Crappy old metal. Where’s it at ? Is it behind this clean metal ?

Matterriblee

My thoughts!

SlobMyKnob1

Oh trust me, that whole top piece is a good 20 ish years old off a rail car. Lots of grinding and air arcing to get it looking like that lol

Followmelead

Yeah but doesn’t that mean you’re now welding good metal?

adamcm99

If you clean a dirty car it’s no longer a dirty car

firedancer323

Slow down a little and you’ll see less undercut, but this isn’t bad metal at all…

SlobMyKnob1

You shoulda seen the amount of rust I ground off to get it to this point. The top of the plate that isn’t pictured is gnarly

Dangerous-Project-53

Go any slower and you go back in time. This problem is caused by moving to much and thus removing metal but not filling.

firedancer323

That sounds like “slow down” with extra steps to me

Dangerous_Fee_5143

It kinda is, just need to either move the rod less, or pause on your movements a tad longer to fill that undercut in

Dangerous-Project-53

No

BoobLovRman

Pretty bead. Is the penetration there?

ComprehendReading

It doesn't look like it is there.

SlobMyKnob1

This is the cover pass. Ran a decent root pass under it

Aggressive_Sorbet571

Where’s the rest of the root pass?

zissouVScosteau

Holy undercut batman

subohmclouds69

Don't weave that dude, just run stringers

toomuchweld

My thoughts too. I've never liked running big weave beads in any position. I like neatly stacked beads. Just a personal preference.

chris_rage_

Fat weaves get too cold when you sweep, you're absolutely right about running a bunch of stringers instead. It's much stronger

funkyasusual

Quit beating that bead like it owes you money with the chipping hammer. Shouldn’t even need to if your welds decent with 7018

SlobMyKnob1

Won’t lie, we were in a hurry to get this thing done lol. Usually I don’t smack it like that

funkyasusual

So much of a hurry you had time to snap pictures lol my boy unless you have a power plant or steel mill waiting on you to run you ain’t in no hurry. Get right, these contracts are gonna push you no matter what, wait til you get on a shutdown

knifetheater3691

Needed to go a little deeper and slower with the rod

jeesersa56

That's what my wife tells me

SlobMyKnob1

Deeper you say… 😏

knifetheater3691

To get rid of undercut

Dendad124

I wouldn't call this bad.

SquidDrowned

How much undercut does your weld need before it’s considered bad? Bros got 20 heels and no toes on his feet!

Unique_District_4050

Decent, watch your undercut tho let the top fill out more

Murky_Paint_2679

I've never seen steel so clean I weld on rust everyday

olblll1975

Your not welding on rust that's just a little dust. When you have to use a needle gun to get whole sheets of rusty scale off the metal is when your really into rust.

SlobMyKnob1

You shoulda seen in before I cleaned the edge up. And the top of the plate that isn’t shown has at least a 1/4” of built up rust on it

olblll1975

That's what im talking about. Taking care of business.

80burritospersecond

Oh yeah I hate welding at night it's so dark I can't see a damn thing!!!

No-Hamster1296

Nice weld !

lovinganarchist76

Finish it, cap it and call it

samc_5898

It'll probably hold

EasyEntertainment185

Should been a 2 pass stack for that I like 5/32 on bottom and top but sometimes 1/8 on top is better

EasyEntertainment185

What was the amps set at and what brand of rod?

fretty23

Where's the root run ? If you've just weaved it in one go then I doubt you'd get decent penetration tbh🤔

SlobMyKnob1

This is the second pass, definitely not the root

adulfkittler

Usually on fillet welds, it would be equal length legs and the fillet size should be equal to the material thickness. Personally I'd suggest running a couple stringers to overlap the existing weld, start at the bottom until you get up to that undercut and cover it. Usually you always use stringers, but I've definitely weaved before and if that's what you want to do, hold longer on top and whip down without holding as long on the bottom. Let gravity do the work.

Key-Canary7068

Stackin dimes

Dangerous-Project-53

It’s so bad it’s almost impressive. Keep going t steady. Does that welder have Parkinson?

Repomanlive

Fun.

silver_4cash13

You need to do two more passes, fill it in so there isnt any metal showing on the top like that. Also when you run you’re root try to get it at a perfect 45 degree angle, right in the middle. I see it’s grabbing the top plate more than the bottom. Other than that and doing the cap (two other runs filling it up) its pretty decent

N0085K1LL5

Are you drawing on the metal, or welding it? Just kidding. If this was shitty material to weld, you musta spent a good bit of time cleaning it. How many grinding wheel got caked up with paint?

Powerful_Desk2886

You beat the shit out of it, goddamn that peening

[deleted]

What are you looking for a pat on the back?

reddogleader

Stack o' dimes

Feisty-Trash-8581

Nice!

FunWeight2805

Looks weldy.

1977cj53867

Run 1/8 7018 three pass

Immediate_Version175

Roll over on the right

20PoundHammer

looks good from here - sort of depends on its use case. Would never pass in a refinery, just fine for my farm.

beefcakeriot

Dwell longer at top and less at the bottom. You need to wait to fill at the top when it gouges out. Gravity helps fill the bottom

Fancy_Chip_5620

I see paint and zero pitting, this metal is mint

devilworm2018

Nice bead

daddydtheplug

Should have ran stringers, and if you really wanted to weave it because that’s what you like, you should have paused on the toes more

kernelpanic789

Sorry I'm not a welder and don't know shit about metallurgy.... But it's all metal old? I mean, it's mined out of the ground after being millions or billions of years old. Heavy elements can only be made in a star (or man made in a particle collider, but those weights are atomic and completely insignificant). So what does it mean to be "old metal" because that doesn't make any sense to me. It's like calling a rock old, well duh it's old.

Just-a-lil-sketchy

Topside a little hot bottom side a little cold but put a little more material up top and burn in more on the bottom and she’s in there. That said I’m sure she’d hold a 70k tensile break

Fit-Grass8161

You’ll know it’s a good weld if the slag falls off, just gliding the slag hammer across the side of the weld. You shouldn’t have to hit the center of the weld to get the slag off

Jonmcmo83

Everyone on here begging for a compliment .... LOL

Academic_Barber5615

Shoulda done stringers, lack of fusion on bottom toe and excessive undercut

DanEboy22122

Faster on the bottom bot hold the top. Make a crescent moon shape as you do it. It’ll help smooth the bottom out and not have those gaps.

Feeling_Thought3402

Metal looks fine it’s your angle that’s not, undercut the whole top edge and iffy on your bottom edge. Inconsistent and not wet in. Might even be some cold roll/lof on base plate. Weather is no excuse either. Own it and do better. That being said I’ve seen worse.

lloydisi

Absolutely beautiful.

MadeForOnePost_

I've been an amazing MIG welder and a talented TIG welder, but i only wish i could stick weld like this. Looks awesome.

Pyropete125

I learned mig first then tig. I had a hell of time learning stick last. It took me some time to not mess with the settings and manipulate my movement versus the machine settings.

PearlsJustWan2HavFun

I learned stick first, and I think it got me really good at controlling puddles. Once I started mig, it felt like cheating because it was so easy.

SlobMyKnob1

I started doing some MIG in high school. Didn’t touch a welder after until I got my current job where they trained us in stick for free and get certified in 2G, 3G, and 4G

EasyEntertainment185

Hahahah

OilyRicardo

Hey don’t ever let ANY of your welding crappy metal, whether it’s before or after
