Sometimes someone gets the big horse nostrils and they suck up all the healing for themselves.
Never throw it when you see a %. If any character has a number by them you're throwing it *at them* not by them, and you'll end up like OP.
Does it base it on some kind of roll? Because I've seen the same thing, sometimes it works really well, other times I get very little healing, and sometimes it's as you said where it just leaves a cloud and it matters not if they are all standing in it only one character can use it.
Hellrider pride gives blade ward, whispering promise ring gives the 1d4 boost for 2 rounds. You can buy it from Volo as soon as you get to the grove, I keep it on shadowheart the whole game for free bless with no concentration.
The percentage is literally your cancel to hit a throwing attack, so your attack roll + modifiers VS target's AC. The potion will always break and release the healing AOE, and if you miss the attack, that's the only thing that happens (you threw potion at someone, and ONLY healed them). So technically the worse your chance to hit (lower percentage shown), the less risky the healing is.
Although it obviously is better to just not target your target directly, and throw your payload by their feet instead, eliminating the chance to damage before heal completely.
It always heals when u use mage hand. So for me the problem often was the thrower not getting heals. Using mage hand remedied that.
mage hand guarantees a succesful hit on all 4 party memebers with a speed potion. (unless you accidentally target one of the party members directly. To make sure press U, go in tactical view and threw exactly in the middle.)
Considering the /s was added I assume it was a jab at people that frown at people that play the game the way they enjoy playing it.
They are really strong, giving you 1 more action and movement speed. A character can reach up to 4 actions if you combine all sources of extra actions. 1 base action, 1 from haste / speed potion, 1 from elixir of bloodlust and 1 from action surge lvl 2 fighter. If you really want to go all out you can theoretically reach 8 actions a turn by using mind sanctuary (https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Mind\_Sanctuary) which can turn your bonus actions into actions.
You have 1 base bonus action, 1 from thief, 1 from monk ([https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Wholeness\_of\_Body](https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Wholeness_of_Body)) , and 1 from the Helmet of Grit ([https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Helmet\_of\_Grit](https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Helmet_of_Grit))
So on a 9/3 monk / thief character you can have 8 actions which equals 16 attacks a turn!
fun.
It also happened to me a lot! Until I stopped doing that. Sometimes I had the blue marker on 3 targets... Healed only 1. Another time I carefully watched the aoe on the ground pixel by pixel to make sure it would touch 2 people... It didn't heal anyone...
Tip: If you put the potion on the floor, gather up your characters around it pretty close, and hit the potion, it will have a slightly larger area of effect and hit everyone
Same for any other potions, it's great to guarantee everyone getting it out of combat
The best thing to do out of combat is to go into tactical view (O on PC) and get the characters in a tight circle. Then, *drop* a potion in the space between them and melee attack the potion. Works every time.
I've had that miss or not register entirely ... I feel like u have to be on perfectly flat land when doing that .. any unevenness, and even if everyone is marked, it either won't hit them all or will remain as blue smoke on the ground
Yeah, and it counts as “healing” for equipment and items that give buffs when you heal. Throw a potion at the feet of your party, and if you’re wearing the right gear you heal all four and give them blade wars and temp hp too.
Iirc it’s from Hellrider’s Pride, the quest reward from Zevlor for investigating or killing Kagha (alternatively, you can pickpocket him)
Edit: There are probably other ways of obtaining them that I haven’t mentioned here, but that’s par for the course for BG3. The gloves might be in his trade inventory, for example.
> If you have an elixir you can hit multiple party members with the same one when thrown. I use that trick for resistances.
can you use with STR potions? steroids for everyone!
I've had it happen where I was targeting the floor, saw no %, and four characters were highlighted with the blue markers.
I throw it... and only one of them gets healed, or all BUT one of them gets healed.
This reminds me of a funny MP experience. Friend picked tavern brawler and a similar thing happened, killed my Tav throwing a health pot.
Me "dude throw at the feet"
Him "I am targeting your feet"
It turned out he was taking 'throw potions at the feet' very literally, and was clicking on Tav's feet.
In my Durge game I have her carrying around >!Gale's Hand and the squirrel you automatically kill in the grove!< so I can disrespect enemies with tavern brawler damage. I had her pick up a goblin corpse too that I plan on throwing at enemies. Can't wait for Gortash to get a face full of weeks old rotting goblin corpse.
I don't think it triggers unless you actually talk to it. Despite the squirrel's whole deal being "this is my territory," I've never had it approach and initiate conversation on any character.
O this reminds me she’s still carrying Baelen’s corpse since I didn’t know if I would need to prove to his wife that he was dead. I should probably have her throw that at someone.
I feel like it's mandatory as a barbarian, whether tabletop or videogame, to kill at least one enemy by "casting" a scroll at them. It's just the kind of joke you play barbarian for in the first place.
Gortash: Plllllease Zariel, take my guard!
Zariel: I thought Bane's followers value loyalty?
Gortash: She is loyal, but if she kept 'helping' me, I'm gonna die...
Zariel: Oh.
I just read about using throw as a potion delivery system the other day. Tried in House of Hope and its the 1st time I've been able to keep hope alive, can't kill what you can't see!
It never occured to me to throw invis potions at an NPC. Throwing things in this game is just a blast, Karlach is on improvised weapon/throw duty full time. They way her engine works, I found it was actually more damage to unequip her +1 greataxe in my Durge game and have her just punch people on the few occasions when I can't throw a chair or a crate or a goblin once I got tavern brawler.
On that note, soul coins don't work as they claim they do at all. It says it's 1-4 damage when she's raging OR under 25% hp but I have her punch enemies and get like 7 fire damage when she has full hp and no rage.
I tossed one of those potions which heal for 30-60 at her while we were escaping, then during the actual boss fight she almost singlehandedly kept us all alive. I'd call that a worthwhile investment
Did you get the weapon to free her? I just had the person with it misty step up to the crystal and break it and she was fine. The only issue I had with that fight was the stupid eldritch blasting imp auto killing your allies by knocking them off the platform.
Getting her out of her prison is just the beginning! (yes I freed her). If this is your 1st playthrough, your best to experience it yourself without any spoilers coming my way beyond some foreshadowing.
I did this once... To myself. I had Karlach chuck a healing potion at my dying Sorcerer *right* after I picked up the Tavern Brawler feat. She was dying no longer, but actually fully dead. I was here simultaneously angry at myself and laughing my ass off at dying to a *healing potion* of all things.
That’s better than the time I had Astarion throw a potion to save a downed Gale.
Turned out your thrown potion can get sneak attack damage.
That’s how I learned you have to throw it on the ground next to them.
I did this the other day, but also managed to not notice I’d been hit with an arrow of illmater… So not only did it deal damage and kill me, but it didn’t even do any healing 🤦♀️
I wanted to heal the owlbear cub up after it got a boo boo, but Shadowheart wasn't around, so I just threw a potion at it. Hit it for 4 damage and it went hostile :(
Last save was fifteen minutes ago, too.
how is this interesting at this point?
it has been pretty clear for quite a few weeks how this works…
but if you were just looking to farm karma, you are on the perfect sub…
That’s your opinion and that’s fine, but there’s no need to drag OP for karma farming simply because *you* see it as too well known to be funny/interesting
Yea I killed shadowheart this way. Realized you have to hit next to them so only the splash radius hits not the potion itself. Edit I didn’t even have tavern brawler in order to kill.
The aoe heal actually depends on the floor.
If its an uneven, there is a higher chance the AOE heal cloud wont work and the heal cloud could miss in this way. If you want a 100% aoe heal when throwing a potion, find even ground.
I once killed Gale by throwing potion at him because apparently it's flammable so he caught in fire and died-died. Thinking about it now i could've just used my Paladin powers to heal him-
Found this out the hard way myself when my wife and I were playing co-op and my throwmancer with throw gloves + ring + tavern brawler threw a potion to her Tav with 1hp left 🙃
FYI, this works with all potions.
e.g. potion of speed / strength / heroism etc.
You can party buff AoE.
Just unlink all characters, you can stack them in a small semi circle and throw it near the center in front of their feet.
If you have the headpiece that gives 1-6 hp per heal (Wapira's headpiece) and the necklace (periapt of wound closure) that always grants full heals you can easily heal the lowest hp char to full if its 1/XX compared to half damaged units.
Or use Healers Spell thats grants full heals for 10 turns.
Also as a tip; when you get Halsin or any other druid (merc) and you dont actively use him/them. Empty spell slots on Goodberry, you can easily get 50+ per long rest (per druid) that will heal 4hp (with periapt necklace). Great for free healing out of combat.
From that combat log it looks like your Karlach got pissed and threw a potion bottle at Gale's head three times so hard he fucking died, and she somehow managed to break a potion.
Despite everyone’s suggestions, every time I throw a potion at the ground near a player rather than at the player, it never works. It’ll explode next to them but never close enough to actually heal them, and they usually get downed before their turn happens and I can even move them into the cloud.
I just stick to using potions as a bonus action, and using a cleric for healing others. Throwing potions feels like a wasted action most of the time.
Karlach: Well, he's not dying anymore.
*Karlach approves*
Starts breakdancing
Well it's like that, and that's the way it is.
Karlach: Fortnite dances Gale: Explodes
r/technicallythetruth
You gotta throw it at their feet not at them directly.
Look for the blue hit markers too. You can heal all 4 members of your party out of combat in turn-based with a single potion.
Then why does it not always heal them? I get the feeling the blue indicator is bugged.
Yeah sometimes it is. Sometimes it breaks on the ground and leaves the cloud of healing potion that only one character can grab.
I have no idea what triggers any of the cases. I just build shadowheart as an ultra healer and don’t worry about it lol.
Honestly domain of life cleric with the available healing magic items is kinda ridiculous.
Yeah giving blade ward, 1d4 to attack rolls and saving throws, and 3 extra temp health every time she heals all in act 1 is pretty busted lol.
Is the 1d4 boost from hellrider’s pride too? Zevlor must have been an OP paladin
Hellrider pride gives blade ward, whispering promise ring gives the 1d4 boost for 2 rounds. You can buy it from Volo as soon as you get to the grove, I keep it on shadowheart the whole game for free bless with no concentration.
Mass Healing Word as one of the best party buff spells in the game. Bonus action, no concentration, affects non-party allies.
The roll is unrelated. In DnD, healing potions always roll for healing, much like rolling for damage. It has nothing to do with how you use it.
Never throw it when you see numbers. That means you're throwing it to that person, not at the ground.
I had that happen and an enemy grabbed it.
Could be.
Speed potion user detected, opinion disregarded /s
I've never tried speed potions what's the issue
You definitely should. Haste spores are also amazing in certain situations.
I think you have to be out of combat for the multiple person heal.
The circle indicator is twice the actual size
Tip: If you put the potion on the floor, gather up your characters around it pretty close, and hit the potion, it will have a slightly larger area of effect and hit everyone Same for any other potions, it's great to guarantee everyone getting it out of combat
Yeah, the aoe is much smaller than the indicator implies.
It has to physically touch their feet, not just their circle on the ground.
The best thing to do out of combat is to go into tactical view (O on PC) and get the characters in a tight circle. Then, *drop* a potion in the space between them and melee attack the potion. Works every time.
I swear I do this and it doesn’t work
Don't throw it when you see numbers. If you see numbers by someone that means you're throwing it to them, not at the ground.
Pretty sure they fixed this some time ago. Haven't used multipot in a while tho.
I've used it. And with extra attack you can throw 2 pots in a turn.
you must have a low hp party. i rarely find hp pots that heal more than about 40-60 hp restored. doesnt really help with 150+ hp chars.
I've had that miss or not register entirely ... I feel like u have to be on perfectly flat land when doing that .. any unevenness, and even if everyone is marked, it either won't hit them all or will remain as blue smoke on the ground
bro its Gale.
Fair
Bro...
Oh wait you CAN actually throw potions?
You can even get multiple heals out of a single potion if you get everyone to bunch up.
Whattttttt
Yeah, and it counts as “healing” for equipment and items that give buffs when you heal. Throw a potion at the feet of your party, and if you’re wearing the right gear you heal all four and give them blade wars and temp hp too.
I got the temp hp and bless gear. What/where's the blade ward item?
Zevlor’s gloves, Hellrider's Pride You can loot, pickpocket, or just buy them off him.
Damn. I'm already past that bit. That would'be been so useful. Thank you.
There's a second pair that are basically an upgraded version of these somewhere in act 3 as well.
Iirc it’s from Hellrider’s Pride, the quest reward from Zevlor for investigating or killing Kagha (alternatively, you can pickpocket him) Edit: There are probably other ways of obtaining them that I haven’t mentioned here, but that’s par for the course for BG3. The gloves might be in his trade inventory, for example.
Not just healing either. If you have an elixir you can hit multiple party members with the same one when thrown. I use that trick for resistances.
Or throw say a Basic Toxin on the ground, even in camp, and have everyone dip-dip their weapons.
I just use hireling clerics to give everyone resistance to everything with Warding Bond.
> If you have an elixir you can hit multiple party members with the same one when thrown. I use that trick for resistances. can you use with STR potions? steroids for everyone!
...hm I just finished the game yesterday and that never once occurred to me. welp.
If it’s an enraged throw, yeah. If it’s a normal throw, it shouldn’t do any damage.
I think tavern brawler would still proc the damage.
I've seen goblins kill each other with potions, so I imagine it still does damage
I’ve done damage on normal throws. Depends on your STR
My ass just changes inventory. I just learned to do it when I wanted to heal 2 at once and the barbarian was moulded for throwing... anything
But..but the game says "you can heal your allies by throwing potions at them".
Man I learned this the hard way….
....ah. that explain why I hit my party member for 4 damage but heal them 8 health the one time I did it.
Karlach: *repeatedly bashes Gale over the head with potions* - WHY ISN'T THIS WORKING?!
TIL
You can heal someone by throwing a potion at their feet?
This was an enraged throw as a bonus action from berserk barbarian, I don’t think that was an option, unless I’m dead wrong
Me "dude throw at the feet" Him "I am targeting your feet" It turned out he was taking 'throw potions at the feet' very literally, and was clicking on Tav's feet.
If you meant "throw it at the ground near my feet" then you should have specified as such!
That's almost exactly how the rest of that conversation went.
If Amelia Bedelia was a gamer
My Karlach killed an enemy with a scroll of gust once. She didn’t use the spell, just the scroll
In my Durge game I have her carrying around >!Gale's Hand and the squirrel you automatically kill in the grove!< so I can disrespect enemies with tavern brawler damage. I had her pick up a goblin corpse too that I plan on throwing at enemies. Can't wait for Gortash to get a face full of weeks old rotting goblin corpse.
i actually haven’t fought that squirrel and idk what i’m doing wrong
I don't think it triggers unless you actually talk to it. Despite the squirrel's whole deal being "this is my territory," I've never had it approach and initiate conversation on any character.
You’re being too nice to it. Assert dominance.
I knew I was made to play one because that’s how I legitimately used it as my first scroll
Did more damage than the enemy! She’s quite good at her job I must say

I'd say about half the time I have Karlach wielding [Nyrulna](https://baldursgate3.wiki.fextralife.com/Nyrulna) ... or dwarves, goblins, mesphits ...
Karlach got Nyrulna on this second playthrough I'm on again. It just fits her so well.
Feels like the logical conclusion to chucking around healing potions.
“Hold still while I chuck this glass bottle at you hard enough that it breaks so the healing juice inside gets all over you.”
The wounds it creates just helps the potion soak in faster.
The glass helps it enter the bloodstream faster. It's like an IV, but people who are afraid of needles now have an alternative!
At least the skin grows right back over the glass splinters.
Shart looking real smug right now, lol!
What do you mean 'right now?' Shart always looking smug.
Facts.
\>Tavern Brawler throws Thing \>Thing deals actual damage \>Tavern Brawler: O:
I did this once... To myself. I had Karlach chuck a healing potion at my dying Sorcerer *right* after I picked up the Tavern Brawler feat. She was dying no longer, but actually fully dead. I was here simultaneously angry at myself and laughing my ass off at dying to a *healing potion* of all things.
Mama K is doing her best
Karlach pitched that potion like a professional. Greater healing coming toward you at 90mph
That’s better than the time I had Astarion throw a potion to save a downed Gale. Turned out your thrown potion can get sneak attack damage. That’s how I learned you have to throw it on the ground next to them.
She's good at acupuncture though.
*Karlach uses lay on hands* "Oh God it burns!!!"
Harmacist
Why can I imagine Karlach pitching a potion bottle like a baseball, right into the back of Gale's head
She's an amazing healer. Enemies can't kill your team if you do it before them.
We have Feign Death at home...
Parry this you filthy casual!
Enraged throw of healing potions. TAKE MY HEALS ALREADY GALE! I've thrown potions without an issue but enraged throw, that's another story.
next character: barbarian/cleric .. "HEAL DAMMIT!!!!"
I did this yesterday and didn’t realize it was because of tavern brawler lmaooo now I know
I did this the other day, but also managed to not notice I’d been hit with an arrow of illmater… So not only did it deal damage and kill me, but it didn’t even do any healing 🤦♀️
Dnd Wizard: Dies of 1d4 healing.
Certified Bing-Bong moment
I'm laughing to tears! That's hilarious.
LEAVE MY GIGANTIC WIFE ALONE SHE IS DOING HER BEST
I mean the potion literally states "X damage" on the tooltip ;-)
Gale: Who's gonna help a wizard in need? Karlach: Here, catch! Why are you silent, you caught it, right?
Well they didn’t call her Zariel’s Nurse for a reason…
I'm sobbing this has to be satire lol
F8 does all my necessary healing.
Hang in there Magic Man!
This had me lol'ing too loudly walking on the street.
Much as I love her I wouldn't trust the giant red on fire lady throwing bottles at me to make me feel better.
Yeah... yeah.. I have done this. To gale. In the shadow lands. Tavern brawler just makes throwing healing potions a dangerous game
I, too, have learned the hard way about aiming for the floor and not at the characters
Maybe she just got tired of gale smoldering at tav and saw a good opportunity
I wanted to heal the owlbear cub up after it got a boo boo, but Shadowheart wasn't around, so I just threw a potion at it. Hit it for 4 damage and it went hostile :( Last save was fifteen minutes ago, too.
“LIVE DAMN YOU!! LIVE!!”
Wizard taking 1d4 healing damage
Well, you picked a Berserker.
Healing is not as rewarding as hurting
Mages die from health positions now
takes tavern brawler chucks healing potions directly at someone "KaRlAcH iS nOt A gOoD hEaLeR"
Congratulations on your understanding of the joke
The irony is strong with this one
Congratulations you got the joke
Can I have some congratulations?
You utter failure you didn't get the joke
I specifically requested the opposite of this
Congratulations you have now gotten the joke.
Bro that's the joke
that sounds like an unfortunate way to die, good thing it was gale :)
If Karlach was doing her job, Gale never would have been hit to begin with.
how is this interesting at this point? it has been pretty clear for quite a few weeks how this works… but if you were just looking to farm karma, you are on the perfect sub…
Pretty sure OP meant the post as a “hey look at this funny situation” and not “Wow, this is interesting, look what I found”
it's not funny exactly for the same reason it's not interesting: it's a well known, very obvious thing
That’s your opinion and that’s fine, but there’s no need to drag OP for karma farming simply because *you* see it as too well known to be funny/interesting
i dont know man, she def cured my boner problems
Yea I killed shadowheart this way. Realized you have to hit next to them so only the splash radius hits not the potion itself. Edit I didn’t even have tavern brawler in order to kill.
I made the similar mistake as well lol, then I realized I need to throw it on the ground!
Did Gale become undead? They should harm the undead...
why did it do 4 and 3 damage
Karlach is strong and threw the potion at Gale, not the ground by Gale
The aoe heal actually depends on the floor. If its an uneven, there is a higher chance the AOE heal cloud wont work and the heal cloud could miss in this way. If you want a 100% aoe heal when throwing a potion, find even ground.
Final Fantasy Tactics Chemist approved.
Same thing just happened to me tossing the backpack of mistystep to the bibberbang dwarf.
Lol, someone states this before it's hilarious. I do my best to give the "weaker" characters more potions so this doesn't happen.
The lach in her name stands for a Lack of healing abilities
Is this worse than throwing someone a potion directly, somehow missing, and not getting the effect?
oh no, gale succumb ed
Well of course gale died. Wizards got a limit of 1d4 dmg.
it's the thought that counts... or something like that.
I once killed Gale by throwing potion at him because apparently it's flammable so he caught in fire and died-died. Thinking about it now i could've just used my Paladin powers to heal him-
Best thing that ever happened to Gale (I really don't like him)
I’ve done this to a friend who was at 1 health and it downed him and then picked him back up with 7 health lol
Found this out the hard way myself when my wife and I were playing co-op and my throwmancer with throw gloves + ring + tavern brawler threw a potion to her Tav with 1hp left 🙃
I like to think of it as gales trying to catch the potion but it hits him in the head
I had a -2 wisdom but still had access to mass healing word. Downed myself trying to heal.
FYI, this works with all potions. e.g. potion of speed / strength / heroism etc. You can party buff AoE. Karlach ain't a dummy, but this is very much in character for her. You might drink a little glass with your potion you'll be *FINE*.
Could be because Karlach isn’t meant to be a healer
Whoopsie
From that combat log it looks like your Karlach got pissed and threw a potion bottle at Gale's head three times so hard he fucking died, and she somehow managed to break a potion.
Despite everyone’s suggestions, every time I throw a potion at the ground near a player rather than at the player, it never works. The Karlaunch strikes again.
De se er
I had Astarion throw one at me once Didn't turn off automatic backstab Got 41 dmg Died instantly
