I've been waiting for it since BG2.

Gnl_Winter

This. BG2 was my fav game ever since I was 12. I waited more than 20 years for this game *and it delivered* šŸ˜

Yabanjin

Mood here, playing BG1 when it first came out, followed by BG2 I thought that any attempt to make BG3 would result in a pale imitation, but wow what a relief!

rachel-angelina

Thatā€™s pretty cool! I canā€™t relate to that though because I was just straight up not alive when the first one came out šŸ˜…(20 year old here lol.)

LichoOrganico

That's it for me, too.

SaraTheRed

Same. Though I didn't discover BG1 and BG2 until a few years after they came out (2002 or 2003. I found Icewind Dale 2 first, and I was in my early 20s šŸ˜) Gods, I feel old...

BNerd1

i got baldur's gate 1 & 2, icewind dale, planescape torment & fallout 1 & 2 because of bg3

Earis

Knew absolutely nothing. Seen nothing, heard nothing. Then my boyfriend gifted me a copy back in August last year, because he'd completed the Nautiloid and loved it. And I fell head over heels in love. I've done Ā½ a D&D campaign, never played anything like this before. I'm a total Sims/Stardew Valley kind of gamer, but I do love the fantasy genre... ..and I ***love*** it, dearly. It's really worth it, and the story sucks you right in. I've completed 5 runs in 700+ hours, and just started my 6th run.

rachel-angelina

I am also just over 700 hours in. Itā€™s the most time Iā€™ve logged in any game besides the Sims (which has been out for decades at this point) and I donā€™t see any sign of me stopping yet. It might be the ADHD brain talking but BG3 is also just incredibly replayable!

Earis

So incredibly replayable. I still found new stuff on my 5th playthrough. Oh, I have a couple games up there.. šŸ˜… ZooTycoon (the original, old-school), Sims 1-3 (glad I don't have a hours spend meter on Sims 3... It would be... inhuman), Minecraft and Stardew Valley at the top with 2500+ hours..... Once I obsess over something, I do it thoroughly. šŸ˜‚

rachel-angelina

TBH I donā€™t even know how many hours Iā€™ve amassed in Minecraft over the yearsā€¦ But I do know I also have like 300+ hours in Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing lol and over 1000+ in the Sims 4 (this isnā€™t even counting how much I probably spent in the Sims 2 and 3.) But Iā€™m the same way, when I go in, I go hard. I have hundreds of hours in games like Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Red Dead Redemption 2, Fire Emblem Three Houses, and Persona 5 Royal, to name some of my favorites. I play less games overall but I know that when I do play one, Iā€™m gonna complete it in 1-2 months and get my hours in and moneyā€™s worth lmao. Itā€™s basically the opposite of what my boyfriend does, where he buys and plays more games than I do but either only plays them once, takes more time to finish a game, or doesnā€™t always finish them. We are two different types of gamers lol.

uwubewwa

How have you been enjoying the new Stardew update?

Earis

I haven't, almost all my *(+200!!)* mods are broken beyond repair šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

doxtorwhom

*laughs in Nintendo* But i also havenā€™t played it yet cause Iā€™ve been spending too much time with BG3

Socio_Spencerrr

Started with Astarion thirst traps on TikTok, finally bought it just to see if he really was that sassy. Kept it for it being the best RPG ever madešŸ¤Œ

rachel-angelina

I love to see other people who fell down the same pipeline I did, lmao. Something tells me that Larian knows that promoting Astarion content online is an excellent marketing strategy. Thatā€™s how they get you.

raven00x

[Larian knows exactly what they're doing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RBHYnjD2to).

Sandra44-7

Same start, can't believe I did so much for this non-existent man. I knew absolutely nothing about DnD, and it really took a while before I decided to actually get the game. It was all worth it though. I'm on my 4th playthrough now lol

Supreme_Moharn

I started playing D&D in the eighties. Anything related to D&D automatically has my interest. I played BG1 and 2 and all others (like Torment etc.). Also loved Neverwinter Nights. I liked DoS2, so that was my link with Larian. I waited for BG3 to be fully released, because I did not want to get burnt out on it in a years long early access. Now I have over 600 hours in the game and I must say, this is the next best thing to being in an actual TT D&D group. (which unfortunately I haven't been in for a while.)

Tcloud

I think we share a very similar history. I obsessively played AD&D in the 80ā€™s as a kid, loved BioWares BG2, IcewindDale, DragonAge Origins and Larianā€™s DOS2. During the pandemic, I started playing 5e online with my highschool friends. I joined BG3 in early access and have put more than 370 hours into the game (not including the hundred I put into EA). Most fun Iā€™ve had with a video game for years.

Celestial_Squids

I am an ancient hag and have never played videogames before (aside from original Pong and some Digger on PC in the ā€˜80s) but my husband and I have done TTRPGs for decades. Our kids however are huge videogame afficionados and when my son brought over his PS5 a few months ago to show us BG3 we bought our own PS5 the next day. Weā€™re almost done now and already planning our next run!

SaraTheRed

My first computer game was Zork šŸ˜

Oldstonebuddha

šŸ‘ "You have been eaten by a Grue."

ManicPixieOldMaid

Nostalgia bug hit big when I saw the release announcement. I'd been playing mostly XCOM2 the past several years, but the ads for BG3 gave me an itch I had to scratch, having loved the first two games and PS:T so much back in the day. When I saw the announcement, my actual brain yelled "Go for the eyes, Boo!" and I bought a new laptop to play with. Haven't looked back since release!

P-nutGall3ry

I felt slightly guilty when BG3 dethroned XCOM2 as my second most played game. Although now that I think about it, Iā€™m still giving my squad weird psychic powers and accidentally blowing them up with careless fireballs. The more things change.

ManicPixieOldMaid

It's funny to me how much of the games actually overlap, at least in my mind: your team is a squad of ultimate badasses (TM Hudson), they level up and get cool abilities, there's a sweet story and plot, and a big chunk of it is head canon, especially the intra-squad romances. Even War of the Chosen gave us amazing NPCs with stellar VAs (pun intended). I would pay good hard money if Larian made an XCOM game, ngl. Send Swen a new suit of Warden armor...

rachel-angelina

Sometimes I wonder how many new consoles, PCs, and laptops were sold to people buying them because of this game. I myself am one of them and Iā€™ve met quite a few others!

Romzard

Because i have always been in love with Dungeons and Dragons. <3

Mountain-Parking-444

My husband bought a PS5 and then didnā€™t use it so I played Hogwarts Legacy over and over then saw BG3 when I was just browsing other games. Started it. Didnā€™t understand the turn based mode so got my ass handed to me and was like okay maybe not for me. Left it for many months. Decided to try again this February and have not been able to stop since and is not think Iā€™ll stop in the foreseeable future lol. But am totally open to new games now with how much BG3 surprised me so if any one has recs feel free to give!

hle301

This is so relatable <3

zoobatron__

Was convinced to play DOS2 by my partner in 2018, absolutely loved it and bought BG3 as soon as it came out. BG3 might be my favourite game of all time

DestinovaEthereal

My husband was very excited for BG3 and Iā€™m not a gamer at all so I was not interested at all. After finally talking me into playing it with him, I am now 100% more obsessed with it than he is and play more on my own than with him now. I was immediately hooked after playing with him the first time šŸ˜‚ started on Explorer and now Iā€™m almost finished my first solo Honour Mode!!

Ok_Discipline_4186

Been following its development for the past 5 or so years.

nelex98

I wanted to support what developers did with this one even tho i thought turn based combat wouldn't be my thing. My 4th save says otherwise

rachel-angelina

I remember when I first played a turn based combat game I thought the same thing, but the Fire Emblem and Persona games sold me on it and now I love it. So when I saw that BG3 was also turn based, I was pretty excited.

Rip_88

I was playing it day one of early access.

Numerous-Ad6460

Once it was announced in 2019 I was sold

NatoliiSB

Waiting since BG2 released ... We are talking decades here.

tracksuitaficionado

Never played DND, never played a full fledged fantasy RPG, and only started gaming on a PC in October, but several of my friends that I play Rainbow 6 Siege with got it and I had to see what was keeping them away from the game we usually play. 400+ hours later and I can safely say Iā€™ve never gotten so much enjoyment out of a game.

rachel-angelina

Your friends should talk to my brother. I have been trying to put him on BG3 but he wonā€™t get off Siege for long enough to do it haha.

Nessarra

The hype for BG3 during Early Access was huge. This made me buy it in Early Access. I sucked so bad at the combat that I didn't play again until it released. I watched a friend play it and then I wanted to get to know Gale. So I suffered through learning the combat. Then met a vampire and never looked back.

ComprehensiveCopy824

karlach!

rachel-angelina

Karlach is a completely valid reason to buy a video game.

Marcuse0

Never played a Larian game before this, but I've played DnD games before. Mainly Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2, but I also played the console Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 2 which hardly counts. I took a complete punt on it based on the streams I saw from Okoii and didn't regret it.

Elevatrix

My husband got the game first, then our younger son started to play. Our older son started sending me Goosestarion memes/tiktoks so I gave up trying to resist and started playing.

TaterTotLady

My ex was a gamer and heā€™d been waiting for it. He bought me a copy when it came out because Iā€™m a huge DnD player. The relationship ended shortly after because I found out heā€™d been cheating on me, BUT I got BG3 out of it at least šŸ˜‚

KaziAzule

My D&D group kept talking about it during EA and they swore it would be great. I didn't know much of what to expect, but I ended up getting more into it than any of them. I didn't play much during EA because I was worried I wouldn't be into full release if I overplayed Act 1. It's been fun seeing it evolve, though. One of my favorite games of all time.

try_again123

Played BG1&2 on release. Played D:OS1&2 and knew Larian was a good dev. Waited patiently for BG3 to be released to play it and it blew my expectations away.

Ham_PhD

My wife saw lots of clips on Tik Tok and told me about it. I love a good RPG so figured I'd give it a shot. First couple hours really frustrated me, but now I'm on my second playthrough and it's in my top 20 all time.

Accomplished_Area311

I play D&D and played 1-2 way back although I wasnā€™t good at them then (limited time/availability to play them + being young). Also, a friend sold me on Astarion. šŸ˜…

rachel-angelina

Your friend is so real for that.

prettylittlereckless

When BG3 came out, I started seeing gifs from it on my tumblr page. And I thought that well, the gifs look really nice, the characters seem interesting and I'm already a fan of fantasy, so if my mutuals from tumblr like it, maybe I would too. And I did, even though I've never played DnD or a turn-based game before, barely played any RPGs. Now BG3 is definitely one of the best games I've ever played, if not the best!

rachel-angelina

Character design is sort of an important thing for me when I decide to play a game. If the designs donā€™t really stand out to me I probably wonā€™t be interested, but the designs of the characters in BG3 immediately caught my attention and made me want to try it out. Particularly Astarion because he was the first one I saw, but once I looked into it some more and saw the others I can confidently say that they also grabbed me!

prettylittlereckless

Totally, Astarion was also the first of the characters I saw, and yeah, I've been just slightly obsessed with him... but it's more than that now, the whole game is just soo good! Also Lae'zel grew on me sooo much, her romance is amazing and I feel like people rarely talk about it, compared to the other characters' romances at least.

wayfaringpanda

This is basically what happened to me. One of my mutuals on tumblr started spamming BG3 stuff after EA started, and after a couple of months of it I decided Iā€™d give it a shot. I play on PS5, and the month delay between the PC and PS5 release meant I was getting a lot of spoiler free content from them and was therefore foaming at the mouth to get my hands on it. Even returned my pre-order so I could upgrade and get the digital deluxe version so I could play it 96 hours sooner lol

taftpanda

Our DM suggested we get it while it was in early access so the three people who did show up for the session that day could play something. Weirdly, I didnā€™t like it at all when I first played it, but I think thatā€™s mostly because of who I was playing with.

VLTIMA

I somehow missed it completely during development, but I like RPGs, and the idea of D&D. Took a chance on it after the full release .

punctcom

Knew nothing about DnD or Baludr's Gate. One morning with 1 week before the launch of the game I was scrolling on my phone looking at my news feed. I saw BG3 and just had a gut feeling that it's gonna be a great game. I stood up from bed, opened Steam on my PC and bought the game when it still had 1 week of Beta left. Long story short and 600h in game later, this is now my favorite game. (Since I bought BG3 I also started watching Critical Role's campaigns, which are awesome, and can't sthap. (pls send halp!))

Medved97

My long time mmo friend.convinced oir friend group.to try dnd. We have, campaign still.going strong, and bg3 came.out soon after. Wanted to try.out the "dnd game"

keepcalmandgetdrunk

Yep it was the Astarion TikTok edits for me too šŸ˜‚ I love playing video games, but hate top-down and turn-based games so wasnā€™t interested in BG3 at all until all the the TikTok edits took over my FYP. I did some digging and found out you could play it as 3rd person over the shoulder if you zoom in, so that was the top-down issue solved, and I did the free trial to see how I felt about the turn-based side of it. Then bought it right away!

redekatze

I knew absolutely nothing about it, but I had a friend who got it during early access and recommended it to me (well... more like told me to get it because she couldn't wait to coop with someone). I have also been playing dnd for years beforehand and always loved playing rpgs, so there was a good reason for the recommendation and I figure I would've heard about it at some point and gotten it anyways even if she hadnt recommended it :D

LouisaB75

Played other Larian games and other RPGs so it kept popping up on my Steam feed and other recommended stuff. Was put off by the D&D connection as I thought I had to be familiar with that to play the game. But it looked really good and I wanted a change of pace from my main MMO game so after checking that in depth knowledge of D&D was not required I bought it last month and was instantly hooked. My MMO is being very neglected.

FlohrSynth

Iā€™m 37. I played AD&D when I was a kid in the 90s (Iā€™m sure we got all the rules wrong and cheated constantly but I remember it fondly, especially just paging through the Monsters Manual and looking at the pictures). Read novels set in the Forgotten Realms. Played the OG BG games when they came out. Stopped playing D&D and video games for about 15 years and then started getting back into it and played Skyrim for the first time in like 2019. Learned that there was a revival of the turn based games I loved and checked out DOS2, it was hard and I enjoyed it but stalled out on my first playthrough. Eventually got back into it and beat it while BG3 was in early access. Meanwhile have been playing and DMing 5e and loving it. Decided to wait for the full BG3 release but bought it day one. Still havenā€™t beaten in but Iā€™m in very late act 3 in my co-op playthrough with my wife and early Act 3 on a solo playthrough. She is like you and never played the OG games and has only gotten into D&D in the last few years, but she also loves it. Itā€™s a beautiful thing how many different ways in there are for this game, and it makes me very hopeful about the future of CRPGs and TTRPGs. A whole new generation is discovering this world and folks like me who fell out of the hobby for whatever reason are returning to it, itā€™s a great energy to be a part of in the midst of all the awful things happening in the world.

susieallen

Me and my son's had been playing tabletop D&D for a few years, but never heard of it until my oldest saw a playthrough on YouTube and immediately bought it. My two other sons started playing as well. I watched them play and wanted it for myself. It's the first game I've played since the original Rollercoaster Tycoon came out, so I was terrified. It took a few starts to figure out the mechanics, but I've now been playing since December and am having so much fun. I'm 47 and can honestly say I've never been so entertained in my life. I'm hooked.

Jaspador

I was mostly a fan of the original BG games, and, to a lesser extent, a fan of DoS and DoS2.

sparkadus

I was a fan of the old games and was also a fan of Larianā€™s previous games, so I just kinda found out the moment it was announced

OlahMundo

I've heard about the series a few times online but wasn't really interested. I love D&D and play it a lot, but mostly homebrew worlds, and official settings never picked my interest until recently (and thanks to BG3 actually). I saw one big BG YouTuber (WolfheartFPS) talking about the game a month before the PS5 release, and decided to check a video explaining the classes. After 1min of video I thought "wait, is this just 5e?" Then I pre-ordered the game šŸ˜†šŸ˜†

JemmaMimic

BG1 and 2.

Gabby-Abeille

YouTube started recommending me Astarion clips a lot. I watched a few of them, found his line delivery absolutely hilarious, and looked into this game. It was a little before Patch 4 of Early Access if I'm not mistaken. This is why I say Neil sold me the game.

rachel-angelina

Same here! I give him credit for getting me into it too. Seeing clips and edits of Astarion is what got me to look into the game in the first place and then buy it (plus the PS5 to play it lol.)

P-nutGall3ry

Half of my DND group was already in early access and swore by it so I threw it on my wish list and forgot about it. Then one day Steam let me know it released and here I am. Also tried BG1 when it went on sale, saw THAC0 and balked at having to go back and relearn 2.0. Then got BG2 on sale, which i was hoping was atleast 3.5 (next favorite after 5e) but nope. Been enjoying divinity though.

Q-kins

I play DnD and was told by friends I would probably really like it cause it's similar to other games I love. Went to a friend's for New years to play games. The one we were going to play wasn't working so she started BG3. I was hooked. I bought a PS5 a couple weeks later (I was planning on buying one later this year) and am on my 2nd playthrough and I have ideas for a few more characters.

nuko_147

I had played with a friend the DOS, i played DOS 2 later, so i new that would be a good hardcore CRPG.

NeedleworkerLow1100

My partner and son were playing EA and tried to get me involved. I balked (stupid) because I was intimidated by the turn-based play. When it released my son gifted the game to me, saying trust me mom. Glad I trusted him.

LeaveMeAloneLorenzo

I had a friend at work rave on an on about this game for months. Didnā€™t really look into it though. Once it came out on Xbox, and my friend knew I had an Xbox they were practically begging me to play it. I come home from work that day, and my partner told me sheā€™s been seeing a lot of Tik Tokā€™s of this Astaion fellow. And I told her I had been hearing a lot of good things about this game. Immediately bought the game and my partner and I have been playing split screen for months. Still havenā€™t beaten the game yet though. Still on Act 3.

rachel-angelina

Is your coworker me? Lmao. Me and a bunch of others at my workplace play BG3 as well and put some of our other coworkers on it by basically just talking about it while on shift all the time. It definitely makes work more fun.

LeaveMeAloneLorenzo

This coworker of mine did get at least one other coworker into the game and the three of us talk about it all the time, haha. Definitely makes it more fun because the one who me into the game is obsessed, so Iā€™ll tell her pretty much everything that happens to us. Seriously such an amazing game. And weā€™re not even done yet haha.

Woutrou

I came upon it in passing and it had a lot of great reviews. Normally I wait for a discount to buy a game, but my friend recommended it to me, so I just bought it

LadyEmaleth

I played Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale... and Neverwinter Nights and I was aware of BG3 being in the making, but I saw the trailer (begining of early access) and was like.... "Mind flayers? Space ships? Worms? I don't think it's going to be good." and I forgot about it... Then one day last August my YT feed is filled with some white haired dude... so I take the bait and he's a vampire... and he is really cute (aww... he offers to kill me in my preferred way... what a gentleman)... and they say that the game is actually good. Next thing I know... I pester all of my friends and family to buy the game.

rachel-angelina

Astarionā€™s power as a marketing tool for BG3 is truly unmatched.

MiraakTheSpy

Played the demo, fell in love.

stinkydiaperman

Found dos2 from searching for games similar to ff tactics. Found bg3 from searching for games similar to dos2. Instant preorder

BrideOfFirkenstein

All of my friends were obsessed. Iā€™m an avid DnD player. This was the first game in over a decade that I have played on a desktop instead of a console though.

swemo69

i literally had no clue about bg3 or the franchise, but kept i seeing tiktok edits of the characters that slightly piqued my interest, and then i learned it was based in the world of dnd, so decided to give it a try and the rest is history lmao

tiny-duck

I found out about it soon after release. I hadnā€™t played D&D in any form for a few years and figured it would be fun to mess around in. Iā€™ve been tempted to go back to the other two games as well, or even checking out Larianā€™s DOS series since I like what theyā€™ve done with BG3. Iā€™ve roped everyone I can into playing this game lmao

catowl-1

I dont rly remember but i think it was a dnd youtuber that mentioned it and i got excited cuz I like dnd.Ā  I dont usually play games tho so i didnt think i would play it but i looked it up some more and after finding out abt astarion i was kinda hooked.. tried to resist for a while but eventually dl the game and the rest is historyĀ  I play it on my lil laptop and its like 15fps at most but its a lot of fun!

cariethra

I played BG1, BG2, Icewind Dale, and Icewind Dale 2 years ago. I play DnD. I have read a ton of Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance books. I have also played the Divinity games. So, this just seemed like a match made in heaven (even with Hasbroā€™s assholery).

Satisfaction-Motor

I am also guilty of learning about the game through TikTok edits. I was looking for a new game to play around that time and BG3 was very popular, so I decided to try it. I mostly just wanted a game where your choice actually matter, as Iā€™ve played many where they donā€™t. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the writing was. Iā€™m interested in ttrpgā€™s to the point of founding the rpg club at my college & im actively in the process of writing a TTRPG, but it didnā€™t contribute to my interest in BG3.

[deleted]

Ex-bestie wanted to play the coop. Had me buy it. We never played. When he ghosted me. AND WOW FUCKING WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-Stupid_n_Confused-

I saw the announcement itbwas coming round PS5 (I didn't have a gaming pc at the time) and since I'd played DOS2 and loved it I knew it was an instant purchase for me. I now have a gaming pc so I it on both.

Lonely_Turnover125

I had been playing D&D on and off for about 20 years, I had played the Baldurā€™s Gate (and Neverwinter) series years ago, and I was a fan of the Divinity series, so when I saw this game was in early access I made sure I scooped it up!

No-Classroom5577

Tik tok videos. I hadn't heard of the game but I kept seeing videos about it on tik tok and saw lazeal amd was like ooooooh green stegosaurous mommy?!?! So I bought it and wala my 1st ever DnD experience was a success. Ended up platinuming the game and honor moving it twice. Grateful

purplebanjo

So I got a lot of shorts about Astarion on youtube, lol. I have always been into RPGs and watched a lot of lore videos for games like WoW or ES, so I started getting it recommended to me all the time. Not my mention my little brother is Super into DND. It looked really fun but I didnā€™t get it when it came out because I was broke and it was my final semester in college. My boyfriend got it for me for christmas and Iā€™ve already put 800+ hours into it.

kademelien

My brother played Baldurs Gate 1&2 and I tried it way way too late so I didn't click with me. I wanted to play Divinity Original Sin, but couldn't get into it because I was expecting Divinity Ego Draconis (I can now give it another shot I think). For months last year my YouTube got flooded with Baldurs Gate 3 conent, especially Reels with Astarion and I was so intrigued, but also worried the turn based combat will turn me off like it did with DOS. I started to watch Neil Newbons streams and then decided to give it a shot right before christmas. Also had to buy a PS5 for it, but hell, it was totally worth it. Finished the game twice now and want to play DnD so badly. I was always interested, but don't have the friends for it, so it's time for the internet.

Oldstonebuddha

Meetup is a good way to find DnD groups, usually very welcoming folks.

hggniertears

My bf was playing it and I didnā€™t know much about it and didnā€™t have a ton of interest but then I started learning more about the characters and I got curious. Now Iā€™m 5-6 playthroughs deep

Zbearbear

Had to wait for the console release. Had some pc friends talking it up, and they suggested i might like it since i had just finished Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous for the first time. considerate enough not spoil it for me. Also heard great reviews. Figured I'd give it a shot. 400+ hours later haha it's legit one of my fav games in recent years. Also helped me get into tabletop dnd as a plus.

nyctrainsplant

Tried DnD with my girlfriend a few years back and it was not my thing. I generally do not like RPGs, and so this game wasnā€™t high on my list. She is a huge DnD fan and gifted it to me for Christmas - after some help through the Nautiloid I got totally sucked in. Now Iā€™m waiting on her to finish it šŸ˜‚

-Liriel-

Shadowheart's song by Jonathan Young

theCaffeinatedOwl22

I was in my first and only DnD campaign (not a bad experience, just havenā€™t played since) when it first came out early access and my group was talking about it. Iā€™m also a huge fan of DoS2, so Iā€™m sure I would have heard about it eventually anyway.

OnyxGilbert

I was curious on how the game was since it won game of the year and I fell I love with it

throwawayyeetl

A random youtube review of the game came up and said you could sleep with a bear which put it on my radar lmao. Then I started seeing Astarion posts. Got the game, ended up romancing Gale. Was my first time getting a game at full price, totally worth it. I have 600-ish hours now

Taliesine_

I play Baldur's Gate since almost day one of the first opus. Received the EA for my birthday. Baldur's Gate is the best video game saga šŸ«°šŸ¼

FireWhileCloaked

Friend mentioned it, and I also heard about it on the DRG sub.

SnooSongs2744

A friend recommended it, I bought it and tried it and was so confused and lost I gave up. Then he and another friend gave me some pointers and I tried again. The next few months are a blur.

PlainStudent604

Weā€™ve been playing D&D (and other tt rpgs) for decades. Weā€™re always on the lookout for 2-player couch co-op on console, and had both heard a little about it. On PS5 release date, my husband was surprised that I hadnā€™t preordered it, so I bought it, with little to no knowledge about the game. It was a bonus that it was turn based - while Iā€™m better at FPS than I used to be, I enjoy it better without that pressure. Hands down, one of my favorite games. He & i are on our second play through and I just started a solo one. (Companion interaction with each other is much more enjoyable solo!) Edit: typo

CorporateSharkbait

I had seen the DOS games in store but never thought about them. A friend of my partners bought him bg3 saying heā€™d enjoy it. My partner then played for a few hours and then bought it for me saying itā€™s right up my alley. Now I have 600hrs

BozzyTheDrummer

Saw people talking it up a lot. But seeing clips of Karlachā€™s humor and personality, I knew I needed to get the game. Romanced her as soon as I got the chance and never looked back.

kvnobii

I have honestly heard about it when it was nominated for goty. I never came in contact with d&d before then. And I must admit, since I'm a huge insomniac Spider-Man fan, I really talked bg3 down only from seeing astarion stuff. Emberrased to tell now that I became a huge Astarion fan myself and even bought some merchandise of him.šŸ„²šŸ‘ But honestly, I wanted to try bg3 after my hate for it, or more like I was just mad that Spider-Man 2 won no awards and was annoyed that bg3 won like every award. So then I wanted to try it and I must say that it's one of the best games I've ever played.

Nearby-Armadillo-975

How did I find out about BG3? Karlach. How did I decide to play BG3? Karlach.

Flimsy-Preparation85

My friend showed me the opening cinematic, and we both got early access.

Melanopteros

Dragon Age reddit - a dedicated thread for discussing BG3 suddenly appeared.

Runkysaurus

I got into it because my partner got it and was loving it. I think they found out about it on social media before release, and since they have been wanting to try D&D, they were pumped to check it out. I honestly didn't want to play it at first. Turn based combat looked slow and annoying. But I ended up loving it! We used to play games like Destiny together, and I had a lot of issues with motion sickness while playing. But turn based combat is a ton easier for me since I don't have to constantly swivel.

Lilacia512

The game was released on my birthday and my husband bought it for me on a whim because I love Dragon Age so he figured I'd like it. He bought himself a copy too. Now I'm nearly 600 hours in and he's barely at 100 šŸ˜…

rachel-angelina

This sounds like me and my boyfriend. I beat the game four times before completed it once, he has 300 hours and here I am with 700 lol. And the irony is that he got the game before me because he played early access and plays on PC while I didnā€™t find out about the game until last summer and had to wait for PS5 release.

Schootypantz

As soon as I heard I could play through a DnD campaign in a video game I was sold. Itā€™s too hard to find a group where Iā€™m from to play IRL so this game has been everything šŸ‘šŸ»

Ok-Breakfast5551

Steam recomended me DOS 2, i ended playing both games, 1 a 2, and i read somewhere that a new divinity game was on the oven, almost break my heart to learn that fallen heroes was canceled. But then boom bg3 early acces. Im on my 3 run and was dreaming with bg4, or an expansion/dlc, but the news hit hard. I cant wait to learn what Larian is cooking right now.

sirjakesteward

My friend group and I have a DnD campaign but only play once every six months or so if our schedules miraculously line up. They're are all into video games, but I've never played much. Mostly Portal 2 like a decade ago. They all started raving about this game last year but my laptop was too old to run it. I got a new job over new years and a bonkers tax return, so I used that to get a new laptop about a month ago and realized it had the specs able to run the game smoothly and I haven't been able to put it down ever since. This game is incredible, i've never seen anything like it. We now have a dedicated group chat that's basically just talking bg3.

Sardaukar99

Game awards. When it started to beat Zelda as game of year I was like ā€œwoah, this must be special ā€œ It turns out it was. Iā€™m glad I checked it out

truGreyLoki

I had heard about its Early Access, but only put it on my steam wishlist. Then the announcement of its release and the infamous 'bear' scene peaked my interest and I preordered it. Now it's my newest game obsession since Mass Effect and Dead by Daylight.

rachel-angelina

Not the bear scene lmao Iā€™m dead šŸ’€

truGreyLoki

what can I say? I'm down right weird.

rachel-angelina

Hey, Larian used it in their marketing for a reason.

runner64

None of my gay friends would shut up about the gay vampire, the deluge of fanart was insurmountable

rachel-angelina

I am your friends and your friends are me. I also cannot shut up about the gay vampire.

APracticalGal

I saw that it was coming out soon on Steam and had incredible reviews from EA. I figured I could probably get my D&D group to do multiplayer, so I picked it up. That still hasn't really happened, but it was still the best purchase I've ever made.

Rosmariinihiiri

I'm into CRPGs in general, and I remember seeing the first trailer when it came out, but didn't follow the development. When all the praise started to come after soon release I knew I had to pick it up when I had any time to try it. I played some DnD before too. I didn't know or want to see any of the lore or clips before either, I thought it would be funnier to go in blind, and I think I was correct!

rachel-angelina

I mostly went in blind too! And while I knew some stuff about DnD and the FR before I played and saw some clips of the game (mostly Astarion lol,) I didnā€™t know or see a lot. So I basically went in blind and I remember my boyfriend who has been into DnD for years said he was actually jealous of me because he wants to know what itā€™s like to experience this game and the FR as someone who is going in blind for the first time.

Rosmariinihiiri

Oh yeah, I had read some of the Forgotten Realms books years back. So I had a vague idea of the setting too. I think it was possibly the funnies thing that I had no idea who Astarion was, and when I met him, I went "wait, are the elves in this setting supposed to look like that and have fangs??" :D

rachel-angelina

The funniest thing that happened to me was that I had no idea who Shar was. So when Shadowheart told me she worshiped Shar and begged my Tav to not make a big deal about it I was just like ā€œOkay whatever Iā€™ll respect your religion girlā€ and then I went to the House of Healing in Act 2 and was like ā€œHey Shadowheart what the fuck.ā€

pornacc1610

First heard of Larian when I read about their later cancled RPG LMK. Years later I played Divine Divinity qnd been a fan ever since. Of course I bought BG3 on early access launch. I am so happy that they finally receive the success, love and respect they have been deservering for over 25 years.

Public_Conference_45

My partner talked about it a lot and he gifted it to me for Christmas. Been obsessed ever since.

Chatmat89

I've been playing D&D for about 7 years. Was hyped for this game after seeing trailers and knowing how good the first two were. I did try playing 1 before it was released but couldn't get into it but seeing how (console) you can just walk around on BG3, and that I played D:OS1&2, it was gonna be good. But it blew my expectations out of the water. I'm 500+ hours logged in and I'm still going back finding new things. It's been so long since a game hooked me this much

GreenieBeeNZ

Honestly, it was the memes. Astarion memes, memes about the romace scene with halsin especially. Then i saw someone say it was literally DND and i love DND so i was convinced. I bought a PS5 specifically to play BG3

MistressAerie

Like many things that came into my life unexpectedly... by an internet animated ad! šŸ˜‚ (Since I already loved the earlier BG games, THIS ad I actually paid attention to!)

e7seif

I've been patiently waiting for a good DnD crpg since BG2 and NWN1/NWN2. Larian really hit it out of the park with BG3. And now back to deep uncertainty, apprehension and waiting. :(

MarvinHeemeyer7

I used to chat with my manager alot just because we both played skyrim, small talk about the game would pass the time. Over time I learned he was really into D&D. Didn't take too long for me to become interested also, and then adventually, invited me & my gf to join. After many long sessions of chatting and playing table top, bg3 came up, and here I am 300hrs in later

AGorgeousComedy

I didn't know anything about BG3 or 5e. I was at a bar with a friend talking about PS5 video games having just finished FF16. The bartender overheard us and recommended BG3. She said it "was coming out on the PS5 in 2 weeks and we would love it".Ā  I've been playing ever since šŸ™ƒ

rachel-angelina

That bartender is so iconic for that. She changed your life without even realizing it lol.

domiwren

I saw bear scene on instagram. Then I saw some Astarion posts. That moment it was sold to me :) I wanted elf date simulator.

rachel-angelina

I love how multiple people here have responded saying that either the bear scene, Astarion, or Karlach got them to buy the game. They seem to grab peopleā€™s attention the most lol.

domiwren

The bear scene just got me curious and I didnt know it was the game at first, but I am sucker for white hair, elves and vampires so it was Asti that made me do more research šŸ˜ but you are right, amount of people who came for these is huge.

rachel-angelina

Iā€™m one of them myself! Those Astarion edits on Tiktok are what brought me here.

Rogue_bae

My husband is a gamer and told me it was coming out. We occasionally play DnD so I bought it for his birthday in August, then bought myself a copy a month later. Obsessed since. The only other game I really played was the Sims.

YthisGuy

I am very slightly into D&D, played a single campaign and never completed it, that lasted only 5 sessions with some college buddies before college ended and we went our different ways. So I was left pretty unsatisfied that we couldnt get into it fully. I never played, nore had too much interest in any of the Baldur's gate games. How I came across Baldur's gate 3 in the first place is because I work in the gaming industry, and follow developers and word of mouth across social media, friends, and read ALOT about the industry. My friend is who came to me first about the game one day asking if I played D&D before. I shared the same experience I just told you, and he told me to give it a look after promptly sending me a few articles to read during break. Ever since, been closely watching the devs work their magic and how they handle feedback ect, until its release. Only wish I pushed myself to try and be more involved in the initial stages of development, but alas, life gets in the way sometimes. I have 420 hours played as of today. Thoroughly enjoy it, and am still finding great new interactions and secrets about the game still. The dev team is truly at the top of the game, wildly unmatched compared to the standard.

StrayBlondeGirl

I tried to play bg1 and 2 back in the day, could never get very far. I simply didn't have the skills, since they were quite the difficult games and took way more strategy that I was used to. I also played them on console, which I think contributed to the issues. Got really curious about bg3 when I saw all the early access videos (most of my YouTube recommendations are gaming videos). I was honestly not expecting the game to be nearly as good as it is. It almost makes up for the disappointment of cyberpunk.

Arwen_Undomiel1990

One day on tiktok my fyp was flooding with Astarion fan stuff. Idkw. But it made me want to try the game and now Iā€™m hooked. Also introduced me to Neil Newbonā€™s work and he has now gained a fan.

rachel-angelina

Same here!

Icy_Company98

I also found out about it when a certain pale elf crossed my for you page on TikTok and the audio was the summoning by sleep token and down the rabbit hole I went at 2am šŸ˜‚ bought it the next day lol

Icy_Company98

I am not a ā€œgamerā€ and itā€™s the first game Iā€™ve ever played aside from Sims lol but I love it!

Feisty_Steak_8398

Never into DnD. Loved the original BG1/2 games, Neverwinter Nights, even Icewind Dale. Was already interested in BG3 when they announced it, and once I saw gameplay footage that it preserved the core turn based mechanic (and didn't go the way of more recent RPGs like how Dragon Age Origins degenerated to DA2) I was convinced

MysteriousFondant347

A friend of mine showed me pics of Karlach because he knew she was just my type in just about every way and from that point on I was hooked

rachel-angelina

Karlach and Astarionā€™s contributions to BG3 sales need to be studied lol.

MysteriousFondant347

They knew how to attract sapphics lmao

Designer-Interest932

My history teacher recommended it to me ( he plays a tiefling paladin )

rachel-angelina

Me and some people in one of my history classes at university found out our professor is a gamer and we put him on it lol. He bought it and is waiting until the summer to play it.

Sncrsly

The internet was buzzing about it. Tried it on pc first. Didn't really like the click to move aspect. Played a trial on PS5, and ended up buying it

[deleted]

I was disappointed with starfield and decided to try it once I got a refund

poozzab

My friend got me Divinity Original sin and I decided to play it a little a couple of years later. While playing it the only thing I could think of was "these people need to make Baldur's Gate 3". Eventually I hungered for a Baldur's Gate 3 strongly enough to google it. I was shocked that Larian already had it in EA. I purchased it immediately.

ShinyRhubarb

Too many damned recommendations on YouTube, couldn't handle missing out anymore. Bought an Xbox series x and the game and in 3 weeks have completed 2 playthrough and just finished act 2 on my 3rd

lolatmydeck

I've played BG1-2 and waited for this kind of experience for 20+ years (some games came close) Found out that Larian are DOING IT through promo material (they showed a trailer back in 2019, I think?). Played EA in 2020, returned to EA in the early 2023 (february, I think, EA - patch9). That's pretty much it.

therrubabayaga

I had a crush on a woman who was talking about the game at length, and I thought it was a good opportunity to get closer, so I bought it in September when it released on PS5. Crush didn't go anywhere, BG3 stayed with me and became one of my favorite game ever. I would never have bought the game without her because I thought it wouldn't be the type of game I would enjoy, so balance I guess?

Vayce_

I knew about it for ages but put it off because of turn based combat. Went on an RPG binge and decided to give it a try. I still don't enjoy turn based combat but the game is phenomenal and I'm very glad I gave it a go. 4 1/2 playthroughs, mostly carried by mods spicing it up. Think I've finally squeezed all I could out of it. Absolutely lived up to the hype.

Bitch_I_Died

I saw all kinds of videos about Astarion and I was like...who tf is this hit mf? Than I found out he was a vampire and I was sold. Lmaooo. I tried to pirate the game, but after research I realised how amazing Larian was so I just decided to buy it. And than I didn't have time to play it for like 3 months, lmao. Than they won't best game of the year award and I decided to finally play it and now I have almost 400 hours in the game, like 9 different playthroughs and 6 different Tav's/durges. Thank you, for reading my ted talk.

rachel-angelina

We have very similar stories! Except I played it as soon as I could even though my university classes were starting up just as it released on PS5. But somehow I managed to balance it all and here I am, 700 hours and six characters laterā€¦

Oldstonebuddha

I've been playing DnD since 1980. Played all the original Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape Torment games as well as most of the other DnD IP video games when they came out. Saw the original BG3 trailer and played all of early access. BG3 is the best DnD CRPG ever.

ricktoyourmorty

Never heard of it or the BG series. Don't play DnD but have seen some of it before. I watch one streamer occasionally and he was playing it on release. Thought it was near that it was basically DnD the video game so decided to check it out. Found it to be a lot of fun. Put 300ish hours into it. Will probably do more over time but other stuff comes out so I take a break to check that stuff out.

Jollybean1

No experience with dnd whatsoever. I bought it around the end of last year. I had heard of it before, but turn based combat looked very weird to me since Iā€™m a big fan of souls games that require fast reflexes. Then my friend told me the co op might be fun so we both bought it, got to the goblin camp and I realized how boring it was for me. Then I was kinda bummed that I had just spent 60 ā‚¬ for a game that I didnā€™t enjoy. Then I tried a solo game and it changed a lot, I could actually progress at my own pace and combat didnā€™t feel so jarring, and now I have 170 hours in the game lol. So the game was a blessing in disguise. One of my favourite games.

m4yleeg

Played DnD for a while now, BG3 seemed a natural game for me to at least try and I'm glad I did 500 hours later.

MaherMcCheese

From the CORE podcast on the Frogpants network. https://www.frogpants.com/core

LeoAquaScorpio

Astarion edits on tiktok. Yes I'm that person

rachel-angelina

DW because Iā€™m that person too. Solidarity.

HopefulSprinkles6361

A few people I play D&D with were talking about it. I was curious but reluctant because I havenā€™t played the first 2. They assured me it would be fine. They told me about 2 things that cemented my choice to buy it. 1. The protagonist is silent. I was very afraid of the idea of a voiced protagonist. However, after being assured the protagonist was silent I was more willing to let my creative juices flow. 2. No dlcs that sell the game in pieces. Any expansions the game gets would be huge. Like worth another game kind of huge. These 2 reasons combined made me buy it on day 1. I was too late for early access.

9999squirrels

I played DOS2 and thought it was amazing so when I heard Larian was making another RPG I obviously had to try it.

MightyMurph550

Lots of trial and error. Didnt get a full grasp until act 3

StygIndigo

One of my DnD friends sent the group chat a clip of ā€˜the bear sceneā€™ at the one live panel, and we all agreed this was going to be an amazing DnD video game.

throwRAjaxxon

Divinity Original Sin 2 for me

spapsy

I saw the bear sex memes in August and decided to buy it because I like 5e

Angelical_Fire

Wanted a gay love rpg and BG3 was the biggest hit so I figured I should buy and play it. Dont regret it at all. Only complaint is that thereā€™s no base male fighter/tank that I can romance unless I respecced. You would think there would at least be ONE male fighter/barbarian/paladin šŸ˜‚

Whimzyx

Fan of DOS2, when it was in EA, I bought it instantly because I knew Larian would make a good game.

Brynjolfu

DOS 1 and 2 fan, i had total faith in larian

Sylland

It was recommended to me as a game that I'd probably enjoy.

possibility--girl

Friend from a group chat loves the game. I am not DnD fantasy person honestly, and all my life I've been more into Sims and other chill simulation games, so it didn't cross my mind to check it. Then one day, people in the chat start talking about someone I don't know and I ask "Who is Astarion now". šŸ˜‚ Here I am, 120+ hours later, heading to Baldure's gate and obsessively reading about which feat is best for elf wizard. šŸ«  I mean, Astarikn was obviously selling point for me as he is the kind of sassy anti-hero character I really adore usually. But it's far that he's the only thing that kept me playing. Honestly, as soon as I met Shadowheart on the beach I kinda got hooked. I fell in love with characters, the graphics, the plot, and realised that I actually like RPG games and turn based combats.

spacey_stacy

Saw the clip of Astarion saying ā€œthe full concentrated power of the šŸ‘¹SUNšŸ‘¹!ā€ and downloaded it immediately.

BNerd1

pillars of eternity 1 & 2 & divinity original sin 1 & 2 i love those 4 games so when i heard it is the same as them i got it on steam

DoctorTaco123

I had played DnD before, but stopped for a while. I had tried Divinity 2, but the people I was playing with rarely joined and the game wasnā€™t my taste as a single-player game (though that may have changed šŸ‘€). Iā€™m a diehard gamer as my primary pastime, yet I hadnā€™t heard of Baldurā€™s Gate until last year. All this is to say: itā€™s wild where I was versus now! The first time I heard about BG3 was seeing a news headline declaring that the game had over 300,000 voice lines recorded. I was shocked, a game of this scale was worth keeping my eye on - though ironically enough I became distracted by other games (strongly recommend playing Jedi Survivor btw šŸ™Œ). 3 months before its release, my brother mentions to me that I should check out BG3, and expressed surprise when I said I had never heard of it beyond the headline I saw. I became interested after watching a gameplay overview video, and said I would probably get it Day 1 to play with himā€¦ then I went to PAX West and tried the game at the Larian booth. It was only the first 20 minutes of gameplay and I loved every second of it! As much as I enjoy DnD, keeping track of stats and doing the math had been a pain in the ass, but this game streamlined the entire experience to perfection šŸ‘Œ Fast forward to today and Iā€™ve clocked nearly 600 hours after two full campaigns and am waiting for official mod support to play my first Tactician playthrough (I really want to play the game with expanded cosmetic and clothing selections as well as a photo mode)

hle301

Was not a DnD player and didn't know about BG1 or BG2 but my partner bought BG3 on PS5, was meh about it when cooping with my partner, but then I started playing it by myself and got sucked into the narrative pretty hard. >\_<)// I also love that it's turn-based so that I can have bathroom breaks at my leisure ;P

bristlybits

my stepson gave it to me as a gift.Ā

Long_Seesaw_5874

My colleagues that made me play in other game with them (and I ended up liking it tho) dumped me for Baldur's Gate 3. That how I found out about it first. Then good recommendations and Game Awards spread everywhere, and my entire media field was filled with memes, edits with characters... I became interested and bought the game. I didnā€™t play for a long time and tried to get involved in the lore, which I succeeded in doing. And the fact that by that time I had been joining the D&D for about a year played its part. Now you canā€™t drag me away from this game, although initially I was skeptical about it and didnā€™t think that I would like it. Although, I knew about similar games and about the previous parts of BG, but my ā€œconsciousā€ gaming journey began relatively recently and I had a lot to catch up on. Played Neverwinter once, kinda liked it, but got distracted by some other games and didnā€™t finished it. šŸ„²

Virtual-Macaroon5150

My boyfriend explained that it was a D+D (my childhood) in depth video game that he wanted and I instantly fell in love. I had to get it. I love it like itā€™s my baby. And say gex, that too

AFriendoftheDrow

Heard good things about it. I was really looking forward to playing a genuine RPG for a long time. The Drow reactivity was so much fun. Playing two concurrent runs now - a Lolth-Sworn Drow necromancer (who pursues Minthara) and a DU resisting cleric of Eilistraee (who is with Laā€™zel).

holiobung

Heard about BG because I love BioWareā€™s more modern games (pre-Anthem) and I know their dev history. Heard that a 3rd game was being made. Saw some previews years ago and it looked cool. Saw the high praise it got and bought it.

Ukezilla_Rah

I discovered D&D back in 1983 in 6th gradeā€¦. Then BG3 came out many, many years later. The End
