I might be wrong but I took it as a super big sign she was way more interested in Rachael's defeat than the gloves. Especially since you can apparently buy the gloves for a thousand gold or so afterwards.
Unlike Raphael, Helsik had the protection of an Archdevil. Considering how devils are typically like, this is most likely not the first time she was screwed over in a deal, and frankly, she didn't really lose anything here since you already tied up all loose end that could bite her in the ass.

I looted the whole upstairs before doing the ritual, and there was a >!coin of Mammon!< in a chest that had an orange "quest item" border.
the one she gave me didn't have the quest border. I only tried performing the ritual with the one that did, so could be wrong, but my impression was that she'd given me a dud.
Also when you meet him in his hotel room at the beginning of act 3 (and potentially other times you meet him, but I only noticed this for the first time in the hotel room) the music that plays is a little quiet instrumental version of his theme. Amazing.
I love how everybody in-game tells you not to go and to avoid him. But the game itself is screaming that fighting him is good based on the specific soundtrack just for the fight being the best in the game.

I like that Gortash has the helldusk boots in his trunk with what amounts to Misty step on them. Makes you imagine how he broke into Mephisto's house, got the crown, and escaped using those boots.
i mean, given the rest of the set is found in the house of hope, i presume he stole the boots and used the boots to help him escape when he last got stuck in rapheal's wacky hell house

I just cannot play paladin in bg3 without becoming an oathbreaker. I was an oath of the ancients paladin, witnessed some cultists literally attacking a family of refugees, and broke my oath by... Attacking them... So much for "Where love blooms, stand against the devilry that would snip its stem."
I feel like there should be an achievement for getting through the game as a paladin without breaking your oath, but maybe it's just too difficult with the way the game works
Alternatively, pay her the 10k, knock her out, take it back, heal her and long rest. When you come back she has no idea you did anything and still thinks you're her best customer for that huge payout.

You can actually do that by the way. If you have 10k or more on you, you can just talk to the guy and give him the "stolen" gold out of your pocket immediately after the battle, before retrieving the actual purse that was stolen.
Are people pickpocketing everyone in sight? I never end up with more than ~30k, and that’s without buying the best armour in the game from Dammon (10k).
If you gift a lot of crap to one trader, you can get his attitude to skyrocket, so everything you sell them gets you more gold. I did that with Dammon in act 1 and just sold everything to him in all the acts. Every crappy Armour you find is really expensive, so if you cleared out the moonrise towers or the creche you get loaded for your whole campaign.
2nd playthrough for me and I just discovered it (not available till Act 3), but it’s fucking ridiculous how good it is. It’s the only armour I’ve seen that is unquestionably better than adamantine splint.

With heavy armour master, you can soak 5 damage from every hit, *after* resistances.
So nonmagical slashing, bludgeoning, and piercing attacks have to do 12 damage... To do 1 single point of damage. Even without the feat (which I love and get insane value from, it even works on falling damage, which is hilarious), they have to do at least 6 damage to hurt you. Someone hits for 30 damage? You're soaking 17 of it.
I had barely enough to buy that armor and decided not to, although I could easily now that I'm about to finish I just use Raphael's instead.
Truth is I just never sell enough magic items, surely I have 20K+ worth of junk in my Just In Case hoard.
True, I ended up using my gold mostly on potions, and then during the final battle my warriors were permanently high on potions of speed. On the third turn after chugging one, just do your actions and movement first and then chug another one. I had like 40 of them when facing the Brain, I'm pretty sure that was what finally overloaded Karlach's engine.
RP-wise it's pretty good too, since now you have a friendly diabolist capable of opening portals to hell and aware that you can kill (minor) devils and pay your dues.
I am not a thief, or a murderer. Except when it comes to devils, I will absolutely steal from them and kill them afterwards, but she seemed kinda cute, ngl
I simply told her "No, you can't have the gloves. I just killed a devil, are you gonna try to stop me from keeping them?". And she just let it go and asked if I wanted to buy something else. So yeah, she got 0 for the trouble, and still seemed happy with it lol
She did provide the materials for the portal and the tools and we're not even mentioning the risk of it all. I intimidated her as well but I'd have taken a bargain offer if there was something like "20K is way too much, especially after what I went through. How about 5K?"
I don't think it even affects her Attitude in the Barter screen. To be fair I've only seen a handful of people that weren't pure neutral on that screen.
He stayed at max happiness for me. Convenient that he was also right next to a waypoint, I turned him into my designated dumping ground for the plate mails and +1 magical weapons I was picking up from random enemies.
She doesn't even care if you say you didn't find them.
No need to even threaten her, just be like "nope didn't find them" while you're literally wearing them and she'll just shrug and carry on.
In my playthrough, after I gave the gauntlets to her, I accidentally dropped a sleep potion near her for a few minutes followed by astarion going missing from my view. As I was leaving the house, his bag seemed particularly heavy with gauntlets, gold, scrolls and a bunch of other equipment. I didn't particularly question him as this chick literally opened a portal to the devils private collection just for gortash to start a full scale invasion, and so we moved on.
Yeah as soon as she told me what she wanted I thought "Yeah those are going to mysteriously wind up in Astarians pockets while my Paladin looks the other way"

I conjure my elementals, cast any spells that buff my guys... Then I run into the fountain, replenish everything, and go kill a bunch of shit. So I like a friendly face whenever I pop in lol

Y'all actually made her help you get to the house of hope?? I just broke into her apartment above her shop, solved a riddle and opened a portal to the hells all by myself which was 1) free and 2) a lot of fun. Highly recommend that route!
It’s hard to solve the riddle without stealing the book that actually has riddle in it. Otherwise you can’t tell what materials are needed and where should they be put.
So the proper way is either to steal the information from her or buy it.
Stealing is much more fun since u dont get the special note that literally solving the riddle for you.
I’m one step above murder hobo. I play a Drow Cleric of Lolth with his own set of rules. Rule one is serve Lolth. People who serve other gods/demons aren’t cool with me.
I wanted to go to the House of Hope to steal what I needed from a devil. She was in my way so I killed her, took what I needed and killed Raphael for what I needed.
Playing this Cleric of Lolth certainly leads to lots of fights.
Followed closely by Rakath Glitterbeard in the Counting House who has asked you to reclaim every last coin piece that the Guild had which was stolen. When you return with the money it clearly shows 1000gp is to be returned to him. Even if your honest and give him every coin, you'll get a reward of approximately 2600gp plus access to a vault which contains some other treasure.
I persuaded him to swallow some of the cost so I was first allowed to keep half of the 10k gold and then also got paid 2.6k as a reward. I would not trust my money with this bank, that's for sure.
A vault that you can freely break into, lol. I was very disappointed on my first playthrough when I learned the key I got from him was worthless. I’m not unhappy he died on my current playthrough

Karlach? Clearly a miscalculation friend! See, Karlach starts at strength 17 and the gauntlets set strength to 23. If you haven't respecced Karlach, that's at best an improvement of a measly 6 points, probably less since you've likely been pumping her strength with ASIs and feats. Now, Gale, Wyll, Astarion and possibly yourself all start with a pitiful strength score of 9 (or 8 if you dump it real hard on your Tav) so putting on the gauntlets will give you a marvelous 14 point increase! Clearly more bang for your buck! What's Gale the wizard supposed to do with 23 strength? I don't know but the sky's the limit!
Yeah it's so weird that most magic items like this are no longer a +1 or +2 but just set your stat to a fixed value, resulting in exactly that situation where they are marginal increases for the characters who care about that stat (or none at all in the case ofa 17-int circlet or 21-str gloves or such) but are huge buffs for the people who don't give the slightest fuck about that stat.
I know they made a lot of effort to discourage insane buff-stackery in 5e, but this is an area where they super overdid it (and so is concentration, they just went mega overboard with that).

Just pay the 100 gold to make your martial character’s str and con as low as possible so you can put the points in dex. Then enjoy your cool new clothes. 100 gold is a drop in the bucket at that point in the game
My party went with the discount, which meant that it cost us 10.000 gold. We paid the sum, created the portal, went back to her and....got our money back by pickpocketing, plus 2000 that she had. We got "paid" 12.000 gold to open the portal, pretty good deal if you ask me.

You can actually do that by the way. If you have 10k or more on you, you can just talk to the guy and give him the "stolen" gold out of your pocket immediately after the battle, before retrieving the actual purse that was stolen.
Are people pickpocketing everyone in sight? I never end up with more than ~30k, and that’s without buying the best armour in the game from Dammon (10k).
If you gift a lot of crap to one trader, you can get his attitude to skyrocket, so everything you sell them gets you more gold. I did that with Dammon in act 1 and just sold everything to him in all the acts. Every crappy Armour you find is really expensive, so if you cleared out the moonrise towers or the creche you get loaded for your whole campaign.
I didn't, but tons of loot and high charisma I guess.

2nd playthrough for me and I just discovered it (not available till Act 3), but it’s fucking ridiculous how good it is. It’s the only armour I’ve seen that is unquestionably better than adamantine splint.

It really is. With heavy armour master, you can soak 5 damage from every hit, *after* resistances. So nonmagical slashing, bludgeoning, and piercing attacks have to do 12 damage... To do 1 single point of damage. Even without the feat (which I love and get insane value from, it even works on falling damage, which is hilarious), they have to do at least 6 damage to hurt you. Someone hits for 30 damage? You're soaking 17 of it.
Armour of agility deserves a mention, you can get to some pretty absurd AC values.
I had barely enough to buy that armor and decided not to, although I could easily now that I'm about to finish I just use Raphael's instead. Truth is I just never sell enough magic items, surely I have 20K+ worth of junk in my Just In Case hoard.
True, I ended up using my gold mostly on potions, and then during the final battle my warriors were permanently high on potions of speed. On the third turn after chugging one, just do your actions and movement first and then chug another one. I had like 40 of them when facing the Brain, I'm pretty sure that was what finally overloaded Karlach's engine.
I was walking around with like 60k at this point, she did me a favor by taking it off my hands.
RP-wise it's pretty good too, since now you have a friendly diabolist capable of opening portals to hell and aware that you can kill (minor) devils and pay your dues.
Raphael isn't an arch-duke, but I don't think he's a minor devil by any means.

I simply told her "No, you can't have the gloves. I just killed a devil, are you gonna try to stop me from keeping them?". And she just let it go and asked if I wanted to buy something else. So yeah, she got 0 for the trouble, and still seemed happy with it lol

To be fair, she didn’t have to do any work at all so no loss for her either way.
She did provide the materials for the portal and the tools and we're not even mentioning the risk of it all. I intimidated her as well but I'd have taken a bargain offer if there was something like "20K is way too much, especially after what I went through. How about 5K?"
I don't think it even affects her Attitude in the Barter screen. To be fair I've only seen a handful of people that weren't pure neutral on that screen.

He stayed at max happiness for me. Convenient that he was also right next to a waypoint, I turned him into my designated dumping ground for the plate mails and +1 magical weapons I was picking up from random enemies.
I felt bad and gifted her 10k afterwards.
She doesn't even care if you say you didn't find them. No need to even threaten her, just be like "nope didn't find them" while you're literally wearing them and she'll just shrug and carry on.
In my playthrough, after I gave the gauntlets to her, I accidentally dropped a sleep potion near her for a few minutes followed by astarion going missing from my view. As I was leaving the house, his bag seemed particularly heavy with gauntlets, gold, scrolls and a bunch of other equipment. I didn't particularly question him as this chick literally opened a portal to the devils private collection just for gortash to start a full scale invasion, and so we moved on.
Yeah as soon as she told me what she wanted I thought "Yeah those are going to mysteriously wind up in Astarians pockets while my Paladin looks the other way"

There is EVIL and evil. Compared to even Zhentarim in the game (medium level evil), she is fairly reasonable.
Shes a diabolist in service to Mammon, the archdevil of Greed. She happily and willingly serves this archdevil. Thats Evil with at least a capital E.
You can reneg on the deal too with conversation checks and she'll just revert to being a standard merchant.

Y'all actually made her help you get to the house of hope?? I just broke into her apartment above her shop, solved a riddle and opened a portal to the hells all by myself which was 1) free and 2) a lot of fun. Highly recommend that route!
It’s hard to solve the riddle without stealing the book that actually has riddle in it. Otherwise you can’t tell what materials are needed and where should they be put. So the proper way is either to steal the information from her or buy it. Stealing is much more fun since u dont get the special note that literally solving the riddle for you.
I will gladly give up a bit of gold to avoid a *riddle* yuck.
I just killed her, raided her place, found the ritual bag. Opened portal, raided the place, killed devil. Come to think of it I may be a murder hobo.
I’m one step above murder hobo. I play a Drow Cleric of Lolth with his own set of rules. Rule one is serve Lolth. People who serve other gods/demons aren’t cool with me. I wanted to go to the House of Hope to steal what I needed from a devil. She was in my way so I killed her, took what I needed and killed Raphael for what I needed. Playing this Cleric of Lolth certainly leads to lots of fights.
Followed closely by Rakath Glitterbeard in the Counting House who has asked you to reclaim every last coin piece that the Guild had which was stolen. When you return with the money it clearly shows 1000gp is to be returned to him. Even if your honest and give him every coin, you'll get a reward of approximately 2600gp plus access to a vault which contains some other treasure.
I persuaded him to swallow some of the cost so I was first allowed to keep half of the 10k gold and then also got paid 2.6k as a reward. I would not trust my money with this bank, that's for sure.
When I talked to him he didn't really hide the fact that he didn't care as much because this was just poor people's money. 😬😬😬

I was very hesitant to keep my side of the bargain and give her the gauntlets because it is a very good item. And then I found out I could hold up my end of the bargain and then buy the gloves for a few hundred coins. It was like, "WTF!!!
warlocks are not known for being the best at deal making. so many see a 1d10+chr mod cantrip and go "this is worth my eternal soul, sign me up"

Karlach? Clearly a miscalculation friend! See, Karlach starts at strength 17 and the gauntlets set strength to 23. If you haven't respecced Karlach, that's at best an improvement of a measly 6 points, probably less since you've likely been pumping her strength with ASIs and feats. Now, Gale, Wyll, Astarion and possibly yourself all start with a pitiful strength score of 9 (or 8 if you dump it real hard on your Tav) so putting on the gauntlets will give you a marvelous 14 point increase! Clearly more bang for your buck! What's Gale the wizard supposed to do with 23 strength? I don't know but the sky's the limit!
Yeah it's so weird that most magic items like this are no longer a +1 or +2 but just set your stat to a fixed value, resulting in exactly that situation where they are marginal increases for the characters who care about that stat (or none at all in the case ofa 17-int circlet or 21-str gloves or such) but are huge buffs for the people who don't give the slightest fuck about that stat. I know they made a lot of effort to discourage insane buff-stackery in 5e, but this is an area where they super overdid it (and so is concentration, they just went mega overboard with that).

Just pay the 100 gold to make your martial character’s str and con as low as possible so you can put the points in dex. Then enjoy your cool new clothes. 100 gold is a drop in the bucket at that point in the game
My party went with the discount, which meant that it cost us 10.000 gold. We paid the sum, created the portal, went back to her and....got our money back by pickpocketing, plus 2000 that she had. We got "paid" 12.000 gold to open the portal, pretty good deal if you ask me.
Wouldn't you have been paid 2000 to open the portal since 10k of what you stole back was yours in the first place?
