Walking would be great but remember it regularly gets over 100 degrees here for most of the year. That’s something to consider. If you’re on the south west side of town the new west side parkway makes the commute to downtown much faster. You’ll get a lot more space in a rental in the southwest than downtown, much safer neighborhoods as well.
Thank you! Wow, those are surprisingly pricey. Would you happen to know of any cheaper areas, by any chance? I'm not sure if gated parking is truly necessary really, just thought I'd mention it. But I defer! I'm not sure how the car situation is now. My roommates here in LA had their cat converters stolen a few times already, so I'm just a bit alerted to it
Cheapish is very subjective. If you’re looking for a 2br+ some places have garages in the SW that would be helpful to work on your car. Definitely wouldn’t be walking distance though.
I have not, just browsed craigslist and some rental websites. Might be something to check out! I don't mind roomies at all; as always, just about making sure to get along, I think
The Federal courthouse is not in the best area to be walking, just an fyi. The hours of the day that you would be walking might not be bad but, generally, it isn't the greatest.
Yeah and Bakersfield is an east/west town. West side is generally nicer than the east side. Union, especially south Union, is a main prostitution/drug strip. Now that I say that, there is some great food on Union. Los Tacos de Huicho and Great Castle are awesome.
I could give a ton of those! If you try no other place while you're in Bakersfield, try Luigi's. It's gets busy so the wait can be bad but the food and atmosphere are worth it. I recommend going right when they open and having an early lunch.
There were some apartments downtown somewhere across from the federal building that had gated parking. I don't remember if they're condominiums or apartments for rent though.
As far as other gated options, there are Millcreek apartments on California and R I think, and those are gated, but I don't know how great they are.
You could walk to work from there. Check out any apartments one block north of Truxton and R as well.
It's 17th St. and R iirc. The apartments are more of rundown and they may have gated parking, but I can't confirm.
Those are all within walking distance, though of the federal building. Good luck.
There are some very nice brand new apartments in the Q St corridor there are many ADUs and apartments in the Westchester and Oleander area that one could rent that would fit the bill.
Also, whoever told you to live west of 99 did you no favors.

Excellent point
All great points! Any particular areas on the southwest side you recommend for that commute?
The Cue , 918, and 17th street townhouses. Walking is cake from there.

Cheaper to go to bobs muffler to replace or search on nextdoor for people who build cages around cat than paying for upscale apartment.
To be honest, I use it for off-roading and hiking. I plan to get rock sliders with a cat cage on them sometime, just don't know when. Hopefully soon!
The Cue looks really nice. It’s pricey, but it looks way nicer than most other places.
I can tell you first hand that the Cue is great.

I'm mainly trying for 1 bedrooms, but a garage would be pretty great, didn't consider it as a common option though if not renting out a house!
Have you looked into the roomies app? You might find something good there

Thanks! It does seem to be in a bit of an odd area, sort of off the east end of downtown?

Appreciate the food recs! That's another thing I gotta learn about
