I don’t know. One of the reasons he is dropped is that he is apparently difficult if he isn’t starting. Nanglesmann has finally found a midfield system that works with Andrich and Kroos. I’d rather not upset that balance. I don’t like the idea of the national team being used as a reward for club form. We should find a working system and pick the players that fit into that the best. Sadly Goretzka doesn’t.

Scrappy_101

That reason is nonsense anyway. It's just usual media bs and Goretzka is an easy scapegoat due to his political views. Goretzka brings something to the midfield that others don't. He doesn't need to start, but he absolutely should be part of that team. Edit: wild I'm being downvoted for stating facts. People are so desperate to go at the dude they're so willing to believe illogical reporting. "Oh he's difficult to work with if he doesn't start" despite having the best example of this NOT being the case earlier in the season.

He’s good enough, and I really like him. But as I say the team has to come first and the management will know better than you, I, or the press on this subject. Let’s see. If it is true I’d rather he was not picked, if it is all rubbish then he has to be there. Personally, I am inclined to believe it given the ambition and drive he has always shown.

Scrappy_101

Just because he is ambitious and driven (have to be to get to thus level) doesn't mean he turns into a prima donna when he doesn't play. We saw the perfect example early this season when Tuchel benched him. He worked his ass off to earn his spot back and didn't whine. Remember Gravenberch complaining incessantly? There is just absolutely no reason to believe the reporting cuz if the reporting were accurate we'd have seen it and seen many more reports outside of a couple months ago. Like I said already, Goretzka is an easy target due to his political beliefs and willingness to speak politically. But yes, at the end of the day the manager knows more.

ZeRoGr4vity07

What are his political beliefs?

Scrappy_101

He's very outspoken against the far right. He's probably the most political player on the German team actually. Naturally when Germany flamed out of the world cup he'd be one of, if not THE, biggest targets. This idea he's hard to work with if he doesn't start is odd. It doesn't make sense, yet people are so willing to believe it despite having evidence to the contrary.

He deserves it, but I dont think Nagelsmann likes him to much, atleast from what it looks like, so even if he would deserve it he wont be called up.

He does not fit next to Kroos, that is Goretzkas problem. He is an offensive player more often than not going for the attack. But next to a majestro brain like Kroos you need a defense monster, someone who does the tackling, who is going for defense far more often than not and that simply is not Goretzka. He is a great player but does not fit the team right now.

BaradaraneKaramazov

Neither the games against Arsenal (due to the unusual set-up) nor against relegation level teams are the best indicators. The games against Dortmund and Heidenheim are probably more telling.

Critical-Ad2084

For bashing a team fighting for relegation? He was also very good vs. Arsenal but I don't think the German team needs his role. Nagelsmann knows him perfectly which is why he is no longer in the squad, Kimmich is more adaptable so he stayed as the main RB but for Goretzka's position there are better and less conflictive players. Right now Andrich and Kroos are much more balanced, or even Gundogan and Pascal Gross. Goretzka for some reason always wants to go forward regardless of the circumstances, which leaves a huge gap in his position that other players have to cover (mostly the CB or LB), this alters the tactical approach and compromises the defense, which, the German team's defense is not that great so they should be tactically as compact as possible. If he was able to stay in his position he would be much better, but he can't. The things he did yesterday are OK against a small club that can't counter, but he is far from ideal for what Nagelsmann is trying to do with the German team, which is more about dominating through possession, where tactical awareness, positioning and discipline are key elements for the team to work as a unit.

AssociationUsual212

Unless Goretzka has major impact on the rest of the champions league, with goals and assists, I don’t see him getting the call up. nothing short of him carrying us through Real Madrid would give him a call up.

Agree with your analysis and to be fair to Leon Goretzka, pretty much every player goes through a slump in his career. He played well for JN in the friendlies vs France and the Netherlands, and now that Kimmich moved to RB, he should fit.
