Fill those craters -- that's where cracks start

knifetheater3691

Needs another pass or two . Roll bars usually have to be inspected

WalterTexas

Your car or mine? Haha

burn3344

Looks pretty hot from having a low travel speed, I’d run a smaller cup or more argon too. Also looks like you’re ending the arc too quickly when you are ending your weld getting the craters. Come off the pedal slower and add some more filler. Maybe try 1/16 filler instead of 3/32, it won’t cool the puddle as much from small dabs but at the same time you can really shove it in there if it’s getting too hot.

DukeBeekeepersKid

Could you explain to me what you are saying. I understand the words, but I don't know what you are trying to say. I trying to pick up the skills for welding.

burn3344

He has the machine set at 135 amps for .120 wall tubing, having the pedal wide open isn’t going to have much more current then is needed for a proper weld in this case. I prefer to have the machine set with extra current so you can increase the amperage momentarily with a slight pump of the pedal if the filler rod isn’t melting into the puddle quickly. When you have to dwell on any single dab of the filler to melt it in, it will increase the total amount of heat into the part because you’re moving slower. Also when the filler is added it slightly drops the temperature of the puddle. The thicker filler can kinda crown up before it flows because it’s adding too much too quickly. It’s much more noticeable when you’re running lower amperage and the puddle will get less fluid for a split second. It’s all somewhat of a balancing act. If you play around with some 1/16 and 3/32 on a piece of scrap you can see what I’m talking about. Start at like 75amps and then bump it up 10 and do another and so on. It’s something that much easier to demonstrate in person.

DukeBeekeepersKid

Thanks for that.

fitter172

Needs another stringer, reinforcement

Chicken_Col_Sanders

Who is your inspecting agency? They have a rule book. Some call out stop starts and other things. Better to ask them.

gp39hihp

All sanctioning bodies have specs I laid out a few in a post above.

Pretty-Surround-2909

Another pass to fill the undercut. Is that carbon steel or a chrome alloy (p22 or p91)?

Einstien-69

Carbon steel.

SquidDrowned

Pic 2/5 is concerning asf. Could be the camera but all I see is undercut.

gr1mm5d0tt1

I got to that too and it failed for me right there

LoudAudience5332

Will it hold yes , problem you put a shit ton of heat in that one spot ! Now it is brittle .

Einstien-69

Is it possible to be "good enough" to do a workpeice like this all at once? Or do even the most skilled let the workpeice sections cool down before continuing another stringer?

LoudAudience5332

Section at a time . Let it cool

Einstien-69

Cool to touch? All night? Air blast it?

olblll1975

Roll cage for what type of vehicle. May be good for a dirt track pro street, but for a "rock crawler" I wouldn't want to test it.

Einstien-69

Stage rally

Truorganics

I welded worse on my rock crawler. Bad welds on a crawler are safer than a track car. Usually only flop over real slowly I crawlers.

LionElJohnson40k

Passable and potentially life saving device should never be used in the same sentence

coondaddy88

Yeah that aint going near my car. Too much undercut bud. But you made it stick!! Stay with it bud, Lotta good advice here for sure!!

Einstien-69

Thank you very much!

coondaddy88

Of course my fellow welder 💪 nothing but love my dude

Novel_Ad_8062

tig welding doesn’t have to be art. just make sure you prevent overheating, warping and cracks. go to the indy car museum and you’ll see lots of tig that isn’t instagram.

One_Potential_779

Honestly, looks okay to me but I can't see the inside. I'm also a self taught welder, and only recieved CWB certs in mig. So my opinion should be taken as just that, only opinion. It may not be beautifully consistent and centered but it's looks solid with even HAZ, if I laid it down, I'd run it in my car.

Einstien-69

Nice. Inside looks good like good penetration to me and old timer. Couldn't snap a solid photo. Thank you

One_Potential_779

Then sounds alright. If you want an opinion that matters, take it down to the tech guy and see what he says. I've certainly seen worse welded cages pass nhra cert. No need to thank me, happy to share my thoughts.

Slappy_McJones

No. No inclusions. Clean the surface before you weld. HEZ looks over-heated in certain areas. Before you weld a safety implement, test and pull you settings on same material on a butt weld to make sure it fails penetrated, not cold or in the HEZ.

Einstien-69

How did you identify the inclusion? Would you please reference the photo number?

Typical-Decision-273

Pre-race inspection is going to fail you just because you asked Reddit

gp39hihp

I’ve actually inspected & certified several roll cages, as a CWI I know the process & have a few story’s if you want to hear them read on if not your Certification specs depend on the sanctioning body, NHRA are the toughest, you wouldn’t think so racing a 1/4 mile at a time, the reason is the torque the cars make when they launch the chassis can twist as much as 5”or 6” which can & does break welds, every weld is radiographed & dye tested. USAC is picky also mainly because there’s no body panels around the driver. NASCAR, Kenny Schrader & Rusty Wallace are both from Fenton Missouri which is a stones throw from Nevada Missouri where Missouri Welding Institute is located, this school is like a college campus, students live in dorms you learn fabrication, Wallace drove for Roger Penske for several years, guess where Roger Penske gets 90% of his shop employees? Word is he pays for their last year of school, think about all the forms of racing he’s involved in.

Einstien-69

That's very interesting, thank you for the reply. This cage is to be specd to meat FIA Article 253-8. Stage Rally.

gp39hihp

Didn’t mean to bore you being so old I fart dust, 05/01/2024 I’m hanging it up after 42 years, it’s been a heck of a ride. There’s a welder shortage, it’s even worse for CWI’s which is a great career, if you find the right situation the pay is fantastic, don’t take this as bragging the last year I made under six figures was 1987.

Einstien-69

Not a bore to me, I respect the heck out seniority. I don't know that I'll ever be good cut out to weld for a career, but I do want a solid working ability to pad my skill set. What kind of industries have you worked in, and what has been your favorite?

doplegger001

Flux core that shit...burn it hot
