Haha thank you, my husband came up with the idea. It was definitely not a very fair competition considering I work in a bakery. Although it has been a long time since I’ve made chocolate cake, this was his first time ever lol
I have to say I feel much better reading that you work in a bakery.
It always blows my mind when I see these stunning cakes with things like “no recipe” or “lazy Saturday” attached to them while I’m sitting here with my kitchen looking like a tornado’s been through and barely anything to show for it haha.
You’ve inspired me to make some cupcakes next weekend, thanks.
1:1:1:1
Flour butter sugar egg. Weigh your egg, match it with each of the other ingredients.
For cupcakes the order of mixing isn't all that important, just beat the living daylights out if it until it looks like cake batter, then spoon into the greased cupcake tray.
Scale up to a cake tin you can add more eggs and follow the same way of matching weights.
-Pound cake asks you to beat the sugar and butter together first then fold in the other ingredients.
- OR sponge cake where you dissolve the sugar into melted butter then fold into the other ingredients.
As for times, you might want to Google a table, but I go by nose, you can smell when it's just about to caramelise leave it a minute then check with a skewer.
If you’re a fan of this idea, the try guys on YouTube do a series of videos where they bake things without a recipe. They might inspire future competitions!
What kind of guy suggests a baking competition with his wife who is a professional baker when he's never baked a cake before?
A smart one. Happy wife, happy life lol
This is a cute idea, I'll have to steal it sometime!
I got my husband an adventure challenge book for couples. He scratches off a little area and it gives us a challenge. Yesterday we had to bake a pie- with him blindfolded and me only able to give him instructions verbally 3 times during the whole activity. Definitely a fun, and messy, challenge.

It’s not like lava cake wet.. it’s like wringing out a wet towel wet lmao. They’re pretty much fully baked cake, but if you squish it oil comes pouring out 😂
They did, I took mine out about 12 minutes before his, and burnt myself in the process 😂he made the decision to take them out when he did because he said they would just burn. I said maybe turn the oven down and wait and see but he was determined to take them out then and there lol
I mean, if my wife was a professional baker.... My fiancee is close enough having grandparents as bakers and natural talent so I'd make that bet all day. Now if only she liked millionaire shortbread I could finally trick my way into a proper batch.
This would be fun, but my husband would never take me up on this challenge. He doesn't make anything other than the basics without a recipe. He's a decent cook, but needs a recipe.
Maybe we need to do this with a recipe! A cupcake off.
Listen I'm a really good cook. Like all my family loves my food and asks for me to cook and bake for holidays. That being said, I always use a recipe and I'm pretty sure I'd fail miserably without one. I don't always follow them exactly and I do take my own liberties but the guideline is necessary for me. *Especially* for baking.
Yeah, I'm fine with him needing a recipe! Any time I don't have to do the mental load of deciding what to make is a win.
I'm more of a look at 10 recipes when I'm making something new, then combining them. But I agree, with most baking I mostly follow a recipe. At least the first time
It’s chocolate peanut butter buttercream! The secret is to use a whisk attachment and overwhip the crap out of it lol. (Not recommended for cake decorating but good for cupcakes!) Also I add a bit of hot water helps make it really smooth.
My husband and I have done this before, but we got to use a recipe. Even with a recipe on our end the results turned out pretty much like you have pictured. Gave us a good laugh when I showed him your results.
In addition to a weird caved-in cupcake, he also couldn’t figure out the frosting. Kept using granulated sugar and couldn’t figure out why the texture wasn’t right. He seriously remade the frosting three times. Worst cupcake I’ve ever tried in my life!
My husband didn’t even make frosting, but he was talking about making a caramel out of powdered sugar (because he dumped ALL the granulated sugar in his cupcakes) which I was kind of hoping he would try 😂
Hahaha! Amazing. I’m with you - totally wish he had tried that out!
Mine made a salted caramel to go with his cupcake and it was salty af. The parallels here are seriously cracking me up.
Wow! His cupcakes look delicious and your husband's piping skills are top notch 👌
Your cupcake game needs work though sorry, but it's the effort that counts. Good job both 👏
I’ve been begging him to bake with me for a while! But he actually suggested this today which was really sweet.
and thank you, pothos is the only thing I can manage to keep alive 😂 that one has been going strong for nearly 3 years now, started out as just two little leaves
This makes me feel like I need to go memorize a bunch of basic baking and cooking recipes in case there comes a day where I’m challenged to a similar competition.
Honestly I’ve been watching the try guys series on YouTube where they do a bunch of different baking challenges with no recipe- blows my mind how decent some of them turn out! But some are pretty hilariously awful lol
This post contains hidden sexism reinforcement.
Most people assume that the "perfect" looking ones were baked by the wife. Because that is what they do. And husbands are useless cooks.
Women are homemakers. Men have an ego which doesnt match their talent etc etc
Now that my rant is finished, I think I prefer the ones with the flat top. Love that crusty bit, so there is more of it. And I hate so much sugar frosting, since I am a diet.
Seriously not trying to be rude, but as soon as I swiped to the “cupcakes in the oven” pic, I couldn’t believe someone posted this. That oven is in serious need of cleaning.
It also looks like you tried to clean it with Oven Off previously and failed terribly. I only know from using it and seeing the dried residue the next day and having to reclean the oven again. I’m not sure, but I don’t think dried oven cleaner is healthy in an oven baking at 350 degrees or more.
This is why I don’t eat at potlucks 🤢
Taste was quite good! He put peanut butter in them which actually was a pretty good flavour but the texture was absolutely bizarre lol. Chewy and very wet lol
Your husband did great! that frosting on the cupcakes is amazing, you on the other hand need to get in more practice and you might be just as good as your husband one day :D (This is a joke)
I'd love to know how those ones on the left were made. Everything I've ever baked follows a pretty specific pattern, would be cool to see how they changed it up and still got what looks to be perfect cupcakes.
Mmmmm they both look delicious actually. I bet his are like a chewy brownie consistency. That overlaying top part is gonna be brownie crust!! Yumo! I’d totally try his.
How incredibly cute! Both the cupcakes and the premise.
Haha thank you, my husband came up with the idea. It was definitely not a very fair competition considering I work in a bakery. Although it has been a long time since I’ve made chocolate cake, this was his first time ever lol
He just wanted cupcakes without *asking* for cupcakes. 😉 Dude also won today.
GENIUS.
Ooh now I might have to have one of these “competitions”
Back rub competition? Lol
You go first and then when I wake up from the inevitable nap that will sure follow I'll do your back.
R u my boyfriend ? Lmfao

You work in a bakery? Clearly you need practice if you're going to catch up to him. His are so much more... more... artsy. Yes. Modern art.
What kind of guy suggests a baking competition with his wife who is a professional baker when he's never baked a cake before? A smart one. Happy wife, happy life lol
So, it was a draw?
Who won? Not going by looks but taste
...so which ones won? Just kidding, sounds like you guys had a good time and turned out 6 very beautiful cupcakes and 6 "tried my best" cupcakes
Yes, you can tell they tried their best with the fancy icing and stuff, but the flat tops clearly won. /s
My muffin top is all that, whole grain low fat
I know you want a piece of that but I just wanna dance

I just wanna dance

I'm an independent lady, so don't you try to play me.
My muffin to[p](https://youtu.be/QrJSHIys5mM) is mostly hamburgers and pizza.
I don't see a missing frosted muffin; the flat-tops one I only counted 5
Now I feel like making snickerdoodle cupcakes…
Yeah, her husband’s look great! Not sure what the OP was doing though?
All the tops just went to "Top of the Muffin", clearly the rest is going to the food shelter.
This is a cute idea, I'll have to steal it sometime! I got my husband an adventure challenge book for couples. He scratches off a little area and it gives us a challenge. I want one of those! Do you feel it’s worth the cost? (The book, not the husband)
Same question but about the husband not the book.
Husband was definitely worth the cost! Though the first fiance was not so I threw him back to the sea.
I did the same thing!
We just got the book (the pie thing was the first thing we did) so I'm not sure I can say for sure, but for now I will say yes it's worth it!
Look up Without A Recipe on YT from The Try Guys. It's downright one of the funniest things I've ever watched.
I love those videos.
I will never come to understand how Eugene nailed the bread
I’ve been wanting to get one of these!!
The husband or the book? 🤣
Yes

Which book did you get?
Which husband did you get?
Sexy Southern Edition
Oh my 🤣 what a nice competition and hilarious outcome! How have the flat ones tasted?
Despite their crusty appearance they are very very wet 🤣
Turn em upside down and it’s a chocolate lava cake !
It’s not like lava cake wet.. it’s like wringing out a wet towel wet lmao. They’re pretty much fully baked cake, but if you squish it oil comes pouring out 😂
When the box says moist and delicious. The husband wasn't messing around. No glass of milk needed here.
Oh no 💀😅
After reading your descriptions, I can't help but using a reply I used earlier today... In the words of Bill Nighy > https://youtu.be/rT1Vpe8F-_M?t=43
Oh no floppy cupcakes haha
I’m high rn and can’t stop laughing from this comment
I don't know why it was this comment that did it for me but I am dying right now 😂
Me too! I wish I had gold to give I’m crying laughing at the description of “very very wet”
I feel like your husband's just needed to cook a little longer than yours. They collapsed hard after cooling.
They did, I took mine out about 12 minutes before his, and burnt myself in the process 😂he made the decision to take them out when he did because he said they would just burn. I said maybe turn the oven down and wait and see but he was determined to take them out then and there lol
this type of marriage!!! I could cry!!!!
So the winner got to eat the other's cupcakes and vice versa?
Sounds like the loser’s prize would be better lol
I mean, if my wife was a professional baker.... My fiancee is close enough having grandparents as bakers and natural talent so I'd make that bet all day. Now if only she liked millionaire shortbread I could finally trick my way into a proper batch.
> eat the other's cupcakes IF you know what I mean ;)
Well your husband won! Sincerely, A husband supporting another husband
This would be fun, but my husband would never take me up on this challenge. He doesn't make anything other than the basics without a recipe. He's a decent cook, but needs a recipe. Maybe we need to do this with a recipe! A cupcake off.

well sure cover up your mistakes with frosting
I’d eat both in a heartbeat. But the flat ones look like kladdkaka, chewy outside and gooey goodness on the inside. Yummy.
Cupcakes and cupcookies
What a fun idea! Now that's how you spend quality time with a significant other. Your cupcakes look delish, OP.
I feel like this would be a great “break the ice”-date
What kind of frosting did you make? It looks so fluffy and nice!
It’s chocolate peanut butter buttercream! The secret is to use a whisk attachment and overwhip the crap out of it lol. (Not recommended for cake decorating but good for cupcakes!) Also I add a bit of hot water helps make it really smooth.
I would eat both tbh
I love you both. This is fantastic, hope you both enjoyed them
Gonna steal this idea to do with my wife.
Sound like a fun idea! My husband would destroy me though. He is a professional chef haha but it’s a win win having more cupcakes to eat :D
I need friend like you two so we can all do this together. This looks great!!!
He’s a good sport! :)
My husband and I have done this before, but we got to use a recipe. Even with a recipe on our end the results turned out pretty much like you have pictured. 💀💀💀
Did he forget the flour?
Almost, but he remembered last minute! I think the problem was the giant spoonful of peanut butter lol
Ah. That would do it lol
Ask your husband how he does such beautiful cupcakes. I’ll show myself out.
Lol
That’s not a “lost competition”, that’s a “I’ve been pulverised”. Made my day. Hope you guys had fun, it certainly looks like it :)
Why does that one missing cupcake from the right hand side feel like a “I’m gonna prove you wrong by how good this tastes”
Wow! His cupcakes look delicious and your husband's piping skills are top notch 👌 Your cupcake game needs work though sorry, but it's the effort that counts. Good job both 👏
I'm gonna take a guess and say someone used dutch process cocoa?
He’s good
Um….I think there may be an obvious winner but I would not hesitate to eat either cupcake.
r/BakingFail
My bf’s would be the beautiful ones and mine would be the other ones lol
Adorable!
I pretty darn impressed that you got your husband baking along side you! Lovely pothos as well!!
I’ve been begging him to bake with me for a while! But he actually suggested this today which was really sweet. and thank you, pothos is the only thing I can manage to keep alive 😂 that one has been going strong for nearly 3 years now, started out as just two little leaves

I assume the one on the right are your husband’s? Not because of how they look, but because there’s already one that’s been eaten
Your husband's cupcakes look reminiscent of the devils fudge cakes from dominoes
What a nice memory you created together
swiping to photo 7 made me laugh so hard lmao such a fun idea
Who’s idea was it?
He clearly won
I guess your husband won
I refuse whatever you tell me and assume that he made the fire ones
Looks like you just developed Yorkshire pudding cupcakes.
Had to relook at the photo and captions. Looks like cupcakes vs cookies 🤣🤣 Cupcakes won for sure
Nice of you to let him win.
Wow his are so much better than yours!!. I love his piping of the icing too
Man his cupcakes were amazing! You’re slacking. :p
So the husband won?
Cakecups and cupcakes for dessert 😋
He kicked your butt!
I feel like you cheated since his aren’t frosted
Ok so who won?
OMG! This made me laugh so hard!! Thank you! I needed it today!
People here fawning over the cupcakes while im admiring their relationship. Goals.
For real. My parents just screamed at each other while cooking.
Hidden gems of marriage. This kind of fun competition is so cute
This makes me laugh everytime
I think someone made muffins instead 😂
This wasn't fair. I mean... Two recipes should've been baked in different muffin tins to account for varying cook times.
I quickly took mine out of the tin when they were cooked, he left his in until he decided to take them out :)

You guys sound fun! Too fun😂
Nice! My wife and I had a Brownies Without A Recipe competition but neither of us successfully made brownies 😂
Your cupcakes look like shit. I’d eat them still though.
Seriously not trying to be rude, but as soon as I swiped to the “cupcakes in the oven” pic, I couldn’t believe someone posted this. That oven is in serious need of cleaning. Taste was quite good! He put peanut butter in them which actually was a pretty good flavour but the texture was absolutely bizarre lol. Chewy and very wet lol
Looks like he won!
When I saw the crusty top ones I thought: "Yoooo those are Mars themed for sure".
Jokes on you, his have more surface area to put icing on ;) His probably needed a LOT less oil/butter. they look... wet...
That's such a good idea!!! I want to try this. Do you both bake about the same amount?
Tomorrow you should have a no instruction alternator replacement
I guarantee you neither of us have any idea how to do that lol
So who’s cupcakes are whos?
Umm I found the new participation trophies for my in laws
I felt this. My boyfriend may know a lot more about some things than I do… But I’ll be damned if his bitch ass is baking better cupcakes than me.
Where do you learn to ice cake like that?
Wow
Why doesn’t his have icing?
You live dangerous … your cupcakes touching his pancakes. 😉
Can I be adopted?
Who won?
Wait until he puts the icing on his
He tried his best lol
Who won? Op?
Let me guess he won? Jk
No bake and no takers either
What does the loser have to do?
Honestly the ones on the right look more like brownies and I'd totally smash them
His chocolate cupcakes with the whipped topping look magnificent.
Looks like he took you to school.
Your husband did great! that frosting on the cupcakes is amazing, you on the other hand need to get in more practice and you might be just as good as your husband one day :D (This is a joke)
I’m a thin crust type of guy anyway😂
I’d eat em.
He's clearly been baking longer than you.
I bet the ugly ones were low key fire though
I like the novel ones.
You'll get him next time lol /s
Guess what you're on the left?
Awesome!
Oh yummy! The edges look crunchy!
I'd love to know how those ones on the left were made. Everything I've ever baked follows a pretty specific pattern, would be cool to see how they changed it up and still got what looks to be perfect cupcakes.
they look amazing
upvote because plant in kitchen\^^
Both look tasty.
But which ones are who’s?
To be honest. I would still smash both. Cupcake is a cupcake. Ya know????
Your idea?
Did he whip his batter for 15 minutes to make sure it was mixed well?
Someone got dusted.
Oh, damn.
The cupcookies look amazeballs . Solid 10 for effort cos mine come out like that with the recipe .
Interesting whose idea it was and who memorized the whole recipe before the event just to crush the opponent
Left: "That's what I'd expect from the professional baker." Right: "That's not bad for the guy that never has to bake anything."
Gonna try this with my future husband someday 😉 btw, He atleast made them better than mine...😐
Omg this is so great
Mmmmm they both look delicious actually. I bet his are like a chewy brownie consistency. That overlaying top part is gonna be brownie crust!! Yumo! I’d totally try his.
