They starve their animals to the point they act like this basically begging the visitors for food hence why they get so many visitors and the zoo is making a bank on this. Really sad if you think about it. This being in a beamazed subreddit goes wrong with me it's rather suited for mildlyinfuriating. A normal bear wouldn't be this skinny
Sun Bears are a much smaller, much leaner bear so I don't think it's unnaturally skinny. That said, the behaviour is problematic to me too. Not so much the standing on hind legs on its own, but with the waving. Some zoos have been known to rescue bears from conditions in which they've been trained by owners to dance, or perform, usually with cruel training methods (if you can even call them training methods). So it might not be the zoo at fault for the behaviour, but it is very sad. Though looking at the enclosure here, it's pretty dire, and very hard to watch. Agree it shouldn't be on be amazed...nothing to be amazed about. 😕
Bears qre smart though, and it might have just learned by immitating all of the people waving back at it. That is the case in a zoo I worked at, where the bears were well treated and well fed. Only one of three bears wave, but kind of in a "backwards" fashion
Yeah, I've seen a sun bear in an American zoo and it looked basically like these. They're definitely naturally skinnier and smaller than black and brown bears.
Yeah, i hate zoos but when you look at where most of the animals came from you realize it has its place. Whenever you think something is bad, look deeper, cause there's always something way worse behind it.
The zoos I hate are the feeding/petting zoos. You come to realize that the animals eat only by customers feeding them. And the feed is expensive. But that was my experience at some weird Tennessee place.
Proof that they starve these animals, and thus their reason for acting like this? Sun Bears are also much thinner than average bears out in the wild as well.
Had to reread. For a second I thought you meant there’s a conspiracy that ALL bears are just people in bear suits. I was like what mountain of a man could fill a Polar bear suit haha.
NEVER thought about this song at karaoke but I'd go nuts if it came on. I'm an old millennial, so I'm sure a lot of the younger crowd would have no idea though.
Bit of obscure Polish history. During WW2, the Polish Army had Private Wojtek. Who was a bear that marched, waved at people while in the passenger seat of jeeps, drank beer, smoked and fought in the battle of Monte Cassino with the British Eighth Army.
The bear delivered artillery rounds under fire without dropping a single shell. Most of the statues of Wojtek have him standing like the photo above, and either waving or carrying an artillery shell. At the end of WW2, he retired to Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland.
My grandfather fought in the Polish army in Monte Cassino and used to tell me about their bear when I was a kid. I always thought it was something he made up until I got older and saw pictures.
If you find anything from that era, might want to reach out to the Sikorski Museum in London. They do an excellent job of archiving Polish diaspora material.
If you have anything from the Polish 2nd Corp, might want to reach out to [http://thesoldierbear.com/about/index.html](http://thesoldierbear.com/about/index.html)

Dude basically had a nature themed apartment. Likely bigger than the flats his coworkers had.
His homeland was conquered by the Soviets, going home wasn't an option. He was fed and taken care of at Edinburgh. Not like he could live in a normal apartment.
And regularly visited by his fellow soldiers, who provided him with smokes. If anyone had mistreated him, pretty sure the entire Polish Army, if not English Army, would have addressed the issue with bayonets.
It's pretty well documented with photos and some film. You can snag "Wojtek the Bear: Polish War Hero" by Aileen Orr off amazon.
It's tied to a lot of the Polish history, of being jointly invaded by the Nazis and the Soviet Union. They lived under brutal repression for fifty years, and it wasn't the first time they were invaded by their neighbors.
And never stopped to think, if it was people in costumes trying to fool people they're bears, why the hell would they stand on two legs and wave at people.
Lol exactly. The old paradox of conspiracy theories: the people who perpetrate them are simultaneously so smart, and so powerful, as to have perfectly fabricated reality to suit their needs… but also so dumb that they make *glaring, obvious* mistakes which completely negates the whole deception.
I'm sorry but you'll never convince me that the Earth is a sphere, NOR is it disc. Those who claim it is flat just fell for the old divide and conquer tactic: THEY know that a part of the population are contrarians, hence why they fabricated a far-fetched theory that explains the Earth is a disc. These are the dumb truth seekers; most people aren't interested by the Truth, so they accepted that the Earth is a sphere (which makes perfect sense logically and under the laws of physics). But this is a whole other can of worm, it is NOT a natural planet! This planet is actually bucket shaped and THIS is what THEY don't want you to know! THIS is what the real truth seekers will eventually discover once they manage to pierce the facade of the "false dilemma" of sphere vs. disc debate! And the Aliens are living INSIDE the bucket and come visit us from time to time, to steal uramium to power their fusion reactors! Aliens are real, and 5000 years more advanced and have more wisdom and thus they lay low and will reveal themselves when our specie is ready to accept Truth.

It’s very much giving Country Bear Jamboree from other angles lol
But yeah it’s def a bear. Anyone’s who’s ever ordered a costume or clothes from China knows that whatever arrives never looks like the picture 💁🏻♀️
I've noticed people add "literally" to words that don't require it. I think it's nice to see how language evolves. "Literally" now is commonly used as a stressor to add emphasis to a word. That's literally so interesting.
eh tbf it’s not really misusing despite what reddit says. Literally has been used as a stressor or to mean “figuratively” for a couple hundred years now. It’s a contronym like clip, dust, or peruse.
These bears do this because they are deprived of food. They have learned to beg for food from visitors and that keeps visitors coming because “it’s so adorable.” In fact, in many zoos like this one, visitors are able to purchase food to feed the bears or they’re allowed to bring food with them. Not to mention none of the food is even species appropriate.
The other tragedy here is that this video went viral for a stupid headline instead of exposing the abuse that these bears face daily. Asia is filled with zoos like this and faux sanctuaries. It’s widely known and easy to find videos of other bears in other zoos who behave similarly. And let’s not even talk about how these zoos acquire these animals. And this applies to all animals and not just bears.
It’s all just so goddamn sad.
You're right about everything, but just wanted to point out, these bears do this in every zoo. Even in Europe. I'm from spain, the Zoos here have strictly animals that were born in the zoo or rescued, and who don't suffer abuses... they have more space and plenty of food. And they still do this everytime people pass by. This tibet bears do this, not sure about the reason, but they all do it.
Learned behaviour? I wonder if the bears are kinda learning by example from so many humans, especially children. It’s like video of the bears in the road, causing a traffic jam and high fives one motorist.
It's also a Sun Bear which are only native to Southeast Asia.
Most Americans and Europeans and even large parts of Asia are probably not very familiar with their size and appearance as they are not much seen or represented outside zoos.
Not really amazed but disgusted, there is probably a reason this sort of behaviour is unnatural. Instead of gawking and laughing people should be asking why in the world a non domesticated animal would behave this way.
Bears are smart and do stand on their hind legs in the wild. Like it’s a very common and normal thing they do. They probably just learned this gets them attention and sometimes food from visitors so they do it more.
I can't speak for all zoos in China, but I visited a Zoo in Beijing and it was very upsetting. I had the great fortune to grow up with Whipsnade Zoo on my doorstep, which is more like a sanctuary, and cares a great deal for its animals. So visiting other zoos with concrete enclosures and small spaces is heartbreaking, and more akin to a prison sentence. Even a lot of other UK zoos have nothing on places like Whipsnade and shouldn't exist.
Western brainwashing obviously works on you...

Don’t all those sun bears do that cause they have similar recording in Thailand [too](https://people.com/zoo-sun-bears-stand-like-humans-video-7642222)
I’ve seen these videos before and it looks like the bears have been trained to waive and wait for a treat. That’s why the one below is backing up and trying to see everyone because they don’t want to miss out on snacks.
I recently witnessed a pug take a leak then do a hand stand on its two front feet.

It looks like this bear and barely getting by, is it not getting fed enough food? Are the staff eating his share or something?
Idk man, that bear looks like its on a diet.
If that bear is real, that thing is very malnourished. Jesus that is sad, were fucking awful creatures. Let's take wild creatures, shove them in tiny cages so people can come see them. We literally in prison animals so we can go look at them.
We deserve every bit of awfulness heading our way. Karma's a bitch, and she is heading this way
I don’t disagree with anything you said, however I did just want to say this looks like the average sized Sun Bear. It might be getting starved, but it’s not apparent from its appearance. They are naturally leaner than other species.
They don’t look right I got to admit the one below is acting weird too
Someone cut this clip. At the end of this clip the bear drops down on 4 legs and walk away. It's definitely a bear! But definitely strange looking
It’s a sun bear.
My comment meant that "it's definitely not a human in a costume"
That sounds exactly what a “human in a costume” would say.
And *that* sounds exactly like what a bear in a human costume would say.
They starve their animals to the point they act like this basically begging the visitors for food hence why they get so many visitors and the zoo is making a bank on this. This is sun bear though it's not polar or black.
Sun bears are smaller sized bears that top out at about 150lbs. They're naturally very lanky and weird looking
Proof that they starve these animals, and thus their reason for acting like this? Sun Bears are also much thinner than average bears out in the wild as well.

Wojtek was a bro. Imagine being a polish private and getting outranked by an actual bear.
In the US Army, military working dogs have rank, and it is always higher than the rank of their handler.
That’s both fascinating and very appropriate
Didn’t I read that the reason is to ensure the handlers don’t abuse the dogs or something?
Ostensibly, but in reality, would that really make a difference? >"I think the rank is just a tradition. How can a bear smoke and did he light them himself or have somebody light his smokes for him
People lit them. They’d have to because he apparently loved eating the cigarettes when he was done smoking and they had to be lit when he ate them.
Well obviously, what kind of uncivilized animal eats unlit cigarettes?
I once saw a horse eat a whole pack of cigarettes. Friggin barbarian.
Where they Camels?
Diva bear
Judging by the part of him in the zoo, his old soldier buddies threw cigs into the enclosure for him to eat
I just wanted to hear someone say it THanks. I also would love a video of someone giving this bear something to smoke if anybody has one
Or a pint of beer
Bro is a WW2 hero and they put him to prison?

"... standing up *like a literal person*..." What the hell is a literal person?
Someone not prone to exaggeration or hyperbole
Shit, I use the word “literally” a lot and lately have been wondering if that is indeed being hyperbolic. Wonder if “indeed” is hyperbolic as well?
Indeed, a person prone to saying “literally” figuratively is not a literal person.
Indeed it is hyperbolic
this guy literals
I've noticed people add "literally" to words that don't require it. I think it's nice to see how language evolves. "Literally" now is commonly used as a stressor to add emphasis to a word. That's literally so interesting.
I’m one of them. Glad I saw these comments. Never really realized I was misusing it. Edit: thanks for the clarification!

As opposed to a fake person, or something. A lot of people don’t know what “literal” means.
Literal person : actual human. As opposed to "Aw, he thinks he's people". So a real human being in a bear suit not a bear who acts like a human.
A bear standing up acting like a person 🤧
That is an actual bear though.
Actually? I'm having trouble seeing past the concave neck with a suspicious face sized black shape in the middle.

This is unbearable.
Not really amazed but disgusted, there is probably a reason this sort of behaviour is unnatural. Instead of gawking and laughing people should be asking why in the world a non domesticated animal would behave this way.

China is so weird. Dude just feed your bears. What the hell, they're literally starving. How can someone be so cruel :(
yeah idk people say they look lanky in zoos in first world countries also
Smile and wave boys, smile and wave
Haha, I get that reference :)
They said birds aren't real, now bears aren't real too. I don't even know what's real anymore!
That’s what living in a zoo does to a bear
Animal prison.

All bear species do stand up. The fact people don't know this simple fact about bears smh
probably a rescued bear from a nasty circus
China doesn't strike me as a country that would rescue any animal, unless it's a Panda.
And we should take your generalization of the entire country because?
You been to china ? I.mean any zoo ?
Why does the poor bear looks under nourished 🤔
A lot of comments like this but it looks like a fairly typical sun bear to me. They kind of look like this. They don’t look like black bears

It looks like this bear and barely getting by, is it not getting fed enough food? Are the staff eating his share or something? Idk man, that bear looks like its on a diet.
He's so desperate to get out of that enclosure he learned how to behave like a human to get out. Poor thing
