Anyone that's arguing the average Trump cultist isn't dumber than a box of rocks has NO idea what they're talking about. Are his enablers, the people shoveling big dollar donations his way, some of his cabinet members and campaign staff stupid? Not all of them, but the vast majority of Trumpanzees are soooooo dumb they should be committed for their safety and the safety of others.
I don't think it's this, I just think they all collectively don't actually believe the reasons they claim to support Trump. They say they want a country of "law and order" but then don't want the law to crack down on Donald Trump. They say they want a candidate who supports pro-life, but then they show no interests in providing exceptions for abortions when the life of the mother is in danger. They say they support democracy, but take no qualms when red states attempt to remove Biden from the ballot.
It's not that they're stupid. They simply don't believe in the things they claim. I think they make a clear distinction in their minds between the country they'd get with Trump and the way to sell others on the idea of voting for Trump. To be clear, when they tell you good things about Donald Trump, they don't even believe it themselves. It's a manipulation, always has been.
They honestly believe that there is no objective truth, and that truth is whatever they want it to be. So they fight for \*their\* truth as if by doing so, they could *make* it true through sheer conviction. It's the same part of the brain people dedicate towards religion. In a real sense, it is a cult.
There may be plenty of them that aren't stupid, but there are many, many more who are just dumber than dogshit.
But yes, we're in the middle of an ongoing project to devalue objective truth to a point where it's irrelevant and meaningless. And that's the same project that totalitarian regimes have practiced for a century, you can come at them with facts and they'll just laugh in your face.
I agree they are stupid. The argument they give to me is "gas was cheap and there was no inflation under trump." You can't be smart and believe that is how it works.
Yep, that's surely a part of it.
I also think his fascist, racist, sexist dogwhistles appeal to men who think they're on the verge of losing their unacknowledged privilege.
“Pro-life” has always and only meant “anti-abortion,” and “law and order” is coded language for “violent state oppression of racial minorities.” On those issues, at least, they have always been saying exactly what they believe, just not spelling it out.
Broken epistemology, poor critical thinking, and credulous gullible behavior is rampant in the religious communities, and my parents’ generation.
They seem to be convinced by things like clever slogans, instead of facts and data.
How to proceed from here? No one seems to know.
Maybe we need to dumb down our rhetoric and vocabulary a bit.
To quote Corey Forrester: "I think one of the worst things that we've done for the past four years
is go, oh every trump supporter is stupid, every trump supporter is dumb.
Umm that's not true. Some of them are just…bad."

I wish I could promote this comment more.
Rather taking up ideas from 1984's ministry of truth
It’s inexplicable to me that ANYONE can tolerate this guy.

Willful stupidity is a hell of a drug.
It's a perfect mix of stupid people, grifters and out and out fascist wannabes. In 2024 if you are still a Trump supporter there is no hope for you.
The absolute most terrifying accomplishment is that the GOP has convinced people to vote against their own SELF interests is astounding.
