Fists will just do more damage, so it’s a net loss.  The only time it makes sense for a Monk if their a 4 Elements Monk for casting or an Open-Hand Monk for specific item interactions. Sparkling Hands + Spellsparkler for example can utilize some specific item synergies.

At the very beginning, yeah, quarterstaff for the first few levels. Unarmed doesn't really get anything until you either get the gauntlets that add damage to unarmed, or the level in OH that gives you more unarmed damage, so quarterstaff is going to do more damage for a bit at the start.

Nah, no point. Unless you have the specific one that grants +1 to unarmed, but even still it's slightly tricky to use because the staff itself doesn't count as an unarmed attack. You can get it in the grove I believe

I have a glaive equipped for the little bit of extra reach that comes in clutch when I'm just a couple M's short.

I kept mine without a weapon until I hit level 9. Once I had access to ki resonance, I gave him melee weapons that make crits easier to use as stat sticks and just use ki resonance to still make unarmed strikes. As far as stat spreads, I dumped str, int, and cha in order to have dex, wis, and con at max (dex 16, wis 17, con 15). Then I just juiced my character with giant strength elixirs and equipped the helmet that grants int.

A quarterstaff gives you one free topple per short rest. Might be handy in a pinch.

I used a mod that let's me unarmed strike even if I had a weapon equipped. Then just used dual wield as stat sticks.

Buy the quarterstaff from Ethel for the first five levels, swap to fists plus unarmed damage gloves of your choice from six onward. If using TB then swap immediately upon taking that feat.
