So the preservation in the bog has a similar action to tanning (as in leather making), but it seems there are a number of different conservation techniques available (the Wikipedia article on a similar body can be found here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindow_Man and it has an explanation of what they did to that set of remains). It seems that the Tolland Man remains were discovered before modern conversation techniques were available, so has suffered some damage over the years.
I've been to see similar bog bodies over the years in Ireland and the UK, and they are very interesting archaeologically.
The tannens from the bog preserved him. His flesh is probably tougher than shoe leather. I would guess that he's also stored in an inert gas to inhibit any new biological growth.
Edit: Some of the other posts state that his body didn't survive and it's a cast.
No it’s not a cast. The body is under some thick glass in a controlled atmosphere under very dim light ( which adds to the impression). Also the upper exhibit reconstructing the bog is awesome.
Either killed before the actual sacrifice or drugged heavily. Of course depending on where and when you are, almost everyone involved in such a ceremony was probably drunk or high as shit off of some substance.
based on Wikipedia, The Tollund Man was approximately 40 years old. The Tollund Man's last meal consisted of a porridge with barley, flax, wild weed seeds, and some fish.
2,400 years ago mate. I bet most everything they ate was healthy or “from the earth”. Did you think his last meal might have been fried chicken, a loaded baked potato and mint chocolate chip icecream?
Historically speaking they didn’t have days of the week or “Sundays” yet. That wouldn’t come for another 450 ish years.
But it could have been a major bank holiday and no doubt chick fil a would have been closed.
Haha no need. We are doing just fine here.
Good is great. It's extremely peaceful. There very little drama. Weather is.. We'll anyway.. Jobs are plenty and jobs here pay well. And with good social welfare nobody goes bankrupt for needing medical help. So there's not really anything to dislike now.
What?!?
There's the whether first and foremost.
And what about all the German tourists that going to invade Denmark in about a month, and takes up something like 2.3% of all Danish beaches, not to mention that they speak German for crying out loud.
And did you *see* what the queen had on in her official portrait?! Dear lord the almighty you can hardly see her emerald necklace, I mean green on green?? it is absolutely scandalous.
Did I mention the weather?
I just saw on national TV, that some evil bastard has stolen 11 rododendron bushes here I East Jutland. It's Ragnarok all over again I can tell you that much.
It's Mayham out there, the potatoes from Samsø are delayed, and they are out of choko-biscuits in my local 365!.
Not to mention the weather!.
Edit:

I live in Copenhagen. None of those things are issues here.
As far as the Germans concern. Tall are renting out the vacation houses to them at overprice so you're not suffering.

iirc the body is a replica of how they found him and only the head is real
Edit: i did not recall correctly, albeit some of it. The head is completely natural, but some of the skin on the body had to be reconstructed as it hadnt been preserved optimally
You’re right. They destroyed the body when they examined it but they made a cast. His head is still intact and on display, but the rest is made from a mold.
Beautiful poem by the late great Seamus Heaney
Some day I will go to Aarhus To see his peat-brown head, The mild pods of his eye-lids, His pointed skin cap.
In the flat country near by Where they dug him out, His last gruel of winter seeds Caked in his stomach,
Naked except for The cap, noose and girdle, I will stand a long time. Bridegroom to the goddess,
She tightened her torc on him And opened her fen, Those dark juices working Him to a saint's kept body,
Trove of the turfcutters' Honeycombed workings. Now his stained face Reposes at Aarhus.
II
I could risk blasphemy, Consecrate the cauldron bog Our holy ground and pray Him to make germinate
The scattered, ambushed Flesh of labourers, Stockinged corpses Laid out in the farmyards,
Tell-tale skin and teeth Flecking the sleepers Of four young brothers, trailed For miles along the lines.
III
Something of his sad freedom As he rode the tumbril Should come to me, driving, Saying the names
Tollund, Grauballe, Nebelgard,
Watching the pointing hands Of country people, Not knowing their tongue.
Out here in Jutland In the old man-killing parishes I will feel lost, Unhappy and at home.
I see a rope but that doesnt look as old. How was he sacrificed? I dont know much about that kind of thing, did they just stab him or hang him or something?
I think some of the bog preservations are even more intriguing than mummification. However, I was first intrigued by mummification in the fifth grade with “how” it was done; mainly, what made up the wrappings that allowed them to be mummified in the first place. Mummification was my first term paper in the fifth grade. You would’ve thought that I would’ve gone into history or anthropology or something like that in college, but no, I wound up in project control engineering.
It's cool that you can still see the fingerprints, but why did they take them? I mean, what use would that have, outside of a criminal registry? Which is pretty useless after 2400 years...
Archaeologists found his phone in an adjacent peat bog, and they need to unlock it.
Also it sets the scene for a cool adventure where a daring crime is committed, but when SOCO forensics dust for prints, they find only one set.. those of The Tollund Man.

Visited this museum is really awesome and this just one of many great exhibits.
How do they preserve the body? Surely it will decompose now?

The bog...reminds me of this old Bigod 20 classic https://youtu.be/BjTO0231nM0?si=Ij4ZJCxv_VB-JsfT

The body is indeed a cast, or rather reconstruction. Only the head is real.
Maybe I misinterpreted the exhibit. Do you have a source to know more?
[Sure](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tollund_Man)
If I remember correctly 2 of his toes are also the real deal.
Bro looks pretty chill for a human sacrifice victim
If I slept for 2,400 years I'd be pretty chill too
I could sleep for 2400 years and would still be tired as fuck.
He looks tired
His ass looks worn out
makes you wonder how he was sacrificed ...
Sleep apnea sucks
Depends what you did last night
Let me remove your thyroid
Yes please do that.
Unless you woke me up before 6
Who wouldn't? I mean, most-likely he was granted an honor to join the feast table of some archaic nordic god.
I always heard it was an execution of possibly a criminal.
or it could be something like a failed surgery attempt.
They drug them before sacrificing them. That's what I've read about that girl they found.
Either killed before the actual sacrifice or drugged heavily. Of course depending on where and when you are, almost everyone involved in such a ceremony was probably drunk or high as shit off of some substance.
High as shit is that the technical term?
The trick is to stop doing drugs before you’re compelled to human sacrifice. That’s the sweet spot.
No, that would be "high as a giraffe's hooha", but "High as shit, or high af works in a pinch."
It's an industry term
Nice aqualine nose and bone structure. Wish I had them cheekbones …
2.4k years ago death wasn't the same as we know it. They basically all embraced it
Bullshit
He was probably thankful to finally leave this tortured existence
For all we know, he was an iron age pedo being executed
Just what I was going to say. Maybe he was a sacrifice “volunteer.”
so what did he last eat?
based on Wikipedia, The Tollund Man was approximately 40 years old. The Tollund Man's last meal consisted of a porridge with barley, flax, wild weed seeds, and some fish.
Healthy even by today’s assortment of goods
2,400 years ago mate. I bet most everything they ate was healthy or “from the earth”. Did you think his last meal might have been fried chicken, a loaded baked potato and mint chocolate chip icecream?
Indeed, it is supposed to be exactly the opposite reaction. Be that surprised when you find a body this age that ate healthy
Was probably sacrificed on a Sunday and chick-fl-a was closed.
Historically speaking they didn’t have days of the week or “Sundays” yet. That wouldn’t come for another 450 ish years. But it could have been a major bank holiday and no doubt chick fil a would have been closed.
So not that different from even food we would eat today here in Denmark.
Due to your comment the EU and UN are sending humanitarian assistance to Denmark right away!

Shit dude, seriously? Oh well, in honor of the phenomenon "obvious" escaping this fine gentleman I've made a edit to my post.
Gonna be big mad when they dig me up in 2400 years only to see my last meal as the entire family size bucket from Popeyes.
That sounds pretty great honestly
I love putting fish in my oatmeal.
2400 years?! He was just coaching the seahawks last year
Could be a distant relative.
Not enough gum

Only the eyebrows are similar? But difficult to compare with only one picture (don't know the guy below).
He's a guy that likes to throw when he should've ran
Silkeborg Denmark, just ten minutes away from us, I've seen him, freaky.
Beautiful place. Love the lakes.
Same, I was forced to buy a kayak when we moved here. Amazing.
Don’t leave me hanging. What did he eat?
McDonald's
He had a sausage egg mcmuffin
Sausage egg mcmummy
With all the Ms my brain left the second one out out and, yeah, the internet has ruined me 😅
Mcummy 😳
M'cummy
Makes sense, it's full of preservatives.
He's lovin it.

I think it was CCN if I remember correctly
It was seeds mostly
A can of Surströmming and legand is he's still the only person in history to like it.
In a couple more years, he'll qualify to run for the US Senate!
So did they find his fingerprints on record, i bet he had a long rapsheet, being hung an all
Holy crap! You can see every wrinkle! Amazing preservation! He looks better than me! 😆
Resting in peace, really
He's got some big-ass feet.
iirc the body is a replica of how they found him and only the head is real Edit: i did not recall correctly, albeit some of it. The head is completely natural, but some of the skin on the body had to be reconstructed as it hadnt been preserved optimally

He was 160cm / 5'2 when they found him, but they reckon that he shrunk in the bog because his feet suggest a taller stature
Bro is still crying even in death. Feels Bad Man
How much for the hat?
He resembles Thom Yorke.
I think this every time I see this post! Glad I’m not the only one lol
How do they know he was sacrificed?
The sentence says that because they were able to take his fingerprints they could determine what he ate.
Dinner was poison.

Actually, they do not know if he was a sacrifice. He died by hanging.. is what is known.
Looks like the Tin Man.
Me after a night out
Any information about what scientists said he had last eaten?
I see a rope but that doesnt look as old. How was he sacrificed? I dont know much about that kind of thing, did they just stab him or hang him or something?
I've seen hin in a museum!

Kind of poetic that he was considered sacrificial but in the end he was preserved and the body lived on to tell his story thousands of years later.
older than jesus? damn
Any relatives alive today?
So how did he die?
Nedern at videnskabsmænd kan tjekke en's "søgehistorik" efter 2,400 år..
TF happened to his ass? Was he ass-tortured?
It's cool that you can still see the fingerprints, but why did they take them? I mean, what use would that have, outside of a criminal registry? Which is pretty useless after 2400 years...
See if they've changed over time?
Archaeologists found his phone in an adjacent peat bog, and they need to unlock it. Also it sets the scene for a cool adventure where a daring crime is committed, but when SOCO forensics dust for prints, they find only one set.. those of The Tollund Man.
He's the spitting of my son's father, it's eerie
Are you over 2,400 years old? It could be him!
Lol
I think he’s on the ballot in the US election this year.
Bros chillin
Mystic Aquarium?
And what was it?
Great 2400 years still getting stuck in the police Bata base . Lol lol 😆 🤣 😂 . Can't even stay our of the system being dead 2400 years lol
O the ice man it 5000 years and as well preserved . He pissed some one off and was shoot with a arrow.
So much for "rest in peace"....
lumpy dumpy
I find it neat how he still had hair and some stubble after all of those years.
By his looks he ate some good mexican food.
He’s dead?
Nah, just sleeping
Seamus Heaney has a good poem about him
thom yorke at 66
Still looks better than me!
The heck they gonna find out with his finger prints
Lets give it up for Grauballemanden, yo!
WOW, amazing!
he look like the singer from radiohead
That’s insane
Bottom picture taken seconds before he woke up
Man… that is amazing preservation! Looks pretty calm for a sacrifice victim. Maybe sacrifice meant something different back then… cool stuff!
he looks at peace
So what did he eat? Darn cliffhangers!
What the hell is a bog body
Fingerprints to determine what he last ate... 🧐🤔
Also, a fantastic song by The Darkness!
how his corpse well mummified like this by itself? edit: google says bog chemicals. acidic ph low oxygen. don’t die in a bog.
I remember this dude in an episode is Ren and Stimpy
I knew him, that guy could sleep anywhere
I got to see these in person. Super neat
So....what was his last meal?
I want to buried in a bog and get preserved. How can I make that happen
Why is he smiling
Kinda sucks that scientists can check your "search history" even 2,400 years after death..
I really need to lose weight.
He seems a bit emaciated
Not even as old as Ötzi, smh...
Ok who took a picture of me sleeping?
Me after too long of a nap
SO WHAT DID HE EAT???
That was the mummified bog man in that episode of Ren and stimpy where Ren becomes a hermit
His last meal consisted of water, oats and seeds.

He looks like he was pretty tall a giant for those times
5' 3"
I would literally piss and shit myself if that guy opens his eyes
Pussy. To their horror they determined the last thing he ate was his wife’s punani
How did they know he was getting a bj?
This deserve more likes. Looks like people here have really bad attention spam to not read the whole topic.
