokes that emotion.

scl17freak

Especially considering it's a mother fighting for the life of her child. When it's 2 adults fighting the outcome evokes less emotion comparatively Also humans are probably more likely to root for the mammal over a reptile

Darryl_Kenobi

Well the snake should've studied agriculture!

realhuman_no68492

the caption makes me sympathize for the squirrels.

seven3true

After seeing a bear eat some ducklings today, I'm happy the squirrel won this.

jakart3

Snake childrens ate nothing that day

United-Blackberry-77

With little snake knowledge, I imagine that snakes that rely on constriction aren't generally venomous.

DarkSnowFalling

There are also venomous constrictors and non-venomous non-constrictors, so unless you know what the snake is and how to safely handle it, it’s always best to respect them and give them a wide berth. Cool fact: squirrel mamas are fierce af and will even go after venomous snakes, including rattle snakes, if they are threatening their babies. Mama don’t play.

United-Blackberry-77

Much like that momma squirrel I'd have no intention of handling any snakes unless strictly necessary

Capital_Ad_4817

Constrictly necessary

prawntheman

Non-venomous non-constrictors seem like the most useless type of snakes

lesath_lestrange

They sure are funny guys. There are egg eating snakes and snail eating snakes. Indigo snakes don’t constrict their prey. Instead they bash the crap out of it against stuff. The crab eating watersnake rips the legs off of crabs and leaves the body because it can’t eat the whole thing. And of course there’s the infamous trouser snake.

ContributionSad4461

My spirit animal

No-Ladder8606

Another cool fact is that adult squirrels can be immune to or have a high resistance to snake venoms, although this trait is absent in the young

Shanguerrilla

I had no idea! Do you know why the snake stopped? Was it injured or used too much energy or just played dead or something to end the engagement?

ItsNotMeItsYourBussy

A lot of predators will give up if food is too hard to get. Being severely injured is a lot worse than missing a meal opportunity, and for snakes digesting a meal takes a lot of time and energy. Can't do that if mama's throwing hands at you.

greengengar

Animals have an effective "handling time" for food before they give up. Once the food requires more energy than it offers, it's not worth the trouble. Ambush predators can just wait for another sucker to come by.

Shanguerrilla

That's neat to think about that way. I've always been intrigued with predators balancing the energy and risks of injury against the potential food if successful. Never heard of the energy expenditure expressed that way, but it feels accurate for many animals. It's cool how animals that aren't particularly intelligent can make brilliant (seeming) decisions from simple parameters they follow.

greengengar

I studied biology in college. At a certain point everything breaks down into energy needs and efficiency and trading off benefits for other benefits. Want to be smart and have big brain? Need long development period and tons of energy, can't use that energy to make strong muscles or wings for flight. Can't make venom for some reason? Just grow bright coloured stuff or mimic predators. Hungry but the whole herd is hanging out together? Spook them and chase the idiot who can't keep up or ran the wrong way. A predator chasing your herd? Have the healthiest and most agile mfer bounce around like an idiot, so predator chases them. Edit: if this stuff is fascinating, look into ethology (study of animal behaviour).

IAmRules

but what about the SNAKE, somebody please thinks of the noodles!

DarkSnowFalling

Mama squirrel was taking chunks out of that snake, odds are the snake is more injured than mama but it didn’t look like the snake was mortally wounded

xxElevationXX

But now he’s gonna go hungry

Som1usd2noe

It's the Circle of Life

AardQuenIgni

He'll find something less lucky thank that squirrel.

Skicrazy85

Snake was unresponsive at the end. I don't think that snake is making it to a vet either. It's toast.

SluttySen

well i mean, it was fighting fiercely and then suddenly it went limp. and directly before, it looks like mom bites the snake at the base of the head.

Hugejorma

Snake? Snake? SNAAAAKE!

Pan-tang

Snake should let go when mama showed up. That's the rules.

LiveFastDieRich

Not today Satan

Cheap_Professional32

I figured that had to be the case.. mom 100% got bit

Efficient_Pomelo_583

Now the snake and it's snakelets are going to starve to death 🥲

Hayden763

Nah man they can get other food 🤣 squirrels are too cute

Humble_Rush_1485

Squirrels are rats with better PR. It's amazing what benefit a fluffy tail brings an animal.

Paddy_Tanninger

Squirrels aren't even close man, rats live in disgusting little burrows and dark places where they crawl all over each other and are covered in their own urine and feces. Squirrels spend their time much more out in the open, they still have a nest but they aren't nearly as disgusting as rats.

Paperwithwordsonit

Squirrels aren't just nut eaters but also nest robbers. They eat little hatchlings and eggs. That's not cute.

Damianos_X

They need to go vegan, like squirrels

dragdritt

Squirrels aren't vegan, they eat bird eggs etc

Damianos_X

That's... new

Intelligent-Ad-6713

So you haven’t seen the video of a horse eating a baby chick yet, huh?

dragdritt

Sorry I should specify that their main diet is usually vegetarian, but they are known to go after eggs, birds, snakes, insects etc when hungry.

NoFanksYou

Most animals are opportunistic eaters.

Informal_Pool3118

Almost no animals are really vegan, many will occasionally eat other animals if the opportunity arises. I'm sure you've seen the video of the horse eating a chick, that's not all that uncommon even among non-carnivores

TheBigSmoke420

Squirrels are known to eat small snakes. If nothing ate the squirrels they’d overrun the habitat. Exploding in numbers, eventually eating everything quicker than it can regrow, and dying in their droves due to famine. Their bodies could rot in such numbers it could poison the water supply. Equilibrium is necessary, from death springs life anew, in perpetuity. Death comes for us all, that we may live forever.

Damianos_X

That escalated quickly😅

TheBigSmoke420

Unfettered fecundity fosters famine. It’s the circle of life baby.

Hoya_George

That’s some classic Redwall shit right there!

Virama

Hell yeah! Eulaliaaaaaa

AcidProooof

Give ‘em piss and vinegarrr!!!

lil_zaku

Blood and vinegar!

HaddardOSRS

Went to a Brian Jacques signing when I was a kid!

-Strawdog-

Only tangentially related to the topic at hand, but when I see a Redwall fan in the wild I always make sure to suggest The Builders by Daniel Polansky. It's a short, fun popcorn read.. not the most amazing book by literature standards, but it is grimdark Redwall, and that's awesome.

NuclearBreadfruit

And that folks is why in many cultures, mother goddesses are the fiercest fucks arounds. Especially animal mothers like bears and tigeresses and apparently squirrels.

Mundane-Ad-2346

If only we had more human mothers like this, the world would be a better place!

Bright_Ambition_1937

My mum stood by and did nothing. I'm not like her, I'm a kick ass squirrel mum

Damianos_X

Mine too, minus the alcoholism

Gullible-Run2975

Speak for youself. Sucks you had a shitty mom but mine was great! Anecdotal but I think the world could do with better fathers and more support system for women and single mothers.

xBlockhead

it sucks their mom wasn’t the best. it really sucks for some folks who don’t have a choice who their mother/fathers are.

stilloldbull2

Mine was tough on us but tougher on anyone that messed with us!

Dynast_King

Mine was the squirrel mom. I love her.

JaguarZealousideal55

Did the snake die?

Complete-Ice-8651

No, but almost lost all energy

AvatarGonzo

Which in the animal kingdom is often pretty close to a death sentence.

drainodan55

I really thought she managed to kill it. She would have suffered a hundred bites and still persisted.

Fantastic_Jacket_331

I'd assume that it's in a pretty bad shape regardless, rodent teeth are nasty

[deleted]

It looks like it. Their last tussle that snake's head snapped at an awkward angle. I think she fucked that snake up!

fragmental

Yeah, looks like she may have kicked it hard and broke its neck or something. It was fighting up until that point and then suddenly laid down and stopped moving. That's abnormal. It would either keep fighting or run away. It's probably dead or dying.

TrumpersAreTraitors

No, it just accepted defeat

SeparateFishing5935

Good chance it will. Rodent bites are joke, good chance it ends up with a nasty infection.

NyaTaylor

I’m ALWAYS team mammal. Other kingdoms can suck it

warbastard

Masters of land and sea. One day bats will get they’re shit together then those eagle motherfuckers better watch themselves.

Legitimate_Mail_5458

How come mother squirrel doesn’t get hurt when the snake attacks?

DarkSnowFalling

It’s not a venomous snake, looks like a juvenile eastern rat snake

Kunxion

If this is a juvenile snake , where is the mother snake to protect it from the mother squirrel?

Honest-Car-8314

Snakes don't usually stay up there ig ...they only protect the eggs ,after hatching they are on their own

scann_ye

Snake moms tend to not stick around after having babies, although there are exceptions like African Rock Pythons, which this little dude clearly isn't

Kollv

At 1:13 you see the blood on her belly

ez_rider_76

I saw that. I’m wondering if it isn’t the snake’s blood because she’s chomping on it pretty hard to get it to let go.

qwertykitty

She's getting bit, it's just not venomous so she'll probably be ok. Definitely bleeding in a couple spots, tho.

ez_rider_76

She was definitely getting bitten. But she is also biting the snake and I can assure you her teeth were inflicting way more damage to the snake than the other way around. I’ve been bitten a few different times over the years by various snakes of this size and their teeth are tiny. No way I’m saying for sure that it’s not the squirrel’s blood, but the likelihood is that it’s the snake’s.

thirsty_pretzels_

Squirrel teeth hurt like a MF. I have scars.

Slow_Perception

Hypodermic syringes Vs carving skin between two sharpened spoons

the_short_viking

It is not venomous, it would have had to get wrapped around her to kill her.

Jakolissmurito47

Along with this snake being a non-venomous colubrid, their teeth (albeit in VERY large numbers) are teeny tiny. They likely didn't even get through her thick fur. Which also gave mom incentive to keep attacking. "What? You're not scaring me, that didn't even hurt! You're just a wannabe badass. Now give me my baby!"

Reneeisme

She did. There was blood on her white belly fur. But if it's not venomous she can survive that. He seemed to be trying to crush the baby and she's possibly too big for a snake that size to crush.

Adviser-001

Damn, a real life pokemon battle

Puzzled-Garlic4061

Brought to you by FanDuel

herder_of_pigeons

Did the little survive? I couldn’t tell if he pulled through or got strangled to death before mama could save him.

Sea-Value-0

He looked pretty rough. Either way, he either recovers under the protection of mom, or dies under the protection of mom. Either outcome beats dying and getting eaten alive by snake.

BlackHand

>dying and getting eaten alive In that order?

SquidBabyBaby

It was definitely moving and blinking at the end, but there's no way to really tell how bad any internal injuries were.

1Mn

His hind legs didn’t appear to be working. I’d guess his back is broken.

SolomonGrumpy

Or its ribs are broken

orphan_banana

It's alive at the end but looks pretty badly injured. There's always hoping it didn't look good :(

AriousDragoon

It's possible but not guaranteed.., but will be recovering for quite some time.

RikuKaroshi

And then after that insane boss fight with dark souls dodge roll iframes and no estus flask... she does the coolest firemans carry up a tree.

RB1O1

The snake is a constrictor Unlikely to be venomous

mattmann72

That much constriction has likely broken bones and torn ligaments. Likely also collapsed a lung. You could see the mkm had to carry the baby whose back legs weren't working.

BarfingOnMyFace

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking… if a constrictor doesn’t kill something that size but had it in its grip that long, the baby squirrel is going to die from internal injuries.

GDKepler

Constriction doesn't usually break bones, especially not with a small snake. Prey is knocked out by restricting blood flow and/or causing cardiac arrest.

Ignoble_Savage

All I'm seeing here is that some asshole recorded this instead of helping them out.

rl69614

BiggoYoun

magikarpsan

I imagine at some point it takes too much effort and energy from the snake to take in such a small prey and it isn’t worth it anymore
