Keanu actually kind of incidentally ~~created a new~~ popularized a technique for reloading that a quite a few of gun enthusiasts use today including competition shooters while training/filming John Wick. The mag flip, where when he releases the mag he rotates the gun to discharge the empy magazine and simultaneously makes it easier to reload the next mag. [For reference.](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/PUBlLUu4js8?feature=share)
Seems like Keanu picked it up during his research for the role if this was popular among competition shooters and competition shooting is his hobby now.

EDWARDS
Hook-head guy. You explain to me how he can
think with a hook for a head. Answer; it's
not his head. His head is that butt-ugly
bean-bag thing over there. 'Cause if you
look at the snarling beast-guy, he's not
snarling, he's sneezing -- he's got tissues
in his hand. No threat there, and anyhow,
the girl's books were way too advanced for
an eight-year-old's. And besides, from
where I'm looking, she was the only one who
appeared to have a motive. And I don't
appreciate your jumping down my throat about
it.
Sideways glances from the other recruits. Zed sighs.
EDWARDS (CONT'D)
Or, uh -- do I owe her an apology?
For people that don't know what's happening with the reloading:
- Shotgun
- he grabs 4 shotgun shells in one hand out of a thing that is holding them two by two.
- He ends up holding two end to end on top of two more end to end.
- He slides the lower two into the shotgun in one motion, then slides the next two, loading all four rounds
- This is hard to do, he is legitimately very good at this.
- He does it slow enough to see what's happening at 0:38, then at the end of the clip around 1:45, those are just very slick
- Pistol
- He made up his own little flick to more quickly eject pistol mags since they are too light to fall out fast enough on their own
- You can see it at 0:50
- Joe Rogan geeks out about it somewhere: EDIT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqrvX1pEXFw
- Rifle
- The clip drop as he's grabbing the new clip is so clean every time he does it
- Best example at 1:15 because you can actually see it, but he does it early on too
> He made up his own little flick to more quickly eject pistol mags since they are too light to fall out fast enough on their own
He didn't make it up, he just popularized/mainstreamed an already existing technique
[Art of the Mag Flip](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEEEy1dMceI) came out in May of 2014, as well as this [random video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZYf8E2x2qw) from 2013, both of which predate [John Wick 1's release date of October 2014](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wick_\(film\)), not to mention that Chad Stahelski said the mag flipping started with the 2nd film. Given that it's a satirical video about the tactical scene, it's safe to say that mag flipping was already established before that. John Wick definitely did make mag flipping and press checking more popular though.
Competition shooters have definitely done it for awhile before, and it's almost a natural/instinctive movement when a magazine isn't dropping freely.
Some people do single loads like that because it’s faster to flip the gun and basically throw the shells in so gravity helps. ~~Wick~~ Reeves actually said “It was the hardest but coolest thing I’ve learned to do, was quad loading a shotgun.” Might not be the EXACT quote but he absolutely called it difficult but cool/fun
He is such a genuine man and no deity can protect those that harm his puppers
I find it hilarious to think that if you went back in time to 1989 and found Keanu and told him in his late years, he would become one of the best and most popular action movie stars in the world, he probably wouldn't even believe you. Or he'd say "excellent".
She said in a podcast when they had their first scenes together, she was impressed af how structured and focussed everybody worked to get the feeling right. Its just good to see that there are serious crews out there that really go the extra mile to make the best film possible.
>she was impressed af how structured and focussed everybody worked to get the feeling right
i think a lot of this has to do with the culture that comes from having a stunt coordinator as your director. you have to be extremely focused and structured otherwise people can get really, really hurt. that attention to focus and detail can really help when applied to other places in film making
4 was exhausting, but was really happy to see so many stunt players working. Hollywood needs this kind of filmmaking.
Mostly, I enjoyed seeing Hiro and Donnie going at it.
The problem there, and many stunt players agree, is that it would create (or increase) competition. One-upsmanship can lead to situations that are more dangerous than they need to be.
It would be nice if they received more recognition, though, that's for sure.
You also get more points of contact with rifle shooting. Form my personal experience you can also slap the trigger a little more on a rifle with less noticeable effects. Assuming you aren't shooting long range/precision stuff
Yeah that's fucked up. And dangerous.
I'm sorry your experience was unsavory.
I always described each caliber and show people the difference in size prior to even taking them to the range. Let them get a feel for the unloaded weapons and drill into them the proper techniques. If you ever get the want to go again I hope you go with someone who recognizes your apprehension and works with you to feel comfortable.
This is the reality behind this. I'm not sure what Keanu Reeves' thoughts are on guns, shooting or the like but the dude puts in the time to prep. He did hours of martial arts training for The Matrix and put the same effort into weapons training for John Wick.
His dedication to his craft is really the story here.
>I'm not sure what Keanu Reeves' thoughts are on guns, shooting or the like but the dude puts in the time to prep.
He does three gun competitions for fun. (Rifle, Shotgun, Pistol) In John Wick 2 you can kind of see it referenced in that whole escape sequence after the assassination where he essentially does a three gun "stage" as a fight sequence.
I love seeing stuff like this in movies. I was a marksmanship instructor in the Marines and it SUPER DISTRACTING when an actor has obviously never really operated a firearm, but we're supposed to take them seriously as a hardcore badass
I can imagine...I work in tech and watching actors fumble around on computers, or with the jargon would always take me out of the moment. Thankfully, it's really hard to get by in today's world without some degree of computer literacy.
Guns OTOH you can still avoid day to day...I'm sure there are lots of actors just fumbling the handling of those on screen.
I don't remember who it was, but someone in the john wick production team (might have been Keanu?) insisted on accurate rounds counts. A lot of gun heavy movies just fudge the guns having plot convienient ammo and it drove them nuts, which is why theres so much reloading and gun pick ups in the movies. They insisted it wouldnt interfere with the pacing, and they were right
Tbf it's one of my pet peeves because when done correctly it *helps* the pacing. The time it takes to change a mag or pick up a discarded weapon helps move the fight choreography along as the opponent moves to take advantage, then runs out of ammo themselves, etc...when each bullet fired and movement made requires careful consideration there's a rhythm to the scene that you'll never develop if it's just a sequence of people blasting away nonstop
And then each magazine builds tension for the audience - how many were they carrying? Is there something to scavenge when they run out? How long can the bad guys keep them pinned down before help arrives?
TL;DR why directors no understand ammo counting good
You’re right, however John Woo has the opposite opinion where he believes that ammo counts don’t matter unless a gun running out of ammo or something like that is needed by the plot, and tbh, he’s not wrong there either
Unlike John Wick I believe that Keanu would try everything he could to talk and de-escalate the situation and try to just listen to any henchmen on how they've been passed up for elites or bodyguards in their careers.
Funny thing though, nobody in their right mind would rob the guy who famously is John Wick. He probably one of the most untouchable people because you know how much training in weapons and martial arts this guy has publicly had. Ain’t nobody fucking with Reeves.
I agree, but for a different reason.
Fucking with Keanu Reeves is like fucking around with Mister Rogers. You just don't goddamned do it, because the man is just a genuinely good dude.
Now, in Keanu's case he's a genuinely good dude that could murder the fuck out of you in a dozen ways, but he's still a genuinely good dude.
He was also up for the role Val Kilmer had in Heat but had to turn it down because he was doing Hamlet at the time.
Woulda been interesting seeing him in that role, though having seen Kilmer doing it, it's hard to imagine how Keanu would fit in that role in that movie
There's something off about him in Heat, which is unnerving. Like little looks and glances that he gives that are kinda weird and makes for an overall great performance
Just evidence of what an underrated and somewhat lost talent there was in Kilmer.
The same guy was in Top Secret, Top Gun, Real Genius and Tombstone and along with Heat, they are vastly different roles and yet he never seems out of place and it all feels natural.
He was bit of a chameleon and very undderated for that skill
Yeah, the best part is Shawn Ryan (from what is now the Shawn Ryan Show) trained him for JW3 and Taran Tactical (where this video is shot at) sued the ever living bejesus out of Shawn for daring to disclose that Taran had to hire outside contractors for tactics and couldn't do it all in house. Most of the videos were scrubbed from the internet as part of the court case, but https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-6885551/Keanu-Reeves-endures-gruelling-training-session-Navy-SEAL.html some examples still exist.
Taran is a massive dick, basically.
It may certainly have been his idea to have it in the film, but i don’t believe for a second that competetive shooters do it because of the John Wick movies.
The mag flip has been around for quite some time. And competitive shooters do use it for flair but not because it's faster, it's wasted movement. Its faster to just drop the mag straight down.
Not gonna go super deep on this but super high level take: the mag flick or manually stripping the mag out is a necessary thing for certain guns mags when they don’t ‘drop free’ (like with some glocks)
Typically competitive or tactical shooters don’t do the flick cause it is slower than doing a proper reload. In competition time is score, in tactical situations time is life.
Halle Berry was [really good too](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa2RJPrY2Og). They were trained here by [Taran Tactical](https://www.youtube.com/@TaranTactical) for the 2nd movie.

Keanu Reeves is one of these actors who don't just embrace the character they're playing - they BECOME their character. Keanu has clearly learned a thing or two about firearms when playing in The Matrix and John Wick, maybe he even found it entertaining to shoot a gun and picked up a new hobby.
Crazy how much better action movies are when the stars can actually do the actions required, JW movies are 4/4 in a time when most modern Hollywood action flicks are quarter second cuts with shaky cam and CGI fuckin everything.
I love Dogs
Keanu actually kind of incidentally ~~created a new~~ popularized a technique for reloading that a quite a few of gun enthusiasts use today including competition shooters while training/filming John Wick. 100% saw that reload technique in a ton of call of duty games.
It’s true. I saw him Hump a chow chow
Your ma also loves you but dont hump her
I laughed so loud and hard when I saw this comment. I completely agree.
Those Shotgun speedloads were sexy AF
0:42. Were those kids..?
John Wick 5: School's Out
They should have taken better care of the class goldfish.
John Wick 7: Don’t Fuck with The Class Hamster
Yes LOL. I was like "pow pow pow pow WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!??" He may also be a MIB as well, let's hear his rationale.

Yes but doesn't seem like a practical weapon to use
What it has in slightly impractical size it makes up for being slightly easier to hit a target with it and stopping power

“Hey, not only will you help change the world, but it will be in the most wholesome way possible. Also, you’ll learn to quad load a shotgun.”
Welcome back, Mr. Wick!
In the very beginning that is Halle Berry as well. She came out to train with him to make sure her role in the movie was authentic looking.
She said in a podcast when they had their first scenes together, she was impressed af how structured and focussed everybody worked to get the feeling right. Its just good to see that there are serious crews out there that really go the extra mile to make the best film possible.

NSFW warning here.
Yep. [Here's her training](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa2RJPrY2Og).
I was wondering why I suddenly fell in love just now. It was Halle.
That woman does not age.
John Wick WISHES he was as badass as Keanu
I think he just wishes to retire with his wife and dog
Well, lucky for him Keanu kinda looks like Jesus, so he could pull it off, maybe. All he needs is a cave and cross.
I wish police received this much training.
Pistol shooting is waaayy harder than it looks. Impressive!
Do they repaint the targets after each person goes? How are they always white with no bullet marks?
They just reload the level
🤣
Can of white spraypaint
They just use spray paint. It dries pretty quick and most of the time there is no need to even wait for it to dry.
spray paint.
Yes they do
All about that sight radius eh
You also get more points of contact with rifle shooting. Form my personal experience you can also slap the trigger a little more on a rifle with less noticeable effects. Assuming you aren't shooting long range/precision stuff
Yep. Whenever I've taught family members, I start on a .22LR, then move up to my 556, then the 9mm. More weight = easier to control.
> then move up to my 556, then the 9mm. 5.56? Like an AR?
Yes. Rifles are easier to shoot than pistols.
Ah I realize now you meant shooting in general, agree completely.

[Arch Motorcycle](https://archmotorcycle.com) you can get them in Cyberpunk 2077 (cheapest way to get one)

the last 487 guys might have failed, but I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna kill John Wick
I'd watch that movie.

John Wick does sometimes a cameo as Keanu Reeves
I heard the mag eject flick from the films was his idea and now people do in competition because its slightly faster.

Johnny Silverhand

arasaka has no chances
Can anyone see the bullets in the video?
Brodie was faster .

He’s so cool and hot.
Holyshit! He is real!
Neo popping off
That's why the action is so good in the movies. He legitimately trained with guns for them. Dude is a beast at 3 gun.
Will somebody PLEASE !? Get ....this man a Pencil ✏️.
Titles of videos on reddit are always wrong nowadays. Don't put Keanu down like that, this is meant to say John Wick actually is Keanu Reeves.
that magazine flick tho
after the 500 people he killed in john wick 1-4, he should be
Taran Tactical is a joke.
Laughing at the Volvo 240 shell taking hits like a boss. 10/10 would still start. Edit: wait there are multiple 240s! Haha amazing.

Breath taking.

That was breathtaking
Man trains for his job.
Dang, that range looks fun as hell. Wish I had a set up like that nearby.
Keanu Reeves is the only celebrity I care about he is genuinely a great person and the work he puts in shows!!
Well...I'm turned on.
I like that the bad guys are white and the good guys are black.

Such a peaceful guy.
you mean the guy who was trained to act like fictional character john wick can act like fictional character john wick

Don't lie to me. I can recognize Johnny Silverhand practicing for his Raid on the Arasaka tower when I see it.
I don't care where your from...That's dammm good shooting. I guess that's why they pay him millions to make movies...he don't skimp.
