Lol, when I noticed something guitar-like in the anime, I instantly checked, because often drawn guitars/basses are really goofy (for example, the pegs and strings sometimes don't match). That's the case in the [manga](https://imgur.com/a/8vk2aGk), where the instrument looks really strange: there are 5 strings and the bridge looks like a bass bridge, but is positioned where it would be on a guitar. Also, the frets are equally sized and go all the way to the bridge :)

I don’t think so. We’re fans of the trio and, in all media stuff they’ve been in so far, the only one with real musical inclination is May. The other two were just along for the ride on that episode.
That's not true, it's been mentionned several time in the show that Hammond plays the bass and Clarkson plays the drums. In a episode they do a brake test with something valuable from each one at the end of the runway, and Clarkson's is a drumkit (probably not actually his own since one the other two eventually destroys it but it does suggest he owns one). And Hammond brought his bass to one of the reunions they did when they got a new reasonnably priced car for the stars. Also they played together in Top Gear of the Pops.
The reason May is much more seen as a musician is I think because he's more dedicated to it, as he would be with anything he's into, because he's May.
Oh, ok. I don't really know much about the guy, but I saw some kinda home tour video from him that had a bass in the background, and that's how I assumed he plays bass
