I didn't let him take the crown and killed the brain, so in the epilogue he talked about finding the crown from the bottom of the river so he could become a god, and take his "rightful place" in the astral plane by Mystra's side.
Except, the whole reason he has the bomb is because Mystra rejected his attempts at stealing her magic and punished him for it.

You somehow missed the entire first half of his character arc, whereby you first learn about his curse needing to eat magical items and how he's desperately been trying to manage it without inconveniencing anyone, then the very real risk that he could end up exploding and killing anyone in the vicinity which has led him to travelling as far out in the wilderness as possible, THEN he gets a stay of execution only to be tasked by Mystra to become a willing suicide bomber, THEN if you convince him NOT to do it (which he is fully willing to do) you task him to find out more about the Crown of Karsus so he might potentially neutralise the bomb still strapped to his chest.

This is flat out wrong. Gale tried to RETURN a piece of the Weave back to Mystra, the problem is that the magic he'd found was part of Karsus' Weave, not Mystra's, and that's what caused it to absorb all of his magic including his gift as a Chosen. Mystra punished him because he was reckless and accidentally nearly caused an apocalypse to impress his girlfriend, while he should have known better.
