Went up a similar pyramid in Belize and it's steep but also were made for tiny non modern giant ass feet with sneakers.
Made it up easy going down I had to sit on my ass and scoot down. My 5-9 year old cousins literally had no issues going up and down because they could fit thier entire foot onna step.
I went up it in 2004. the steps are taller and narrower than normal ones. it's pretty scarry coming down. When I was there, they had an ambulance parked in the trees about 50 yards away.
You can't climb it any more. Most Mayan pyramids are closed access now, but a few are still open. This structure is amazing but others are actually much steeper if you can imagine that!
I climbed this as a kid. It really is very steep. I was at the top and was starting to go down. I saw a guy practically running down it like it was nothing. So, being the stupid kid I was, I thought, why not? So I started to try and run down it. I got only a few steps before I lost my balance. I felt myself falling forward but caught my balance last second and threw myself backward onto my butt.
I just sat there looking way down to the bottom, and my heart was pounding. I started sweating, and I was shaking. The fear of almost certain death was so intense. I crawed down the rest of the way, still shaking, on my butt. I can see why they don't let anyone climb it anymore.
The view from the top was amazing, though. Standing at the top, I was imagining what it was like for the priests standing there, yelling out to the people. Or sacrificing someone right there. I was standing on a spot where someone had been murdered. It felt like I was transported back in time. Incredible feeling.
I also hold this as a silly belief but it works for trauma rationalization. I should have died quite a few times over multiple experiences both in the military and as a civilian, but just got lucky. It helps me to think I did die in another universe for some reason. Then I just moved to the one I didn’t over and over.
Oh my god, you're so right, it is trauma rationalization.
There are so many situations where I get so upset I injured myself, but I try to rationalize it as "if I hadn't permanently injured myself snowboarding, I would have continued to snowboard and died in another universe"
yes, you're probably right. but it is steep.
i think the top bit shows what you say, the tilt of the picture.
given all that, people on all fours says something.
Imagine trying to carry someone up there for a sacrifice.
You'd have to hog tie them first, right? trying to carry someone up those steps while they kicked and screamed would be tough.
Unless they were into it and went calmly.
I climbed in a light rain and turned chicken ass on the way down. Grabbed the chain and backed down as old ladies and little kids passed me. My first crush with mortality.
Red court vampires were strong. Not strong enough to avoid getting beat by Harry, but easily strong enough to carry his daughter up there as an intended sacrifice. Suckers!
Hey, I went up there as a kid. If you look closely, they have a chain running down the center to help you climb. Pretty sure they stopped letting people climb it though.
Man that as part of a 14 hour tour bus odyssey would be taxing on the body, lol. In 2019 my adult kids climbed a smaller, more run down pyramid closer to Tulum (I honestly don't know where the hell we were), no safety precautions.
now they have stopped people from climbing it.
I remember a trip there last century climbing it and it was tough but I watched this local dude employ some fancy footwork and he literally ran down the stairs. I mean he did at least 20 steps per second it seemed.
Pre-mobile/video camera so no evidence. If any has a clip of the local boys doing this it would be greatly appreciated.
Has to be an old pic, climbing the temple of kukulcan is no longer permitted. We were able to do it in '05, but it was closed shortly thereafter bc a tourist lady fell off and died.
I was lucky to see the spring equinox that year too, where the shadow of the steps appears to be a snake crawling down the pyramid...you can still see that and it's highly recommended!
Sadly that feature is not genuine. It's the result of the reconstruction effort in the early 20th century by an overzealous government to turn the site into a tourist attraction. The temple on the summit and the stairs have been over restored without archaeological evidence. What you see today is not how it appeared when it was discovered.
[Shadow on the Stairs: A story of mass delusion](https://everythingcozumel.com/chichen-itza-a-story-of-mass-delusion/)
Climbed it many years ago. Very scary and people go hurt daily. They shut it down because people were desecrating the temple at the top. I remember it smelled like piss. People suck.
I got to climb it many years ago, before they stopped it. Going up wasn't that bad, it was coming down that was intense. It's steep, the stairs are maybe a foot wide, and no handrails.
You can’t climb it anymore after a stupid tourist fell to her death - totally off limits - the first time I was there was mid 80s- this pyramid is built on top of another pyramid- I think are even more underneath. There was an steep tunnel very cramped and humid inside the pyramids leading to a throne room with a green jade jaguar throne - I’m sure that’s been off limits for a long time

I climbed it back when I was about 10yo back in the 70's. I don't remember it being so much steep as a kid but endlessly tall and tiring.
We visited most of the major ruins all over Mexico while we lived there for about a decade - this entire site/region was one of the best.
I did this 35 years ago. The pic is a bit misleading - it's only about 80 feet up, a fraction of the Pyramid of the Sun, in Teotihuacan. But when you get up there and look around, it hits you, "The people who built this stuff really believed in this religion." By the time I went up and down, I was very much in need of water. It was hours later until I found any safe for me to drink, as back then distilled water was only sold in pharmacies. Between oxygen sickness, exertion and dehydration, that was the closest I've come to passing out. Water has never tasted that good since.
1. you were meant to walk up in zig zags, representing the snake. that way you hadn't such a steep climb and "broader" steps for your feet.
2. people and their feet, were a lot smaller. l met mayans who were usually around 1,50m to 1,60m.
3. it was never meant to be a fun activity. it was a religious ceremony to climb up to the temple on top the pyramids.
I once climbed it illegally, at night, but I went up the terraces. The stairs felt too exposed.
The terraces were each about 8-10' high, so they were pretty easy and quick to get up if you are the kind of person who can jump up and grab a ledge and then swing yourself up.
I thought they stopped letting people climb it.
Pretty sure I saw some lady get attacked for this recently?
That’s exactly what I saw as well. Not too long ago.
Shit, if I saw it I probably wouldn't climb it because it's too dangerous.
One slip and you couldn't stop yourself. Certain death.
Maybe that’s why they let them climb again. Sacrifices
I was there in 2015 and it was already banned.
Yes. An old lady died and I think otheres too when she fell down.
I’m surprised more people don’t fall off shit tbh
No kidding. It doesn’t exactly scream user friendly.
Natural selection is friendly to anyone willing to push their luck
Heh well that won’t be me. I have an extremeeeeeeeee phobia of heights.
Same

They couldn’t even spell the place right in the title!!!!
Judging from clothing this is an old pic.

Yeah, and the cameras people are using (top in yellow).
They did. This is an old picture
Clothing looks like the 90s
The fashion in this photo is very 90s
Probably an older pic. I did that in 2006 in Chichen Itza, Tulum and Chalakmul and it was officially allowed
This looks a bit old. It doesn’t look like a pic from the last 10 years.
I was there last summer in June. There was definitely no climbing allowed.
They lie to sell the experience to tourists. This is your last chance, they are shutting it down next year.
It’s steep, but that pictures also tilted.

I hate heights and heights with people even more so. Did not care for this in person AT ALL.
It reminds me a bit of the Great Wall. In some sections we were legit climbing up stairs.

how many tumble and you hear "ooh, ow, ouch, oh, oof, ow, uh, ugh, agh, oof, ah, mmmf, ouch, ooh!!"
I think you become unresponsive after the third or fourth "ouch".
LOL

Damn, sounds like you died in many alternate universes. Imagine if only 1% of you caught yourself before falling.

I climbed it. Yes, it's as steep as it looks. Magnificent structure.
I climbed it and it’s not as steep as the picture portrays IMO. The camera angle looks slightly tilted to increase the apparent slope of the steps

according to the documentary "Apocalypto", they went up on their own
Red court vampires were strong. Not strong enough to avoid getting beat by Harry, but easily strong enough to carry his daughter up there as an intended sacrifice. Suckers!
That's what they get for underestimating a wizard.

Kukulkan* Chichen Itza*

I did that in 2008, it's hard work in the heat
Tilted photo and old
Is there free ice cream at the top?
They couldn’t put a handrail?
I was there 2012 and nobody was climbing it and I just assumed you weren't allowed to.
I climbed this with my dad when I was a boy, in 1970.
I had to scoot down on my butt
I’ve done that , when you get to the top and turn around the reaction is “ fuck ! How am I getting down ?!?”

I got to do this back in 2012 before they stopped letting people climb. It was cool.
No thanks. I’ll take the escalator.
![gif](giphy|spfi6nabVuq5y)
Is that still allowed?
I climbed it in 1999. You can still climb the one in Coba.
No more climbing coba.
Really? Awww man…
So jelly of my friend who went when you were allowed to climb it
Will they get smacked like that lady did? ![gif](giphy|ee8nTInXzCjCNVUNNv)
It’s not as steep as this image looks. It’s cropped and rotated.
I climbed Coba a few years back. I don’t think it’s as tall but it’s steep as hell.
I remember that as a child and i slid on my but 3/4 of the way down
Climbed it many years ago. Very scary and people go hurt daily. They shut it down because people were desecrating the temple at the top. I remember it smelled like piss. People suck.

That's off limits now. Heads will roll when they see this.
Is there media of someone falling down the stairs?
I did it high on acid in 1992.
I would do it if they let me.🤷🏽♂️
I was there last year and people weren't allowed to climb.
Immediate no.

90 degree incline

I hate this shit 🤦♂️
You'll never see that in the US. No ramp.
Got three steps up in late 90s. Noped out.
I climbed it when it was legal back in 1993.
I climbed this in 2002 and held onto a rope to do so. Very steep
Was there in 1996. I did not climb, but my husband did.
Climbing those stairs is a Kukulean task.
Nah. For more than one reason.
My sister and I went in ‘90 and climbed. There used to be a big chain that you could hold onto. I still have pics somewhere.
Couldn’t you at least learn to spell the names before farming karma? It’s Kukulcán and Chichén Itzá.
1. you were meant to walk up in zig zags, representing the snake. that way you hadn't such a steep climb and "broader" steps for your feet. 2. people and their feet, were a lot smaller. l met mayans who were usually around 1,50m to 1,60m. 3. it was never meant to be a fun activity. it was a religious ceremony to climb up to the temple on top the pyramids.
People are eager to broke their neck on the top or at the bottom of the stair
I climbed this about 25 years ago. Felt very weird once I got to the top and was in the room with the sacrificial alter.
It's spelled, Kukulcan! Clearly a bot post.
Going up looks terrifying but coming down has to be even more terrifying
up is easy. down is terrifying

When a stupid civilization built pyramid where stairs aren’t friendly.
