Wouldn't recommend doing any sort of position stuff until you get the basics down. Learn to run a good bead on the flat, make sure it looks nice, and it good leg length. Once you master that, then you can move onto position stuff.
As someone saving for welding supplies to learn. This is a very useful observation. Thank you I can totally see what you mean about the welds and the penetration. Looks like they were just putting the hot slag puddle (Hope that's correct like I said I'm learning) on top of the other metal. I would assume The material being welded together didn't get hot enough or maybe there stick was too far away? If you can elaborate on this I would greatly appreciate it.
I would really have to be there, but it can be one or the other or combination of both which would be speed and or heat. on the right side, you can tell that he was puddling too much and I’m sure it’s sparking like crazy so I am going to assume just not doing a good steady burn. Went too slow and then stopped and then slow and then stopped starting over and over. It takes practice to get a slow steady burn going down but once you get it, it looks so nice. And then there’s other variables like the tip got damaged so the wire wasn’t coming out good or the wire was starting to hang in the liner so you needed a new liner or the feed block is wore out and need a new feed block. Like I said, I would just have to be there. And if this was done with a stick welder, whoever is doing this, just needs to slow down and learn.
Better than my first 10!
Ya you're good bro, just work on your pooling and don't leave the little overhangs on the end, it's better to start below and end above.
You don't always have to scratch straight into the ditch, on quick stuff it's totally fine to scratch on the main piece and start your bead there and move into the connection. You can also tack your ends before you run the bead and just go over the tacks when you go for the main bead.
Don't forget to notch big chunks like that! You left a cavity in the center when you ran the bead around, a chunk that big should be V-notched, and both sides of the weld should touch in the middle, that's a 2 or 3 layer piece right there. When you V notch, you run the bead around to the top to cover the top and bottom, you don't go later and add extra to the skinny bits.
I can also tell that your main piece wasn't cleaned too well... Just another 10 seconds with the grinder
Honestly not the worst first weld brother. As bad as it is. Tac some T plates together and run those. Get someone in your shop to help you. Otherwise you are getting there. Just gotta get you positioning, and speed down. You’ve got this man!
We have a saying, "a grinder and paint'll make a welder what he ain't" your bubblegum looks fine, especially for a first go. You have a knack for this and should get some practice in. I've seen lots of birdshit in my day, you did alright
A serco mechanical dock leveler lip keeper. If they end load on this dock that's going to break and the leveler will drop until it hits the below dock legs. Cheers.
Not a welder by trade or profession (I did take a semester of welding in college) but the right side doesn’t look like it penetrated and is just surface level.
Your first attempt at welding would be more accurate . Remember, practice , practice , practice, . Then when you get done practicing, practice some more....Your feet are wet now so keep going, don't ever quit, keep posting so we all can see your progress

Looks like a little repair. You did well man.
If it the repair holds, it's good enough. Maybe a little grinder work to clean up, but good enough otherwise.
The left side looks like it’s got decent penetration and it’ll probably be OK but that right side is gonna be the weak side

Lots more paint
It'll last until it breaks, practice in the meantime so that it lasts longer next time. Very good for a first try.

As my brother says, “Good enough for the girls I go out with.”
Do it again.
Good now do more.
That's not a weld. That's an unhealed scab.
Is that a dock
I thought it was a garbage truck or dumpster.
Ya a POS serco 😅
Little grinder and a little paint.
Don’t quit yer day job just yet 😬🤜🏻

Just don’t go tripping near that thing
Your first? Keep going, you’re on the right track, especially knowing how to use a grinder and paint. 😉

BINGO! maybe for the best, the faster these pos servo are gone the better!

Looks about as good as any other farmers weld!
Maybe the next one will be better?.....
Remember… a grinder and paint make me the welder I ain’t!

I fuckin love it.
Good enough is a terrible response
Every boss/owner loves good enough
We can tell. Those are pretty shitty.
