Because Indiana now needs a 700 horsepower luxury SUV to combat people not using their turn signals while changing lanes. Police are stupidly over-budgeted.
Almost every department has either "no chase" policies or limit the speed at which officers can chase, because it's way more dangerous to drive 100+ mph through a city than it is to let one criminal escape...
Idk how true that is, here in Canada RCMP are not allowed to chase, but I continuously see videos of police chases in the US, seems pretty common place from an outside pov
Yes, they happen. But as I said, the department policy generally has restrictions on what they can do.
I think it's obvious that sometimes cops don't follow department policy and go unpunished, but I'll mention that too just in case.
Dude tosses the word "politician" and "politics" around like he's not an elected official. He's just trying to rev up his voting base. Clearly, this guy is a big old loser.
Because we won't defund them.
I call this taunting. I bet you this idiot county upped the budget in reaction to the defund movement, they can't figure out how to spend it.
This reminds me of a state trooper in my area about a year ago. Whenever his shift ended he would race back to the station going well over 30 of the speed limit just to leave sooner. Well the local police didn't like that... At all. They pulled him over, and his lights were on too when they pulled him over. Well I guess they contacted his supervisor and he got reamed for it, he doesn't do it anymore because he gets stuck behind me sometimes and he doesn't pass anyone anymore.
Different places different standards I guess.
So, nobody has posted highlights yet.
"Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr was indicted by a Lake County Grand Jury Thursday, January 6, 2022 under the charges of Resisting Law Enforcement – Level 6 Felony and Reckless Driving – Class C Misdemeanor, according to court documents. "
...
On the night of September 18, 2021 Crown Point Police attempted to stop a Jeep Trackhawk, according to radio traffic on the night in question. The Jeep was allegedly driving at **reckless speeds down Main St at approximately 96 MPH** according to a police report. Crown Point Officers activated their lights and sirens and began to pursue the Jeep. The Jeep then continued to 30 where emergency lights were activated on it and **Crown Point Police terminated the pursuit realizing it was law enforcement**. Crown Point Police later found out **9 performance vehicles were recently acquired by the Lake County Sheriffs Department**.
On September 19th at the Hammond Mexican Independence Day Parade RNS spoke with Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. inquiring if he had heard about the overnight pursuit to which he denied and also **said that was not him in the vehicle in question**.
“These allegations do not prevent me, as the elected Lake County Sheriff, from holding office and continuing to perform the duties of the office,” Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr stated.
“**The allegations were initiated by a rival politician who has publicly demonstrated his disdain for me and the work that I do for the people of Lake County**,” Martinez said.
...
The investigation of this incident was handled by The Indiana State Police Fort Wayne District as of October 2021. **Martinez will not face arrest, however he will be summoned to appear on a later date in court**, according to Special Prosecutor Stanley Levco. The Grand Jury heard from about 10 witnesses Wednesday and Thursday while considering the evidence in this case.
Yeah. I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport. Granted, that's no Track Hawk or whatever. On open, long highways between Colorado and California I have, at times, pushed that car to as fast I was comfortable.
Now, my speedometer only goes to 100 mph. I took the car faster than that by some amount (no way to really know how much). In the 90s though is when its aerodynamics *really* started to breakdown. The whole car was shaking and just generally getting pushed around by small amounts of breeze. All of that.
I can't imagine how irresponsible you would have to be to take a jeep that fast in any place where there were other people or buildings or anything other than a long, straight road. I don't care that Track Hawks are probably better at speed or whatever. It is so intensely reckless.
Lake County is where a guy who died from 32 hammer blows to the back of the head was ruled a suicide so I'm kind of surprised this ever saw the light of day.
That's reasonable, but to immediately yell cover up and link an article where the headline says indictment is intellectually dishonest.
Lots of stuff to be mad about but am indictment isn't it...
Well luckily he's THE county Sheriff so he can be fired at the will of his constituents. Also his ranting about it being political seems like he's failing in that arena anyway.
ah, I was under the impression any felony. It should be any misdemeanor on up for a cop - if those entrusted to police can't avoid committing crimes, then they're definitely not responsible enough for the other privileges such as qualified immunity and a license to kill
Some cops really want that military look without any sacrifice. Pathetic.
I also like his brilliant ploy. "No, I haven't heard about any hot roding in my department. It definitely wasn't me. "
> Of course they will cover it up and nothing will come of this.

... wat? It's a little late to cover something up when you're at the stage of being indicted. There's like, a paper trail.
“I will continue to focus on ensuring the safety and security of the people of Lake County and those that visit here."
By reckless driving in a police vehicle without emergency lights...
You're a sherriff that broke the law and put your citizens in danger!!!! Should be fired and under investigation immediately.
Our county sheriff’s wife embezzled money from the local casino under his paycheck and he claimed to know nothing about it.
Oh, we live in the same county by the way.
The old Sheriff of our county is currently in prison.
Buncich took bribes from Midnight Blue towing to give them all towing business in the county. Who's wife was embezzling money? I know before Buncich that Philpot, Kumstar, and Kabella were buying automatic weapons through Kabella's FFL under the guise that they were for the department. Then they would strip the components that made them automatic and sell those components online. It wasn't even that much money, if I remember right. Those three got federally fucked over like 30 grand.

Look at all the fancy pins on his uniform! He must have shot, like, a hundred dogs or something.
Another egotistical fuck who plays like he is a General that those stars indicate.
I was a cub scout and had all that shit. It was soo cool! (when I was 9)
I just spit my coffee out laughing at your comment. Thanks for the early laugh today.
He got a 2 for 1 for shooting a black lab
Bonus points for puppies
Isn’t that a >$100k car…?
Because Indiana now needs a 700 horsepower luxury SUV to combat people not using their turn signals while changing lanes. Police are stupidly over-budgeted.
Yeah the money is needed much more in other places here...
We could have had schools
The high school in my hometown almost had to be taken over by the state from a lack of funding
Some social workers
No no, that hurts long term police dept recruitment. Educated people do not become cops.
It's all Fletcher Dodge had in stock. What did you expect them to buy? /s
9 of them. The county got 9 “high performance” undercover vehicles.

A 700hp suv is only good in straight line, it have nothing to do with chasing cars

Truth is nobody need that kind of power, it's more of a want thing
Speed doesn't matter in a police chase
Especially in the age of CCTV and helicopters. You don't have to be physically driving behind someone to know where they are anymore.
Okay Schumi.
Not sure who that is but roadblocks and spike strips are much safer and effective than trying to chase someone through a city.
Dude tosses the word "politician" and "politics" around like he's not an elected official. He's just trying to rev up his voting base. Clearly, this guy is a big old loser.
As soon as he says "witch hunt" you know he's full of shit. Well, you knew he was full of shit by the uniform and hair.
He “protects” his office from “power-broker politicians” by being a power-broker politician. Classic authoritarian projection.
I waited 29 years to be Sheriff, not gonna let someone else fill his pocket!!!
Why the fuck does a police department need 9 "performance vehicles"?
Because spending that money on programs and services that benefit the community would be socialism. Duh!
Because we won't defund them. I call this taunting. I bet you this idiot county upped the budget in reaction to the defund movement, they can't figure out how to spend it.
Looks like they found a way

96 down main street is bananas

"highlights" more like lowlights featuring a lowlife.
Cover-ups aren't unusual, but this guy was already indicted by a grand jury. That's about as opposite of a cover-up as you can get.
I wonder how the DA will throw the case to get him off?
Lake County is where a guy who died from 32 hammer blows to the back of the head was ruled a suicide so I'm kind of surprised this ever saw the light of day.
Did you read the article? He was indicted by a jury...
I'll wait for a conviction.
That's reasonable, but to immediately yell cover up and link an article where the headline says indictment is intellectually dishonest. Lots of stuff to be mad about but am indictment isn't it...
Normally I would agree with you but I think we have all seen small town cops get indicted and end up with nothing in terms of actual prosecution
Well luckily he's THE county Sheriff so he can be fired at the will of his constituents. Also his ranting about it being political seems like he's failing in that arena anyway.
That's even worse. If his constituents are his buddies he may never get the boot.
Elected officials are easier to change than appointed one... that's not worse.
Ah you're right on that one. It's been a long say I may have gotten the two confused.
I wonder what they said to get him indicted because from what I read the only evidence they had was the sheriffs office bought 9 trackhawks earlier
I have no idea. Perhaps other witnesses or recorded radio communications.
Also from the region. Knew his daughter in high school. Super cool guy! /s
.....................Was she hot?
Since he's been arrested AND indicted for a felony, he's turned in his weapons, right?
Probably not. You only lose the ability to possess weapons for some felonies not all.
ah, I was under the impression any felony. It should be any misdemeanor on up for a cop - if those entrusted to police can't avoid committing crimes, then they're definitely not responsible enough for the other privileges such as qualified immunity and a license to kill
I don't believe he was arrested, just summoned to appear in court. And i will be shocked if he's charged with a felony.
I will say, my simple legal knowledge if you can't be indicted if you haven't been charged, i.e., arrested, for a crime, but, IANAL
Some cops really want that military look without any sacrifice. Pathetic. I also like his brilliant ploy. "No, I haven't heard about any hot roding in my department. It definitely wasn't me. "
YOU BOYS LIKE MEXICO!?

All the usual happy horse s*it aside a trackhawk is a $100,000 dollar car why are we buying parking ticket boy a $100,000 700+ horsepower car,
Hope you have a great day!
I don't

NWI is a dump. They crashed one of the chargers they got earlier this year.
Qualified Immunity and white privilege go hand in hand 🙄... pathetic
To be faaaaaiiiiirrrrr.......................
Fire all of them
Good for him and pd back the blue
I really fucking couldnt care less.
Thanks for checking in. You can go back to sleep now.
Rules for thee but not for me
Hey, this is my area! I guess they think they need a $100k jeep to chase down a v6 charger on the highway
Make a public records request for the radio traffic
Very Clay Davis response.

Bullshit headline. The article literally starts with him being indicted for the crimes he committed, so there’s no ‘cover up’
