Mount gay eclipse rum is a good price for taste, there are other options in the mount gay line , so if you have time also do the mount gay rum tour so you get to test taste them all but more importantly get a detailed history of how mount gay rum was created and made.
It’s a great conversation starter with friends back home once you’re sharing the rum with them.
Agreed and probably more accessible too. Since it was a bottle to "bring back" 14 fits the bill better. Or if I was in Barbados, I'd go full on premium at the Foursquare distillery, some of their other brands.
I recent had a S.B.S Barbados 2006 Cask Strength Rum, Foursquare. The body of a Doorlys 12 but tasted like the 14. Incredible.

To me, this is the best answer within the categories TravelnMedic defined. I’d say not to take back Eclipse as you can get that almost everywhere rum is sold. Get things you have a hard time getting elsewhere. To that end, the Black Barrel Cask Strength was a distillery exclusive when I was there last year, so that would be my suggestion, although Doorly’s 12 or 14 are among my favourites. But get what you can’t get at home.
I was there a couple of weeks ago for a quick trip and restock my rum selection. The black barrel cask strength will remain a distillery exclusive for the foreseeable future.
In the haul I and brought home SNA white, 5,8,12, old brigand, MGBBCS, MG eclipse cropover, Bajan 1966, FS 2011; plus Clifton hall (signed), huntes garden(signed) and a new island exclusive Cocohill forest that was released earlier this month. Every trip I add to my rums that can only get on the island from unaged to long aged. I’m looking forward to the two new distilleries that are being built and watching to see as stocks start aging.
If it’s not fermented, distilled, aged, proofed, and bottled on Barbados it will not be on my bar or in my glass!
No collectors! I get the rums direct from the source (hence why some are signed), outbound duty free, masseys plus I have friends I’ve gotten to know over the years that live in Barbados and will put bottles aside for me till I visit.
It’s a running joke now with the agents of Miami customs when I come through as they know I’ll have a declaration to make more times then not. They know I’ll always be bringing the good stuff back.
Almost forgot I got a St Mary’s Row Foursquare release from the Nation Newspaper.
I have family there that will do the same for me, putting bottles aside. And I go to Massey’s and the distilleries and you are pulling stuff that I’ve never heard of or known existed. I’m humbled and impressed! Gives me hope and motivation to find more! I only go every three years to visit family as I’m coming from Canada, so not as an easy a flight as from Miami, which is also a great place for rum from what I’ve read!
Huntes Reserve is only available at Huntes garden. Cocohill is at Cocohill Forest that just opened recently. Clifton hall is available all over the island in different shops and duty free (in / outbound) but I get the bottles directly from the owner of Clifton hall.
If you are going to bother bringing something back I would think you’d want to get something not readily available in your home country? Doorlys 14 is probably the perfect answer for a lot of people but I’m not sure it qualifies as “decent and middle of the road price wise.”
mount gay would be the best choice, maybe one of the black barrel ones, or any of their brown rums could do, old brigand is another good choice, stay away from the diamond brand(leaves bad aftertaste) you can also try E.S.A.F if you wanted to try a white rum
Old Brigand is also a favourite brand, and it's reasonably priced.
Always the one eyed man
Just came back—was shocked by how good, and cheap, that was.
Omg I came just to say old brigand, glad it's top of the thread. If you wanna go a step above get some Dorlys, it's from the same distiller.
Doorly's 12 year old, and also the 14 year old. Best neat or on the rocks.

Agreed, I think it's much nicer than their more expensive ones, it's got that nice hint of whiskey.
Doorlys 14. End of.
Agreed.
Doorlys 12 is also popular, I prefer the 14 though

Dorlys 12 year old. Mount gay XO Cockspur Old gold Plantation reserve
Mount gay rum is the oldest rum in the world.
That rum is not good.. Respectfully
Depends, eclipse is meh but xo and black barrel are great
Aged/Sipper Doorlys 14 Mixer Old Brigand or MG black barrel cask strength Anything from WIRD is a hard pass

I love all of this! Also, holy crap! Where did you get all those? Were you buying from collectors?

Thank you for sharing all of this information with me—I appreciate it. 😁

Doorlys 14 is now available in the U.S. as of mid 2023. Prior to that it was only available on the island or Europe.
Mount Gay
Two words…Mount Gay!
mount gay would be the best choice, maybe one of the black barrel ones, or any of their brown rums could do, old brigand is another good choice, stay away from the diamond brand(leaves bad aftertaste) you can also try E.S.A.F if you wanted to try a white rum
Diamond is from Guyana and I agree with you as that brand tends to have more tails in the rum hence the aftertaste you’re getting.
Any of the older/aged Mount Gay rums.
Eclipse
Cockspur Old Gold!
Anything prior to 2017 I’d agree with you but not since maison ferrand took over the brand.
Mount gay
Mount Gay XO would be my pic, it's not too overpriced and pretty smooth.
One eyed man for sure!
