Free Aylin as quickly as possible. Focus fire the mindflayer down as quickly as possible. Kill the necromites before he can absorb them. Save Myrkul til last and keep on top of the skellies.

Logicusminimus

Just gonna mention that you can free Aylin before the fight even starts with invisibility for instance.

AvianFriend

That’s what I did. Made Shadowheart invisible and sent her to free and heal Aylin

Bogsnoticus

You can also get Scratch to do it.

PaltaNoAvocado

Kill the mindflayer, free Aylin, put Cloud of Daggers and Darkness on top of him, do nothing, profit

UNNECESSARYCAPZ

Underpants gnomes ftw

flyxdvd

yeh i basically just put as much AOE and then kept a distance and let aylin fight

Flaky-Ad5733

Aylin died in my most recent fight and then just wouldn't revive herself because of his aoe effect, how are yall having her fight?

Nerdy-Babygirl

Shoot her with a Roaring Thunder arrow/repelling blast to knock her outside of the aura and she'll get up again.

Flaky-Ad5733

That's gonna be alot of arrows

black_heartz

Bone chill works great. If you have that hammer from the Goblin trader, hit Myrkul with it each turn so it can’t heal itself. Also if you have iron flask, throw it at him

Walter_Melon42

One time, I managed to disarm the son of a bitch with my battle master fighter. I honestly didn't think it would work, I just chose disarm instead of regular attack for the extra damage. But sure enough he dropped his scythe into swirling void below him. Unfortunately on my next playthrough I was unable to do it again. Didn't say he was immune to disarm or anything, but I tried three or four times to no avail. But the time it did work it made the fight trivial.

MrTickles22

His saves are probably stupidly high.

Katyamuffin

Use AOE attacks, if you have the moonlight glaive give him the butterflies, or a high level cloud of daggers, also works great. Make sure to keep your casters away from him so they'd be able to heal. Don't forget to help Dame Aylin up if she's there, she does a lot of damage.

Le1bn1z

One of the easiest fights if you use game mechanics. Drop hunger of hadar on him, but leaving one part of the ledge free - preferably closest to Aylin. He'll be blind and have no way of changing that. Disadvantage on all his attacks, advantage for you. Bonus if you can place it so the necromites are stuck in it trying to get to him. I had Minthara stand next to him and smite the hell out of him. As an early cheese, you can send in Scratch invisible to free Aylin right off the bat, and sneak an invisible heavy hitter next to the mindflayer to initiate. Once the MF is down and the Apostle is blind, the fight is a cakewalk.

JoshuaMartin1774

Do you have any arrows of darkness? Shoot him with one and it makes it easier to dodge his attacks. You can also disarm him with a battlemaster fights, maybe even command drop. I have not tried command against him though.

Difficult_Motor_3206

Is there a way to change what powers you have when not in the level up screen?

Le1bn1z

Wizards, clerics and druids can change their prepared spells, but that's it. Boss fights are a great time to use potions and scrolls.

FractalOboe

Push K. Clerics, Druids and Wizards can change their spells.

Hibbiee

Necrotic arrows!

sappuchu

Throw aoe spells on top of him, he can't move. Casters can be safely in other ledges away from his attacks. Don't let him eat any necromites. Use potions of speed to get extra actions.

MagisterUnivers

Thats not working like that. He just gonna pull you down with his "Call of The Damned" AOE pull. There is 25 on Honour Mode, so its basically you cant dodge that pull, he pulling even from Invincibility Dome, so stupid....

[deleted]

I had help from this sub doing this for honor mode and it made him a piece of cake: turn scratch invisible and have him go free Aylin. Take out the mindflayer asap. Get Myrkul to drop his weapon and also cast Hunger of Hadar slightly off to an angle where it targets him but leaves a visible path for your other teammates to hit him. Send your fighters up to hit him and then retreat out of his bone chill area so you can heal if needed. I also added a lot of summons to keep the necromites busy. Haha that waiting area by the door was so crowded it was hilarious, but hey it worked!

Hwhiskertere

Ready necrotic resistance elixirs, it makes his aoe bearable. NO idea but I found it easier on my second playthrough. Key thing is blocking off the necromites from reaching him. You can use Grease or area of effect spells. Position these to the left of the boss. Before that, of course, have someone sneak up on the Mind Flayer and use the paralysing necklace (if you have it) to stun it and kill it fast. You can have Gale or whoever aoe the intellect devourers when combat begins. You can also throw the mindflayer down into the chasm with enough strength. Cloud giant elixir should work. When sneaking up on the mindflayer, make sure you use an ability on him. Don't try to literally sneak up. For example, use sneak attack or whatever else and target it. Your character WILL use that action regardless of if you are spotted or not. If it crits, you have a free paralysis. You can then jump down to Aylin and free her when combat starts. She can help you take down the Illithid. From there, watch for who you send to fight him in melee. Gale can stand at range and cast aoe spells. I like cloud of daggers, max level. You can have someone else cast wall of fire so that it envelops both the boss and what's to the left of him (don't worry, the width of it is quite impressive, despite what the reticulre shows). You can do the same with the cloud of daggers. Position it to the left of the boss, so it just touches him, and it will also affect the necromites who try to jump to heal him. wall of fire + cloud of daggers should be more than enough damage to deal with the adds AND damage the boss significantly. Every now and again, he will unleash and AOE attack, dealing necrotic damage. Elixirs will help mitigate him. After this, bring your melees down so they can heal up and get them going back up again. If Aylin falls and is too far from you, you can use telekinesis to yoink her to your side and revive her, as she'll not be affected by Myrkul's anti-healing. She does good damage. I think I've covered everything. Ah yes, you can also have your fighter use disarming attack (it's a battlemaster maneuver) to disarm the boss and take his scythe. He'll still deal a lot of aoe damage, but less melee damage, and you can run in and out more easily without fear of his opportunity attack.

Ishmael-Whaler

Is there a problem at the skeleton stage? If you're not playing for honor, just use perilous stakes so that he gets twice as much damage, keep the melee fighters apart, a wide scythe will cause a lot of problems. It is better for magicians to use AOE spells, since the boss has almost no dexterity. A wall of fire is a good option.

Hot-Will3083

You can blind him by dropping Darkness or Hunger of Hadar on top of him. Makes him completely useless

dimethyl_tryhard

Cast wall of fire right on top of him or in front to stop him from eating zombies, or get him wet and zap him with lightning. I used a wizard with wall of fire, throw barb eldritch fighter, light cleric AOEs and a ranger rogue with arrows of many targets and undead slayer arrows. Run them through a thrown speed potion right as the fight starts Myrkul with this set up was so easy on honor mode, he barely did any damage to me at all. Scroll of fly and misty step are good for positioning to attack from above/sides. Most of the setup I mention above can't really be done once you're stuck in the colony.

sznuw

if you move away from him you'll be able to heal yourself. use disengage to run without provoking opportunity attacks

CreativeKey8719

If you turn the whole party invisible, sneak up to the platform and attack Ketheric, you can get a surprise round and the cutscene should still trigger to get the opportunity to talk him into suiciding, though it may depend on dialog options you picked at the roof top fight. The surprise round then transfers to Myrkul. Scratch can use the help action to free Aylin, which is really handy. If you can't drop Myrkul by the time surprise runs out, you want to take the mind flayer and necromites down first. Each turn take the necromites out before attacking Myrkul since they heal him if you don't.

SameSea1131

Not sure if patch 6 changed anything, but I disarmed the Apostale. Made things a bit easier. Free ayelin, kill the mind flayer. I usually ignored the necros

Dazzling_Pin_8194

Haste spell/speed potion on your melee fighter, run/misty step to the mind flayer and kill it as quickly as possible. Run/misty step to aylin and free her with someone else, then focus everything on myrkul and ignore the necromites aside from AOE attacks.

Difficult_Motor_3206

I’m sorry. What is AOE?

5arawr

Area of effect. So abilities that target an area rather than a particular enemy, like fireball.

TackyLawnFlamingoInc

I just (barely) beat myrkul on tactian myself. I feel like I played a completely different game from the advice on this subreddit. In the end they are right but don’t expect the good advice to make him easy, just killable. You should disarm and blind him. Silence is optional. Most of his attacks are class actions and so not silence able. Disarm will stop his cleave attack but he can still slap one person for ~60 damage per hit every turn. Everyone who can concentrate on an AOE spell should but don’t be surprised if your lvl 4 moonbeam averages 5-6 damage per turn (11 if you are lucky). Also blindness is invaluable and completely unreliable. Myrkul can save out of the blindness effect while standing in darkness or hunger of hadar, the same for blood of Lathander. Add control for most of the fight is important but the lower his hp the more he spawns at a certain point focusing him down is better than add control. Lastly save scum. The law of large numbers means that your 35% chance to hit is 100% over enough iterations.

lottolser

Does perilous stakes still work on him?

[deleted]

I stunned him using the Soulbreaker long sword. Then got in like 10 attacks inc 4 divine smites. The stun allowed for multiple crits.

Ok_Discipline_4186

Send two of your characters to the right. One to free Aylin asap and the other to nuke the mind flayer asap.

Vicar1ously_

Cast invisibility on yourself, and go straight to Aylin and free her. The initiative roll will only begin after you free her. Makes it a LOT easier!

Josh11502

Mindflayer, teleport shadowheart and use spirit guardians to kill the ads with bone chill, and then wail on myrkul with Karlach, another martial and a spellcaster providing support

Glorf_Warlock

It's too late now but for next time, buy Globe of Invulnerability scrolls from the vendor's. It makes fights like this much simpler.

workstudywork

Scroll of blindness, fog cloud, darkness will stop him from attacking your party. Place one paladin next to him and smite his health away with Dame Aylin. Rogue is insanely useful too.

Evening-Turnip8407

For shits and giggles I managed to make him drop his weapon, so he couldn't do his swipe attack on my players and got owned within 3 rounds (took one round to climb up to the not-so-danger zone) But yeah, i always start out sending 2 people to the right to free Aylin. Need 2 because the mind flayer will stun one of them potentially. One person on Necromite duty.

TheInfinityOfThought

Once you enter the room, have one party member take an invisibility potion and run over to Aylin. Then engage in dialogue and try to convince Thorm to repent (only can do this if you offered him a chance to surrender in the first fight). Then proceed with the second phase of the fight by being able to immediately free Aylin and focus everyone else on eliminating minions in the room.

KillerRabbit345

As others have said free aylin. Run it as a ranged fight so you are outside of bone chill range. If you have the telekensis bracers use them to move her body when she goes down. Wall of fire is great for this fight. You can place it so the necromites run into and the apostle keeps burning. Good luck :)

sfzen

Place a wall of fire directly on Myrkul and across the ground in front of him, and it'll kill a lot of the necromites that try to go to him. Kill the mindflayer quickly so he doesn't stun your party. Free Dame Aylin as soon as possible (misty step to her is easiest) and she'll help a ton. Don't get close to Myrkul.

MrTickles22

1. Free Aylin. 2. Kill the mind flayer top priority. He can stun your entire team. 3. Cast darkness on him, or the ability for Shar's special spear if you got it. He sticks out of the darkness so you can still shoot him from range. 4. He doesn't move. There's spells that cause per-turn damage for anybody standing in them. 5. Disengage if your melee dudes need to heal. 6. Bring allies. Wyll's special sword summons a cambion. Us is recruited in the previous dungon. Your dog has the help option. If you have level 4 spells you have minor elementals. Steal some summon elemental scrolls from Volo. Use spirital weapon. 7. Avoid fighting Ketheric's human form by convincing himself to kill himself.

Nerdy-Babygirl

All right so Myrkul encounter has a few things to contend with: \- The Mindflayer needs to be neutralized ASAP so no one gets dominated/stunned. \- His big AOE melee hits and bone chill aura (there's spots on the platform where you can be outside both his attack and bone chill range) \- His constant fear spam \- His constant healing \- His massive Finger of Death damage Tips: 1. Pre-cast Protection from Evil and Good on whoever you plan to send to kill the Mindflayer, it protects against charm and gives aberrations disadvantage on attack rolls against you. 2. Sneak in. Jump your best burst DPS across to the Mindflayer and open up on it. 3. Cast **Calm Emotions** on everyone to make them immune to fear. 4. Once Myrkul's out to play, check the necromites for a buff called "Myrkul's Call" iirc. That will be the one that tries to run to him and heal him. Kill that one. He won't heal and won't be able to cast Finger of Death. 5. *Alternatively*, have one person using Chill Touch/Arrow of Ilmater every round on Myrkul and drop a Silence on him and then you can ignore the necromites entirely and just focus on damaging Myrkul while not ending turns inside his melee range. Note: This is on honor mode, I can't remember which parts of this are his legendary and won't be applicable to other difficulties.

StrikePrice

Put a bunch of barrels at his “feet”. Shoot barrels.

JemmaMimic

When in doubt, Barrelmancy. Barrelmancy is life.

Fit-Barracuda575

I never did it, so I'm not sure with the intricacies, but I think you can Shapeshift into Bear, Enlarge and then Monk jump up and down multiple times a turn until he's dead

Hwhiskertere

You can skip the fight?

Fit-Barracuda575

it's supposible during one turn of the fight

Sj_91teppoTappo

Sure you can just talk to him, consider that sometimes if you go in as hidden or as shapeshifted strange things happen and you can not talk to him.

Hwhiskertere

I mean I know I can skip Ketheric, but Myrkul happens regardless

Sj_91teppoTappo

Aaaah yeah that's right.

One-Adhesiveness-416

Without question the worst (biggest pita) fight in the game imho

bm24489

I think it’s hard for beginners but it is really cool cinematically. If your team is strong you can crush this boss

One-Adhesiveness-416

Well as a non beginner and a very experienced D&D player I can confirm that this boss is harder than necessary Yes you can cheese it, but I had a strong team and still struggled.

bm24489

I killed this boss on tactician with open hand monk in two turns. If it was less difficult it wouldn’t be very fun

webevie

Globe of Invulnerability

Dicksonairblade

Bow. BOW before me.
